Yes the man pictured in the “have you seen him?” Animal chin posters is a very disappointing Asian stereotype. Not to mention his full name was Won-Ton Animal Chin. I mean look at the white bread mayonnaise and bologna sandwich George Powell and Stacy Peralta make and you shouldn’t be surprised they cooked up some racist stereotype like that. The icing on the cake of this whole weird story is this. The man pictured in the photo is a total creep, like tries to touch young boys creep. Someone I knew met him at some skate event, tried to take a picture with him and the old man squeezed his ass mid photo. Everything about the animal chin guy is fucked.

Final nail in the coffin; canceling a symbol of fun and adventure. Let’s blow up this dumb planet.
The YMCA’s youth adventure program also recently changed their name.
Know why?
Because, like that ridiculous caricature Animal Chin, it was no longer culturally sensitive, or appropriate. If your branding requires you offend some people in order to sell your products, you may want to reconsider your marketing approach.
Fuckin’ Indian Guides; always been on the wrong side of tasteful. Just like ol’ Won Ton.
Besides, thems what don’t evolve, usually die off. Let’s not be dinosaurs. Let’s DO leave Animal Chin where he belongs, as a fossilized relic of a time since past.
Nobody’s hurt by that.

And you’re a whole lot of asshole, but nobody’s wasting their time pointing THAT out.
I’m not offended by Animal Chin, because I’m a.) not of Asian lineage, and b.) I understand it’s cultural context, because I was around the 1st time it came out.
Neither of those two factors prevent me from being able to examine the phenom of Animal Chin with a moderately critical mind, nor from  determining that it’s totally reasonable in today’s cultural climate, ESPECIALLY IN TODAY’S CULTURAL CLIMATE, to find that shit offensive & completely sus.
Nobody’s being asked to bury the past. Just leave that shit there & learn from it going forward.

Animal Chin was one of the last vestiges of the sort of inaccessible vert skating that has more in common with dudes on $5,000 Santa Cruz bikes at the pump track than anything existing in skateboarding now.

An interesting entry in the museum, but we've moved on.

Oh, and the caricature is racist, too.

Final nail in the coffin; canceling a symbol of fun and adventure. Let’s blow up this dumb planet.

Imagine this: Your ancestors coming to America, building a fucking railroad, still get killed and persecuted for being Asian.  Then some skinny white boys years later use a stereotype of your race to sell a wooden toy.
Some white folks will never understand, but someday you'll die and all the things you think are fun and symbolize adventure will be outdated and eventually die out too.

The only people who watched that video are the guys who grew up during that era. My friends and I tried watching it one evening just because it's a part of skateboard history, and it was the absolute worst thing ever. We couldn't sit through that trash, easily one of the most insufferable skate videos ever put out, they're lucky that they had a captive audience w/o any other alternatives back then...

Skip to 1:39:00 on the second video.

I think the character is outdated, but the idea is not. Animal Chin was a symbol, just like Superman has his S, and Batman has his bat. The symbols of superheros are pop culture iconography. In the case of Superman, his symbol is to inspire hope. In the Case of Batman, his symbol is to inspire fear. Both working towards saving the world from evil, but with highly different purposes symbolically. Animal Chin as a symbol embodied skateboarding at heart. It defined purity, joy, and love more than any symbol our community has ever had.

On top of this Stacy and George are good men. Some of the noblest knights of the round table our universe has. Stacy and George helped more in the diversification of the sport than any singular entity. They built the original MCU. Just like you have black panther, you had Ray barbee and Steve Steadham. Black Panther did more to open up the doors in hollywood than any singular movie ever. On top of this they sponsored women skaters, Latin skaters, and even gay skaters they knew were gay I would assume. Those 2 dudes accepted everyone so long as they were professional, and brought something new and exciting to the table, regardless of what it was. Stacy even goes back to Marty Grimes, TA, and numerous diverse talents in the dogtown era.

I also think Powell except in this case here, chose to do racial things very very tastefully as opposed to others that have come after them. The graphics they did had a lot of cultural meaning to every single rider they brought on, and shaped the narrative for more outcasts to join our whacky sport.

I think the symbol itself is outdated, and should be replaced with a new symbol. The issue I find is that once Stacy left It was never the same. Great engineering groups always have 2 fundamental elements. A set of guys who are big big idea guys who think completely out of the box, and guys who are masters at optimization and execution. The idea is one is a ceiling raiser, while the other is a floor raiser. The one is there to create and conceptualize the most unique ideas, while the other grounds him in reality and flushes out the critical details. Most of the time you do not find both, and it’s the typical comedian/straight man combo. Stacy realized that to evolve and not be stagnant, George would have to let go of the reigns and let other innovators take over. This is an inevitability of any great vision. His ego got the best of him, like many great engineers. The fundamental principle of the military and great engineering is to break ego because it creates inherent bias, and does not allow for split second decision making and agility since you will always encounter a bigger opponent in combat eventually. George never realized you need new authors to keep characters going. For instance, if Frank Miller was never handed the reigns to Batman, you would all probably think Batman is the lamest of all the superheros, but because of his great work 60 years after its inception, he became the most badass superhero in all of comics because of the combination of legacy with innovation.

lol is this real or some advanced trolling
an old Chinese guy has nothing to do with skateboarding which is just one of the reasons its racist. Won Ton Animal Chin wasn't skateboardings Dark Knight. also everyone memory holed that video about a year after it came out because even back then it was cringe. it wasn't a symbol of anything

Cheetah, The Search For Animal Chin was goofy (at best) when it came out, and lead to the dissolution/disintegration of the Justice League, or whatever you want to call the Bones Brigade to make it fit into your metaphor.
By the time you were born, it was already relegated, as a comedic novelty, to the past.
Interesting take, but nah... Won Ton is still done.

