Title: Black Metal
Post by: HATE! on March 09, 2011, 09:17:19 PM
I am not a huge fan, but I know what I like.  This is easily the best black metal album I will hear this year.  Fucking killer shit featuring past and present members of Louisiana's THOU

I like Darkthrone. A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon and Panzerfaust are sick cd's. Haven't heard any of their new stuff but their old stuff is great.

lesser known fact: Jef Whitehead (of Leviathan) used to be a pro skateboarder and is actually the guy in the photo on that old skate or die 2 nintendo NES game. both an insanely talented artist/musician who plays all the instruments as well as produces all of his albums. apparently he drew the Thunder trucks logo which he sold to them back in 1991 for $50. he's done some stuff for other companies over the years, too (see below). he talks about all of this around 4:50 in the video below. he is still making art and still working doing tattoos as far as i can tell.

That one man metal video series was cool but really pigeonholed those guys. Xasthur to me is my jam. Jef during the parts where he’s at home you can tell he’s high as kite on H. I admire the resilience of these guys’ but noisey and Vice tell a one sided narrative that doesn’t give much for error almost 10 years later.

for me I write a lot of bullshit and journaling mainly about pulp fiction to creepypastas and black metal helps out a lot. For example I am working on a piece/story about how me and my partner almost being abducted by some sketchy Native American in Blackfeet/Crow agency of SD MT area and I find this music  Wedard a good representation of how me and my partner felt during that time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFUh-jBKtq4

A certain theme I have noticed especially when I go deep in my rabbithole of emotions and reflect, I see false hope clouded with I hate saying this victimhood as I do have a no means no fuck off attitude, as I get older I tolerate less and less bullshit as I'd rather be alone and content with my small circle instead of letting outside influences get under my skin. To hell with letting outsiders in my circle, I'll be civil but that's as far I trust anyone.

https://youtu.be/UaEaEIfKo70
Another great tune to just cruise on a bike or board to. Ideals of maintaining and holding onto friendships that have long since gotten stale and futile are why I find myself in a contradiction of wanting to be sociable/have a yearning to find a new friend, but soon thereafter it's either myself who assumes this or there's a vibe that I am not good enough. Doesn't matter if I have the skills or can show how it's done I'll never be good enough to be taken seriously. So instead of fighting I just leave and write more bullshit.

Here's something I really really like not black metal but damn if they aren't channeling the Autopsy and Repulsion as of recently.

There's something I don't like Bout this dickheads reviews of bands as he might know quite abit of history but a skewed perspective as to his interpretations of the music, Darkthrone has definitely put out some less then savory albums but what he trashes Fenriz later crustier albums were gold to me as they were great albums.

I watched the Lords of Chaos movie this week. I read the book, watched the documentary, and felt like I needed to see the movie even though I didn't really want to. I surprisingly enjoyed it. It was definitely a little on the light hearted side and kind of goofy...considering that the subject matter wasn't all that "light." But at the end I still found myself liking it. I read somewhere that Varg and Fenriz basically told the people who made it to fuck off when asked if they wanted to be a part of it / have their music in the movie as well, haha.

Ummm despite me liking Burzum I abhor Varg and his politics, he has a D&D game out also he believes the master race or Norse people were aliens that inhabited the Scandinavian continents, or something absurdly untrue. I wanted to watch it as well but I cannot stand anything VICE does not for their bs pandering just it’s skewed and exploitive, I punked out someone who was working with Vice for their jacket, he asked me what’s the deal with taxing someone, I said give me your Carhartt jacket and I said are you going to fight me for it?! No? Yeah that’s taxing someone.

I really only listened to the "trinity." Blaze, Funeral Moon, and Transylvanian Hunger were great. I think I've dabbled in Sardonic Wrath a bit, but I still default to those 3 for some reason.

What's a good place to start as far as their crustier / punk stuff goes?

I really dig Sardonic Wrath, especially it's production.  You should check out Panzerfaust as well as far as the early stuff goes.  but for the later:

I'm going to peep this stuff this week. Thanks for the heads up.

There is a really cool album by this Dutch band called "An Autumn For Crippled Children." Not exactly the same kind of stuff as this older 2nd wave black metal. But just well done, melodic kind of prettier sounding stuff. I think it's easily comparable to Deafheaven. But it's not bad and worth checking out.

There are some really great tracks on this album. The second song "The Woods Are On Fire" is really great.

Was huge on velvet cacoon, their back story is so random. Their drummer apparently committed suicide, so they used a drum machine on this record

dude YES! lost was a grreat album. i've never met another skater who liked AAFCC. feel like few metal peeps even know about em. lost, try not to destroy, and long goodbye were the only albums of theirs i listened to heavily but i think they put a new album out recently.

i'm loving this velvet cacoon song rules. i'm going to have to dive deeper into this stuff and their back story.

my bestfriend actually has a really cool band you might be into if you're into weirder "extreme music." it's called John Frum. My friend sings for them (he was the vocalist of The Faceless back before everyone slowly started quitting). John Frum is some pretty crazy, dissonant, and noisy shit. the bassist of dillinger escape plan is also in the band wih him. their full length is damn good.

WIth alot of Black Metal bands that there's a seamless characteristic fast heavy frantic shrieks but definitely raw and I admire that about it's earlier inceptions. Now to shoegaze and other questionable emo rappy douchey metal DH PTV DWP, I hate as they combine all the wrong elements and should be burned in the trash.

