-
What? Shut up Gurney.
-
I thought it was cool for a while until I realized that I was watching grown men in ski masks play with toys on Jersey barriers (while being "dark" and oh so "metal").
Yeah, it's fucking corny (so is like 75-80 percent of the skateboarding industry tbh).
-
somebody had to say it
-
Its not corny just a little arty but the thing is when it comes to skating metal kinda went out with skinny jeans so the barrier kult gets left lookin wack. The skater behind it should have gotten farther imo when he was a regular sponsored skater. He was pretty rad.
-
Anything you do that leans into a black metal aesthetic is gonna come off cheesy. Also, fuck an $85 hoodie. That said, I like the videos.
-
I've been thinking this for years.
-
Less corny than trap music normal speed trick and a second later same trick slowed down camo pants hashtag lightwork followed by 3 really quick slomo shots of bails
-
What a boring cult. Where’s the sex at? Who joins a cult just to skate?
-
I've always assumed....that it was supposed to be silly. Isn't it supposed to be silly?
-
I forgot what video it is but there's a vid on youtube of them and they go out into the woods to ritual "sacrifice" a board. I'm fairly certain they're aware how silly it is. And even if they are being serious, black metal is a really melodramatic genre so it's par for the course.
-
Yeah, don't take the image too seriously. Metal is more often than not corny as hell and that's part of the fun. I really like their videos, raw and primitive.
-
What a boring cult. Where’s the sex at? Who joins a cult just to skate?
I'm def only joining a cult if there is massive fuckage going on.

It was a show on Vice with McCrank and he was with them. He looked shook at first, then looked like he thought it was funny.
Beyond the Black Metal stuff I find it weird and so restricting to only skate those barriers. Do they carry their boards to these little DIYs?

I'm gonna guess when they're not "in character" that they skate anything.
-
Well BaKu ain't as corny as DGK's recent mask obsession (Am I supposed to be scared of your hardflips?):

Do you people not realise that Barrier Kult isn't supposed to be taken seriously? It's supposed to be corny. I can't believe that actually has to be spelled out for some people. Really, holy fuck, how serious do some of you take skateboarding?

It started out in canadian skate mags like color and others before becoming known about in the us. The 1st inception wasnt meant to be corny at all. It was more like a straight forward art thing as i remember. I laugh that people assume its a joke tho, that in itself being funny.

McCrank knows who they are, being from Vancouver. It's not hard to figure out who the main guys are.

Who's who?
I know Deer Man is Mike McKinlay, Sam McKinlay is Depth Leviathan Dweller (he's also the guy behind The Rita harsh noise walls project), PD of Skull Skates is a founding member (vertical cliffs of eastern shores), Austin Kanfoush is Permafrost, Haslam is the only one with a beard under his mask (the Muskellunge guy if I remember right).
I think Danforth and Adam Hoppkins is involved too (I think Adam is vlad the mountain impaler maybe? he is unmasked in the original horde video), I can't imagine Sam Hitz not being involved either. Can't figure out who LUTHER is even though he has obvious tattoo's nor who CTHYLLA (the girl) is.

Do people actually think DGK is ghetto? All the white rich kids used to rock it back in middle school and used to use the n word like crazy.
-
Anybody ever heard of a guy named Venom? He used to dress up like an 80's rocker in the early 2000's and skate. He was at the Kids In Emerica premiere with some hoe's trying to jump the Pharmacy stairs hubba on a beach cruiser. Me and my friends will never forget that guy. He had flyers that said like "Let Me Loose" and I think "I want action". Been looking for stuff of him lately but can't find them.
-
After finding out Haslam was in BAKU I thought they were serious. I dig the whole horror vibe and intercut movie clips. I do get bored after a while and have to take a break; there is definitely some gnar stuff going on.

A christian skate park buddy of mine posted about them for a few days because he seriously thought the YouTube board sacrifice video involved actual satanic sacrifice.

If you scroll down the first 10 comments or so, someone tags BAKU and they respond with ‘Stay off our barriers, Andy’
I’m not sure whether that’s funny that they don’t like him (since image-wise he is the complete opposite) or sad that claiming some public barriers as their own property.
Either way that wallride around the corner gap was wizard level
-
Didn't they go to Japan on a skate trip only to find out there is no jersey barriers their?

Yes, he’s still around but not as Venom. Are you from Nebraska?

