stupid lyrics like the song "worldpeace" ...plus harley flanny seems like a turd when i saw him a few years ago live.
"All you hippies better start to face reality
All your far fetched dreams of anarchy
Better start to see things the way they are
'cause the way things
Are going they won't be goin' far
World peace can't be done
It just can't exist
World peace can't be done
Anarchy's a mess
Things are getting hectic
It's all gonna end
You don't know what's waitin' up around the bend
Open your eyes, perhaps you'll realize
If aids don't get you then the warheads will
All you hippies better start to face reality
All your far fetched dreams of anarchy
Better start to see things the way they are
'cause the way things
Are going they won't be goin' far"

lol they are terrible live, he just hires henchmen of craigslist and give them 5 minutes to rehearse

what about that stupid song "revolution" by the beatles? sums up the baby boomer ethos perfectly. we'll adopt a radical look and certain parts of subcultures but we're not gonna get crazy and make any kind of meaningful change, because that would mean giving up our comfortable yuppie lifestyle.

You have to understand the context of that band if you are gonna take shots at their lyrics. Harley was in cbgb's at 12 years old and spent most of his youth squatting and fighting to survive in 80's LES. Him and John Joseph both seems like idiots now but harley did so much for nyhc and the evolution of harcore as a whole, music and culture.
Besides, having one or two problematic song is pretty much the standard for 80's nyhc bands.

But do you still like Shpongle?

cro mags are lolable but i cannot personally deny the fact that age of quarrel is one of the best hardcore albums ever
never noticed these lyrics, pretty funny because John Joseph is a huge hippy now hah.
I wish I could find it but a few years back my friend sent me a pic of john joseph leaving a mcdonalds. was on par with danzig at the grocery store

Never really liked them either always thought they were a halfassed skinhead pro America garbage nationalism type band, I also don’t like agnostic front.
-
I can't deny alot of their lyrics aren't the best but Before The Quarrel is some good shit.

They're not the smartest bands but their hearts are in the right place. I like punk in large part because it is much more grounded than the 60s lifestyle. As mentioned earlier, so much of punk comes from LES NYC in the 70s and 80s when you had the art rock of Blondie and Sonic Youth right next to the broke tough guys of Cro-Mags and AF. Take the lofty creativity of the former and the tough guy grounding of the latter and you get the truly revolutionary independent business tactics of Minor Threat and Black Flag.

You guys ever listen to the Born Against/Sick of it All debate? Lyrically and musically I skew much more toward Born Against (still love SOIA) but a lot of the talking points that Born Against brings up are just plain silly. You gotta balance out some of that idealism with grounded habits if you want to have a formidable movement.

i feel like born against forewent any grounding of their idealism in favor of sometimes absurdist humor. like their stance is relentless but they are relatable because they also have fun from time to time and don't take themselves too seriously. probably less so in born against but more so in their side projects like m.r.p. or young pioneers. i don't know. just ranting tbh haha.
i haven't even seen the vid, haven't heard of that debate before. who called them on that skit where the dude goes "yo born against, if you ever talk shit about us again bla bla bla" or something along those lines. i think i read somewhere that was beef with madball? imagine born against heckling and starting dissbattles with all these nyhc goons. pretty funny actually.

Doesn't seem that stupid, just some regular hippie hating with a sense of impending doom. The only silly part is the one about AIDS, I lol'ed at that.
