From Daniel Wheatley,
Q: Busenitz, what kind of stone is your portable bench made out of, and how much did it cost? I'm tryin' to hook up a local ledge spot and am sick of the DIY ledges with angle iron.
A: The bench is made out of a plywood frame with 3/8 thick granite tile glued on it. The granite cost me 9 dollars per square foot. Don't get marble because it's too soft and it will stick when you try to grind it. I've used basalt before and it works good too and is cheaper than granite. Since this is all natural stone it's never exactly the same. Buy a sample tile and see how it grinds before you buy the rest of it. When you're done building the ledge get a stone file and round the edge to help break it in and keep it from chipping. Good luck. - Dennis Busenitz
