Title: Skating alone appreciation thread
Post by: TheDraught on May 15, 2007, 04:04:20 PM
Skating a manual pad at eleven at night in a deserted parking lot. Thinking about everything or nothing. Drinking a beer while skating back home, listening to my Ipod and slowly feeling the alcohol take effect while doing ollies over manhole covers.

Fuck, I love skating alone every once in a while.

i skate alone 4/5's of the time. every monday, wednesday, and thursday i skate flat alone and every tuesday i get dropped off at a park ten miles away. lately i have been skating with a few different people so i haven't skated alone in two weeks but one of my friends rolled his ankle last night so i think i am going to be skating solo again until the weekends

skting alone is awesome if it's a chill spot within skating distance, I don't do it as much as I used to though

I skate alone most of the time too.

I like skating with whomever, but a crew of people is a pain to deal with. Especially since I have since I have some sweet, homemade spots around my town.

awesome thread. It's good (and impressive) to see so many people either skate by themselves, or are down for it.

I skate alone 90% of the time. At first not through choice, just being new to town etc etc, but then you kinda get a feel for it. It's rad to skate with a crew when everyone is cool and feeling the same kinda spots... it's good to have other people to get you stoked... but there is something truely awesome and simple about heading out on a solo mission. Either curb or tranny skating or just spot hunting...

It's a good time... just sometimes harder to push yourself... or sometimes easier too I guess...

Skating for yourself. Solo Car park sessions. Learning a new flatground trick. Bombing a hill alone. These are precious things indeed.

skating alone is the best sometimes. but the worst is going down to your local skatepark for a solo session and it's packed with little kids.

Am I the only dude here who doesn't have any good friends who are really into skating?  There's several dudes at the park who I talk to or match up and go get food with.  But it's probably because I moved out here alone and only know a few groups of people.

Although most of my friends do have boards that they occasionally push around on.

As for skating alone, I skated alone for my first 3 years of skating.  Except for maybe 5-10% of it.  And when I moved here I put in many intense flatbed/mini flat-bar/flatground sessions.

I skate alone most of the time. Most of my buddies are into other things to the point where they can't or don't make time for it. I don't mind it, though nothing beats good friends, beer and a nice new yellow curb. I got to make some phone calls tomorrow...

here is how my "crew" is broken down

theres me.. im addicted to skating. anytime/all the time

the friend i usually skate with.. goes to the spot.. skates for 5-10 mins... sits and watches me for the rest of the session.. a total ruiner

my friend thats completely down with skating all the time/anytime moved.. but every chance we go skate wherever

1 moved across the country to a new scene and quit

1 got into biking for a bit and quit

1 just quit

the end

so im pretty much skating all the time... a session with some friends is a very rare and wonderfull occurance for me

kids i skate with

this kid who likes metalcore music more and normally sits around and smokes and will occasionally skateboard. shame too, he's good

this kid who is that kid ^ 's brother, same interests, gets into skating every few months a lot and quits again

this little kid who is down to skateboard almost all the time but isn't that fun and is annoying

this other kid who is annoying but is fun to skate with for the most part

and a giant group of kids who are always down to skate that live in the town 30 miles away, i normally go up there on the weekends and have some fun

most of the time i end up skating around by myself around town, it's sometimes a lot more fun than with people

Personally I see people who refuse to skate alone as having a lack of dedication.
I realize it's more fun and all that but if you can't get out to skate a spot by yourself that means you arent getting out much, sometimes if at all since schedules get tougher and tougher to line up as you get older.
These are also the same people that get to the spot and skate for 15 minutes, get bored and start breaking shit or fucking with whoever is skating. Or they just talk about how wasted/stoned they are getting later.

i skate probably 50/50 with and without friends, with friends is funner to just skate and string things together, when im by myself i concentrate more on trying to progress or improve smaller aspects.

also just came back from a  solo session, and i dont know why ive never done it before, put my speakers on my car and blasted music, made it a good time.

true that...

what's funny to me, it's that this year that i have been skating alone the most (it's good for filming manuals too), there is so many new spots popping up and i'll be the firs one to skate them (if not the only one)...

but seriously... it gets annoying having to wait for 30 min for others to show up...

although, a crew of 3 or 4 is the best!

Skating alone can be good, if it's a real chill spot like someone pointed out. Like going out on those cold days that no one else is really skating, you have the usually crowded parks all for yourself. But I think it's gets old pretty quick. Like 45 min and you're done.

