Downhill longboarding. Not the big contest stuff per day, but the gnarly bike-path and mountain-pass bombing shit. Illegal races, pink slip races, 4km push races while drinking a 6-pack.  Fucking gnar.

This series is a pretty good intro the the crew I used to hang a bit with.

black metal is my favorite , which is ironic cause the black metal quote-unquote Scene is the ..... uhhh ..... WORST lol

that makes it even more special , being a pariah in a scene of so-called pariahs who ended up forming a shitty clique

you feel a whole world closer to the music because of it

In my younger days definitely hardcore punk, still an to a degree but no where near what it was. I guess I’d say anarchism and workers organizations, but even that sort of pales in comparison to my involvement in skating.

I bought a volkswagen GTI in 2019, which requires a dive into the subculture of maintaining and modifying them. Not super into the mods yet but I'm headed that direction...

Music and composition writing, I've had music and writing music drilled in my head since I was a kid.

I've written a a few pieces on harpsichord and piano before I was 16, whenever I moved out I didn't do that for a long time.

Whenever I'm in a punk or black metal Doom band it tends to go to otherworldly places. Kinda like wolves in the throne room weirdness.  Sadly though as soon as I dropped my friends from sobriety I'd rather play music on my own again.

I like goth kits call me corny whatever I love the look of a dapper black on black look maybe a red or purple here and there.  If you're thinking Bam's look close but no top hat's and no victorian era or steam punk trash. I think it's too extra.

Long distance backpacking
80's toyota 22r pickups/4runners
Botany
Stand up comedy (when Corona is done)
COFFEE

...but as @Freelancevagrant said, skateboarding is the top dawg. Although now that I think about it, I skate about 4 days a week, but I drink coffee every fucking day. So maybe I am more of a coffee head than a skate head by volume?

This thread has me questioning my morals!

Assuming you like “skateboard culture.”  I find it exhausting to keep up with and fairly shallow.  Pass.  I’d rather tidy up my house or read a book than immerse myself in any culture.  So, nerds?

I follow basketball and mma pretty heavily. Watch almost every clippers game i can, and basketball fandom as a whole is pretty cool. Not a lot of toxicity. Mma has a terrible subculture of Meathead casuals but if you find someone pretty knowledgeable then it can be fun.

Also my gf is heavily heavily into the vintage clothes scene, she does her hair in the 50s style, wears rollers to bed, collects vintage dresses and we have a bunch of mid century modern furniture. As a result, I've built up a tidy little collection of vintage mens clothes so she's not flexing on me and so we can go to events together. Just bought a coral Ricky jacket yesterday that I'm super hyped on

I have a lot of interests, but when I think “subculture” I think of scenes and community. Outside of skateboarding my face is not as familiar  in other spaces.

I guess I’m a well known guy in my local design community and creative class bs, but that’s so tied to work.

Punk rock became bigger than skating for me in my 20’s. Playing in bands and just being wherever the other heads were when we weren’t playing. I’ve lost touch with a lot of that crew in middle age. Kids are expensive and I can’t party like that anymore.

Was heavily into scooters for a while too because of the skinhead overlap. Proffered Vespa to Lambretta, but that was probably because I never had the cash when one popped up. Had a Stella when they came out and fucking LOVED having a bike that actually ran well on a regular basis even if it did look like a P-Series. I was a shitty mechanic even on something that simple. If I ever got a new scooter I’d either spring for an overpriced remodel or another Stella. But those days are in the rearview. I don’t have time to ride around aimlessly all weekend anymore.

I love 90s hip hop and RnB. Im a pretty good producer.

I have hundreds of beats and thousands of samples that will likely never get used. I traded loops for drugs in the 00s.

It was impossible for me to hip hop. Similar to skating no queers allowed unless you're deep closet

Same as you OP, I find ultras culture fascinating. Even a couple of small tight crews exist stateside that have Euro ex-pats in their ranks teaching the ways to 'Murricans, although it will never really catch on here as it has in Europe.

Rave, not the average US EDM definition. But euro/uk. Soundsystem. I like good club nights strictly for music heads. Techno/Jungle/dnb/house and all connected genres.

I grew up being heavily into old punk like GBH, Crucifix, Discharge etc.

