New Movies in Theaters
« on: April 05, 2024, 06:40:51 PM »
The other thread is pretty broad, so I wanted to make a thread for all the new releases (and hopefully encourage people to go to theaters).   I think I’ll also try posting the notable releases coming out each month

4/5
Monkey Man
First Omen

4/12
Civil War

4/19
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (dir. Guy Ritchie)
Abigail
Sasquatch Sunset

4/26
Challengers
Boy Kills World
Humane (dir David Cronenberg’s daughter)

Saw Monkey Man (Dev Patel’s directorial debut), which has been touted as “John Wick in Mumbai”.   Thought it was great and fairly subdued stylistically so the John Wick thing didn’t really land with me, but I kinda liked how it was doing its own thing and not trying to call attention to itself with flashiness.    Also, loved the anti-Modi message

Agreed on Dune 2

I’m not a big horror guy so I’m waiting til it’s on Shudder in a few weeks.   I’ll give horro a try if the word of mouth is significant enough like Talk to Me.

Wow!! Dune 2 was out of this world. Could not recommend this enough. Even if you weren’t feeling part 1, part 2 is outstanding.

I’ve heard the opposite, most recently from my friend yestersay when we went to see it, but for me I had exactly the same feeling at the end of the second as I did for the first ”I wish I could continue watching the next one right now” :D

I can see that some aspects of the plot might not appeal to everyone but I guess that comes from the source material. To me the audio/visuals are exquisite and there’s something appealing/intriguing about how absolute (for lack of a better word?) the characters lives are. Like almost makes me want to get back into the military… :o

It's funny, because I have heard multiple people say that, while they know Dune 2 is objectively a better film, they still prefer the first one.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

It's like some preferring Fellowship of the Ring where others like Return of the King more. The world building and first introduction to everything can just hit the spot

Yup.  And this is Act 2 (seemingly) so it’s without a final resolution.    Dune 2 felt like it needed like 15-20 min more

Totally would've enjoyed another hour even haha.  But yeah the 3rd film is actually a new separate book Dune The Messiah so it's likely going to pick up pretty far down the future. I haven't read the book but supposedly there's a huge holy war but the book doesn't go into detail much it more so just acknowledges it happened and then carries forward from there. Hoping Denis gives us some sick in-space battle scenes at least to start the next one.

Glad to hear some praise on Civil War too, a friend really wants to see it so I'll probably join next week

Let me tell ya, I fucking loved Challengers.   Very much not “Devils Threeway: The Film”.   More Bull Durhamy than some seamy gen y sex movie like it’s being marketed

i may be braindead so im not entirely sure what you're referencing... but yes, more dudes getting nut-shotted by a couple sports balls would've definitely made it more entertaining

Excited to see it this weekend!

Release times might be slightly different because i’m in Australia but there is so much good stuff to see atm. Watched The Holdovers, Poor Things, All Us Strangers, Late Night with the Devil, Dune 2 and Anatomy of a Fall all back-to-back weekends.

Boy Kills World is violent and funny, but in retrospect, probably would have been fine seeing it at home later on

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - interesting enough, but like a lot of non-gangster Guy Ritchie, feels like it’s missing some oomph

Maybe Civil War was an expectations issue for some, but I saw it as Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse now type of film and it worked for me

anyone else see The Beast?  Stars Lea Seydoux and George MacKay, directed by Bertrand Bonello who I don't know at all.   One of the most interesting movie experiences I've had in a long while.  Just a bizarre mind melter with incredible suspense building moments and ultimately left me wondering what the fuck to really think about it.  Overall I loved the experience and if you like weird stuff almost teetering into Mulholand Drive kinda storytelling, I'd highly recommend it and definitely go in blind.  Reading any plot description will set the wrong idea so skip that.  Lea Seydoux is reason enough to go.

Haven’t seen it listed at my movie theater, but I’ll check it out when it does.  Are you based in the US?

Yeah it just happened to show up at a little independent theater by me. Hopefully it gets a wider release soon too
