Amazing song selection/edit. Skating obviously speaks for itself and the SOTY debate is over. Also enjoyed the hug between him and Elissa at the end.

he's officially dropped more quality footage this year than folks have in full pro careers. bump to bar cab over the fence was so fucking sick

Post by: Atiba Applebum on November 16, 2020, 09:12:54 AM
I like that SOTY rarely comes down to two similar styles (last time it was close was Daveed and Figgy).  Obviously the more gnarly of the two wins, but as an objective spectator, I like seeing the craziness of Mason, tech gnar of Miles, and purity of Tom Knox’s street skating all in the pot

Jesus fucking Christ. I clicked play expecting a bunch of leftover clips from the Nike part but I was wrong. I was slow to appreciate this dude, but he is legitimately one of the gnarliest in history.

Mason seriously put out 4 parts this year? That boy ain't right. Is Mack Scharff Max Schaaf's alias so people don't know he's become an editor now?

Jesus. He filmed enough footage to put out a whole part for his fucking wheel sponsor.

Post by: Lame_Nigga on November 16, 2020, 09:25:30 AM
There's nobody else that could even seriously be a contender for SOTY this year. 4 parts full of fast and powerhouse skating.

This was my least favorite of the 4 but that's not saying much since I still liked it

This man should be the definition of hard working. Back to back quality full lengths parts, amazing trick selection and style, goes fast and hard, how can someone skate so good

Long career ahead

Completely bonkers! This is what I want superlative skateboarding to look like. Hammers over hammers, but with tasteful trick selection, great spots, and more than anything, style, speed, and power.

That being said, I won’t celebrate any part in regard to filming, editing, and music for a while. Once again, Jacob Harris showed how it’s done and everything else just doesn’t do it for me right now.

Stole the Swirlies song from Kris Burkhardt's "HUM"

Yeah this ruined the part for me, instantly thought of Andrew Fienes part.

Pretty weird thrasher would release two videos in the  same year with the same song

You know how when you're daydreaming about skating, you think of insane tricks at random famous or well known spots that are theoretically possible, but no one's actually going to do? Mason's parts are almost 100% tricks like that.

This. This part was like 97% enders. Maybe the gnarliest single part ever (aside from Vov's dreamland part, but we're getting into a genre difference there). I was giddy during the hammer section.

After watching again I cannot fathom how you can produce a no filler part with this type of skating, let alone four in a year. Also the Fakie Flip over the bar, merely a side note in the context of this part, stood out to me. Has there ever been a Fakie Flip on a spot like this?

Unbelievable.

For all the progression skating has seen in the last few years, Mason seems like the only guy who really picked up what Westgate put down and ran with it - doing unthinkable shit at spots that are too massive to be spots.

Spitfire parts are like the new Transworld parts.

Still waiting on the vans piece, but i'd. say almost no question as of now Mason. Mason's year has been so much bigger than Berle/Gilby in all honesty, 4 bloody epic parts!?!

That was amazing sooo many crazy spots,  its gonna take a few watches to fully grasp.  First song i loved, that and other swirlies albums rule, second one surprised me from Mason, not Thrasher/Spitfire, still fit.

He'll get it cause he has the right sponsors (and his skating is unreal, not trying to discredit it), but the amount of footage only sometimes comes into play. Suciu dropped way more footage in 2012 than either Guy, Figgy and Daveed but Thrasher didn't even consider him. Hell, look at Suciu/Milton last year.

I can't remember the last time someone had a year like Mason's.  Maybe the year Ishod took it?

This kid is hustling the game right now.  Crazy work ethic.  I don't think it's been mentioned, but I really liked the half cab back smith and the massive street gap heel flip.

Suciu had a couple of years like this (2012, 2013, and 2019) and the year Wes took it he dropped like 3 heavy parts.  I know people like to think Kyle Walker won it off one trick, but he also had a crazy amount of footage drop that year.

What else needs to be said? Textbook SOTY. That was a fucked up part. The Nike part was so well put together but this one is just so raw and beast and honestly showcases Mason's skating better.

Standout Tricks: halfcab flip bump to bar, boardslide to boardslide, tre flip over rail the hard way, that gap to blunt with the kink in the end and the massive 180 to fakie 5-0 on the big rail Berle nosegrind nollie-flipped

I don't think there's ever been a part that's so obviously deserving of SOTY status on it's own.

Even in today's era of constant amazing skateboarding saturation, I said 'woah' aloud multiple times. (For reference, no 'woah's were uttered during Primitive's new video).

Insane stuff.

Def enjoyed the music in this better than the Nike part. I love Roxy, but this part definitely matched his style better. Reminded me of his Former part.

So many tricks to talk about, but there's something about how he catches his varial heels and hardflips that really stands out.

It all started with that Fakie kickflip at Tampa Pro....

Regarding the amount of footage...I think he's just that good and is able to stock footage everytime he goes out to skate.

There is no way he hasn't seen the HUM video considering Ethan Loy is in it, so I find that kind of suspect.

His skating is undeniable, and he seems to be progressing with trick selection.

15+ filmers though! Usually when there is that many different people involved it can make the part seem disjointed, but not here.

After watching again I cannot fathom how you can produce a no filler part with this type of skating, let alone four in a year. Also the Fakie Flip over the bar, merely a side note in the context of this part, stood out to me. Has there ever been a Fakie Flip on a spot like this?
[close]
only other fakie flip over a bump to bar that i'm aware of was done by brad cromer
[close]

Where did he do this? I was trying to think of another fakie flip over a bump to bar but was blanking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNg8uZi2saY

Second to last trick at about the 4:20 mark (hehe). I forgot how good this part was with the Modest Mouse song and the phone call intro with Huf. And as far as I know, this is the only other fakie flip over a bump to bar ever done.

When I saw this thread I first thought it was a bump of one of his parts from earlier this year... no way he could put out another one. Just crazy, he just seems to be all in all the time.

On the first watch the half cab heel the wrong way over the rail stood out in this one, that's a difficult one to make look that good. And wallie 180 to switch 50 down a handrail really should be impossible.

before posting this, i legitimately checked to make sure it wasn’t a thrasher reupload of something he had done earlier this year and then watched. i still kind of can’t believe he’s done this much. just on footage we’ve seen alone, he has to average a clip every like day and a half

I get why for simplicity reasons people are comparing Mason to Milton (and Tom to Suciu), but I feel their skating is way different. Mason reminds me way more of Westgate/Donny Barley type of skating.

Either way, if Mason gets SOTY he clearly deserved it, and same can be said for Tom. I'll probably re-watch Tom's Atlantic Drift part more than any part Mason put out this year, but Mason's footage this year has been insane.

Bear with me, but it's like comparing watching porn to falling in love. Mason is amazing, actually inhuman it's exhilerating but it's not really relatable and I don't care if I ever see it again.

Not only will I watch Tom's part over and over, but it's changed how I skate and the tricks I think about on a day to day. I'm glad that part is in my life.

i'd even say he worked not until 5 or 6, but at least until 7. probably gets up at 5, too.

Was thinking about it and it'd be really kind of nice for Mason to win SOTY the same year Huf passed. Not saying they were BFFs but for a skater who rides for Real and Huf clothing (I think he's on huf clothes) who skates with such power and speed like Huf did it'd be a fitting tribute.

I had the same thought the other day. Whilst Mason's skating speaks for itself and he has earnt it on that alone, I think the comparison would sway Thrasher
