Butter is top tier,  I've heard of mayonnaise on a cooking channel for grilled cheese and I tried mayo once it's not too bad it gives a nice crispiness the egg whites from mayo also has a neutral taste when frying.,

Butter.

If you're not using american cheese on your GC you should be thrown in jail.

I think Brits call them cheese toasties.  Jolly good.

Whats the Euro equivalent to american cheese?

Cheddar ?
[close]

I think a mild cheddar would work.  But if you go too sharp/aged, cheddar gets more crumbly, oily, and runny.

Yeah not gonna use cheese board quality cheddar. The mild stuff works great, I shred it and use it for nachos all the time as well.

Back to business:
Down for butter or mayo. To be honest, it’snot that much of a difference. Olive oil as a fat in the pan is a tasty alternative - not sure if this still counts as a grilled cheese.
American cheese or Kraft cheese slices are nice, but don’t have enough taste for me. Medium cheddar or medium Gouda is a better choice imo
[close]

Olive oil only for a savory bread preferably with pine nuts and seeds on the crust, white bread has as a higher sugar content that clashes with the earthiness of the olive oil IMO.

Still a little bit away from lunch but I'm hankering for a grill cheese right now.

Edit: Olive oil works pretty good, doesn't get as nice of a fry on the bread like butter but the higher smoke point makes it easier to manage while giving the cheese more time to melt. Flavor wise butter wins hands down.

depends on what qualifies as a white bread, where you live. If this is in the toast sandwich bread region, i absolutely agree. If the white bread is more towards ciabatta, i'd disagree. but i must admit that we would have left grilled cheese territory entirely then

Yeah, the key part is real "grilled cheese," not real cheese. The Netherlands has great cheese. A lot of which makes for great grilled cheeses and great toasties. But they're not a real grilled cheese the way that that plastic stuff is.

The store bought white bread we get is sliced, sugary and loaded with preservatives, only the legit stuff for grilled cheese sandoozles.

This thread would make the grilled cheese purist on Reddit lose their shit, but Slap isn't a slave to tradition or rules!

I made one the other day with sharp cheddar and apple butter on multigrain with butter and it was like a dessert grilled cheese. Worth trying IMO.

I’ve done the mayo on a grilled cheese and it works well, tastes really good, and is harder to burn, but I just prefer butter more. Ideally enough that it leaves some grease on your fingers after you eat it.
