Does anyone know what happened to the Arto Saari episodes of Epicly Later'd? They got pulled from YouTube, and the video player was removed from the VICE site. I tried reaching out to VICE, Patrick O'Dell, and Arto but could not get a response from anyone. Arto's was one of my favorites. I've probably re-watched those 5-6 times already. Any info would be much appreciated.

I think they are supposed to play the originals on the viceland channel, so maybe having the eps on YouTube would take away the need to watch it on tv.

That blows, the Arto one was really good. I used to go to VBS.TV and be able to watch all of them, but that site got absorbed into Vice.com which has links to all the epicly laterd episodes but when you click on the video player it says Invalid Authorization Response. They need to fix that shit. But really, what else would you expect from Vice.

Arto has a 6 parter that is close to an hour long if not longer. I think it was from like 2012, the 5th season. Top notch shit.

Yes, there was definitely an Arto episode. It was great. Talked about coming to the US not knowing any English, living the straight-edge vegan lifestyle with Geoff and Templeton, Shane's death, his stint with Alien, his foray into photography, etc. It's a gem for sure.

My guess is that it has something to do with the fact that his episodes had a “presented by Oakley” ad at the beginning. That was the only thing that separated his from the rest if I am not mistaken.

I was wondering the same thing. Tried to go back and watch it about a year or two ago and it wasn’t there. Wonder if it had something to do with copyright infringement in the episode because all of the other old ones are still watchable. Definitely was one of the best ones though, it’s a bummer.

Do you have a source for him talking about being bummed on his Workshop days? I find it hard to believe that it was taken down just for that. There wasn't anything inflammatory in there. It's just something that happened in his past, and they even highlighted the fact that returning to Flip was his redemption song and what he was always meant to do.

Vice has so much potential. But it’s just an unorganized mess of content. Especially here in Canada. It’s a huge let down. I’d be all over that shit if it was all under one roof & easy to navigate ... navigation that actually sends you to working content.

This is an intriguing thread. I actually contacted O'Dell many years ago about a clip on Vice I couldn't find, and he said that he's heard of whole episodes going missing and he wouldn't know where it is. Seems like it's common for Vice, which sucks.

Oh shit that’s totally ringing a bell now. He got a heart surgery or something and then immediately started smoking/drinking, right? And they talked about Ed breaking his board on that huge lip slide and not being able to go back because Arto was crushing so hard that day he didn’t want tofuck it up for him...?

This one was really good, re-watched it again this time last year. Had something about Ed telling him he's Finnish and destined for the beer/cigs that he abstained from for years because of his heart problems, and it also had a healthy amount of references to Penny as well.

I've looked for the arto episode a few times over the past couple of years. For sure one of the better ones, with lots of Rowley and Templeton when they were all still rad.
At least the Behind the French Fred Scenes videos are still available. So, so sick.

i messaged o’dell on instagram earlier this year asking if there would be any new episodes coming. he replied “idk” i told him that i enjoyed the first season on vice tv and how it seemed odd to me that they did the whole first televised season the year before last but then, 2018 came and there was unfortunately not a second season to follow it up. he just replied with a crying emoji. i guess it’s safe to say that there will not be any more epicly later’d episodes coming our way and, that’s a real bummer for me.

Edit: When you google search 'Arto Saari Epicly Later'd', there's a lot of pages where the videos must of previously been embedded, most likely linked back to the vice website. As the video has been deleted at the source, the video player is now missing. Would it be possible to use one of those time machine websites to view one of those pages back a couple of years ago when the series was still up? Or is drastically overstating the functionality of those time machine services?

Not sure if that’s still the plan but I would love it. It was my favorite episode behind the Dylan episode.

Yeah! Not sure if he will reply, but I’ll give it a shot. I think most of the ones that are still on YouTube are safe, but I have no idea. Not a bad idea to rip your favorites while they’re still there.

Man, this thread just reminded me of how some epic online parts might just disappear. Today, I was trying to find the Dennis Durrant Adidas part, which is one of my favorite online only parts in recent years, and its pretty much scrubbed from the web in sound outside of Dailymotion. I remember the same thing happened with Josh Matthews Welcome to Organika part. It sucks companies are just taking down parts for server space you expect to stay up forever. At least with DVD's and VHS you'd expect someone to have a copy somewhere to rip if it was scrubbed.

when vice bought EL from patrick a long time agothey fucked up, and trimmed a lot of shit down. for example Pops used to have a 10 part episode that got edited down to 10 minutes. I'm sure there are some that just got scraped.

Feel free to download these videos off the streaming services where they have been encased. The company that paid for them isn't going to last forever so expecting them to archive the culture is a huge mistake.

This is why streaming is bad for things that you love. It's convenient, but when priorities change, or companies go in a different direction, things disappear. You don't own anything you buy on iTunes, you're renting.

They've done episodes on the vast majorities of great pros from the late 90s to the mid 00s. And Dill had one. I think they just chilled in his apartment. I can't remember anything aside from that because it was forever ago.

The Dill one was gnarly. It starts off in his bathroom with blood spattered all over the wall and him talking about his infected tooth, and how he would just spit blood on the wall every morning to inspire him to get it fixed.

Yeah, been noticing the lack of EL episodes for years now. Apparently there’s a gonz and hosoi episode from the first season, Jim Greco had a long episode too I think, among others. Pretty sure if you cruise back to 06/07-ish in UWTB you can find discussions of them with no source intact. I would love to see a longer pops episode

Kirchart and Arto are two undisputed GOATs of the professional street skateboarding industry. Nothing can take that away. It can be tainted, sure, but those two guys have already made their impact on skating in a big way.
But yeah I understand your sentiments, I wouldn't want my romanticised idea of the Finnish demi-god to be tainted either.

I listened to this podcast interview with Patrick O'Dell about a month ago. From memory he said he wants to do more EL eps but that Vice don't have plans to do so.
The guy doing the interview isn't the best host and his skating knowledge is fairly limited but it's still worth a listen. There's still lots of interesting insights into professional skating and a few stories I hadn't heard before.
