I've always thought of Bam and Dyrdek as low points in skate culture, and kind of American culture in general for that matter. The turn of the century was fucking awful. I know this about Novak and Bam as a partial fan of both. From highlight of their heyday Powell to Hstreet and Toy machine maybe Bam would pull his head out of his ass. Nope he settled for mediocrity in the skate scene early on.
Also in Novak's spoken in his dreamseller book how earlier on he had a place to stay all he had to do was stop doing dope. Not to also mention doing it was Phil and April house?!
Now wether or not one an alcoholic or a junkie if you've got the keys to the castle and that castle was sobriety then wouldn't you want to help out or is their relationship that strained from the abuse both have had to endure from mental to physical from both parties involved?

Maybe Novak has outgrown Bam. You don’t have to be friends with your childhood friends forever. It’s normal for people to drift apart specially when they have different objectives in life. Bam was always the alpha male/Bully of his crew but eventually people get tired of that shit. Bam truly finessed us getting us to believe he was ready to change, his second round of his 15 minutes of fame will soon be over. The horse perforated his colon so he probably died within 2 hours of filming that. I think he was a higher up for Microsoft or Boeing and they scrubbed his name because of it. I’ve never wanted to research it but I guess there was a whole “Retreat” out there for people to fuck animals. When they finally cracked down on it every animal got put down (or shot) because if you have sex with an animal in the States they wont allow them to be adopted or re integrated into society. So that next time we were itching to get fucked up, we’d just look at that poster with shit cut out from People magazine and that would somehow keep us sober.
As if that wasn’t cheap enough, the rehab never bought new magazines. So by the time they got to me they were so cut up and picked through that all that was left was pictures of Bea Arthur’s 80th birthday party, the Happy Days reunion and the cardboard subscription card.
So now if I ever think about slipping back into the nightmare of drug and alcohol abuse, I just pull out that poster and look at an old Bea Arthur and a young Henry Winkler and People magazine’s PO address and tell myself “Never Again.”

People always get pissy if you talk about the program, working the steps , trying to improve. They want to sit there and feel sorry for themselves. Nobody want to do shit, just go to the meetings and listen to half baked ideas from the people that never bothered to read the Big Book.
Most of the people get bent out of shape when you mention narcotisc, even though a lot of the did pills.
NA: Pretty much the dumbest of the bunch.
Work ethic worse than AA. Doing the steps is not important for most. Tons of bitching about those damn Police/Social workers. Too much talking about drugs and previous criminal activity. Very low IQ, overall.

You're an old timer in CMA if you've got 3 weeks off crystal. And once you hit 3 weeks, you're some guru who goes around telling everybody how to run their lives and have a "constant connection" to their higher power. Frightening energy, totally manic, exhausting, and to be avoided if at all possible. And, similar to CA, if you talk about anything other than being in gratitude, you're not "in the solution" and you're dragging the meeting down. And of course, the most preachy people relapse around 2 to 3 years in and then either disappear forever or die.

impressed at the perspective here and i'm now sorry for coming at any of you over it. bottom line is addiction is largely a manifestation of narcissism and all you're really seeing in these meetings is a narcissists convention which ends up being exactly what it sounds like structured in the loose form of a church service.
i'm happy for everyone that can get out from under it. even happier when people can kick their shit and keep perspective.

Novak was pretty good in the early nineties. Everyone here drive hours to skate a crappy park. He was always the little kid in Bucky's nice car. I always thought he was really good. I couldn't believe the guy in those BAM videos was the same person. And for back then, he did his tricks half decent as well.

My next door neighbor was a major gambling addict. He lost his house, his savings, his wife’s savings, his kid’s college fund, everything. He’s really active in GA, s and he’s a nut to begin with, but in a funny way. He’s like a character out of a movie. Born and raised in South Philly, he’s a tough, no-nonsense, Italian cave man. He’s a natural storyteller and he’s got outrageous stories for days. He calls everyone “Cuz” and he mows his lawn in slacks and a wife beater.

I knew a dude who went to rehab for video poker addiction.
From open to close, dude would even spend hours playing the ones that had fake payouts just for the kick of seeing the lights and numbers. He got kicked out week 1 for trying to huf some shit in the lightbulbs.

I went to GA meetings with a friend of mine in Calgary who didn't want to go alone. I was surprised to hear that the same amount of neurotransmitters, hypothetically , get sparked from a gambling win as smoking crack.

We weren't even allowed outside at the rehab I attended. But I'm pretty sure it was also a mental facility as my roommate had tried to cut his wrist off with a machete. He also wore sweatpants and always had a chubbub that was impossible to ignore. He was pretty intense.
Yeah, Bam sounds like hes already making excuses so he can leave. Also sounds like hes trying to get on IPATH with all that tree talk, but doesn't realize they went under a long time ago. Be fascinating to watch him transition into a hippy.
