Been perusing through a lot of his Instagram compilations especially, as well as parts. It’s obviously an impossible thing to debate, but I feel as though he might be the ledge goat.
I can’t think of anyone who’s done a bigger variety of ledge tricks honestly. Often mirrored also just for the fuck of it. Seems like an endless supply and he can obviously do any trick he wants. There’s also such a vast variety and not much repetition which is what separates him from a lot of other ledge skating greats.
Not to mention the execution. Crazy fast precise flick with basically zero effort. Truly a once in a generation talent and a pleasure to watch.

Lucas Puig, Shane O'Neil, Paul Rodriguez, Marc Johnson, Mike mo, Dennis busenitz, mark suciu, cory kennedy

Shane might be the most technically proficient of all time. Skill and style combination though - AVE or Wenning for me

I can appreciate the fanboy-ism here. Out side of this, you deserve to be strapped to a chair and forced to watch videos starting with mouse up thru the most recent sour solution III. Your perspective must and will change.
In the paraphrased words of the great Pat Beverly, “delete the app, throw your phone away, retire from the sport, and evaluate your life.”
Edit. I would add that Wade would not crack the top 10 historically.

If style factors into the equation, then Wade D won skateboarding fifteen years ago already.
-
Tom Asta?
He’s up there for sure.
-
He'd probably get skunked numerous times in that Brazil ledge skate shit..
-
PJ.
-
Hes up there, im not mad at him being in the discussion
-
Super subjective, I'd rather watch wade d skate a ledge than Shane O'Neill, but I feel like Shane is technically better.

Fred Gall
Id like to throw Tim O Connor In there. He was one of my favorite ledge styles. Backside flip fakie 5 oh pop out.
So fire.
Pj wins I think but I’d like to mention David Milliken. I feel like if you luv ledges you should be told about D Milli.
Kalis. Henry.
Tiago obviously. Stevie. Ave. Umm… Chris Roberts…
I’ll try to think of more later
(These are all based more on style than bag o tricks)

I’ve been a skate nerd since we’ll before mouse came out so you’re barking up the wrong tree there.
Appreciate all the responses! Some good ones in there for sure. I’m still sticking with Wade though, mainly based on the massive variety of tricks over the past 20 years.

Agree. There is an argument to be made that he’s not even the best Canadian ledge skater. Bobby D got it if you ask me.
-
Javier Sarmiento
-
Wenning has the most swag on the ledges
-
Mariano needs to be mentioned.
-
Jesus Fernandez has done some pretty bonkers ledgework.
-
His titanic levels of OCD-grade white boy swagger should be enough of an accolade, let’s not get greedy
-
IMO MJ, Daewon, and Henry Sanchez should be in the mix
-
Enrique Lorenzo and Gustav
-
Paul Rodriguez can fuck up a ledge I must say.
Jesus Fernandez has done some pretty bonkers ledgework.
Yep. Don't think I've seen another fakie tre crooks on a ledge since Fully Flared.
-
Strikes McGee*
BDK will be pretty heavy when all said and done.
Most mentioned previous to my post should be in the convo including Mr. McGee

I used to watch Wade Desarmeoux's It's Official part on my iPod. Dude rules.
My first memory of Wade D was an SBC cover of a switch back smith on an outledge off a 6-8 stair set when he still spelt it all Frenchy with the eaux.
He’s dope, that’s all I got.
-
Love Wade as he's a local now and a great guy. But, the greatest ledge skater of all-time is Henry, and I'm not sure there is much of an argument against that (outside of how you can debate anything in skateboarding). Pack of Lies invented so many ledge tricks its beyond ridiculous to think about 30 years later.
edit: Of current skaters my favorites by far are Lucas and CK1. Shane and Carlos are unreal.
-
What is the name of the kid on plan d. FelipeGustavo?
I love seeing his footage. He rides the right trucks.
Carlos is definitely it.
His Tampa win was in sane. He was almost completely on beat with the track and everything. The best since pj for sure.
I gotta go to bed rn.

you probably don’t skate for that long..check Shane O Neill on youtube...he’s good!

