Title: Kareem Campbell
Post by: mboy on January 16, 2019, 07:38:11 AM
What the fuck happen to this guy back in the day to go from such a high profile skateboarder to pretty much invisible in every aspect?
Always though he probably had too much of an ego to ride for someone else company after running Menace/MNC/All-City/City Stars 1.0, but even second coming of City Stars was horrible and hardly any sign of footage from the guy himself.

Remember he had an interview in Juice a bunch of years back, never read it unfortunately. Would be awesome if someone for example could hook up some scans!

he didn't have a part n street cinema, and I pretended to be surprised.
He didn't even look at a skateboard in the 411 day in the life.

He moved out of Cali now lives in Texas still skates and still runs City Stars as a local company he also does real estate... He owned Axion shoes also back in the day and was in Tony Hawk pro skater when they were making big money so he is paid... He said he was just over how wack the industry was at the time so he fell back around 2003...dude is a legend couldn't really see him riding for any of these companies tho...

Menace 2.0 or MNC, the current company that's making boards, is different. Bobshirt is a really nice guy named Tim, he runs the Deckaid board exhibit with his wife as well as the interviews. He made Menace tees awhile ago as an homage to/appreciation of the company in its heyday. I have one, he sent one to me when I bought some boards off him. He obviously wasn't making them to greatly profit off the Menace name so it's bizarre why Kareem would get litigious. I guess money really changes people.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I'm not saying your wrong but to me, since Tim ran the excellent Bobshirt site for many years and helped keep the World/Menace legacies alive in many ways, plus the fact that he only made a few shirts and didn't mass-produce them to cash in, that doesn't mean a lawsuit should be the outcome. I don't know all the facts but based on what I do know, it's petty to me. Like when Nikki Sixx sued Vans because they used a picture of him with Trujillo in an ad.

Kareem lost that trademark (never had one in the first place?) in the 90s, what kind of claim does he have to Menace now?

Kareem never sued me. Once I explained myself to him and explained how much money I wasn’t making we were good. I think I made 30 shirts and gave away half that.

I even got him to agree to shoot an interview during all that drama (never squander an opportunity ha). We’ll see if that ever happens though.

Let’s not pretend skateboarding hasn’t been ripping off logos/designs for their own benefit (for decades). Every company in existence has likely gotten a cease and desist from someone.

Then when it happens to them, it’s time to lawyer up. Foh.

Kareem had an interview with Muckmouth back in 2013

Read it. It's interesting. It goes over him checking his pager during lines and talks about trademark infringement with circa and stuff. Kareem is sick. Dude just looked cool on a skateboard. I always played as him in the Tony Hawk games.

To do real estate etc. in Texas is one thing, but im certain that people with more of a demanding job has been able to squeeze in some regular type of skating. Especially in 20 fucking years time. Kareem is one of my all time favorite skaters so its nothing too negative, just disappointing haha!

Instagram clip was cool, even small shit like that would not be too hard to put up on a regular bases within such long period of time. Through social media or even better, through his own fucking company.

Anyone read his interview in Juice? saw the photos that was in there but could never manage to read the writing. This would be like 2 years old maybe?

I get that you’d like to see some clips, I would too, but if he’s not trying to maintain a presence in skateboarding why the fuck would he bother? His legacy is unfuckable with, he’s got nothing to prove. I like guys that can just walk away from it all.

came across some boner on youtbube comments who said Kareem was always talented, just a shame he had such a bad style.  I replied I know it's all opinion and personal preference, much like anything in life, and you're certainly entitled to your wrong opinion.

His Trilogy part is in my top 3. Bummer that he didn't put out more.

Having a skateboard company is trying to maintain a presence in skateboarding. If not based strictly on your own name, you got a company up and running. Not sure how many board sales City Star 2.0 has had since it started but I am certain more people including myself would be following it on a regular basis as well as buying product if  there was at least a few Kareem decks with good graphics along with a few clips here and there like the instagram clip someone posted earlier.

This would make City Stars more profitable as sales would increase, so if you are dealing with real estate and investments you should be able to see the benefits for you company by putting out some footage, anything, along with decent product, as a way to grow your business.

Then again, if you dont have to care about money, can afford to have a company that not really does much but still exists and just skating for fun real low-key, your probably in a better situation then plenty of other people struggling to stay relevant and earn a few bucks! Less pressure and more free!

... would Ricky and Natas have a right to be bummed if I started printing shirts?

You seem like a contentious jerk so yeah, probably.

Hey, goldenbullcow, it's wild how morally opposed you are to making a run of shirts, but trying to dig up details of a kid's death to the point of obsession is fair game, huh? Fuck off.

Anyways, back to brass tacks, Kareem had two tricks in the first Boys of Summer.

Was a huge Kareem Campbell fan back in the mid to late 90s. Have a Menace hat he signed in 1997 sitting on the shelf next to me right now actually. Most recent footage I recall seeing of him was in this Etnies skate and create years ago. Was still looking quite comfortable on a board at that time.

someone posted an IG clip in photos/videos a year or two ago with a couple clips of him at a park. back tail was one of the tricks and maybe a nosegrind.

found it:

This makes me happy. Nice drop.

Any Kareem footage is a blessing. I don’t expect much from a dude in his mid 40s with kids working full time. As long as there is 1 Kareem clip a year I’m happy. Those few ledge tricks made me wanna go skate.

I'm looking for a clip of Kareem doing a fakie 5-0 fakie front shove out on a bench. It was filmed at night, on a wooden bench with an iron angle I think. It's neither in Trilogy nor in 20 Shot Sequence but I know it was filmed in 95 or 96, around that time. Does this ring a bell? Thank you!

kinda wild to think that if the city stars team stuck around that they would've had one of the most high-profile skaters of all time and a relevant supporting cast. if i was straight with my money, i probably would stay out of the limelight too

Thanks, Lou. <3 I've got a pretty terrible memory but that trick always stood out to me. His opening tricks too where he ollies a picnic table lengthwise and then does one of the most beautiful kickflips ever - so good. Kareem just oozes style and the resolution and audio of his clips were so good for back in the day.