I've always assumed....that it was supposed to be silly. Isn't it supposed to be silly?
Nope, they are dead serious. In the new Canadian love letters they interview the head dude and he talks about how they have very strict rules and ranks. He uses an example saying that certain patches have to be approved before you can wear them. Kinda funny. I back it though, seems like they don’t really give a fuck about the industry and are doing their own thing.

Wow no way! What's his name? What's the story with him? I'm from So Cal and we just saw him at the Kids In Emerica premiere in Victorville. I want to say he had a site and Nebraska sounds familiar for some reason. I think he was at some active demos too or something. I've thought about this dude for 15 years. Me and my friends still talk about him.

There's no way they take themselves seriously. They're grown adults, playing dress ups, pushing USELESS WOODEN TOYS up barriers. They are not Charles Manson.
My friends and I have this secret carpark we go to, not many other locals know about it, or just don't care, but we love it, and it's not such a stretch of the imagination to picture us getting dressed up in costumes to skate there, coming up with a silly name, filming some stuff, and trying to sell some merch. It would add an element of fun to something we already love.
I think that's literally all this is.
-
If they take themselves seriously and are all fuck the industry then this shoe commercial is seriously stupid but you cant fuck with the skating and the aesthetic it's fucking Gnar all the way.

Andy Anderson and them interact on their own Instagram and Andy rides for PD's Hot Shop, PD is the owner of Skull Skates and a member of BA.KU himself. But you're right, they must be meanies I mean they wear balaclavas after all.

I know one of the BAKU guys. He's a fucking cool person, loves skateboarding more than most.
Of course is OTT but I love it.
-
Skateboarding is filled with corniness, nearly every team and company image has humor within it at their expense. But to deny the skill it takes to skate Jersey barriers and just extremely steep/tight transition like that in general is ridiculous. Deer man is Mike Mckinlay and he destroys. Vertical Cliffs is Adam Hopkins, watch any footage of him...amazing. It’s just a side project for these guys, not to be taken too seriously. Outside of that, I’d say pretty much every BAKU member is extremely skilled at transition/street. And as others have mentioned, PD’s/skull skates is about as “core” as it gets and is a highly respected scene in Canada.

BAKU is just like a lot of things in metal in that they are totally joking but also think that some of the stuff they're talking about is cool. There's like .005% metal in skateboarding these days and half of it is corny as fuck (yes I'm talking about Jerry Gurney) so I don't know why OP is so bummed on these guys.

i think this is a neat idea, but for the crew name you would need to include triangles and upside down crosses and shit to make up the name, instead actual letters.
-
okay fuck a bunch you guys hating on DMODW! Yeah I'll be the one with unpopular opinion, I liked the idea as an abstract view. The point I think is to consider the thought of what they're skating instead of who is skating, giving credence to a kvlt at large than an individual.

-
I think they were trying to somewhat "disrupt" the industry at the time and honestly it probably needed some shaking up. Were they 100% successful in their mission? Probably not, but they did probably make a few people think outside of the box in regards to music, tricks, board shapes etc. and their small/ tight crew vibe is kinda congruent with what's happening with all these microbrands at the moment; I could even draw comparisons between them and say the Magenta crew in terms of breaking from the mold/ treading their own path.
I don't listen to black metal, nor do I skate jersey barriers but if you're looking for people to hate within the industry then the BAKU crew should be very low on your list of priorities imho

I was gonna say something pretty satanic about how that MA. KU. video pissed all over your PA. KU one. But then you posted this, and I thought about the dreamcatcher, and how a good nights sleep is so fucking KULT that it really calmed me down, and I just thought, Man, aren't we all just trying our best to have fun?
I'd prefer a 60's-style Inherent Vice-esque skateboarding-based kult, personally. But I'm just not sure yet what you'd skate (maybe only those weird concrete waves you sometimes get at seaside towns?) or what kind of mask would be aesthetically/thematically suitable. But I know the drugs and outfits and soundtrack would be sick.

There's a little kid who yells "yay" at 2:19-2:20 of this video and it kills me.

MA.KU. rips but what’re they all secretly called? Bedman of dark stains? Ritualistic fabric swatches?

All the people behind the Barrier Kult are fucking amazing.
Sadly, skateboarding itself is corny.

Like anything else to do with skull, it makes no fuckin sense at all
Funny nonsense with a skull slapped on it, easy to make sales to little kids and old crusty dudes
The way these guys front with their ski masks and weapons is lame as hell though. At this point, I'm convinced it's like the teamsters union - dudes who were too soft to be bikers so their families hooked them up lmao

Ba.Ku. or Ma.Ku.?
Nah. I’m down with Manwolfs.
