not too sure who covered who.... but im pretty sure it was elton motello, then the damed, then plastic bertrand... but the sonic youth version is sick as fuck.... and im not too fond of vampire weekend, but their cover is great...

big star doing the velvet underground...kind of made covering the velvets a tiny little sub genre, or at least a tradition amongst cool bands--r.e.m., the feelies, up to the present with atlas sound and beck doing whole albums worth of velvets covers.  don't think anyone quite topped this one though, it's really distinct and haunting, awesome late night listening.