Going to start contemporary dance classes this year.
Also active in harm reduction/psychedelics communities.

I think I'm sort of in this camp. I actually really like watching BangerTV on you tube. Just a bunch of Canadian heavy metal nerds that can break it down and evaluate the music in a way that I could never truly appreciate.

Also, prehospital and emergency medicine. I know that's probably super niche for this arena.

Really into mountain biking and just cycling in general, going on shop rides and stuff like that is super fun.  I live in the Midwest so when I say mountain biking it’s more single speeds, fat bikes, and steel hard tails and stuff, it’s a lot more blue collar and way less broey/yuppie than people on 6k full suspension bikes.

It’s really fun to get a crew of people together and go camp/drink/trip and ride for the weekend in some backwoods area of the country, go to country bars, be hungover, and ride a bunch.

Also mountain biking is fun cause people of a variety of fitness levels can do it together, everyone just rides at their own pace and just take a quick break and reconvene  when ever there’s a trail intersection or what ever.

No heart rate monitors, no Lycra, no worries

Traveling was definitely worth mentioning I did that for my 20’s and 30’s seen and met a bunch of friends and people some good some bad, I think it’s broadened my perspective and greater appreciation for this country and Europe.

Northwestern Canada to Oregon are my favorite places in the state’s pretty much anything in euro is rad except Glasgow I fucking hate that place.

Long story short I got slashed by some football hooligans for drinking in “their park” might’ve been an asshole I assume but it didn’t have to go that route.

I'm deep into bicycles- collecting, assembly, wheelbuilding, hanging with welders and painters to get my bikes built exactly how I want them. Track bikes, road bikes, randonneur, mountain bikes, I love it all and will dive into those subcultures hard. My day job is in the industry.

Surfing/ocean life too, though I feel like an outsider. I particularly like the new trend of performance soft boards and bodysurfing.

My life is just a revolving obsession with skateboarding, bikes, and surfing that goes in monthly waves. MY brain hasn't evolved since I was 13 apparently.

Been deeply obsessed with surfing too since I started a couple years ago.  Having this brutal inner conflict with myself lately because I’m ready for my second board, but a proper shaped glass board is out of my budget/comfort zone (nothing used available near me), and even though a Torq or similar pop-out makes the most sense, I don’t want to be seen as the kook that I am.

I got really into cycle racing a couple years ago before I started my masters. Living in NYC, it was almost perfect because you could race about 3 times in a week without ever needing a car. You definitely had to dig deep in the subculture to find people who didn't use cycling as an excuse to show off all the gear they could afford.

The foamies are sick but you need a good barreling wave for a beater as well as dece fitness to paddle hard enough. Heaps easier catching waves on a big fibreglass board mini mal or fish type deal. Cause you get better the more waves you get, you wanna just get out there and smash as many waves as you can

It feels unreal on a wave too, I mean the feeling of the fibreglass moving over the water. Sometimes you can come up on good second hand ones just google what to look for, I mean like red flags and shit, you can definitely do little repairs yourself

On crowded days if you’re not super comfortable in the lineup you can just sit outside of everyone and pick off scraps and still be learning and having fun...that’s not gonna happen so much on a beater or 54 spesh. Beater with fins out is unreal skimboard hey

Most subcultures are cool in their ways. As a kid you get all judgemental and shit about others but at the end of the day a person without a hobby is a much to be pitied individual

I don’t really know anyone that’s into it but I would like to get into sailing when I’m a bit older. I would love to be the person that sells up and fucks off at 50 just gone man, take a dog and hopefully the girl and sail around indo, fiji, South Pacific the fucken lot, man. I lurk forums of older people that do this and it’s fully achievable, you don’t need to spend millions or anything crazy on a sailboat

I’m still into snowboarding pretty big (winter work) and the bindingless snow surfing scene.

Almost all the hardcore guys and old-timers skate, so it’s not a big change. Just as cliquey tho. Especially here in Japan

Big fan of goretex. I don’t follow to many brands the the space, but worked at an “outdoors” store a few years back and have a closet full of arcteryx jackets, purchased at insane prices. Have a couple of arcteryx veilance pieces, want to get a couple more but prices be crazy.

