Lets get real here dude, Cigs may not have been the no.1 factor in him developing leukemia but they certainly played a large role in it, no question. It's been proven that smoking can double or even triple your risk of getting leukemia. I'm a fan of Dylan and wish him a heathy recovery & hopefully a long skate career after that but let this be a prime example that no matter how cool or talented you are, we're all human and what we do to our bodies will always catch up to us at one point or another.

you guys didn't read the other recent thread? a slap-sleuth figured out that if you click on his photo map icon on instagram (3rd icon above his pictures), you'll see the locations of his last posts. he's been posting inside City of Hope Hospital, which is a cancer research hospital in Duarte, California. (this can only be done with a phone though).
his lack of social media updates would make sense too.
i feel terrible for the guy. this would be such a heavy thing to face at the peak of his pro career.
slap may be a shithole at times, but i hope he can see how much support and positive energy we have for him.

that's still illegal. Think about it for half a second, if the answer was 'yes', why would anyone be a patient a cancer treatment facility if they didn't have cancer? Any info about any patient in a medical facility is strictly confidential, including their mere presence in said facility.

Not necessarily. Some people don't lost their hair and sometimes it depends on what the exact treatment course is.
Also, if you're in remission, you'll grow your hair back but still need to get frequent check-ups.

Really? Cancer is a billion dollar industry - they make money from people being sick and staying sick, not getting better. And the last thing this stupid fucking world needs is more vaccines.
There are natural ways to rid yourself of cancer and leukemia - hopefully he goes that route instead of killing his entire body with chemo.

Cancer is not something to take lightly and I think it's pretty clear Dylan has chosen not to expose this information himself, and tried to keep it under wraps. Is discussing this as sleazy as the crap that TMZ spews? To a degree, yes, but it is not like we are talking about what Greg Lutzka had for breakfast. We are talking about the future of a living legend.
Dylan has his right to privacy just like everyone else, but he is not like everyone else. He is an internationally known "celebrity," if you will. Everyone including Dylan himself knew this was inevitable; at least it was due to stupid social media BS instead of someone betraying his trust. That being said, I give major credit to everyone who knew and kept their mouths shut.
Anyone with even an iota of analytical skill just needs to look at the recent pics of Dylan; it's not that hard to deduce.

From the look of that photo he does look very ill. Difficult to tell because of the light, and the fact that his head is shaved, but it looks like there are patches of hair missing which is obviously a side-effect of chemo / radiation therapy.

Smoking is the dumbest habit that anyone could pick up...next to hard drugs of course. I regret ever starting. My thoughts go out to Dylan, his family, & friends. Leukaemia is a fucked up disease, but he's youthful and full of fight. I'm sure we'll see new footage, photos, etc. in the next year if his treatment goes well.

My healthy-as-a-horse athlete friend died of liver cancer at 27, not a heavy drinker and a nonsmoker, so if Dylan is sick to chalk it up to cigarettes or habits would be stupid.

I come from a family that carries cancer in its genes... My grandpa was 10 when he first had it, his brothers all died from it... My mom had it when she was pregnant with me... My uncles all had it... All different kinds of cancers...
Its horrible and please do not make fun of it.

Yes, Dylan has Leukemia. Everyone in the industry knows, but its too serious of a subject for anyone to confirm on any media site/magazine. The only way it will be confirmed is if Dylan does it himself, which is how it should be. In the end its his battle and if he doesn't want to publicly disclose what is going on then no one else should do it for him.
Dylan has been going through chemo (obviously) and it appears that the Leukemia is in recession. Looks like a full recovery could happen, but it's up in the air if his skating will ever be the same. Who knows though, people have had miraculous recoveries before and being that he is still in his 20s, there's a good chance he can be back to his old self.
It will take at least another couple of years for him to be back to the old Dylan, as he still needs a some more treatments and assuming he is 100 percent cancer free, he would then have to rebuild his muscle and get comfortable on a board again, which will be the easiest part for him I am assuming.
Stop being disrespectful shits and saying dumb shit about a guy who has serious illness. Sure its fun to get everyone pissed off on the board, I get it, but seriously, fuck off with that immature bullshit. Show a fellow skater some support.