But nothing beats skating with your friends. I'm lucky to have a real good crew of older dudes like myself, all skating pretty much on the same level, so we like the same spots. Everybody's super into skating so we go out like 4-5 times a week. The only thing I miss about being 10 years younger are the legs. Now I need to stretch and shit if I want to skate the next day. And I fucking hate that shit. Other than that, there's nothing wrong with getting old. We drive nice cars, we have money for gas and to travel etc. So thirties but so good.

Skating all alone is fun, but going to a spot or park and dealing with 5 other people sucks.
I have to skate alone most of the time, because I study in a rather small city and I'm the only student who skates. There are a couple of wigger kids who skate,, but that's about it I guess. pretty sad.

Good thing is, I got into bombing hills, which is a very enjoyable thing to do alone, unless you don't eat shit.

i find skating alone really boring, i feel like i'm in a gym training for something... usually if my friends aren't skating, i rather go and do whatever they are doing than skating alone. if i'm really desperate to skate i will go on my own to the local park, but its a small park where we all know each other so you always end up skating with somebody.

used to skate with gub all the time when he lived here.........along with JunglePop, but then Junglepop had to go and break his ankle

now, Im skating alone almost exclusively, unless I go to an actual 'spot' around town and other kids are skating there

it's not the worst, but it's also not the best

I skate alone about 60% of the time. Mostly during the week i skate by myself at the local skatepark next to my house (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfw96Rm2pEs) When i started all the friends i had were well into skating for maybe 2 - 3 years then they all started to stop and go onto other things like biking, drinking, getting stoned lol and then i lost contact with them. Now its just me and 4 others who skate. 2 of them skate maybe once a month and the other two skate every weekend for a little while then complain and we go back to my mates house for couple of hours and play loads of fifa which gets real boring. i guess im pretty addicted to skating!

I love skating by myself because I hate having to organize and meet up with people.  I also skate for bordem's sake a lot of the time and when I am visiting family out of town I love slipping out to go skate by myself. I think I am just a fly solo kind of guy though, when I was into going to bars and clubs it was the same thing. I didn't like going out in a group because I want to leave when I am ready and go where I want, kind of thing. I skate EZ7 mostly and there are always people up there who I know in one way or another but most of the time I zone out to music on my IPod and when I don't feel like skating anymore I split.

I also think that if you don't enjoy skating alone, it gets tricky to be a lifer unless you have a really cool wife and a crew of lifer friends near by.

Right now for example, I'm traveling on a business trip with my wife in Atlanta. She's busy all day and if I didn't like skating by myself then I would have missed out on skating this spot...

Almost everyday. My homies are all grown out of it. They'll get away from their routine and skate with me but it's rare. When I'm not by myself, it's at a park. Skateboarding is about more than parks (IMO). You'll see youngbuck, one day the homies start getting GFs and cars, etc, etc. If you don't skate solo, you don't skate. I skate.

Friends are good. But sometimes there aren't options, and you need to learn how to skate alone. It's good. Although I'm sure I've had more amazing sessions with friends than without, there's just still something "pure" about sessioning something alone.

It's also a good way to meet other people... if you skate in a crew sometimes it's off-putitng for other crews/people and you end up sticking with what you know... skating alone and bumping into someone else skating alone... and thus forming a session between the two of you is awesome. No bullshit, just skating because you want to skate and getting stoked that someone else is too...

Fuck. I don't know. If you asked me this a year and a half ago, I'd have probably been all pro-skating with a crew. I guess it just depends on your situation. I just like skating.

Yeah there's this stretch of downtown tacoma where it's downhill slightly and you can park and justcruise, hitting random ledges, wallies, wallrides, banks, curbs, gaps etc. the street s mostly repaved so its super smooth and it's always dead. my friends are all burnt on it but i go by myself and have the best time.

This is making me feel really spoiled.  All my friends are absolutely down for skating 24/7 and motivated.  All are between the ages of 17 - 23 and past the young stage where you'd fall out of it.
Thats how it was for me when I was 17, but five years later its the oppisite. Most friends got careers, girlfriends, babies, and other shit to keep them skating as much as they'd like. Enjoy it, it gets depressing looking through your phone book a couple of times looking for someone to skate with.

that's the thing for me, as I got older I just cared more about going skate than I did about bro'n down. also seems like the older I get the harder it is to find older guys who think the same way about skating as me. I get kind of frustrated when I skate with people who always do the same tricks and never try anything new and I hate hearing all the back in the day stories, the out of touch analysis of current skating and the "well when you reach my age you can't really skate like that anymore" from guys who I can tell are younger than me.

