New Year, New Trends.
A new building got built recently near my work. It's finished, but not moved into yet. So, like any self respecting skater, I went to check it out and see if they built us anything to play on. I got kicked out by this:

A robot security guard. The one I saw was a little more flared out on the bottom. So I can totally see someone wallieing off it.

I'd assume the robot you encountered has the capability to take photos of / record humans it interacts with, then upload those photos / footage to a web server. In other words, it's slowly building a database of "criminals". More data for the property owner to use against you. Tough to deny it's your first time visiting a spot when there is photo evidence of you being there previously.

In other words, it's slowly building a database of "criminals". More data for the property owner to use against you. Tough to deny it's your first time visiting a spot when there is photo evidence of you being there previously.
One of the wildest things to me is how normal and calm people are about facial recognition. Between snapchat filters, facebook automatically detecting peoples faces and tagging people, and even the new iphones with those emoji face things. I'm all for technology improving lives and making shit easier, but even some shit kinda phases me out with just HOW good it is.
So if these robots are actually compiling a database of faces and shit, might be time to break out the tinfoil hat and go live in the middle of the woods in a cabin.

Hi, I left on my own before the robot really had a chance to kick me out. I did not even have my board with me. I was just walking around looking for spots. All the ledges were already knobbed and there were just a few sets of stairs. I saw the robot off in the distance and thought it was a cleaning robot at first. It started rolling towards me and I saw a "Security" tag on its front. It kinda freaked me out and I just walked the other way back to my car and left.
Maybe tomorrow, I will bring a camera with me, go back and let it go thru the whole routine.

My homie's been on that, bought a bunch of 10 inch rectangular planks and started cutting his own shapes. Rode his board yesterday, shit was mad comfy and had some crispy pop.

It's just a big rolling camera. It's cheaper in the long term and less liability coverage for the property owners. A robot isn't going to flip out when a 14 year old won't stop skating and break their collar bone. There's still some loser on the other end of it, they aren't autonomous AI killbots yet.

There's this self check out little market thing in my office for snacks and drinks and shit, and you can either swipe your card like a normal person who is being tracked by banks or GIVE THEM YOUR FINGERPRINT to set up an account and deposit cash. People just do it. Give the cash register your fingerprint so you can have some oreos at 9am. Why does it need your goddamn fingerprint and why don't they think that's crazy? Total insanity.

Another week, another laundry load, you think to yourself as you climb down to the basement. You swing open the door, barely awake, wearing your last-resort shirt from a decade old fundraiser and basketball shorts. You groggily drop the basket down, opening the door to the washing machine, and on routine shove your week's clothes into the appliance. But when you reach for the laundry pods, the container's already opened.
Looking into it, you see not a single laundry pod, and no backup detergent anywhere in sight. Your momentary befuddlement is interrupted by a cute, demure "Excuse me?"
In shock, you turn around, and a creature unlike any you've seen before is inside the doorway. A translucent white is her unmistakably feminine body, but with odd transparent fringes along her "head" and behind her sparkling eyes. Her "snout", if you were to pick a word, has two small ridges, one blue and the other orange, glossy and glimmering. A similar pattern crosses her chest, one breast a deep blue and the other a bright tangerine. A floral scent fills the room, and you're getting the full effect of it with your jaw dropped at this creature's beauty.
You mumble something, the spark of recall dancing in your eyes along with the spark of arousal.
"You're missing some clothes..." She sidles up to you, giving you a glimpse of her round backside, again repeating the blue-and-orange motif. "I think what you're wearing could use a wash, too~"
Her half-closed eyes, and her bitten lip, give you all the hint you need. Your clothes join the rest of your laundry in the washing machine, and you embrace your newfound tropical-scented fling. As she hugs you, light squeaking noises, the sound of her taut plastic skin, fill the room, and the aroma becomes almost... alluring, no, intoxicating.

I back it. That type of style actually makes more sense in today's culture than during the mid 2000s.

We (Satori) recycled old skateboard wheels, but the process still involved adding new urethane on top of the old wheels. It wasn't a gimmick, it was: "How the fuck can we stop throwing all these old wheels away?".
We got boxes and boxes of old wheels donated, but after making the sets, it cost more than just getting some made from scratch. Most people in skateboarding the world are simply looking for the cheapest product. It's the story of capitalism, producer more for cheaper to have a higher profit.
Very few seem to care we are wrecking eco systems around the world with this model, but then again people don't care until it personally affects their lives.

Awesome. My promo budget has been limited to team riders only for quite some time now.
It's tough to pay attention to what every company is doing now a days in terms of sustainability in product design. There are board designs that use the scrap veneers from cutting decks to make a new deck. We had that option when Creation was around and I was told DLX does that with their price points.
I believe Element or some company did a tree planting thing at some point. Element's forest wood source is pretty heavy on sustainable practices, at least thats what Paul Schmitt talked about at the Element camp 10 years ago.

Sure, you've got some skaters who can drink brews all day and shred, but as people age I notice more of a focus on diet, stretching, alternative physical activities, and just slowing down on the party vibes (I guess that's called growing up).

I still drink brews throughout most my skate sesh's but definitley slowed down on partying all night vibes and try to make an effort to stay loose and stretch before and after physical activity cause i got so sick of being so sore for 1-2 days after skating all day.

But, as a matter of fact, I made it back to the robot guarded building about a month ago. Me and my friend skated it for a good 20 minutes and the robot was just hanging out on his charging pad. Eventually it woke up and went on his rounds. You could see wheel marks on the ground. So he just circles around on a set course. It didn't talk. And didn't seem to be paying us any attention. We skated for a bit more and took off. So, I'm backing robot security guards. I just got freaked out that first time seeing it.
