IG is one of the worst things to ever happen to skateboarding. For every page that posts something worthwhile, there's 10 pages of parents forcing their infants down a megaramp or a 14 year old in Korn pants beaming the fuck out of the camera after doing a crook and landing cross legged. i feel this way about Sky Brown and cringe every time i look at her instagram.  Shes very talented and obviously enjoys skateboarding, but you can just tell her parents are pushing her and her brother to be viral internet sensations.  so much weird marketing shit for such a little kid.  it reminds me of that balloon boy from several years back and its gross.

Fucked.

These "parent run account" instagram profiles are pedophile community centers. I have a really fucking hard time believing these parents don't know better than that.

Especially when the parents constantly infantilize their captions and the same fucking set of creeps come around to comment shit like "Wow you're getting so big! Keep it up!" - that shit is a fucking game for perverts. They get off by grooming kids from afar. And all these "skate coach" parents are encouraging that shit.

And for what? Just for some fucking jaded shitty dad to get vicarious fulfillment?

I really don't care for the counterargument that the kids appear to be having fun. That's such a irrelevant, crap rebuttal - and like really? What's the use of trying to defend the endangerment & exploitation of a fucking KID for internet attention?

Idk this might be a kneejerk reaction, maybe it's not ALL this bad. I just want someone to tell me they also see this shit as clearly as I do. Cause aside from the fact that I'm fucking crazy, this shit makes me feel insane.

My daughter is the exact same age. she wants to do a lot of unsafe shit that im sure is hella fun. every fucking day. she never wants to wear a helmet on a bike or anything. wants to just run out into the road. it is up to you as the dad to be like yo this is too far man. we all make mistakes he even acknowledges in the post that he was hesitant about putting it up cause he knows how fucked up it was.

I want my daughter to rip at skating probably as badly as that guy does but i am not that selfish man. i know theres stuff i could do to like min/max the time we have to improve on skating but i just dont look at it like that. i would rather she just sit down on the board, put her dolls up on it, w/e and play with it and just enjoy it for what it is. she has fun watching little kids skate just push around and having fun. she has no idea about what tricks are or anything... like shes seen me skate or whatever but it sjust too much of a jump from what she thinks is possible for her to do in her mind.

i dont think I will show my daughter this video. i think it would freak her the fuck out seeing the kid ragdoll like that and porbably put her off skating.

I would assume some of these parents who push there kids to be famous via social media have nine to fives and stuff. And I would assume some co-workers would follow or at least be aware of their kids. I don’t think I could look at Bill the same if he spent his weekends pushing his kids down halfpipes. Shit is wack.

Totally. A parent's job is to keep their kids safe, not maximize their extreme sports potential. 3/4 of the time I spend at the at the skatepark with my daughter is riding on our butts with stuffed animals on our laps. Fuck sports.

I'm pretty sure I've seen actual Korn pants before, like with a patch on the back pocket. It was in the mid 2000's when the scene in my hometown died for a while and the only skaters left were a bunch of crust punk kids. One of them was doing flatground hand flips with an early grab, monkey style, in underground parking garages reeking of piss, so Korn in fabric form was probably protruding out of his ass.

I also know one dude who skated for years in the same oversized Muse hoodie. Never a session without it unless it was in the wash - and it very rarely was in the wash.

If you gonna push your kid to do stuff, push em to do something thats not dangerous AND pays well, like golf or tennis or computer programming.

I mean, if they like skatebaording, cool, build em a small mini ramp and show them nothing but Tom Penny miniramp clips maybe.

didnt think so.

there's a 5 year old kid nearby where i live that absolutely rips, i think he could do that roll in, but i'm pretty sure his dad would stop him. i haven't seen him skate 18 foot, but i've seen him skate 10 foot of his own choosing -  his dad never had anything to do with skateboarding and got the little dude a skateboard because he asked for one. he has taught himself and gone to some little group skate lessons, but has this incredible ability to just take skateboarding in - he very clearly just gets it. little dude is really happy, but really quiet, like, has no ego, just an awesome smile when he does tricks. it's just fun to him, he doesn't have instagram and he doesn't have sponsors - maybe the local shop gives him a discount and stickers. i imagine he'll be a phenomenal skater. i've never seen anything like it and i imagine it's very rare.

Yeah pretty bad judgement I guess... Reminds me of a time when I witnessed a Dad egging his 9/10 yo kid on to drop on this pure rust bucket of a 10 foot ramp. The kid stood up there for ages literally shaking while his dad called him a wimp. Eventually the dad said if he did it he'd let him have a beer when they got home and the kid dropped in straight after.