The treatment took one and a half years in total and as far as energy/skating goes, I was off the board for two years. I remember having no stamina at all and trouble while walking up stairs. But after the therapy I was so stoked that I made it that I just did a lot of exercise and it built up back to normal in half a year. I was skating before and it definetely didnt take as long to get my tricks back as it did to learn them from scratch. But I was between 17 and 19 when it happened, so I also had the "bonus" of youth. While I was in treatment I tried to avoid skatevideos and magazines cause they made me sad.

Glad you made it out, you're definitely stronger than those who wish leg breakage towards other skateboarders. I know how difficult it was to feel comfortable on my board after an ankle surgery, and that was (realistically) only about two months off my board. It was weird though, because getting the timing right on certain tricks was the hardest part, as well as remembering to actually jump with my board... As weird as that is to say. But once a few tricks came back it was easier to get the ball rolling. If anything, I bet being on your board again was the best fucking feeling, and for it really made me realize how much I took it for granted. I spent three hours at the indoor park manualing on flat and power sliding around.

There's absolutely nothing I can add to this, but I want to give props to the guys who've gone through this, as well as the guys who have had family and friends go through this. I've always loved Dylan's skating, but that's pretty irrelevant to how much I want him to beat this. I wish Dylan the best and I think it's great that we're seeing some photos of him out and about with friends.

The image of him as a healthy and powerful skater in my mind juxtaposed with these recent images I saw in this thread almost makes me cry. I hope so much that he pulls through this.
Also, I've read many of the stories in this thread and it was kind of difficult, but I am really glad I did. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences; it takes a lot to talk about something that difficult and personal.

Yeah, it's awesome to see the dude out and about smiling with friends, though. If he is, in fact, doing better treatment-wise, I bet it will take years to get back to where he was on a board. Hopefully he can continue the modeling thing during that time. It would be such a shame for dude to lose what he's built over something he had no control over.
Also, I'm sure Huf will keep him on, and keep giving him Dylan shoes. The dudes name is probably worth more than his actual skating. Legend status has been reached, in my book.

Well chemo is not a permanent treatment, it's by sessions. So you can lose your hair for like 2 months then get it back little by little, then lose it again on the next session. That's what happened to my mother at least.

jim and dan, while not on any dylan sort of level can skate pretty damn good on opiates. he weaseled and dieseled a nollie heelflip fs noseslide last night.
ya can't go right after doing a shot but once your rush fades away you can get it in. i'm not 100 when i'm skating jammed but i can do most of what i do soberly. dylan is just operating at a higher thetan level than us to begin w/ so opiates don't set him back too much.

doubt it he seems so sure like he knows him on a "personal level" like on some "stan"/marshall mathers approach.
Not surprise why it hasn't been announced publicly. he wants to deal with it amongst close friends & family and not be so open that the whole industry needs to know and have some web hits to gain.
as far as i know and according to some sources i've talked to...he's had this condition for some years and have only taken higher levels of treatment now. hence the seasonal "shaved head" these past years.

What I can guess is the fact that he must be under a serious stage of his treatment chemo/artificial coma, something like that.
I know a lot of people that had to endure cancer treatments (including my mother), and some of the stages are really hard for your body. Hope he will survive.
Sadly, with all the poison they put in our food/furniture/houses, air and water, the number of cancers is gonna skyrocket in the next years, and it's probable than many of us will have to suffer from it.

I think pro skateboarding is a weird thing you watch these guys and girls hard work on video for years, you read their interviews and watch their day in the life videos and hear stories about them second hand in articles. It's hard not to feel a closeness to a stranger I think people wanting to know his condition generally care for the guy and are hopin for the best, expecting the worst and paying respects to the talent and the person as they know him.

Between his Mindfield, Gravis, Transworld Cinematographer, and Cherry video parts he was a massive influence.

My friend sent me a message about this. As I read it I felt dizzy, and fuckin' tears in my eyes right after. Never felt like this for a person that I dont know personally, still cant believe it. He was such a huge influence for me when I was a teen, back when Mindfield dropped.

