USA Stereotypes?
« on: November 04, 2011, 08:31:27 AM »
So i was talking to this german chick & we got on the subject of american stereotypes. she told me in germany that they think we're all either really fat or good at basketball. So i was just wondering for all the slap heads who live outside of the states, what's the general opinion or common stereotypes of American people?

lol, if you eat fast food in america then you're definitely at mcdonalds alot
alot of dumb niggas over here so i can agree with that
we use gps & mapquest for everything
not totally true but we do have alot of rednecks like that
and yea our government sure as hell makes us look that way, but alot of people act like this too

i think our corrupt ass gov't makes us look like total dicks. albeit alot of us are like that anyway, but most of the people in america dont like our government at all, yet they mostly dictate what the country does on an international scale

and hot dogs are amazing.

This is interesting to me because, American movies and TV show nothing but skinny, good looking rich people that all drive Toyota hybrids. But when all the bull shit is gone all humans are the same, stupid, selfish, and hateful. It doesn't matter where u live there is always a handful of good and a ton of shit.

Tv-dinners or fast food all year around. Except thanksgiven day!

Open minded towards visiters.

Dont Care about the rest of the world. Consider Europe 1 country.

Dont Care about European skateboarders because of their strange names, even though they skates amazing, they are 'just some euro dude'.

Looooves 4th july.

I dont think much of this is true, but that is the general stereotypes around here.

American stereotypes are never more true than in most of the south/midwest of America. Chock full of obese, gun loving Christ-nazis. Although, honestly, America's too god damn big to not have a shitload of awful people. Plus I love America and our culture of excess.

Yeah Im from England like the fink so pretty much what he said. The stereotype is mainly based around ignorance and arrogance, especially thinking you are the greatest nation and everywhere else is a third world country (cue 'AMURICAAH'). Also a lot of people make fun of your accents, which are generally split into the 'hollywood', the 'redneck' or the 'obama'.

What do you Americans think of when it comes to UK stereotypes? Is it bad teeth?

this is the gist of it.

Also the way politics work in america is really really strange to me. news networks with a political agenda for example.
how did that come to be? it amazes me glen beck had ( still has? ) his own show even though he's clearly insane. same with the oreilly factor, do people actually take that shit seriously?

Unfortunately yes. My boss loves to listen to Rush Limbaugh's radio show. Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly...I don't know how people take them seriously. The whole thing is for profit entertainment shows, but they have these rednecks (or, in cases like my boss, totally normal guys) completely fooled into their weird ideology. The best part is that if you try to trash the shows and their scripted "callers," the fans get all defensive and start spouting off shit about "the media" and muslims and "the war on christmas." They've done such a good job of convincing these people that these fake propaganda shows are real that now they think that objective news media is fake propaganda. It's ridiculous.

Some foreign exchange students had the pleasure of attending school in a rural midwest town. I had two German exchange students in my history class, one got sent back because she partied too much and failed all her classes lol and the other stayed. I forgot how we got on to the subject but just about the entire class called her a Nazi because she was German. That pissed me the fuck off but I was too god damn shy (didn't know anyone) to say anything. She stood up for herself but they class ignored what she tried to say. I wish I could have talk to her after class and apologized for the stupidity. One of the biggest regrets in high school.

Oh, another stereotype is Americans knowledge on geography. My dad got orders from Italy to Oklahoma. It was my first day and I was standing next to the bike rack, two girls came up to me and asked where I was from. Told them Italy and their responce was "Is that in Paris?"

theres a ton of people who also call out that type of bullshit but theres also alot who'll swear by it. dont get me wrong i wouldnt want to live anywhere else cuz america is the shit, but alot of the freedoms & privileges we have now make it very easy for our corrupt gov't and mega-corporations to "dumb down" the masses. americans at their best are cool, open-minded individuals while at their worst theyre completely ignorant assholes who think the world revolves around them and their country.

as far as our "accents" we have so many i couldnt even list em all. and the only stereotype i can think of euro's are the bad teeth thing lol. alot of the europeans i see on web n shit seem pretty cool. again, people are gonna be people, good & bad no matter where you are.

They take football seriously. Our high school had a shit team yet the school poured so much money and effort to keep it running. They seriously places football a higher priority than education.

This. plus everyone here in italy thinks that high school in usa is a joke, so easy and classes are bullshit, like photography and stuff. Tons of people went to school exchange there and basically did nothing and passed, one girl that came here told us she was used to study like 10 hours per month haha that's ridicolous
We also hate the government, but that was worse when there was Bush..
Most of us dream of the "so great" Orange County and LA area and so did I, till I actually went there and found out it was nothing amazing (this not saying I didn't like my journey or what)
Although is not running in some states of america we can't accept death penalty.

This being said, whatever, if you ask someone here 8 out of 10 would love to spend some time in america

EDIT: this is so clich? type of thing but I couldn't keep myself from posting it :D