That’s true...also suciu should be mentioned

You should leave your personal taste out of this. There is no way Kalis or Stevie were ever able to perform the mirror tricks like Wade. Same goes with BDK.
If I am right OP was talking solely about trick variety and not style or breaking boundaries.
-
Lucas Puig is definitely up there.
-
And if the ledge is chunky on rough bricks with 39mm wheels? Then who's the best of all time?
-
I'm old but MJ no contest

IMO it’s Carroll Henry MJ PRod Shane O PJ Ladd

Wanna start a flat bar thread?
I agree with the Henry mention, but I’m gonna say Kalis & Stevie for preference.
-
Tore Bevivino from the Sabotage crew is sick.
Sometimes I think about that time when Wade D did a sw pop shuv over a couch. Still can't believe it how easy he made that look. Anyone might know where I can see that clip again?
Joey O'Brien also had some crazy ledge tricks.

Enrique Lorenzo and Gustav
and Danny Montoya

Peter Smolick created flip in flip out game and greats 270 into ledges.

100%. Although I think Wade’s style adds to it.
But yeah I was referring to overall bag of tricks documented. MJ, Suciu, Javier, Shane and a few others are up there.
But guys like Stevie, Kalis, Wenning, AVE, Carroll..Love them all but none of those guys have deep bags really. Especially not Stevie or AVE. Way of the mark with those picks.
I’m talking guys who you could basically name any trick, and they’d likely be able to do it.

Im gonna be a wild card a say Max Palmer

I think you are sleeping on Ave with that comment. If he going to flip in, flip out like Shane, no. But, when you realize he can essentially 180 into any grind, from any stance, his bag is pretty damn deep.
-
Objectively speaking it’s Shane. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but there’s little doubt he has the deepest bag of ledge tricks.
-
Let’s not forget Flo Mirtain.

damn i did that 8 years ago

Of guys still actively putting out footage there isn't much of an argument against that. But, when you add the qualifier of all-time it brings a ton of different factors into it. Hence, why I lean Henry,
-
Current: Shane, all time: Henry…..
Favourite: insert your answer here:……

Pops
-
Rodrigo Tx sure comes to mind
-
I feel like there are different categories of ledge skating.
Obviously all ledge skating (should) involve some level of technical difficulty but even these may be split. For instance, Suciu and MJ (Boobby DeScheisser ot some extent) tend to do hard ledge tricks but with "basic" tricks (e.g., hardway in, alley oop, weird pop outs)
Then you have guys, where speed and the distance their sliding/ grinding is the more focal aspect: Busenitz, Nik Stain, AVE
Others go the "usual" flip in, flip out way: Shane, Wade, PJ Ladd, PRod, Mike Mo, also MJ
For me, Wade would be in top tier bracket of the flip in /flip out category, but less relevant for "surprising" tech or speed/distance
-
JB Gillet.
Marc Johnson.
-
PJ Ladd> But Wade D has more steez when he does his extremely precise ledge tricks, makes em look like nothing.
-
Lucas Puig is more enjoyable. Very technical and overall more surprising/creative tricks on a ledge.
Lucas is the only one able to make a sw hardflip bs tailslide in a line and make it look good.
-
waist high ledges and 10-second long slides, TIAGO!
honorable mention: Antonio Durao
Wade is just the great white hype.
-
Chris Cole
-
Style is subjective so no point in arguing that. Strictly going off of ability, technicality, and output, who can top Shane O'Neill? I can't think of anyone.
-
I’m not sure about ledge goat but he’s definitely up there with the manuals. He just holds them there exactly how he wants. Sometimes with the front wheels mm’s off the ground.
But Ronnie Creager in 20 shot or Trilogy (getting old can’t remember) is waaaaaayyy up there.
-
Oh, Gustavo is up there for sure. On both
-

With that logic, your answer makes sense…
Wade is a top style guy. Top top. One of my most favoritest styles. Definitely in my top ten of people I’d like to watch ride a skateboard. I hadn’t thought about him as being ‘the best’, in the way that people speak about say…Shane or whomever. Wade reminds me more of a Gino, which I mean in the highest praise sort of way*.
* Gino…it’s all been so cliche, for quite some time, but he’s still the best to me.

Kalis is almost the source code. That’s why he gets brought up all the time as the greatest.
I personally consider him to be the greatest street style. He’s like a guy or a hall or a Carroll even a cardiel. That’s style.
Wade definitely is like kalis inspired. Took it further. Can’t even touch the style of kalis.
Pj I’d say is of the Penny blood line in style.
Wade of kalis.
Like Paul and jereme are pushing around like Stevie.
Paul went full Mariano in slow motion tho for sure.
-
Ave kinda is ave style. He kinda make me think if Rick and kalis had a baby in west side story. Lol

All of you discounting Shane's style have obviously never seen him do a flatground nollie tre.