Had a great sesh then went to go get a sandwich and was lurking instagram and saw basically everyone posting about it. Instantly got bummed, didn't really feel like moving and he wasn't even my "favorite pro". This shit just sucks whether you didn't like his skating or you loved it. He made a huge impact in the industry and even people who didn't skate knew him. Hes up there with Van and Lewis skating the perfect spots and his name will no doubt live forever in all our hearts

Very sad news, I was hoping I'd never see this thread again but here we are. His epicly later'd part always stood out as a personal favourite of mine. This was a difficult day. I can't believe it. To be honest, even up until a month ago, despite a lot of evidence, I refused to fully believe this, because it was horrible. I have been influenced by him for quite sometime, and I have faithfully purchased the majority of his products, really enjoyed his skating, and felt happy in knowing that skateboarding had Dylan Rieder.
I am upset in thinking how it will be difficult to know that he won't be producing footage, his family won't have him with them, nor his teammates. My collection of his stuff is dear to me, and I am happy to have it as relics. The product of his that I have skated, I have always enjoyed it, as I knew in some shape or form, I was ideally supporting Dylan directly. I plan on continuing to support Huf, knowing that he carried that brand in a huge direction, along with the fact that he made me willing to even give their stuff a shot.
I never met him, but from the thoughts of a fan, a skateboarder, and another human being, my thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and anyone who was close to him. You will be missed, heavily. I hope you are now a shooting star somewhere else, as the skateboard community was so fortunate to have you.

holy shit. that was beautiful. i can never stand footage without skate sounds but that was amazing.... the song sounds like there's a skateboard constantly rolling in the background? so much CONTROL in his skating, something so relaxed but yet with so much power, and size
this hit me really hard. i don't think i've ever felt this way about someone dying that i didn't know. as much as i respect bowie or michael jackson, i just could never FULLY relate to people being actually depressed about it, thought it was almost posturing. but i feel this one in my heart, he had SO much left to give and i too assumed he would be fine.

I've thought about this many times, you couldn't write a character as badass as Dylan even if you tried. Dylan always went all in on his skating. Dylan never sold out even though he easily could have. He always did his own thing no matter what people thought. He never once did some lame interview or photoshoot with or for someone he didn't fully believe in. He went on the tours, talked to the fans, skated hard at the demos. On top of that he had a rep of being a great person.
It's like he was the superhero of real skateboarding, and for that he will remembered forever. Rest in peace Dylan, we miss you already and you will forever be in our hearts.

I could not concentrate in class today whatsoever when the rumors started appearing. I kept refreshing slap and instagram hoping for a reliable source to confirm that he was indeed still alive. When I got home from class the worst had come true and I actually was crying which like many of the people here, is wild since I have never met him before. I think as far as my generation of skaters go, Dylan was one of the most influential by far in how we view style as more important than the difficulty of trick itself. Going on instagram and seeing all these posts from Cara Delevigne to Ozzy Osbourne to Nyjah and pretty much every other skater alive really puts his influence into perspective.

Agree with this, he was so effortlessly stylish on and off the board. He didn't seem real, it was like looking at the Tyler Durden of the skate world. My girlfriend doesn't know many skateboarders by name, but she definitely knows Dylan and she almost cried when I told her. His influence is immense.

Cut down in his prime, his influence will live forever. RIP. I feel for his friends and family, as well, as it seems like his last few hours on earth weren't pretty.

the whole thing is sad, but that photo is what really puts it over the top for me. i cant imagine what that situation must feel like. most people in my life that have passed either died suddenly or when i was too young to remember. that photo to me is a reminder of whats inevitably ahead. enjoy your life and your health while you can and tell your friends and family that you love them.

I was so ashamed and embarrassed that I rolled up my jeans and started to tuck in my tank tops this summer. Before going into the skateparks I'd quickly pull my tank top out. Hell even skating the all white Dylan shoes that I saved for a year made me feel embarrassed, but you know what, that is what cutting edge generational icons do. Their ways and styles is odd and even frowned upon by people at first, yet it plants roots in more conventional and acceptable ways. Now it would be harder to find a park where a good number of skaters don't roll up their jeans at all and what was looked down on is now more accepted as the new cool. Dylan is cool in every sense and like him I won't be ashamed to dress or skate in your own personal way.

