He barely flips his board, hardly ollies onto anything, needs to hold someones hand to slappy a rail.
https://youtu.be/vfnJlPCkemc
-
Because people buy his boards, and also because he's sick.
-
Supreme wants. Supreme gets
-
fuck off
-
People besides you follow skateboarding and buy product. People besides you exist on planet Earth
-
He has really entertaining slams from manuals?
-
Who was the other homie with the two clips?
I have always enjoyed aiden's footage. But then people (me) wonder why sean pablo is pro.
-
The horticulture crowd is into him bombing dirt hills as a method of seed planting. And since it's the holiday season, he reminds some of Scut Farkus from A Christmas Story. Other than that, I got nothing.
-
Who was the other homie with the two clips?
Nik Stain
-
aidan mackey = soty?
-
Because he's fun to watch to skateboard.
-
bc he's fucking dope
-
because he kickflip backlipped the rail at SLS after midler had tried it
-
Because he and the Supreme/FA kids move merch.
-
He has really entertaining slams from manuals?
Worst slam I ever had was from a switch manual. Hell, I should be pro.
-
Fits into that category where he doesn't appear to be the most athletic of skaters, so all of the sketch looks dope as fuck.
Dude is dope.
-
a hype brand is not complete without a sprinkle of gimmick pros

Yeah, but it’s not like Strobeck is the team manager over at FA…
I guess Bill’s just got pull with the right people.
-
It's just his name, that's the only reason.
-
Because he and the Supreme/FA kids move merch.
We get these “why is XYZ pro?” threads all the time and it’s amazing to me that people don’t understand that this is the answer. People still seem to think you gotta skate in the minors or ascend some meritocratic ladder to reach pro status.
-
Still bummed he didn’t hill bomb El Toro after they ripped the stairs out.
-
Aiden is pro to make jagger Eaton cry at night for having to buy his supreme underwear
-
Aiden is pro to make jagger Eaton cry at night for having to buy his supreme underwear
This is a sufficient reason, plus, Aiden is sick, so fuck of.
-
It's a way to attract a bigger market, having a loveable nerd whose skating and image lots of young hip types can relate to but who's not necessarily the best skater in the world. They see themselves in him so they think he's cool and it makes them worship him and buy his boards.
-
Pop punk revival!

OP is a Tum Yeto mole

Hell, I should be pro.

Hence why it’s just as easy to turn around and ask “why isn’t/wasn’t ABC pro?” If they had chops, paid dues AND weren’t a shithead it 100% will have something to do with their marketability/value as a financial asset to the company.

I agree, OP. He’s sick... but not that sick

You realize Jason Dill or literally anyone else can create a skateboard company and make anyone pro right?
-
I'm smoking on that shit That made Seven strong

if you can go to those spots and do that shit then type away, i know you dudes are trying to switch crook a foot high box and can only stoke on hammers but it’s so funny to see people spazz on dudes who can pretty clearly skate not doing enough street league shit on a street in a major city

Speaking about becoming pro, I wonder if it’s just the diversity of skating.

Especially with the diversity

Don't ask me. I don't know the guy personally.

Skateboarding needs guys like Aiden! Theres far more that id personally like to see removed than him.

i don't mind his skating, i think he has an alright style and a somewhat decent trick selection albeit kinda played out

How and why is anyone pro? what is pro?
-
How and why is anyone pro? what is pro?
Pro is a state of mind, validated by someone else putting your name on a skateboard and selling it.
-

You mean you don't have to skate for 2-4 years at the collegiate level?!

dudes been in the game Eleven Years and he is 24.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVgediQRwe0
id be interested to know more about his story. he has lived all over the place! apparently is he is originally from Pasadena, from what i understand is a pretty rich neighbourhood of LA. maybe his parents were never around much and he just bummed around skateboarding and osmehow managed to do it long enough he got hooked up. or maybe his dad was a military dude or had some job that caused him to move around lots or something.
I wonder what the sequence of events was that led him to 917 and then FA. was he really young when he met some of these guys he still skates with?
seems like he would have been 13 when he put this sponsor me tape out at the very least, maybe evne younger (that is just when Sage posted this to his youtube) he was obviously really good from a young age. i feel like he uses both sides of his brain. he definintely knows what he is doing when he chooses these things to film on his parts. amazing song on his FA part too.
one thing i will say about dancing on thin ice is when you watch that video, you get the vibe that these guys would be doing this exact same shit whether they were sponsored or not. theres millions of kids out there who are talented skateboarders but how many of those parts are forgettable? that FA video I have watched so many times. it is just much more entertaining and hypes you up to skate more. it is the full package.
Lets break it down into hard details;
being a pro for the companies he rides for like Supreme, the relationship is strictly about selling clothes and promiting the brand. there is obviously something about his entire look and persona that is appealing to people on and off the skateboard.
being a pro for FA: the fan base is not concerned with ability level. Do you think most people who bought jason dill or bob puleo board in the past were caring much about hammers and NBD? fuck no. the guys who care about that are consumer of PLan B (the skateboards, and the birth control) and Monster .
so you are off the mark buddy barking up the wrong tree. use your brain. usually there is more to it than whats on the surface level and normally it willl make sense if you just think about it

he's not the best skateboarder thats for sure. kids want to look like scott farkus! what can ya do