It is too broad of a category I think
I think Wade has had some of the best Balanced Nosegrinds, both stances, in the game, I would say second only to Wenning. There are probably kids out now who can do em bettter, but those guys innovated.
He also did one of the biggest switch pop shoves I have ever seen (over the couch)
There are certain things he was top tier in, you just gotta be a bit more specific.Very athletic combined with amazing timing.

Realistically if it isnt shane, it’s probably javier sarmiento or jb gillet.

For me it's Kalis, Pops or Wenning
-
Speaking of skateboarding, while being a fan for a long time, i recently felt like Wade's style is kinda forced / fake steezed. He never seems happy with almost perfect execution...false modesty, it bothers me.
Outside of skateboarding, he seemed into vaccine conspiracy, was all in with the Freedom convoy and recently shared a story where Gary Vee says "Parents should say fuck school". Not a good look
i would say PJ because of nostalgia... but he somewhat kooked himself too
Mark Suciu recently remade PJs tricks on that ledge with ease.
Shane, Lucas, Gustav though
-
Shane.
Love him or hate him, he's a very strong contender for the most technically gifted street skater of all time.
-
I think where Shane shines is Switch flips, bigspin, and back tail variations if we are talking about ledge skating. there is nothing in that spectrum he cant do. so he can do the awkward slides in the hardest stance, plus amazing timing.
PJ Ladd to me shines as an all-around ledge skater like Ronnie Creager. It seems like both those guys can just do any trick they want and they go really fast too. PJ fakie flip to crooks shove out, kickflip front tail 270. ronnie one of the first to do kickflip bs tail kickflip out (menikmati ender) their flat ground flip trick game really compliments their lines though and ronnie was more of a manny guy
Kalis for me was basically known for really good back tails both ways early on, also being able to flip in and take them to huge spots like hubba and in long lines at love park. switch bigspin back tail, and putting reg back tail on the map in mind field. he has a really nice bs nosegrind too.
wenning for me is the bs nosegrind pop out middle, both ways. he also had really nice sw bs 5-0, nollie nosegrind. bs 180 to 5-0 both ways. his switch 3 flip really complimented his ledge lines too. amazing bs tail too so mcuh control with the 360 shove out on his TWS part.

Suciu did all these tricks on a skate park ledge because they are all gnarly as fuck and was paying homage to PJ. (this is the obvious part)
The real shit is that PJ did all this stuff on a street ledge 15 years before with absolutely no reference.
Nobody was doing ANY of those tricks on ledges at the time. All very unorthodox tricks and not just your regular flip in flip out tricks. a lot of those tricks had never been seen before and it opened the door for dudes like shane oniell and suciu. Also PJ (WHL era) looks way cooler than all those dudes and skates way faster on crust. Not some perfect private parks or some marble dreamland like all the euros.
PJ is the answer
-
I dont think NBDs is what set PJ apart. the main one i can think of is probably switch flip front tail 270 and maybe the fakie flip front crooks variations. I am pretty sure both of those were ABD though... It was moreso the speed at which he did the tricks + how consistent he was in long lines imo. he was doing the tricks from questionable / pack of lies but WAY CLEANER and without pushing between the tricks.
-
wade is the cleanest, as in greatest economy of movement.

that is true. a lot of those questionable/ tim and eric tricks were on baby curbs but still went down none the less for sure but surely PJ was making shit up left and right on real ledges. 5-0 kickflip 5-0, switch heel front nose big spin. kickflip front tail 270. all the stuff that he did that suciu recreated was serioulsy next level for one person to do at once (most of which was all the same day) and it looked cold af outside and every trick was on the whole ledge. no dinky shit.

PJ is the answer
lol the plaza spot where he does most of the tricks that have been refered to doesnt look crusty at all. looks like a perfect spot
Still in the streets tho, not an angle iron ledge in the primitive park
im not sure exactly which spot you are referring to, I am pretty sure you mean the one where he does the switch flip tail 270. that spot actually looks a bit hard to skate because its a bit tight, and it would be a bit scary because if you fell wrong you could get pretty hurt tumbling down those stairs. the spot with the eggs your board could go into the water and seems like you have to carve in a bit weird on that spot too but other than that it is pretty ideal too. they arent 100% free but they are pretty fucking sick. i thikn there is a reason you dont see too many other peeps hitting them like he does too.

The navy yard?

