Title: Backpacks, Messenger Bags, Travel Bags, etc. Favorites?
Post by: Frank on March 07, 2019, 06:24:39 AM
have looked via search bar for a thread but only found brand specific threads.

what bags do use and why?

i have this super big vans rolltop backpack that is surprinsingly tough and basically a rip off of some bike messenger type backpack but without real bike travel features like a solid backpanel that i have been using for about 8 years now to carry bigger loads or when i travel.

never really owned a travel bag, just used gym bags and big backpacks for flights and stuff.

i had a cheap poler backpack that i got for 20 bucks once but that thing was honestly trash and meanwhile broke on all fronts. looking for something that can carry around 20 liters.

i like this messenger bag, because my right shoulder is fucked so it might be nice to just carry stuff on one side. you can also make it so you basically wear it like a cross strapped backpack. it would also be still cheaper to get it sent from indonesia to europe than to buy a similar bag from a brand like chrome.

Chrome (preferably the Made in USA ones). Indestructible and I get a bro deal on them.

For traveling with skate product, I loved my incase p-rod duffle bag I used to have.  That thing was perfect

I've been biking a lot, hit up the chrome xmas sale and got two:

https://www.chromeindustries.com/product/kadet-nylon-messenger-bag/BG-196.html?dwvar_BG-196_size=NA&dwvar_BG-196_color=CAMO&cgid=messenger_bags (https://www.chromeindustries.com/product/kadet-nylon-messenger-bag/BG-196.html?dwvar_BG-196_size=NA&dwvar_BG-196_color=CAMO&cgid=messenger_bags)

and

https://www.chromeindustries.com/product/urban-ex-rolltop-18l-backpack/BG-217.html?dwvar_BG-217_color=KHBK&cgid=backpacks (https://www.chromeindustries.com/product/urban-ex-rolltop-18l-backpack/BG-217.html?dwvar_BG-217_color=KHBK&cgid=backpacks)

the Kadet is small but that's what I was looking for. Just a comfy messenger style bag for days spent fucking around in the city. I can fit a water bottle, snack, and some other odds and ends comfortably. The Urban Ex is waterproof and looks really good, can fit a good amount of stuff too. Kind of wish I had gone for the bigger size, but I like it a lot anyway. I always liked Chrome's stuff from afar, the quality does not disappoint.

I want that bag someone on here posted at some point. It could hold a board  it could be a duffle bag a messenger bag or back pack it was like Optimus prime as a bag. I forgot what it was called.

I recently bought that small sling bag that orchard has. Never thought I’d buy a small bag like that but the orchard one looked to dope to pass up.

i originally planned on buying the urban ex 18l rolltop, but couldn't find a good enough deal on it. then got super curious about the lbb stuff.

i ordered the life behind bars messenger bag last night. they even already sent it out. ups says it will deliver monday. will report back. pretty psyched about it! 123,- euros including shipping for the smaller one that carries 22 liters.

There was actually a good sale on their site like 2 weeks ago.  I just a got new one to replace the one I had for like 10 years for $65.  They're solid bags

I never felt like carrying my lock on me while biking, I usually keep it mount on the frame and put the extra loop cable over my shoulder. Even if I fall less on a bike, it feels to me as unsafe as skating with my keys on a carabiner.

As for bags, I usually use the Chrome Bravo 2.0 as a "daily or up to 4 days trip (including plane)" bag, and an eastpak sawer that have more pockets than the usual model without being bigger, classic euro-plaza gear.

i think this is a very good bag. it's always good to be able to carry around at least a towel and a water bottle. the small shoulder straps may look uncomfortable at first, but they give the bag a sleek, fashionable look.

Thank you. It's hard to find straps that fit my massive Pecs properly while also being fashionable. You are right though they aren't the most comfortable.

I've always been the guy who has useless shit in his bag. I was using the chrome mini metro, but I've always preferred an actual backpack to a messenger bag, so I picked up the fortnight model they make. Both were great, well made, and you can put so much stuff in there. Theres videos of people on youtube packing things in there and it's kind of funny. As everyone else said though you can definitely find it on sale somewhere.

I rock a 25L Patagonia Arbor Classic backpack, it has 2 compartments and basic shoulder straps. I like simple backpacks that are rectangular and boxy in their shape.
Most importantly it has no zipper for the main compartment, just a lid with two straps, it makes it easy throw stuff in and easy to see and pick up whatever's inside.

I got an REI giftcard this past christmas so I decided to upgrade my daily backpack and went with the Patagonia Black Hole daypack. I really don't think I could see myself dropping $130 on a backpack, so the gift card definitely motivated this purchase, but it has been a great upgrade so far. Waterproof, plenty of room for all sorts of stuff, comfortable to wear.