Jazz. I don‘t really feel like a proper part of the local scene, though. I go to local sessions and concerts pretty regularly, but I only listen and barely ever talk to any of the musicians there. When I play I only play with my two friends and sometimes the occasional guest will play with us. Most people in the German jazz scene seem to be students and big nerds. Not very cool.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and fly fishing (especially Atlantic salmon).

BJJ because I love the training and my training partners are now almost like family to me. A lot of former skaters do BJJ as well, so we bond instantly. Trust is essential, as I trust you with my body and trust you won’t injure me while you’re trying to choke me unconcious. Since my ankles are so fucked from skating, this has pretty much replaced skating for me eventhough I still skate a few times a week in the summer. Hands down the most technical and challenging thing I’ve ever done, much more than any skating I’ve ever done.

Fly fishing for salmon because nothing in the world teaches patience like this. Nothing better than getting to your spot at 4am and fishing ‘til 10 pm. I always feel relaxed after a fishing trip and it’s like a mental reset for me. The high you get from hooking a salmon is indescribable, there’s no drug like it on earth. Fish bums are super passionate (although some are dicks just like anywhere else), and when you find some good ones, you’ve got friends for life. Downside is that gear is fucking expensive and I’ve gotten a taste for the high-end gear. Hope I get to go fishing for bonefish one day. Downside is its gain in popularity.

I used to be super into backcountry skiing also, but unfortunately I’ve come to realize the risk just doesn’t seem worth it anymore. I’ve lost a bunch of friends and aquaintances over the years to bad falls and avalanches. I was supposed to go on a trip last year to a place I’d been before (couldn’t get out of work for it) and lost a really good friend to an avalanche in a chute I’d skiied about 20 times. I know this chute like the back of my hand.

This was the most experienced backcountry rider I knew, he taught me so much and yet he still fell victim to Mother Nature’s wrath eventhough conditions were pristine and no one was more careful than he was. You never know what will happen out there and at 32 I kinda don’t want to find out anymore. I haven’t put ski boots on since and I don’t think I will for a while.

Sorry for the wall of text, I’m stoned and bored.

Backcountry skiing seems gnarly as hell. I've found myself getting sucked into these videos when I'm stoned and bored... I know you were talking about fishing for salmon but here's my second plug for hunting for Brookies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRWXy6L2qBc
[close]

Fishing brookies is so fun as well. Maine has such good fishing, I can’t wait to go back. I’m from Quebec so we have a lot of the same species.

I've never actually been to Maine, only fucked around looking for brook trout in little streams near my home in Michigan. I do get to head out to CO this summer (covid permitting) to visit my dad and fish for some cutthroats on the Platte River. I feel lame for being "too cool" for fishing when I was a teenager... lots of time I could have spent doing something endlessly relaxing and fun.

Been into the Grateful Dead for almost as long as I've been skating. First time I went to a family related show I decided that it was what I wanted to do. I've been to a lot of shows all over the states, some better than others. It's always special to see the family and friends, to dance and shake our bones, for a few hours or a few days. It's one of those things, like skating, when you know, you know. I think a lot of it has to do with the rewiring/development of new grooves in the brain through psychedelic use with the crowds, while the music is playing, but for me and a lot of others, just listening to the music has become a pretty special experience. sings me back home, every time

other than that, I don't know much about being into subcultures, because that implies involvement in communities and I get caught in my own trap of being aggravated with people flexing expensive gear and all that. I was pretty broke/poor for a long time so I learned to make whatever I've got work.

Been riding fixed gear bikes, when I'm not hurt, since about 2011 when an old, old dude rider gave me my first bike which was an old Bianchi racer. I don't know shit about gear, just what's worked for me and that riding fixed is the closest thing I've experienced to street skating that isn't street skating. I don't live near a decent city right now so I just like to go on long rides, occasionally taking it to logging roads and gravel trails where shit can get really gnarly and fun. Maybe one of these days I'll finally get some padded shorts.