For the record, I'm asian (not Japanese), born in Japan, and wear glasses, hence the avatar.
But sure, if a Japanese person told me that they're offended by it I'd understand.
It's pretty pathetic to get all sensitive over what *other* people find offensive.  Let's be honest, y'all are just threatened by any pushback against what you're used to.  Sorry minorities don't like being the butt of your jokes given the historical backdrop of crimes committed against us.  Sorry being white doesn't give you the same privileges you could have had in years past.  It's your own fault you were born so late.

Imagine this some japanese might be offended by that king of the hill reference avatar you got going. I say we hang you in the town square for thinking that's funny.
[close]

What’s to be offended about?  That’s Hank Hill’s Japanese half-brother who works in robotics.

Someone can see it as an offensive caricature of japanese folks. I don't , but you know.
[close]

For the record, I'm asian (not Japanese), born in Japan, and wear glasses, hence the avatar.
But sure, if a Japanese person told me that they're offended by it I'd understand.
It's pretty pathetic to get all sensitive over what *other* people find offensive.  Let's be honest, y'all are just threatened by any pushback against what you're used to.  Sorry minorities don't like being the butt of your jokes given the historical backdrop of crimes committed against us.  Sorry being white doesn't give you the same privileges you could have had in years past.  It's your own fault you were born so late.

I was just saying that it’s an actual Japanese character from the show, not someone just drawing Hank Hill to look Japanese, which I’d agree is reasonable to get offended about.  The existence of a Japanese character on a show isn’t offensive, particularly as he wasn’t a 2D caricature

I got you, I never found any of the asian caricatures that offensive anyways.  Just outdated and corny.
The only thing about Hank's half brother is David Carradine's "clearly white guy doing an asian accent" voice over.  Otherwise I love that character.  The stereotypes of Japanese people in that double episode was also for the most part more nuanced than straw hat, chopsticks, buck teeth.

Steve isn’t an authority on this deadly serious issue I’m afraid. Maybe one of you guys should ring up Robin DiAngelo to hold a weekly thread to cancel bad things

It’s kinda rad, actually. A well shot, well-edited half-interview half exploration into how someone skated the mundane, 10 blocks in their hometown and keeps it fresh.

As kids we knew this was a racist stereotype and it was corny dogshit.  We just looked past that & made a pause tape edit without all the skit bullshit.  Should dig that out.

It’s hard to watch anything from the 80s now because they’d shoehorn the same LOL ASIAN PEOPLE jokes into every movie. Animal Chin was corny anyway, when was the last time anyone watched it? The ramp at the end was cool but the rest is booooooring.

For real, and a lot of the shit in the 80's has aged..... Let's just say poorly.

I saw sixteen candles without the Nostalgia that people from that era have about that movie and all i could think was "What the fuck is going on with all the date rape in this movie?"

Try not to think about Indiana Jones and Marion’s backstory in Raiders of the Lost Ark.  “I was just a child!” “You knew what you were doing”
Rewatched Temple of Doom a few months back for the first time since i was a kid, when it was my favourite movie. Holy shit that has aged very badly.

if you are honestly upset about this you need to get a life in a giant way. i’m sure the AARP mag you get every month will have some ideas about how to occupy your time (shuffleboard, wearing full pads and doing shallow end slash grinds etc)

Or how about you people grow some balls and maybe get a sense of humor

Everyone harden up and accept that chinese people are funny, or be compared to a vagina, the ultimate symbol of weakness
I like when people call me a “pussy” cuz then I’m like hehe they are so strong and birth life.
I call my friends “ballsack(s)” instead of vagina. Balls are weak af, vaginas are way tougher.

i could care less if animal chin gets cancelled. but isn't animal chin basically giving the same kind of nod to kung fu theater of the 70s/80s that wu tang does? doesn't that whole stereo type come from asian cinema itself? i grew up in south east asia in the 70s and 80s and used to watch asian martial arts shows over there all the time growing up and to me animal chin was just the old wise "keeper of ancient secrets" character that was featured in almost ever show i saw as a kid. tarantino had a similar character in kill bill.

by saying this i'm not saying that these images don't or shouldn't offend people now but i do think that when a part of pop culture doesn't age well like this and becomes offensive in todays cultural climate that doesn't mean that the people who created it, our enjoyed it 20 years ago were racists or being insensitive. maybe folks should ask more questions and pass less judgement when calling out these things.

edit:
i wonder if my gif avatar is racially offensive today. i'm assuming not because it points to source material but it seems like at some point it could be because conceptually it's exploiting the same stereotypes. i've actually got a bruce lee wall hanger in the garage too. i'm probably also a victim of kung fu theater fandom over here...

That movie is terrible, I remember seeing it for the first time in the 90s and thinking it was gross. The Donger is just there to entertain dumb white people who think accents are super funny.
