I am so bothered by all the people on here who start sentences with "dude". "Dude was kookin' it!" "Dude looked stoops in those highwaters!". I also hate the words 'kook' and 'stoops', while we're at it. Where in the world did stoops come from, anyway? Also hate when people say YEWWW and smash their trucks on coping after successful stunts. Have an original fucking thought!
In this thread: name things skaters say and do ; that happen 2 annoy u ; doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

I talk with an occasional "man" or "dude", some people I've met claim I talk a little like a hippy/stoner/surfer.. I dunno, for me its just from growing up on shit from the 60's and 70's and always hanging out with old timers. I don't belong in this time.

Starting a sentence like "Dude, I think you're wearing your shirt backwards" is fine with me. It's when a skater is like "dude hasn't put out a good video part in years" where it bothers me. You know what I mean? Like when it's talking about someone, and not to someone, where it becomes stupid skateboarder-only lingo.

Yeah I get that, putting on a "skating voice"!

i think "beast" reached full saturation last october. Overuse or misuse is annoying, but i'm unrepentant when it comes to the culture, i like that there's a vocab.

That wasn't too big here in Boston, as far as I can remember. Beast was big in my high school amongst jocks and stuff, haha. Graduated in 2006 so this was like over a decade back. Jocks are super on-trend!
-
I've been skating for 32 years so why fight it?
-
I try to focus on what people say not how they say it. #GANG

the constant insincere positivity in interviews gets kinda annoying. these people must talk shit sometimes but you’d never know it from their media personas.
-
HATE was too strong of a word, I'm sry SLAP. I am just upset by the skateboarding hive mind, people living inside shells of self-consciousness and not blooming like the bootyful independent butterflies they could be :-*
-
I don't think I've ever heard anybody say "stoops" in my life.

i thought shtoops was the dumbest damn word back in the 90s then sometime later i started using it ironically and now it's just part of my vernacular. it's still a shtoops word but i use it anyways.
i don't like shit that's too abbreviated. i despise the word 'steeze'. it's not even any shorter than 'style'.
i like bad slang such as 'lace up your gnarboots'.

i cant stand the overuse of the word "literally".

Remember Greco saying "SHOOT ME, motherfucker!" to that dude in Baker Has a Deathwish? I wanna relive that scenario saying "KOOK ME, motherfucker!" to skeptics reading this awful thread I made

I wish there would be another, smarter, more powerful version of Forrest Edwards that would intentionally go to famous spots and steal peoples' tricks or redo the most notorious trick from the spot. An evil genius of skateboarding.
Which reminds me of another annoyance, the idea that in 2018 skateboarders still give a fuck about already been done tricks at any spot.

I try to block it out.
Dude it was like literally so sick bro like, fucking, siiiick, you know what I mean dude? Like with the homies dude. So sick. Do you have any weed?
You could have left it at I hate skateboarders really.

"clutch"
-
Support our stoops.
-
not so much how, but the things we talk about, recently had a non skate third party join a pub conversation and was there for five minutes before he had to stop us and ask what we were talking about and "what the fuck is a rub brick?"
(It was how to prep a non slidey gap to ledge in an industrial estate)
-
i don't even know what "stoops" means.
but urbandictionary got me covered like
-
only american/english-speaking skaters talk like that :) but i think our skate lingo is cool. not sure if you were drunk when u made this thread
-
the worst is when someone who doesn't skate "totally dude"s you with the hang loose hand gesture because you skate.

Try living on the rez. The lingo is hilarious and I thoroughly enjoy it.

is it normal in the US for white dudes to casually use the word 'homie' or is that a skater thing?

“Oh, ______? He’s the homie!”
I HATE that one! They are NEVER the homie, they are always a well known skater who is a distant acquaintance at the very best lol
-
Oh Jeremy Klein? He's the homie!
-
Homie is by far the worst one! im super white, all my friends are super white and we live in the north east of fucking scotland.. noone is a Homie!
steeze, lit, fire, stoops.all those shits can get to fuck
the overuse of the word like always bugs me, but up this end its a national epidemic and there is fuck all anyone can do about it
-
"there's too many kids here" when everyone's balding or looks like zz topp

eh, don't push the steeze overseas.