I practice and teach people different yoga and Buddhist meditation practices. The ethics of Yogic practice/study are pretty integral in my life (non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, maintaining appropriate sexual energy/transmission, non-greed) and have helped shape my modes of operation. The metta meditation practices (may I be happy and peaceful, may I be healthy and strong, may I be safe and protected from inner and outer harm, may I live at ease; may you be happy and peaceful...) have been helpful in developing and maintaining a sense of self love and respect that I really appreciate and enjoy sharing with others. Same with traditional mindfulness based practices (focusing on the breath and sensations). My favorite aspect of teaching is teaching it to the kids because it's a great way to help them acknowledge that "as a person, you're ok just as you are." I try to operate from a trauma informed approach- bodily trauma, psych trauma, historical trauma- in that I recognize every one has something different and unique going on, that the body-mind-heart are connected, and that it's ok for everyone to need their own thing. I could go on and on and on but will just say that this is how I try to operate in all actions and thoughts.

When my leg isn't hemmed up, I'm usually hiking solo, trying to sleep outside, shooting guns, finding something/place beautiful in the world.

Another one for cycling here. Was always into skating and BMX as a kid, but seeing the MASH trailer on the DLX site in 2006? put my friends and I onto riding fixed gear bikes. We would go on group rides with a shop and I just got sucked into it, started working at a shops, learning mechanics. Eventually got a touring bike, a carbon road bike, CX, MTB etc. I've been at the same shop for around 11 years now and I'm still hyped. I'm definitely another one who hasn't really developed much since childhood in terms of recreational pursuits.

Could really go down a wormhole as far as all of the different folks who use bikes in different ways, and that's something I find really cool to witness and play a part in.

What's your instrument ? That's dope I'd be curious to learn about your learning process

I’m still into snowboarding pretty big (winter work) and the bindingless snow surfing scene.

Almost all the hardcore guys and old-timers skate, so it’s not a big change. Just as cliquey tho. Especially here in Japan

Do you mean this?: https://www.hovlandsnowskates.com/

I found a defunct ski hill in my area this weekend that would be fun for bindingless snowboarding. At resorts I would stick to my snowboard.

I’m into snowskating too (spring conditions only) but powdersurfing is basically a big homemade powder snowboard with grip on top.

The original snurfers were like this. Then in the late 90’s, some guys in BC were experimenting with bindingless snowboarding and created noboards (big stomp pads you put on a regular snowboard for grip, and a bungee that attaches into the binding inserts.

Then people started just making their own boards from scratch all over, US, Japan, Europe.

You can buy them from companies like grassroots and shark, but my friend makes 5-ply blanks and I shape my own.

This is a documentary made by the guy who does grassroots.

I've been laid up with a fractured ankle and torn tendon and ligaments for 7 months so I've been relying pretty heavily on these interests:

Making art - drawing, cartooning, animation, and a little bit of painting. I freelance at a few NYC art galleries so I like talking with the other employees and the artists about that kind of stuff.
Any of you folks animators?
This past Friday I visited The Drawing Center to see. David Hammons grease body prints accompanied with black and white photographs of his process by Bruce Talamon. Also, I saw some large/weird paintings by Ebecho - who I'd previously thought of as more of a cartoonist and illustrator than a painter.
http://drawingcenter.org/exhibitions/david-hammons

Swimming - in pre Covid times I used to have a membership to an indoor heated salt water pool by Union Square. Swimming laps is so helpful for my constant injuries and as a form of physical meditation. I was doing aqua PT up in Sleepy Hollow but now that's over and I plan on either finding a new indoor pool that's safe and hopefully affordable or just taking the bus out to Rockaway a few mornings every week and swimming in the ocean. When I first started swimming laps I thought about it as training to surf but the swimming itself really clears my mind. I guess it's kind of a boring thing but it means a lot to me.

Book club - I've got a two person book club with my mother where we read fiction and then talk out our critiques on the phone. So far my favorites have been Middlesex and Let The Great World Spin. The absolute worst one was Moonglow. My mom is also retiring from teaching this year and is planning to write a memoir so I'm really excited about that.

Comic book collecting - I'm too poor to collect much these days but I'm obsessed with indy comics, old newspaper cartoons, and 80s Marvel stuff. There's a cool shop in Brooklyn called Desert Island that specializes in indy and art comics. Every time I go there I spend way too much money and listen to the owner go off on loud, opinionated tangents.

