Going back to 1989, Seattle Pro Ramp contest. Originally Tony Hawk got 1st, Hosoi 2nd and Lance 3rd. Rewatch the finals and you be the judge!

Lance. He did cooler shit and went fakie. Went end to end the whole time too. Tony started strong but fucked up twice, should've been second place. Hosoi last - pulled off one good twirl and a manny but started way too slow.

hosoi's run was pretty sick to me. i always liked him better than hawk.
agree with chris miller though
-
I don’t care if he can McTwist over the moon, after his Nine Club episode, Hosoi is possibly my number 1 kook in skateboarding. Fuck he was a gronk. Nothing he did, or ever does again counts after watching that.
-
he's a kook no doubt but in the 80s it was really him and chris miller doing interesting stuff on vert to me

It looks so fun to skate like Hosoi but I never got the hype and he's wearing bike shorts.
On second thought, it looks more fun to skate like Lance and he's wearing normal gear.
Tony did two more rock & rolls than were necessary but he wasn't as robotic as he can be and did use the whole ramp, which was something people talked a lot about at the time.
1. Mountain
2. Hosoi
3. Hawk
-
Hosoi did catch the biggest airs, I guess that'd add some pooints.
-
Lance off the extension is sick
-
I'd marry lance, fuck hawk and kill hosoi
-
Hawk
Hosoi
Mountain
Hawk dropped in switch and proceeded to kill it and wtf was that stale fish to lipslide? lol
Hosoi and Lance, honestly tied Hosoiboi ran out of fucking tricks but had height and style, Lance had tricks and style...
-
Hawk doing some switch was pretty innovative but his run had some fuck ups.
Flawless victory by Hosoi 🏆
1. Hosoi
2. Hawk
3. Mountain
-
Still Hawk in first--doing real switch tricks on vert in a contest run at that time?
The other two I'd say a toss-up. I like Lance better, though, so I'd say him with the caveat of personal bias.

Hosoi's start was just as bad as Tony's axle stall fuck up. I'm with you on Lance.
I find these hard to judge nowadays as someone not from that era. Some of the shit they are doing that looks the sickest is actually like old at that time and not really special. Whereas now it would be like a throwback and is sick just for doing something old school.

The answer is Neil Blender.

Hosoi looks so good on a skateboard, but Hawk was so bloody progressive for the time.

Ah you know how it is, it's always rhetorical when OP asks if the judging was kooked. Context in time balanced with the obvious, "Holy shit, how'd Tony win?"
Also not from that era and I never watch competitions/point-based skating, but dissecting and nullifying past comps is good fun. People had little to no access to information/ability to tell the judges to fuck of then, but now the trophies can be taken away. Even if it's not physically, they can easily be rendered worthless by a couple of comments from random dickheads online. Nice move, Gideon.

I liked it all. I would say I was stoked for Hosoi and Hawk. Lance is rad as well but I don't think I've ever watched Hosoi skate.
-
The runs were too long, you could tell they were getting tired after a while. Better in the smaller comps in the early 80s with 45 sec runs.

Agreed. It seemed like 2 minute runs? 90 seconds?

1. Lance Mountain
2. Fred Gall
3. Birdman (The movie, duh)
-
Mickey Alba got 4th?? I'd be interested in seeing that run.
-
Hosoi had a cuppa tea during his first axle stall. Lance did an amazing frontside invert to fakie (but why? so hard, so ugly) and Hawk had a meltdown during some mid-combo axle stall coffee break. They all lose.
-
I think Hawk was doing a switch front nose pick? Pretty insane he was trying such hard shit....if you put them in today's standards....hosoi or Lance wins for sure but skating at the time was all about progression....
-
We can all agree that the good ol' days was the winner in this one

I went to that contest at the Key Arena in Seattle. It was actually called the GotchaGrind and I was such an excited young grom I thought everyone skated rad, but in retrospect all the tech stuff and switch Tony did was way ahead of what the other guys were doing, and I do think he deserved to win. I think at the time I actually did enjoy the Lance and Hosoi runs more, but I wasn't thinking about the more difficult tech tricks, just rooting for the guy that flew the highest.
-
Whoever had the most fun should win. So prob Lance.
-
Neil.
-
I have to admit my fondness for Lance is somewhat influenced by his closeness with Blender and Lucero so my judging probably skewed for that reason.