I've always used slim backpacks. I often ride with a backpack, so it is very important for me that the backpack is light and does not upset the balance during the ride. This is very convenient when the backpack fits snugly to the back. I usually used small backpacks, since all the little things that I store there do not take up much space. If you are looking for a model for 20 liters, then I advise you to look at it at backpacks.global (https://backpacks.global/compare/type/commuter-backpack/), since they have a fairly large selection of backpacks for different directions. I prefer the urban style as it is most suitable for my needs.

I just recently bought the Nixon Hauler 35L backpack. It has a ton of space and the way it opens makes it really easy to get to your stuff. I just went on a work trip for a week and had room for clothes, toiletries, laptop, tablet, and accessories. The best part is that it’s still small enough to carry on an airplane.

My only complaint is that the board straps are kind of small, so my board tends to slide down and hit my legs when walking. I also ride a 9” board, so my board is pretty heavy. I’m sure it would be better if I just took the trucks off.

Besides the straps, I really like the bag a lot.

Patagonia Black Hole. Made much better than most of the skate/cycling oriented brands and free lifetime repairs. I also liked my Baileyworks messenger. Mountain Hardwear makes an affordable alternative to Patagonia anything else that rivals it will be much more. I mostly use a backpack for rock climbing and my last one survived 10 years of abuse and didn’t need any repairs. I decided to wash it and didn’t know there was a fish oil capsule in it and that smell never came out.

I've been using the Nixon Gamma: https://www.nixon.com/us/en/gamma-backpack/C3024-000-00.html#start=1

(https://www.nixon.com/dw/image/v2/AAYF_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-masterCatalog_Nixon/default/dw0a303123/products/C3024-000-view1.jpg?sw=980&sh=1200&sm=fit&sfrm=png)

Marketing:
600D polyester exterior made from REPREVE® Our Ocean™ recycled ocean plastics. 1680D REPREVE Bottom Panel. 200D Polyester interior made from recycled PET

I mainly use it back and forth to the gym on bike to carry workout gear; as for carrying my board, the straps don't really secure it, you just put it in and have the front truck hang on the top strap and wrap the bottom one around...I was hoping for a snugger fit (which the Dakine/Nike RPM bags look to give) but there isn't enough velcro on the strap to do it.

Works well enough.

For travel, I made the switch from oddly shaped "messenger" backpacks and regular luggage to an Osprey Farpoint 40 (https://www.osprey.com/us/en/product/fairview-travel-pack-carry-on-40-FAIRVEW40_706.html) carry-on bag and I will say that I never plan to go back to a different style. I've used it now on three different continents for multiple week trips and it has never failed to carry everything I need. It's lightweight, comfortable, and fits easily into the overhead bin on any flight I've never paid for a checked bag on any international flight since I've had this. Finally, the ability for your backpack to operate like a suitcase is something you don't know you need until you have it. I have no interest in digging around in the bottom of a dark bag to find my clothes - fuck that - unzip this and grab what I need.

It's worth noting that this has nothing at all to do with skating. I don't bring my skateboard on international trips, and when I travel with my skateboard, I stick it in a nylon skateboard bag I got from eBay. This bag is definitely for traveling light, but not minimalist - just bringing clothes and toiletries. I would recommend larger bags for anyone carrying camera gear and a laptop, a bluetooth speaker, etc.

Just wanna make a strong recommendation for the DAKINE space split travel backpack space 38L.

What made me buy it was there’s a separate compartment for shoes and most backpacks that are this size don’t have that feature. It can be used as a duffel bag also.

Edit: picture of bag packed out…

i use frontside bumbags.

its just a regular bumbag, but has straps to hold your board too. cheaper than a backpack and its small enough i can keep it in my backpack as a sub-bag for just skate stuff.

Does bumbags still exist?

Did Bobby long cash out hard when the Fanny market was hot. Dude probably made millions at zumiez for a solid few years.

Documentary about that company

Decent Hardware makes great skate bags, they have both a carry handle and backpack straps. Because of the latter I use it also as a general purpose "suitcase" even when I'm not taking my board. I have the 38 inch one, it has the downside that some airlines say it's too long and charge extra, would have maybe bought a smaller one if I knew that beforehand.

As a normal skate backpack I just have some Vans one. It's fine except the straps are a bit short, a 9" deck just barely fits if you don't have rails on it.

Just another reminder to never buy anything from FTC. Worst quality backpack i have ever had by far and extremely expensive. They should just close their doors for good. Fuck ftc.

This looks interesting. Can you pack in pads and helmet too? Videos an pics left it bit unclear how big compartments there are besides the one where complete goes.

I’ve used the Volcom duffle for a while, my favorite duffle I’ve had and has a skate compartment. I want to try one of those DB duffles but they’re pricey.

As everyone else said too, chrome bags are sick and last forever.

That Nike skate backpack looks pretty good but I just hate that it’s Nike
