Title: Venture 5.8 or 6.1
Post by: Starm on October 11, 2019, 12:07:05 PM
Has anyone tried out the 8.75 or 8.5 ventures? I'm riding 149 Forged Hollow Indys right now but i've heard that Ventures are pretty similar.

I've been riding the 6.1's for a few weeks now and I'm really liking them. I replaced the bushings with Bones mediums. I'm riding them on a 8.75 deck with 55mm Spitfire tablets.

I've been riding Aces for the past 5 years and I love them. However, I was ready to try out the new Ventures when all the hype started up. I can lock into slappies just as well as they Aces and carve ditches just as well.

The only thing I can't figure out is that with Aces, I'd have to use small risers with 55mm or above wheels. Not so with the Ventures. No need for risers. Maybe Aces are a little lower? I don't know. I'd say give them a try. If you don't like them, you could always flip them on ebay or to a homie.

Switched from 148 Thunders to 5.8 Venture highs like 6 months ago. Right now I am on the 5.8 Titaniums. Very similar to Thunder. Feels a tad higher, turning feels pretty much the same to me.

Damn it. I knew I should’ve given em a longer go

I just sold of a set of 5.8ti (enjoy them!). I ride pretty loose and couldn't get them to work out. if I was moving away from Indys I'd go to Thunder.

I always felt like I could switch back and forth between Indy and venture with little adjustment. Thunder feels like a whole different animal (both good and bad).

As a side note, what size boards are you riding with the 144s, Xen?

That's sort of my point, if I am moving away from an Indy feel, I'd rather take the full jump and go to Thunder instead of the half-stop Venture switch.

Board-wise I switch back and forth between 8.25" and 8.375" and just stick with 144s; makes things easier for sure.

Thanks for the reasoning.
I’ve really just never got along with 149s, but I always switch back down to 139s, and then get bummed about the smaller set up. I also might skate a bit better with ‘overhang’? Where the board is slightly larger than the trucks. Never looks as cool as the huge trucks tho. Maybe that’s just a leftover nostalgic thought from watching footage from when the boards shrank faster than the trucks did....seems like there was a time people were running 7.6s ish on 8 trucks. Just looks cool to me. Aaaaaanyways, thanks for response.

I did 8.25"+149 thing forever (hate the way it looked tbh), then moved up to 8.3x"/149s, then to ACE 44s (I ran 8.3x/ACE/Spits longer than any combo to date and if I'm being totally honest with myself I probably skate better on that combo (but force myself to ride 8.25s as it's easier to toss around and with the advent of 'full shapes' I get the vibe of an 8.3 anyway).

8.37" with the 8.25" is really nice, I like the overhang; contrary to that, I hated 8.25" decks with 139/147s.

On the rare occasion I drop to an 8.18"/8.125 I'd still rock 144/148s. They really are the best middle ground for a lot of deck sizes.

riding the 6.1s on an 8.25 right now, first time ever skating something that wasn’t indy and i’m really enjoying them a lot and the more stable feel. Will take a little getting used to but after that they’re great.

Can you post a pic, I thought 6.1 were 8.75 right? I am running 5.8 which are 8.5 on an 8.25 and I don't think my mond would let me run 6.1 on 8.25.

Set up 5.8 highs on a board a couple months ago. Pretty much been my go-to ever since. The board’s an 8.5 Wuasi.

At one point I ran 159s on an 8.38, and I thought it was weird at first. Landing primo was a scary thought with that setup, but damn was it great for slappies/curbs/ledges. Eventually after snapping the deck they were on, realized that it was a bit much and wanted a lighter setup. They're now chilling till I feel the need to throw them on another setup again.

I basically did the same thing as you and swapped my 148ti's for 5.8ti's (thanks again). I've only done some flat with them so far because of life, but so far I like them, still got to get used to them. Coming from the Thunders, that probably won't take long.

To OP what size deck are you running or planning on running with the trucks? I'm personally a fan of my trucks being a little wider than my deck.

I've been riding 8.5s for a few months now and i'm really enjoying the extra stability especially for my big feet. I've been thinking about trying out some other shapes in the ranges between 8.38 and 8.8. I might have to try those 6.1s on an 8.5 though.

The only time I ever notice the over hang is when my board falls on its side and it’s slightly crooked but it feels awesome. I was running 159s on an 8.25 before this setup so it feels perfect to me.

Don't know how you do it. Looks like a tech deck to me. Wanting to size down from 8.5 to 8.25 without buying new trucks and just thinking about putting my 149 thunders on 8.25s is giving me heart palpitations.

149 shouldn't give you an issue with over hang.

I usually ride my trucks the exact width of the board, or a quarter inch wider max. The extra space and stability for certain grinds is nice and I never notice the axle sticking out below me.

On a side note, do you guys find the increased width helps with the turning for ventures? I remember getting a pair of ventures years ago around when DLX had acquired them and slightly changed the geometry if I remember right. I got the highs and loved the kingpin clearance and stability but was really disappointed with the turning. I was riding narrower trucks though so I wonder that didn't help.

So I'm setting up a new board I'm going for Venture 6.1s with bones soft bushings cause I'm a skinny guy and I like my trucks loose and 58mm spitfire classics, I'm sure I'm gonna need risers with these thinking about .25 risers
What I'm not sure about is how they'll ride on a 8.5 deck did anyone try 8.75 trucks on an 8.5 deck?

Haven't had personal experience with them but i've heard that 8.75 trucks on an 8.5 deck feel a bit more stable and it should still be manageable for flip tricks.

I’m confused by what you’re asking.  It depends on your deck size and what you skate... not to mention your personal preference.

Thunders and Venture Highs skate pretty similar at 8.25 and higher.

8.0 and smaller Thunders are closer to Venture lows.

You could do risers that big, be fun probably.
In my experience I can skate 56mm wheels with ventures and not get too much wheelbite, without risers. So maybe a 1/8” would do you.

Tinkered with some 5.8's today (on 8.6 14.25"), can only cruise because I'm hurt. They turn WAY better with a flat top washer, almost comparable with my 159's. The longer wheelbase has got me stoked and I'm loving that Venture 'magic' pop. Considering pulling the trigger on 6.1's but would I just be better off saving my money and running 2 extra inside washers? Is the turn any different?

Can’t speak to the turn on the 6.1s, haven’t had. I’d definitely try those 5.8s first.