I may have joked about his fashion and shoes, but no one could ever deny his ability and style on a board. I remember seeing him for the first time in a quicksilver video, and he stuck out to me. His Transworld part drools style and his comfort while skateboarding. I'm not one to normally get sad when a skateboarder I have never met passes away, but someone as iconic as Dylan hits a little harder for me. I think the hardest part about all of this was how young he was. Still blossoming into his full potential. I heard a quote someone said that perfectly sums up his amazing life:

This is crushingly sad. I'm glad I got to skate yesterday before hearing the news. A lot of people in my generation seemingly grew up with Dylan Rieder, being as he started gaining notoriety around the time I started skating. This feeling is somewhere between losing a hero and losing a classmate. I still remember exactly when, where, and with whom I watched his Gravis part for the first time, and I knew as soon as it finished that it was gonna change shit. Cut down in his prime, his influence will live forever. RIP. I feel for his friends and family, as well, as it seems like his last few hours on earth weren't pretty.

Its sort of like a lot of the 27 club with guys like Hendrix where there career never had a noticeable fall off.
But I'd add this. Dylan had the skill and talent to be a skater we would only complain about if we just didn't get enough footage, like Gino or Carroll, the style is timeless. I don't think we'd get mad about washed up parts. Very few have this skill, but Dylan did.

I was lucky enough to work with Dylan for five years at Analog.
I met him just after he went pro, got to see him get his first signature shoe with Gravis,
and transition from lanky rail killing teenager to fully grown powerhouse.
His style is what I always admired most, he was just steezy as fuck, doing catalog photo shoots with him was effortless. Any time I doubted one of my designs I'd have Dylan put it on and it immediately became 10 times cooler.
He was always super cool when saying, 'I'd never wear that.' I'd just immediately scramble to find something else for him,
black or white with no logos, and he'd smile at me like 'don't ever give me a pair of stone washed jeans again, dipshit!. Haha.
I always enjoyed our chain-smoke sessions outside the studio, chatting about our love for Elliot Smith or the latest Conor Oberst record or just random industry shit talk. As cool and grounded as he was I was always very aware that I was working with a one of a kind, and one of the best to ever stand on a skateboard. He was always the coolest guy in the room, even when Dill was around ;).
His Gravis part was such a huge deal for us as a company and for him as a pro, it changed the game forever.
Everybody was so proud of him and that project.
His passing is heartbreaking, unfair, and tragic but I think he lived a fuller life than most ever will.
I was by no means close to him but I know many who were and they don't just love and admire him, they consider him their brother.
He wasn't just loved, he was beloved. He was a beloved figure for so many near and far.

Yeah, as sad as death is, to be in comfort surrounded by your friends and family... I can't think of a better way to go, if it had to happen. He lived with grace and died with grace.
Mark Oblow stated he was the one who closed his eyelids for him when he passed. Not a doctor or nurse. Him and Oblow were a true friendship. I have a lot of respect for that guy.

Again, truly a terrible loss. Someone mentioned this earlier, but my grandmother was actually diagnosed with cancer the next day, similar to someone else who posted in this thread. It is sad, but as strange and cold as this sounds, I'm more accepting of this, as she's 86, battled cancer before, etc. With Dylan however, I have been sad since this unfolded. My buddy and I have been talking back and forth, just thinking how we kept telling ourselves this was not real, and there would be another part, more shoes, and he would be the shooting star he was born to be.
I talk to the Huf rep regularly, and I let them know how sorry I am for the loss for them as a team, and a family. I wasn't going to skate Dylan's shoes anymore, but I can't help it. Slip ons and Sutters. Period.

Thanks for sharing, I knew Dylan as well not close, but through mutual friends. This is an extremely hard grieving process, and pieces like this definitely help. Just a massive loss, an icon, a lover, a friend, a brother, and a son to Joe and Dana. I bet he is just meeting Bowie, Lou Reed, and Elliott now, playing riffs, having a laugh.

I dedicated an entire skate session to doing nothing but impossibles in honor of him and also dedicated to the people who I've personally lost to cancer. I didn't know him at all, but I felt like there was no way he wouldn't recover from his illness. I just wanted to see him out there being vibrant again. I still can't believe it.
The brightest light made dark with us left to adjust our eyes to this darkness. RIP.

I'll be honest, I didn't break down in tears or anything but I definitely had to sit back in my chair and digest the news for quite a while and having the thought that he has gone pop into my mind at random times over the last few days has really thrown me off.
There's definitely a gaping hole in the scene left in his wake and I don't think a single person can truly tell themselves that they didn't admire at least one aspect of his persona.
He was a complete package that so, so many tried to emulate and failed.
From a completely random kook in NZ, we're gunna miss you Dylan.
