How can you guys constantly shit on Alex Olson and how his skating “declined” from kid to adult - but still worship Heath Kirchart???? Give the dude a break maybe he just didn’t give a fuck anymore either?
-
I usually shit on a toilet, but i would be keen to shit on this Alex Olson you're on about, especially if it has a bidet function, for those times i'm not clean snappin' 4's
-
AO is a saint. Alex, if youre listening... let's hangout.

hi Alex

Alex is cool

Well for starters.... Name one memorable part. And how dare you even compare the two in any way shape, form, or fashion. AO will never be has handsome or memorable as KH. Even graphic wise. lol

will this be the new 917 video's intro? this thread's replies like a powerpoint slideshow with sick ass effects such as soft fade, morphs, reveals, checkerboard....
-
In all seriousness he's the perfect skateboarder. Pop, style, great trick selection and taste. A playfulness brimming with anger and attitude. His unwillingness to play the game but ability to throw down as well as anyone out there. Every clip you see is savory.
He's no Heath because Heath was like the ultimate blue collar skater who earned his pension of respect, but he holds his own.
-
i liked that back 3 kickflip in the yellow nikes in that paris clip 3 years ago. or was it a front 3 kickflip? idk shit looked cool

AO is maybe my favorite skater ever and has been since a kid
no he is not Heath Kirchart, very different styles, no need to compare the two
-
Don't hate AO, just thinking he's wasting a big opportunity with 917. You can't really blame FA for stealing your riders when you sit on your promising company doing nothing. They started off strong but Alex seems pretty over it these days.

Olex Alson.

Waiting for some inspiration I guess, don’t force the magic

For being a "son of art" and a "child prodigy" has actually done a lot better than expected.
Look at Evan Hernandez for example.
Also, take his father as role model and Alex is doing very good.
I think he has just no need to push it because he didn't have to make it, he was born right into the industry, was linked with the best companies at the time, to begin with and now has figured out he doesn't wanna go that extra mile.
Good for him.
-

I find this kinda frustrating. I’ve gotten a few Bianca things over the years and the 917 videos are some of my favorites yet most the 917 product seems so lazy. And then the way Cyrus describes AO’s stewardship of the company in his pals interview was just comical. But perhaps that’s part of the charm of small businesses run by colorful characters how thoroughly unlike big corporations they are.
-
Olson’s skating and art direction are both pretty cool imo, but he also seems like a real airhead. I heard some interview where he seemed to imply that Dylan would still be alive if he had done more yoga. Anyway I kinda like watching him get frustrated by people leaving 917, it’s funny, like a cartoon character who keeps running into walls but never learns his lesson. The sound system graphic he did for 917 last season was sick as hell too, bu pt I only ever saw it in an Everslick model wtf. Just adds to the mystique of AO’s extremely funny combo of super sick and slightly lame.

Yeah I feel like skating is set up right now to eat up 917 too. It just need to produce more for the industry to eat up.

Heath isn't as pretentious and hasn't clung on to skateboarding. He's moved on to bigger and better things

im sure margins are small, and he doesnt want to invest in help that would actually build the brand. hes probably busy as hell trying to make graphics, get the teams approval on shit, sell shit etc
-
I rate Alex massively. Him and Heath are chalk and cheese... so they've both worn all white, now let's compare..?
Like many of you guys I wish 917 was flourishing a lot more with riders etc. and I'm sure Alex would love to turn all of them pro. But surely it's a money thing though? I just don't think small board companies are cut out for loads of pros, especially if they aren't selling loads of boards.
Both FA and Polar are hugely success because of soft goods sales, 917's soft goods aren't that great because Bianca Chandon exists which basically its own thing. So essientially if you like fairly nice clothes and you're into 917, you'll probably buy BC, which probably isn't benefitting any of the 917 riders. - Not saying it's a bad thing, BC came first after all but I just think it's a lil bit of a conundrum.
-
I thought AO was generally admired but folks just groused about how he dropped off as a (tremendously enjoyable) skater and company owner. Even then, it's easy to cut him some slack since Dill poached half of 917, which had to suck for him. Biggest issue I could see having with him now is how little he seems to be doing for Cyrus and Max, who are fucking treasures. But even then those guys are doing a great job staying relevant on their own, so what's even the harm?
I wish AO the best, even if he's over skateboarding, and I bet most people here probably feel the same way. That said, I bet he gets a second wind here before long and we might even see how the yoga and organic produce have been treating him.
-
this guy is actually comparing Olson's career Heath's .. Damn
-
Took me the longest time to admit that he’s one my favorite skaters ever.
-
I've always enjoyed everything Chalex has put out post Craig, and feel it's a a good amount of output (not the last year .5 or so). His companies aren't for me product wise.
Alex is a favorite, Heath is the favorite.

how dare you compare Alex Olson to Keith Hirchart
-
I think that the majority of people do really like him but find it incredibly frustrating when its clear that he has a lot of leftover potential.
And if we're entertaining this weird comparison; Heath quit having peaked yet Alex seemed to give up rather than leave with his integrity.
-
i don’t get the heath comparison. i feel like AO is more comparable to Rickk. both have some prime years lost to business and outside interest
-
Always liked AO. Even more so since he posted the FA talent scout business card.
-
AO is legend status to me, one of my all time favorite styles and bag of tricks.
The Fully flared part was my favorite , really dont understand the hate.
Maybe 917 isn't the most cohesive but I appreciate their lack of manifest destiny and corporate cancerous growth

He even failed by running into a tree. So you are absolutely right.