As of recently I have only found a handful of labels and bands that really encapsulate that 90's raw energy and frantic screams that remind me of early Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Celtic Frost, Immortal.

Which leads me to my recommendation of Rhinocevs Label anything they do is amazing,

I feel like Darkthrone is Rodrigo TX of metal music. Everything they put out is legit as fuck, yet not many people talk about them. And they let the music do the talking,no bullshiting around.

So fucking good, I really like in bm how the lyrical content is not so needed as it is an atmospheric ethereal that gives it it's rawness.

See I don't understand everyone's gripe with certain bands that somehow offend with NSBM themes I don't subscribe to those ideals in any facet. Yeah their views are fucked an no one gives a shit what Varg has to say as he is a batshit nutjob who thinks that Norsemen were fucking aliens?!

I just hate the idea that when having a discussion about back metal somehow someway when a particular band gets brought up, it's oh that guys a racist or some dumb shit! So what?! bands or their ideals shouldn't be reflected as your own, THINK FOR YOURSELF AND MAKE YOUR OWN OPINIONS  WITHOUT SOMEONE TELLING YOU HOW TO THINK!!!!!!!

I like this thread. I’m also drawn to the “war metal” style of black metal. The Ross Bay Cult & affiliates are keen to my ears.

Blasphemy: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EAZnHJ9-0EA

Revenge: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KYzzRR6Wa-g

Black Witchery: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BTsURVfMC_8

Death Worship: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uuB-465qO3U

As corny as this bands status and public legal battles have been, this song is an absolute all time favourite of mine.

Totally improvised black metal by a one man band (in the sense of "plays guitar and drums at the same time", not as in "tracks every instrument himself").

Darkthrone's shit is still good.  It's way different due to Fenriz's long line of influences.  It's got a lot more crust and punk shit going on.

love the crusty Darkthrone shit, also love the newer trad influenced Darkthrone shit as well. I love when Fenriz (or Nocturno?) does his King Diamond impression in "Leave No Cross Unturned"

He did a few releases as M. Del Rio and Special Breed (with collaborators) when both RB and Bone Awl were still both on hiatus, also Grand Mood with the CW Productions guys. The Bone Awl guys were also in a jokey grind band called Belabor who did a split with Sloth.

I love raw black metal but I don't follow a lot of stuff these days. Bone Awl and anything related is always special to me.

Oh shit yes, thank you my friend! Just read a review on Encyclopaedia metallum, sounds fucking cool! I love a BM album that harkens to the ugliness of early Sodom, much more fascinated that it's Greek (deviating from the more typical early 90s Greek BM sounds). I am a proud Greek bitch and I love my heritage of bands, so this is a mighty contribution my friend! I tend to lose interest when the mid 90s turns Greek BM into a more or less Iron Maiden with a tad bit of gloom & Goth with excited swim coach vocals .... LOL. But this seems to be proper raw, gonna spin it this evening!

I probably posted in here already but I listened to Venom, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate and Bathory when I was around 11 or 12 (so 1987, 1988) and I'm a big fan of Darkthrone, Mayhem, Immortal, Carpathian Forest / Nattefrost, Marduk, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, all of Fenriz' non-DT stuff (Storm etc.), Ulver (prefer the later ambient stuff though!), and Burzum.  As for Darkthrone , I love the old stuff, but I REALLY lovewhen they got more Motorheadish. I never got into Emperor for some reason. I like SOME Dimmu Borgir (and Old Man's Child), I feel like its over produced usually, but there's some good shit.

Ownage, hahahaha

Seriously though @ok boomer that rules! I often wonder what it would've been like to be old enough to witness all that shit happening in real time, especially by '87 there's a really phenomenal nucleus forming around the black metal style. You have the Black Mark L.p. & Blasphemy coming to in Canada & Sarcofago showing their shit in Brazil & so many more around the world simultaneously stumbling on to the same magical & necro sound, before it even became what its known for today. That's cool as shit! And then to go into the early 90s as a budding teen, what a ripe time to experience all that new music. I'm curious - did you perchance collect any tapes or records at that time?
Title: Re: Black Metal

Also please pardon the double post but @FrozenIndustries Zemial was such a killer & thoughful Rec, thank you my friend! I enjoyed the Ur L.p. very much, but even more so am loving the Necrolatry demo! To my ear the sound is overall more raw - which I very much prefer! Either way it's cool as fuck on both releases! Super sick to hear a more or less Northern style played by a Greek - there are even moments when the Norse / Swedish BM flourishes fuse with the trademark Greek melodies & atmospheres and it causes a super intriguing result! Good shit all around, thanks again!

Yeah, sure, I like Deafheaven and bands that have that kinda sound, but it's also not exactly right in a way... I don't know, it's hard to explain. It's kinda like music lego, like taking a bit of this and bit of that and yeah, it works. I really like Agalloch (I'll use the same example for consistency) because they still have the weird overly theatrical 'darkness' about them without necessarily sounding like some of the true black metal bands which are just a little difficult for me to sit and listen to. I don't know if that makes sense. But yeah, I do like Deafheaven, don't get me wrong, I've seen them play several times live and thought the first 3 records were great, the 4th one kinda being more of the same and haven't listened to the most recent one, but they're just missing something that is present in other bands. It's like a feeling of coldness or grimness that's missing from their music, that is an important ingredient for me when listening to this type of stuff.
