We interview skateboarding's lovable trend-setter about the tricks he does and the clothes he wears.
Hope you enjoy!

Nollie heels done in flannel - 100%, that was pretty sick. This made me laugh a lot for some reason...
You like living there?
Ummmm, I mean not necessarily. My whole thing is just that like, I'm just kinda happy to be alive. Life is good. I guess you could complain about really anything but you gotta kind of just fuckin' deal with what the circumstances are in front of you, you know? That's kinda where I'm at with it all, so.. Fuck it. Everythings gonna suck if you just fuckin, you know, if you make it suck, so.. I’m just tryin' to fuckin, be alright with it you know.
That is some clean advice.
Hell yeah dog.

what do you use for visualization and analysis? I work in statistics and ML, it would be cool (with enough data) to take past parts and predict a new part.
-
You got switch tres though?
Yeah I can do it switch, I mean I can do it regular like in a game of skate or whatever but I would never attempt to film one. I can’t do impossibles. Or hardflips. Or back smiths. Or frontside airs. It sucks because they are all 'style' tricks and when I try or do them they look gross so I don’t do 'em ahaha.
Damn, looks like we have the same nemesis tricks almost. I can switch and nollie tre, but my regular tres suck so bad I don't even do them unless I really have to. Hardflips and back smiths are also tricks I never grasped. Impossibles meh, mine look like 360 shuvs that barely wrap. That was a fun read.

Our typical stack is python for all the data stuff, and vanilla html/css/js for the front end (eg https://github.com/jwilber/4PLY/tree/master/andrewallen). I kept the front end as simple as possible to allow for ease of collaboration.
Visualization mostly use JavaScript- all the interactives are custom charts we implement ourselves with js + d3. Static charts are created w illustrator ( by slap resident & 4ply co-editor @warmupzone).
I’ve tried to stray from ml stuff (machine learning for those unfamiliar) to make the articles more accessible, with the exception of the filmer article, where I adapt some light embedding techniques: http://4plymag.com/filmers/
If you have any cool ideas reach out w a pitch! Thanks for the interest :)

That was fun. Thanks! You should totally try to get a Worrest one together. That would be sick.
-
Andrew Allen's darkslide game is criminally underrated, glad this shed light on it
-
As a stats nerd, I love the concept. AA is a himbo.
-

would love an accurate number on the number of full-parts he's had over the years. it would be amazing if you were able to track his tricks from appearances in various Nike SB and Wilson edits as well. it'd take some significant effort/time, but man, what a contribution!
-
these are always so cool to read and dig into. Great work!
-
Pairing these with interviews was a smart direction.
-
You could avoid the illustrator work with Seaborn or GGplot for sure. As for ideas most of my work is on the ML and stats front, so it likely would be sorta uninteresting line/trick/part predictor type stuff
-
Pairing these with interviews was a smart direction.
Agreed, this was top notch. Reading the stats and the response from the interviewee makes for a more interesting and insightful read than the usual tired questions and same-same answers that they've probably given a hundred times. Great work, looking forward to the next one
-
Yeah dude, these are great. It was short and sweet, but to the point. Would love a Bobby Worrest one.
Also this cracked me up.

Rad, thank you so much for the reading.
-
Great read! Love AA!
-
As usual, highly enjoyable stuff.

From one stat nerd to another, salute.

even though its a written article, the comedic timing was great.
-
Great read. I hope you can continue this interview style. As said above, it’s a fresh take on skate interviews.
First time on the site in general but will be adding it to my bookmarks. Such a cool idea. Excited to see where it goes in the future.
You should do one on Greco, but instead of tricks it should be fits. Or maybe on JRog and break down some of his finest whispers.
-
I always have time for AA.
Thanks for the post.
-
loved it! only advice/what i want is to add a button that bring you back to the top

These are a treat for me.
Great read & (again) a super fun basis for an interview.
I loved this tidbit from the intro, too. “With some of the most advanced technology known to man, and some of the most advanced men known to technology...”
Good work, PALS.
-
Great interview and stats! Andrew Allen is the complete opposite answer to that "bad trick selection"-topic.
-
Very good indeed, this actually makes me wanna read skaters interview instead of the classic bro catch up.
-
Amazing read. Would love a bobby interview.
-
I cannot fathom having a switch tre but not a regular one.
I can fathom not doing pressure flips.
-
As usual, highly enjoyable stuff.
-
I did not realize AA did that many backside bigspins. Good shit.
-
good shit, indeed
-
also, kudos on including the quintessential panda roll gif

Shoutout switch bigboy
-
now that i think about it.. i've maybe never seen andrew allen not wearing flannel
-
Loved the interview and the format. Can’t wait to read the Fred fall interview. As others stated a Bobby interview would be cool too.