Slightly off-topic, but I Alex was hanging out in Copenhagen after the contest for some weeks two years ago, and it surprised me how small he is. He could be a jockey!
Love Alex - he's like Stevie Williams, hsu, puleo, and tyshawn in that he just looks great on a skateboard. He doesn't have to do gnarly stuff to get me stoked!
-
Even if you hate on AO, you have to agree he has the best style when he’s skating at his best.
Swoosh will be amazing 10 or 20 years from now, that ending line has to be my favorite of all time. His Pretty Sweet part was also pretty sweet.
-
Swoosh...something something...Bobby Worrest...something something...
-
Gonna say it, if you don't like it send it on back.... but AO was the hottest member of Team Handsome.

-
He is doing good, dropping his music, the team is very great and diverse ,917 videos are cool, the music is on point and some of the graphics too
Let this man chill and handle his business as he wants
But yeah I wish they drop more short edits of footage
And btw Cyrus part in 917 2 is sooo sick damn I can’t hate

I'm 6'1" and once helped Kerry Getz at the counter of a bagel store I worked at across the street from Nocturnal and was shocked at how short he was. Also shocked that he wasn't screaming and dismantling the counter.
-
Kerry Getz screamed his way through his career. I could definitely see him freaking out about a mistake on his bagel.
The small skater thing is pretty true. That kinda stuff is just easier when your shorter. I’m 6’4” which I used as an excuse to myself as to why I suck at skating. It also makes me respect big bois like BA for looking good on a board. Hajalte looks like a big boo too.

I've seen others and noted that the average height is pretty short, but AO caught me off guard. I think the whole 'team handsome' thing made me assume he was tall like Dylan. The power of marketing...
Anyway I'm sure AO can pull hotties like nobody's business, so my dismissive remarks are 100% coping mechanism, I'm not ashamed to admit it

Short = low center of gravity = good balance = good at skateboarding.
It's crazy how surprised people still get in 2020 that pro skateboarders are tiny.

Rick Howard on the other hand...
A lot of these guys just look tall compared to the average size of skateboarders they appear alongside in videos.
Which, as we've just said, isn't very tall at all.
Well, that's my theory anyway.
There's only a handful or big time pros that are actually 6ft, let alone 6'3 or 6'4. Which, to my mind, is when you fully hit big man status.
Tinder is right. 6ft is average.

Austyn is 5’9, it’s interesting how most slappers try to underestimate pros height.
-
BA is 6'4" sez so in his 9 Club stop and chat
The reason people on Tinder be hung up on 6 foot is that it's the last detail you disclose if you're not so tall. For some, being taller than a partner is a deal breaker so they ask up front before doing the whole thing only to find out there's a disqualifying detail.

I've seen others and noted that the average height is pretty short, but AO caught me off guard. I think the whole 'team handsome' thing made me assume he was tall like Dylan. The power of marketing...
Anyway I'm sure AO can pull hotties like nobody's business, so my dismissive remarks are 100% coping mechanism, I'm not ashamed to admit it
he's taller?

Love Alex Olson’s skating but this pic always weirded me out. He look like he built like a soccer mom with that dump truck he packin

Yeah, but he actually isn't.
He's tall.
plus the banana hands

Can someone explain to me why Austyn Gillette is always brought up in this conversation? dude looks like a rat wearing our legacy suit pants and a tucked in wife beater. If that's all it takes call me Fabio.
Amazing skateboarder and nice guy though.

I'm 188cm (basically 6'2), I met Rick Howard two years ago and he seemed taller than me.

That's what I mean, he was with the right crew at the right time and was absorbed essentially.
Again, he's cute, but he's no AO or Dylan.

Post a pic of yourself and I'll let you know where you stand ;)

By page 10 I’m sure we’ll be pondering the size of Team Handsome’s wiener wallets.

Still strange that there are two Steve Olsons. Also strange that Shorty's Steve Olson has same birthday as Tony Hawk

Alex Olson was a huge part of breaking homophobia in the skate industry and which paved the way for skateboarding to be as inclusive as it is today.
-
I don't care what BA says, he's not fucking 6'4.
Ayy! My dude, new signature.

Every queer person in brasil looks like lucas puig now.
-
As a queer skater, I don't see AO as being part of the foundation of acceptance (not that he was anti). Outside of the maybe BA and Leo, I think the blending of cultures came from the general world culture at large rather than anything within skating.
-
Alex Olson has been profiting off of pretending he is queer for a few years now. Makes me wonder why nobody who is actually down has called him out. Selling $200 Bianca Chandon “fire island” tshirts I always thought shit was weird but of course nobody is gonna call him out bc he’s good at sk8n

i think a lot of the Fire Island and Paradise Garage stuff had profits that were donated to LGBTQ non-profits.
not saying i think his obsession with selling queer culture as a straight man is justified but at least he gave back in some way.

Still a big fan of his old theory on how Leo Valls was in fact Vivien Feil, just under a different name for the market overseas.

Yes, not sure if publicly (although I think he might have referred to it in old ass TOA comments) but I can confirm that was his theory for a bit. All because he literally had never seen both in the same room at the same time. Apparently the name Vivien is too European to be marketable regardless of how good of a switch back tail.

I'll forgive Alex for appropriating LGBTQ vibes if he takes me out for a nice vegan dinner and holds my hand in public.

Evan Hernandez is an example of someone who did extremely well for himself after he left skateboarding, it isn't like he piled out like Jereme Rogers or something....