To me he skates better than that dude was on Polar and went to Hokey...I cant remenber his name how mediocre he is.
-
I wondered the same thing and then went and watched all his footage that I could find. He’s a lot like Chris Milic in that he has raw ability and does the shit that he finds fun and interesting. I don’t care about the hill bomb stuff, but lots of his manual shit and ways of skating spots can be an interesting change even if it’s not the most hammer-y.

you're thinking of Kevin Rodrigues who is sick as fuck

you say he hardly ollies into anything. but at 45 seconds into that part he ollies onto a rail that's like 4 1/2 feet tall.
I can't do that, so im fine with him being pro tbh

Might be some complex mental gymnastics but I'm going to guess Ave and Dill turned him pro?
-
I like Aiden but his part in dancing on thin ice was like 90% gimmicky manuals.
-
because the skateboarding industry is marketing based, not talent based. A lot of everyone's favorite skaters aren''t very good at riding a skateboard, but portray (project) an image they relate to. hard pill to swallow, but if you don't like it change the channel.

Actually, Alex Olson turned him pro. Maybe more complex than you think *wink*

I love his 917 part and his Dancing on Thin Ice part where he skates to Amebix gets all the punks hyped. I rewatch both hard

aidan mackey goes to real street spots and does tricks that most people can't do. all you have to do is just watch the footage. it's not hard to figure out.

Can piss be covered in shit? Given the fact piss is a liquid, I don't think it be covered in a solid.
I think piss covered shit would be more fitting.

Not sure if it’s still a thing, but THIS dude built a shoe empire that lasted nearly two decades as the unchallenged leader in skate footwear, out of a little Sims cash & a stupid trick (shown here) called the flare. Or la fusee, en France.

Didn't know the guy before - but apart from what everyone else said:
* Goes fast with interesting tricks
* Has unique style - on board and persona
* I'd rather watch some of these clips again than the 100.000th big rail trick or big trick down some stairs which looks all the same nevertheless etc.
* Guy seems to have fun skating

Its the other way around - to manny people are really good in riding a skateboard and doing the wildest tricks with it.
Its not enough to be good at Skateboarding to become a face / personality for a skateboard hardgood brand.
to the OP
Dill and Ave decide to create a sister brand for FA which shoud be more "edgy" "punk" "hardcore" then FA without being
a copy of all other "punk" "hardcore" brands already in skateboarding - so you need to find people who gave that idea of a brand a look/ identity.
I am not a fan of Aiden - but big fan of AA.
At least we need to realize that Dill and Ave create two of the more successful new board brands of the last years.
Who thought that 20 years ago about Dill - if you see Kosten & Guy in comparison.(or manny other)
So they did more right then wrong. And Aiden´s Skateboarding is a part of that story of success.
For sure the Boards I see in the shop / wild are Tyshawn, Na-kel, Elijah and most of all the stamp embossed team boards.
This and all soft goods is the bread and butter of the brand. Aiden is more a side kick with one board per season - I have never seen his pro board so I assume that even that one board have a smaller production volume then each Tyshawn board.
Dont be worry that Aiden is a pro skateboarder - he is just living his life.
-
I feel like he was also this generations ride off a roof guy but moved on to bombing dirt hills when more people started getting roof clips

was thinking about it last night and dancing on thin ice has i think ZERO handrails. dont think it has a single flip trick down stairs. theres hardly any stair sets in general, and normally they are skated in a unique way if there is one like a wall ride shove or going down that skinny ass suitcase ramp. there is not a single flat ground flip trick in the entire video as far as i know either. oh just that massive hubba that he slams on in the very beginning ;D

Because he's marketable due to his association with Supreme. He's not the first and won't be the last of guys who go pro because they are in the right place at the right time and know the right people. I will say, FA has to be the least balanced team talent wise I've ever seen. They have 3 guys who are legit prodigies in Louie, KB and TJ, and then a couple of guys who are pro due to being homies with the right people.

A lot of us are old as shit, that’s probably why. That being said, when I was growing up in the 90’s someone like Aiden would have been written off as someone who skates the way they do because they can’t do “real” tricks. He might even be written off as a poser who’s totally clueless about what it takes to skate on a professional level. That’s not to say that there weren’t quirky skateboarders who weren’t as skillfully talented and didn’t fit the conventional mold back then, but they wouldn’t have the opportunities to be front and center with the best sponsors. You compare him to someone like Antonio Durao, who we can argue has been shafted in terms of having consistent sponsors for the talent he possesses and could do all of Aiden’s tricks as a goof while still being able to put out amazing conventional skating, and it almost seems unfair that the same opportunities haven’t fallen his way. Had we taken these two guys and sent them back 20 years, Aiden’s skating would be done as a dork part by Antonio the way Koston did in Chomp On This, and Aiden would be the weird kid at the spot who would probably be vibed out by your hometown hero’s with shop sponsors who get a free pair of Accel’s/ Reynolds 3’s once a month on rep flow.

skating is doing it's thing it does - becoming insanely popular and amassing tons of pros who very well could be washed up in a decade's time. it'll be unpopular again and the 'conventional' skating will rise once more. i hope egg shapes replace the popsicle when that happens.

