Title: Best skateboarding shoes ever thread
Post by: Technique on February 08, 2019, 07:51:41 AM
Almost certain there’s already been a thread like that, but the academic year is coming to an end and me and my friends are making a skate shoe for our thesis project. We want to know what are slap’s favorite shoes, what kind of technology people like and what looks the best on the eyes of the public. Also, if there’s anybody who has any info on how and where to sample a shoe and how much it would cost, we would really appreciate it. Anyways, go off, slap, every post is appreciated here.

We’re industrial design students and we’re designing a shoe, not writing a paper about it. I thought it was clear from my OP.
But thank you for the suggestion.

Well it’s basically the same shoe concept.
Dunk weapon accel; to me that are all based off the same thing and The syntax is somewhat similar but has the rubber protector too.

Loved the hsu as well, the thing we forget about those old emerica vulcs was how quickly the sole went bald tho - super shallow tread.

Sampling a shoe is a long and difficult process. Y'all won't have enough time to outsource it, assuming your final reviews are in May. When I was in ID school I made a shoe, sewed it myself and board-lasted it (old form of shoe construction) and glued it to a sole that I designed, modeled in Solidworks, and 3d printed. Wasn't a functional shoe, but was a looksie prototype at least!

Hey, thanks for the advice man! We definitely thought about lasting the upper ourselves and possibly just outsourcing the sole mold production. But 3D printing it does sound like a good idea.

My favorite skate shoes are ones I remember skating in high school before I had knee surgery, which changed skating in a few different ways for me.

Remember skating a couple pairs of Accels because I loved that shoe, and dug the Es Koston 1 a lot. There was a Circa shoe Appleyard skated all the time before his pro shoe, that was a lot of fun to skate. I also remember liking the Appleyard Circa shoe as well.

Overall, the Accels were probably my favorite from back in the day.
Currently the CTAS pro is probably my favorite to skate in. About to start skating some one stars soon, but they are nearly past being broken in from using them at work.

My favorite sole is the g6 cup. Every shoe I've had with that is great.

I love the feel of the marana mid. Emerica hsu 2 mid is fantastic. The globe mahalo appleyards felt great but the sole wore out real quick. NB 913 are really nice too, the most 'tech' shoe I've ever had.

For thinner shoes, marana vulc mid is best. For thicker shoes, I'd say Reynolds g6.

I recently had a good deal on some State Salem lows. Skated them twice and the felt real boggy and flexible in the sole. I realise now that I'm liking a stiffer soul. Currently skating some HUF Cromer 1 and they feel better when it comes to stiffness but im not really feeling the zero padding anywhere. I'm considering going for some cup-soles next. Can anyone recommend some nice cup-soles?

I also did ID and made a skate shoe for my thesis. Very unlikely you will get a sample made in time. Best bet is to buy a last on ebay (there are a bunch right now for air jordan 1s, about $100 a set I think) watch whatever vids on youtube you can find about sewing shoes together, and as stated above, model your tooling in solidworks or whatever software you are comfortable with that can be converted into a 3d print. If you want to get crazy you can make a mold with your 3d print and actually pour some rubber like compound into it for a more realistic finish. Hopefully you have someone in you program who knows anything about shoes.. Anytime I had a question about something I always got an " I don't know anything about skateboarding or shoes, so I cant really help you." Needless to say I did not do so hot. I also did not design my tooling in a 3d modeling software because I didn't know how, and I was too much of a sh*t head to learn, so I made my sole from clay. It didn't look great.

off subject question, is grip really a deciding factor in buying shoes?  I have never once thought about the sole of a shoe or what the grip pattern looks like, but I see people on here and in real life stressing it.  I remember when the HUF classic came out everyone was scared of the sole.

I also skate mob maybe that makes a difference.

The pattern hasn't got much to do with grip from my experience. The formulation of the rubber on the other hand does. I've had shoes that are too slippery for me and some shoes are still ok but I'd prefer them to be more grippy. The pattern is very important when it comes to picking up pebbles though. I'm not gonna buy States again as they pick up pebbles like mad. I really like the shoes otherwise but I can't have my grip getting ruined by soles filled with pebbles. Same goes for many other shoes. I really like the soles on Vans Pro Classics. Won't pick up pebbles and are very grippy. Awesome.