Strange dynamic for sure, we were all perplexed.

said rusty ramp:

what a swell father. gifting daddy issues, skatepark locations, and his daughters age fully displayed for the internet to see.

take away the skateboard and it looks like hes pimping out his daughter. keep the skateboard in the picture and hes getting his 5 year old daughter "sponsors"

nothing about this shit seems innocent or naive

i skated pretty hard (on a much lesser level) at this age but...
1. i skated street
2. i wanted to skate big stuff (big stuff at that age was like a 5 stair)
2. there was no instagram
3. i was pretty tall for a 5 year old
4. my dad didnt know a lot of the stuff i was doing

looking back on it i can understand why something like this is fucked. while i'm all down for somebody naturally starting young, the skate coach thing is incredibly gross and exploitative. this makes me sick tbh. I have some lasting back issues for life because of the stuff i did young, and that was nothing compared to this. i really hope this young girl can find some safety and a life of her own.

Skate dads are the fucking worst. Why force your kid to do something they probably don’t even have any interest in doing? Just let your kid find what they’re into for themselves and let them find their own hobbies and passions instead of trying to force yours on them.

I remember being like 13 going to an indoor skatepark in a bigger city for the first time and encountering my first 'skate dad' there, it shocked me how the dude spent the whole afternoon filming his six-year-old on his little camcorder and forcing him to try and boardslide some dumb ledge over and over; the kid clearly wasn't into it, the dad was coaching him on shit he himself had no idea about, eventually the kid ate shit and broke down in tears before the dad just carried him out of the park while yelling at him.

This current behavior is barely an evolution of that, the same dumb fucks just have access to an audience now, being a shitty parent who never grew up themselves is apparently relatable to many weird social media profiles and some companies are drawn to any big number like flies with no consideration for the overall message they send, what else is new.

Sometimes I wonder what exactly it is that humans wait for before they start thinking. Like parents at skateparks 'watching' their kids on scooters get dangerously close to bad collisions with skaters twice their size and speed for hours with no problem, really just playing on their smartphone in the meantime and only waiting for the moment the very damage that they could have prevented is actually done to react. Why the need for some eventual tragedy blowing up Hollywood style before those thousands of people open their eyes on what it is that they're actually doing? The next step is placing your newborn infant in the middle of the freeway, filming the next minute with a drone and then calling it a speedrun on YouTube, humanity right now is pretty fucking insane.

Won't be impressed until an egg that was fertilized 5 seconds ago does a 20 ft backside air on the mega

Are you fucking nuts?! I'm not waiting that long for my kid to bloom. Soon as that sperm starts burrowing into the egg, I'm having him or her march his or her ass up to the top of the nearest halfpipe. "Get up there and drop in, you egg with a wiggly sperm tail, or you get no dinner tonight."

IG is one of the worst things to ever happen to skateboarding. For every page that posts something worthwhile, there's 10 pages of parents forcing their infants down a megaramp or a 14 year old in Korn pants beaming the fuck out of the camera after doing a crook and landing cross legged. IG should be used for Russian dash cam footage, pictures of gigantic asses, and pictures of cookie dough ONLY.

this.

My question is do any of these kid/parent combos exist without the social media presence?

Is any parent allowing their 5 year old to do this undocumented and NOT for clout?

didnt think so.

I saw this last year. Dad was egging on/ talking shit to his less than 10 year old son trying to make him drop in. He was saying shit like, "well he can do it" pointing to a kid younger than the kid was. The guy was asking me for tips and I told him if he's not comfortable not to try it yet, he's probably going to lean back and eat shit. He asked me, "what do you know?" To which i responded, "how to drop in" and "if you think it's so easy why don't you try it and show him how?" Dude was wearing sandels and awkwardly pushed around trying to bring himself to do it for a while before he himself didn't try it either.

It's sad that parents are ruining skateboarding for their kids these days. People used to start skating to get away from shit like that.

I was at a park around 2003-2005 and there was this 7 year old kid who was pretty decent. Could pump the ramps, generate speed. Skating. He dad stood in the middle of the park about 20 feet away from a 6 ft quarter pipe. This guy was grabbing his sons arms as he skated by and whipping him so he could get air because he couldn’t get the speed to het to the top on his own. Fucking dumbest shit I ever saw.

As a parent I just follow my kids around and let them show me what they want to do. My son doesn’t want to skate cause he doesn’t want to get hurt. I could care less. Let him find his own thing. Some parents yell at their kids at baseball or soccer if they aren’t ‘trying hard’ whatever the fuck that means. My son said to me that baseball was no fun cause the coaches wouldn’t stop instructing them. He’s 8. So, he stopped going and I say whatever.

Adults can really take over their kids activity and I think that is lame. Helicopter parents are the worst. How can a child develop a sense of self if the parent is all up in their biz?

It's crazy that some parents are like this. I think that was a perfect way of dealing with that shitty dad! If every parent with a young skateboarder also skated alongside them, they'd probably be more mindful of what tricks and terrain is age appropriate having gone through the progression themselves.