Exactly. The industry is big enough and the interest wide enough that there are pros who can fit into narrow slots which didn't exist even a decade ago.
-
Hey man, Aidan being pro gave me that feeling of "huh, well maybe I wasn't super far off from achieving my 13yr old self's dreams after all"
...and I kinda like that feeling.
Plus Aidan is niche. Big, broad companies like Vans pay for niche. He might not have as big of an audience as CJ Collins or Curren Caples but I guarantee his audience are 10x more loyal and engaged with anything he's associated with.

Hey man, Aidan being pro gave me that feeling of "huh, well maybe I wasn't super far off from achieving my 13yr old self's dreams after all"
...and I kinda like that feeling.

When Aidan had the IG handle 'eatingmychips' or whatever it was, I would see so many variations of that by his fans. Same with Ben Kadow (dragon_fukker, bk4000 etc).

The classic Castillo/Crob theory

It's supreme's way of showing contempt for us peasants
Dude! Haha this actually made me chuckle out loud
-
imagine being pissed because someone isn’t doing something conventional enough for you
-
that candyland part sucks
its like richie jackson mixed with jub
hahahhahah what a combination
-
You could easily argue that every unheard of kid that popped up in "Cherry" never deserved to be pro and you might be right. But I do like Aidan's skating
-
I wasn't really a fan of him at first but he does some really cool creative unorthodox tricks with good style that aren't hammers but is just fun to watch.
-
I recently rewatched some 917 era Aiden clips, and then compared them to some angsty current Aiden clips. He used to be such a nice boy, until he got in with a rough crowd.

The environment Supreme creates through its obsession with 'style & culture' is one of if not THE most unstylish and cultureless environment on the face of this planet.

but they got street cred and ugly/hot models that skateboard so a) you can't hate on them and b) you WILL buy their shit at 600% markup

i hate this kid so much more now. i hope he gets hit by a truck

i toured with leftover crack, they were as fun as you would imagine
-
He is pro because he has ginger hair and looks and acts like an extra from Gummo which fits their aesthetic.

Stza overdid the cough syrup and hard liquor when I was supposed to play with him. Got picked up by an ambulance before showtime.
-
Because he's fun to watch to skateboard.
Said no one ever

I liked the part. good music. Def some whack tricks in there though. I appreciate the fact that skating allows a wide range of people with varying degrees of talent to be pro. Puts it more in the realm of an art than a sport. Some people are pro because they are undeniably good and some people are pro because people like watching them and they are surrounded by the right people i guess. Of course there's a bar of talent you need to be over to be taken seriously, but at the end of the day you're still doing tricks on a piece of wood, so whatever.
Theotis still has a board somehow

hating skaters that everyone else likes doesnt make you interesting or cool
-
C’mon, that wasn’t all THAT bad, was it?
Maybe I don’t give enough fucks, but I’d still rather watch the funny looking ginger than a sports.
But hey, tha’s jus’ me.
-
I’ve always kinda liked him. Don’t know why though.
-
imagine being pissed because someone isn’t doing something conventional enough for you
I think it's less about conventional more that it's very repetitive and often not hugely difficult.
-
i watched it with the sound off and enjoyed the skating - it's hard enough for me that's all i know

Yeah, Daewon has had periods of doing very unconventional tricks but they were generally extremely difficult too.
As for the threads question. He's pro because he got the right connections with Supreme and that whole scene and his skating is passable enough they can justify him being pro. I'll give him credit though, unlike some of the FA/Supreme kids he actually tries and puts out footage consistently.

ngl these FA skate vids make TJ look like a benchwarmer and aidan mackey look like a god. TJs insane on the board. aidan mackeys just good. FA get your priorities straight

after the show in birmingham alabama we were watching the warriors on the dressing room tv. there’s a part where they’re trapped in gramercy park and the one guy goes “we must be 50 miles from coney island!”
naturally, being an nyc dude stza starts remarking about how it’s nowhere near that far etc and i go “stz, they’re gang members, not cartographers” and it was the only time i saw him laugh the whole tour

Remember when Ave sent Rowan an FA box and he sent a letter back with a cutup FA sticker that said “sorry”. Bc he wasn’t leaving baker.
I wonder what kind of sticker he made for Reynolds when he let him know he’s now dipping for the inevitable.
Kader will quit via IG.
Q2 goin crazy industry shakedown for sure

He provides free marketing to the brand which leads to massive amounts of rich kids attempting to emulate his skating and their parents spending money on the boards and clothing. I wonder sometimes how hard the skateboard industry is laughing at everybody throwing money their way.