Honestly i'd say that school where he does the super long noseblunt was a better spot. that place looked fucking perfect! is that in MA?
-
shane oniell has put out 20 more parts than PJ and PJLWHL still so much better to watch. also the only skate park footage PJ had in that part was on a vert ramp. 95% of that part was on spots you have never seen before or have rarely seen since.
Shane skates only perfect sunny spots. its just not the same. Suciu has ass style and just does all the tricks (on the very tip of every ledge)
Someone who hasnt been mentioned is Daewon. Or even Ishod. Daewon does bananas ledge tricks going mach
-
some crossover - they definintely all have good styles, but i'd say
Style Category:
PJ
Kalis
Wenning
Stevie
Dr Z
Tiago

Gino
Pops

I’m pretty sure I mentioned Ishod with Asta. Definitely thinking about those skills.

If we are talking NBD's and a list that extensive, you can't not include Cory Kennedy. His two breakthrough parts were absolutely loaded with them. Also don't get how Koston isn't in the NBD category either.

PJ Ladd is better
this was also my immediate first thought
Agree. There is an argument to be made that he’s not even the best Canadian ledge skater. Bobby D got it if you ask me.
I'd rather watch Travis Stenger. Micky Papa is worth noting to. That's just Canada alone. 🇨🇦

Travis Stenger really had it all - NBDs AND amazing style. Atheltic as fuck.
Russ Milligan too
I feel like that type of skating was not as popular back then as it is now. That was sort of the tail end of that handrail send era. Those guys were doing stuff Tiago Llemos does like 10 years ahead of its time.

Are you saying you would rather watch Micky Papa than Wade D? Or just Travis Stenger?
Side note, my lady and I always make stupid voices and say micky papa's name when we hear it announced during contests.
-
We going time machine with this comparison or dominance within their era? Overall?
-
micky obviously a great skater but he just doesnt have that same vision with his spot and trick selection, not even touching on the personality side of it.

This statement is wrong. Pj and Eli didn’t develop in a bubble. Those two being the best of what we had to offer.
Today there’s kids in Boston reaching that level.

I mean clearly wade over mickey popa lol, but its not like wade has a very inspired trick or spot selection either.
honestly ever since he started doing that dumb little leg bow thing after almost every trick I've been pretty over his skating.
But like everyone else said wades great but very far from best ledge skater ever.

I was gonna say this about Wade D and Tom Asta. Theres nothing really extra special happening other than buttery ledge tricks with dope style. Same with shane. its always just some perfect sunny spot and just some fucking amazing trick in some super colorful outfit. its all very contrived.
Its weird to me that its this hard to justify PJ in this conversation...

that's in Miami actually. there's a surprising amount of footage from the South in WHL, they seemed to be traveling a decent bit for a shop team. or maybe it was all one trip idk but there's a lot of Atlanta, Miami, etc. in there

Just wanna use this thread to shoutout Brian Panebianco. Can watch that dude skate ledges all day

That was all in response to Bobby. Micky isn't my favorite skater by any means but I think his ledge tech skills deserve some props.

wade d, carlos ribeiro, tom asta

p-rod deserves a mention before a lot of these guys. one of the first skaters really holding on to tricks proper across a whole ledge. everyone else was just tapping the end a la suciu

I agree on this one.
This isn't an amazing part, but it does show off his ledge skills. Skating starts at 1:00.

P Rodriguez without a doubt need props as well. His nothing but the truth part really showed his growth. Also forecast he's doing switch flip into grinds on the top of bleachers in lines. Switch flip in flip out shit was a lot more rare before he came through and it's still rare now. Plus it was always straight butter.

nah you’re right. I was kinda tripping.
You’d have to combine like 3 or 4 kids to equal a pj probably.
Then there the style and speed factor I didn’t think about.
I still have faith tho.
No one will ever have lines like Pj tho

Wade D, Primitive vid: last part or last part?

What a great tv show. I’ve heard some creepy things about the hosts tho.
I can’t remember his name but there’s a Brazilian legend who used to be on this channel from time to time.
He’s about my age maybe a little younger. Tall Long curly hair. I looked him up on here and they was skating hills with the host. Kid took on the hill and ate shit still they ran the slam.
If you know the name of the legend you should post it. Slap pals should be aware of a style king.

I feel like some of the Stalin square locals should factor heavily into this conversation, starting with Petr Horvat and moving on from there
Also need to mention Javier S - lines starting with flip bs nose blunt fakie then switch bs nose blunt about 20 years ago