One of the biggest reasons I post here is my lack of contact with other skaters. Looking through the phone book IS depressing so I skate by myself and communicate with skaters here. I usually don't even bother trying to call people. I just go. F.I.A.

Yeah I'm the same. I always wondered about- and then later wanted to be- that one guy that showed up on his own and just did no-complies on everything and wallies off everything. I now aim to be that guy someday.

This thread is honestly getting me so stoked on skating. It's good to see so many people talking about just cruising around and loving skating. Bro'ing down comes second.

Wallie: that street sounds awesome... they're the best kind of sessions. I could never get burnt out on that kind of skating...

Yeah once you hit mid twenties - thirties, its hard to have a crew. Everyone I know who skates either A) is a sponsored am, so they dont have real jobs so they spend their whole day skating, while Im in work, boo! or B) A few older dudes who arent really down for street skating anymore. Basically because they cant hack it at my spots and they rather enjoy the pre-fab Hoboken park for some reason.

Skating alone is probably the greatest thing ever. I just grab up the pup, hop in the car and do some A+ spot searching most nights. And just fucking skate. Its nice to not have to deal with people being late, not wanting to go somewhere, etc, etc..

Stuck at work... itching to skate!

Funny thing is... Summer means dudes and friends of dudes are most likely visiting NY, so won't be so many solo missions. Then again it's too ht to skate in the day and night solo missions are the best. Goodtimes.

I just had a sick solo sesh and figured I would share my adventure with the thread

got the ankle situation worked out

found this first spot pretty quickly and ironically "what you know about that" came on my ipod right as I was rolling up and getting pretty stoked on my find

found these two spots next that where right across the street from each other. these were fun as fuck, probably skated them for 2 hours or so

got the five 0 but security came out while I was working on taking it to fakie

I wish this was in my town, super fun and suprisingly had no grind marks when I found it. Love the combo of bank to flat gap and bank to ledge. There were also some tree base flat spots on the way up the side walk for lines.

This spot was pretty insane but an obvious bust. There were ledges, back to back small sets, wallie setups, all kinds of shit

I was working on getting a wallie line here when I got the simultanious asshole cop and rain

Oh well back to the internet faggot chillin...

the wallie line spot was really fun and there was a down hill right next too it. There are no hills in Houston and I just learned bs power slides on this trip and was thinking it would be tight to get a line that finished with the hill bomb. oh well, I knew it was too good to last...

and this is nothing, driving around I saw all kinds of spot. ATL is fucking sick.

Atlanta looks amazing.

You from Houston? I visit there a few times a year. Seems to be some sick shit to skate, only ever get a mini-solo sesh when I'm there though... hour or so max so far.

Oh and I'm wearing the exact same socks as that first picture right now.

This thread is a win-win.

Nice spot hunt/documentation!

yeah, I'm from Houston. It's got some good spots but they are all 40 mins apart so it's kind of annoying and I don't know too many good non-hammer spots, nothing as fun as the shit I skated today anyway. I mostly fuck around at Ez-7 and skate the mini's and shit up there and hit southside up everyonce in a while. I skate street more when we are out of town.

Next time you come through Houston, hit me up if you want to get a session or want to know about some spot.

Sick man. I'll defiitely do that. My wife is from there, so we're back a lot to see her/the fam. Probably there in August, but the heat will most likely kill me, still maybe an after dark session... I'll hit you up next time I'm headed that way.

It's Pouring with rain here now. That shit better dry up tonight, as I have a day off ahead of me and an itch to skate... Solo, or otherwise.

Who am I kidding? I'll be cruising around alone five-o slapping curbs all afternoon. Can't fucking wait.

I know what you mean... Downtown Houston has nothing going on, so it's like a ghost town. Which is good for skating. But even just walking around at night is a really weird vibe.... you'd expect so much more to be going on, but really all the shit is happening elsewhere. I saw my first ever drive by crack deal in the suburbs of Houston (not that there are any suburbs... it's all suburbs really). Then I saw my first ever Armadillo 5mins later. A good night.

bump.

Solo session beneath the FDR yesterday, nice ground, nice breeze, the horrible east river and plenty of Jersey Barrier wallrides...

You guys should have been there. Although then it wouldn't have been a solo session and my social weirdness would have kicked in and I'd have left without saying a word...

I love skating downtown at night, just cruising hitting spots real quick and bouncing to the next spot before security can come out.

I have many spots I can only skate alone. That's another cool thing about it.

You can hit spots you don't get to skate when you arrive with a crew of six skaters, two filmers, a photographer and some generators.

On the other hand, you'll never get it on film as well.