I lived on band land with all native cousin everybody for years and cherish them and the experience. Close to my heart. (yah lots of laughs tho for sure)
-
Well that's just like, your opinion, man
-
Don't you hate pants
-
im not a fan of calling people "heads". its never sounded cool.
-
It's all a bastardization of the ever so eloquent surfer dialect. The nuances are noted and I tried to find the Upright Citizen's Brigade - Master Dialetician clip but youtube left me with nothing. On another note maybe you are just offended/annoyed by trivial shit like a person who has too much free time or a cushy life?
-
im not a fan of calling people "heads". its never sounded cool.
i feel like thats a big philly thing, calling older people "old heads" and calling kids "young bull"
-
i think 'heads' is mostly white rap fans who aren't allowed to say niggas.
-
How sweet life would be if that's all I had to worry about...
-
The way skateboarders talk is def all I have to worry about brah. It's a huge deal! Nah I barely even interact with skateboarders, I am just baffled how this particular subculture has such a large hive mind compared to others. I don't care too much about how they talk, it's just funny.
-
Hate when I land a trick and everyone's all dilly dilly
-
look at any instagram skate trick right now with a lot of comments (go to thrasher or indy or one of the big skateboarding instagrams)... How many of those comments have the word "heavy" in them?
TOO MANY.
-
I didn't grow up saying skate slang so I just don't say it. It felt unnatural to start talking a certain way after I started skating. A few phrases have slipped through though - "right there" being one of them. Not even really skate-specific. I like to say "duder" but that's because of Orgazmo.
I liked how some duders invented their own slang though, like Spanky saying "gangster status situation what I do" and things like that. It's creative.
-
"Player" was huge around here for a few years - it went from people pronouncing it "player" to "plare" to "plurr". A couple of dudes who are actually funny started calling everyone "player" and then everyone who is not funny started doing it and it became extremely annoying. Eventually I'd go to the park and hear a bunch of 12-year-olds wearing skullcaps and overalls calling each other "plurr".
-
I found "fool" the most irritating. I know it's sort of niche ("dude" is universal) but the Shake Junt lingo shit drives me insane. Oh fool get there while you can KYS fool woah fool is getting buck!
-
just meeting new skaters and seeing how low the bar of conversation is set is always so disappointing... maybe it's more of the younger ones, the ones in their 30s who are still at it tend to have grown up a little bit and can actually converse like normal humans. but yeah, especially when the high school/early 20s skaters are around each other, they amplify their "coolness"/"stonerness" by acting really high and laughing at the stupidest shit. the older I get, the more everyone's insecurities are just so obvious, almost tangible.
-
It fucking bugs me when skaters are all, like, "no" after I feed 'em Jagermeister and then ask to suck their dick. It's like, don't be such a fem with all that me too shit, bro.
-

Mabye (?) those guys are idiots? (baker 'crew')

I don't really mind how others talk, I do hate myself a little more every time I use the word totally for some reason though.

Worst thing in skating right now though is kids throwing horns all the time. It's the new shaka, both of which should be left in the past where they belong.

I made the mistake of using the word "kook" around a non-skater. Trying to explain what it meant was painful.

An understated shaka is quite a gentlemanly act in my opinion.
I use words like sick, rad, and gnar when around skate friends. Feels natural in the right context but pretty cringey in a non-skater setting.

I'm fluent in ebonics so this is mad disrespectful

I just read through this thread and I swear to god the only thing I ever said was, “dude.” I guess I never talked like a skateboarder.

i'm glad you brought this up. i do it at the skatepark all the time which really annoys me, it's fucking stupid but i do it. i started skateboarding in 6th grade and have obsessed over skateboarding culture since then, so i'm fucked. but i'm definitely been trying to make an effort to curb that as much as possible.

This started with people being grammar\spelling natzis on slap forum. Inevitalby that had to spread to dudes talking and the need to police/reduce that too. I heard a concept on the radio that any system built for optimization is a form of Artificial intelegence. (capitalism?) I think we're there (ai run amok) already with our platform economy. Any way what I think I'm saying is we should stay away from any group think such as "skate talk is stupic" -It's completely no more or less stupid than any other shit people say.

When u just meet and
"Do you know ___?"
People who use "steez" in a sentence deserve a punch in the mouth.
-
in no order but you've heard them used in countless Thrasher articles.
The improper use of certain vernacular makes me cringe..........
Dude unless expressing in a moment of surprise and worth that moment of truly being surprised
Steez is just baby talk why can't anyone handle the full use of style
Legend or Legendary unless it is used in a context that's appropriate
Yeeeewwwwwwwww is monkey squeeeling and annoying group hugs is a little homoerotic especially if it is a Baker maker Frankie Hill sketchy landing.
Lit WTF does that mean?
Fam are you regular can you not enunciate ily?
those are just a few and I will dribble out some more as soon as I think of more but those are some of my least favorite instant punching musings of skater lingo.

How skateboarders talk:
While smoking
Sitting on public infrastructure
On balconies at apartments of girls younger and keener than you
On couches of guys who sell weed
In parks at night

for some reason here the term "dezzy" somehow means drink as does the term "desmondo" (ie "anyone got a dezzy/desmondo") and then one offshoot of that somehow being "dezzy mouth" (dry mouth) - it's dumb as shit and everytime someone says it i cringe inside but thenagain these are the same people who say af irl
-
i'm all dudes and brahs but i grew up skating a ton and that's just how the homies talked... i also smoke way too much weed which probably doesn't help. i like to throw in a few lit fams now and then too... just to be annoying. the fuck is stoop all about tho? steezy has always kinda erked me... i feel like only kooks and non skaters use that word
-
I pretty much only cringe when I hear people say internet lingo “ lit af fam” type shit. Um That being said i grew up skating in southern ca and smoked way too much weed from 14-24. I talk how you think I talk, so dude if you don’t like it bone the fuck out you barn. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
