Title: Griptape info
Post by: moonordie on November 11, 2020, 01:15:29 PM
Hello guys, I'm in need of griptape knowledge.
I'll have to money to invest and I feel like having something "mine". I already had the experience of owing a board co so I know I don't want to do that + market here in my country is flooded with up and coming brands so my best shot would be to have griptape.
I know as little as os780, or something like that, is the standard.
So far I've been doing some research on chinese manufacturers but of course ig anybody has info or tips about where to do it I would be extremely thankful since I trust better on a pal judgement.
I want some really grippy stuff, something would make Mob look like Jessup of you know what I mean.

Don't know much about manufacturing but unless you like throwing money away, I would advise against doing this. Most people will just get mob or jessup with the remaining people wanting some gimmicky graphic or cut out backed by huge pros. But go for it if you really want and update us.

Alright, good news and bad news:

Yes you will be able to get your griptape made fairly easily.  However the only way is to ingratiate yourself with the Chinese organized crime ring called “The Triad”.  Check it out:

My old head homie has it on his set up. He says you kinda get used to it but he is also incredibly embarrassed by it and skates alone more these days, and not because of covid.

Yes I have seen it.
Yes I had a "test skate" on a board that had it.
No I would never want to skate a board with it ever again.
No I would never recommend it to anyone.

But don't let my opinion cloud your judgement of it.

It is a funny old world isn't it?

Where skateboarders (or marketing people for skateboard brands) very regularly take the piss out of mainstream brands and images, but even more funny, or not funny at all, when other skateboarders take the piss out of skateboard brands.

Could go either way on this one.

I recall going into a local shop when I was on the road and the guy had "H A T E  C U N T" in the shake junt graphic.  Might have been mad at his ex or something but I didn't ask.

To be serious, there are a great number of online options, but I guess you would need to get samples, then work out what you want that the company can produce, minimum order requirements, etc.

A few interesting links, the main one being the BBS link, which would seem like a legit place to start at any rate, BBS being the #1 board supplier, with the link to their extra goods showing a diversity of product I never knew about.

https://bss2011.en.made-in-china.com/product-group/HeqxWVidbGhT/Griptape-catalog-1.html

http://skateboard-factory.com/skateboard-griptape-factory.html

I only include this one because it seems there are a lot of useful contacts, but wonder about quality / production:

https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/grip-tape.html

This would be my go to source, create an account and just start chatting with suppliers. The customer service reps on there are hungry for business and will gladly send samples (on your dollar though). Minimum order quantities are low (100 sheets for grip) but quality definitely is a step down from Jessup and Mob. I have a few sheets of the China stuff next to Jessup and Mob, the sheets are noticeably thinner and less gritty, not to the point of being unskate-able. I've seen at least 2 griptape companies pop up in my tiny country in Asia, many more in surrounding parts of Asia.

Edit: as a rule of thumb I would avoid overly cheap griptape like this, the kinds with the white backing paper. They are super thin and my shoe ripped a hole in it within 2 sessions, talk about opposite world.

Another option would be bearings - unless you're riding swiss or swiss ceramics, most bearings are already mass produced in China and are separated by product packaging and the ABEC numbers (which frankly don't mean much for actual skateboarding). Order quantities are manageable, all you need is a design to slap on your bearings.

Or bolts, costs pennies but sold at a healthy markup. Only problem is they aren't as "consumable" as grip or bearings.

I just re read it and although BBS is the woodshop, but that link is to BSS - not BBS so maybe proceed with caution.

Either way see how you go.

What does a company like Mob or Jessup do in yearly revenue? I mean, they're the top players in the grip game, and I can't imagine it's anything too crazy.. Shake Junt interesting enough per the Jenkem article may be ahead of Jessup in sales now but they also are pushing bolts, grinders, apparel, whatever else. Grip is also a thing where the brand means nothing once it's on the board - not recognizable, just has their go-to. What about a new skate tool? Patented design, new enhancements over other tools?

Is it stealing if the thing you are stealing is really lazy? Its like trying two cavemen fighting about who made the wheel.

I know Jessup sells their product for non-skateboard use like floors of ships and factories which probably contributes way more to revenue than skateboarders. They carry a full range of industrial adhesive tape and printable surfaces, plus they own the domain https://www.griptape.com/ which is probably worth some good money. Also explains why they don't bother making colored or graphic griptape.

Mob is made in Taiwan, QC and griptape is definitely higher quality than the regular Chinese stuff, they actually proudly indicate it on the back of their griptape.

I'm boring so black griptape or GTFO, no fancy color or graphics. But I'm not the target customer of Grizzly or Shake Junt, kids do love their colored griptape.

Jessup does do colors - I got some red on my old school board.