Heres a beakdown or the different kinds of bears.
Berenstien Bear is a bear of Jewish descent
Black Bear is a bear of African-American descent.
Brown Bear is a bear of Latin descent.
Care Bear is a bear who "cares" about his appearance and cares about fashion
Chubby Bear is a bear who is heavy set and hairy.
Cub is a term used to describe a bear relatively younger in age. The term is also used to describe a bear's husband/partner who fulfills the passive role in the sexual relationship.
Daddy Bear describes a mature bear, who is often looking for a Cub (or younger man) for a relationship.
Grizzly Bear means that the individual is extremely dominant and typically extremely tall, heavy, or hairy.
Honey Badger describes a bear, who is blond and is usually muscular and not heavy.
Koala Bear is a bear of Australian descent.
Otter describes a man who is hairy but not heavy. An otter's build is leaner and muscular.
Otter Cub describes a younger man who is heavy but not hairy. His build is also leaner and muscular
Panda Bear denotes a bear of Asian descent.
Papa Bear describes a bear who has children and devotes most of the time he used to spend drinking and clubbing to his children.
Pocket Bear describes a bear of short stature.
Polar Bear is a bear with white or grey hair.
Seal Bear is a mostly hairless, heavier man. He's a seal because his body is slick like a seal.
Shape Shifting Bear is a bear that moves, at various times of his life, through different subcategories. He can go from a Chub Bear to an Otter to a Wolf.
Silver Fox describes a distinguished gentleman with salt and pepper hair.
Silver Otter describes a man who is hairy (not heavy), but whose hair is overall white
Wolf is a term for a bear who is rugged and outdoorsy but typically also a biker. A wolf can also be sexually aggressive.
Yogi Bear describes a bear who likes camping and hiking but also enjoys laying around the cave playing video games.

Bear Admirers: Those who are attracted to bears or hang out with them also have their own set of descriptions.

Chaser describes a man who is sexually attracted to heavy set gay men.
Goldilocks is usually a woman who hangs out with a group of bears. This is the Bear culture's term for their "fag hag."

Retro gaming - I don’t even play that many of them. I actually just recently got rid of a couple of consoles. I’ve been trying to buy less junk for junk sale, but I like the stories behind retro games, the marketing, and the creation.

And the a further extent of retro gaming the collectible trade market as a whole. It’s pretty fascinating. I’m not motivated at all to try to flip Pokémon cards or what print run my copy of super Mario bros is, but I find the market fascinating. Particularly market munipulation and how hype driven it can be sometimes. Also the rise and fall of trends and fads is fascinating, Like Elvis, homels, beanie babies, and trains. I’m just watching from the outside but don’t want to participate at all.

Lastly animation, mostly American/western. I come off as an anime nerd, but I love western animation more. I started a podcast but it sort of feel apart

I used to work with the inventor of the shaving gel strip. It’s a hydrophilic coating that activates when you run water on it. The surfactants bloom to the surface and hold the water evenly across the surface.

That’s that glide son.

Razors are dope. Ever watch the guys That spit razors? Shit’s crazy.

-surfing; haven't been much in the last year since moving to a city but like someone mentioned earlier in this thread - surf culture is pretty cringy so I don't associate with it much but fuck there is no other feeling like being on a surfing kick and what it can do for your overall health/well being with how tired you get after paddling for few hours and just being out in nature. Pretty comparable to hiking

-swimming; been hitting the local pool a few times a week for exercise and now I am just enjoying trying to top how many laps I can do within the given time and improving my technique

-biking; I like to get some miles in when I can but not really part of the culture per se

-graffiti; I don't paint anymore but used to a good amount when I was younger but I enjoy kinda keeping up on it whether its through following people in different cities positing pics of who is active. Culture is definitely cringy but it's one of those things that kinda changes your perspective when looking around a city just like skateboarding does

-music; just nerding out about old hardcore/punk bands(going to shows pre-rona) and all other types of genres

-nerdy computer stuff more related to work but I like seeing what's going on with different programming languages/frameworks

- model trains, Märklin style. Been doing these since forever with my old man. Building landscapes etc.

- old cars, we got a 240z in the family (single owner) that I get to work on and drive from time to time

I'm really into traditional wet shaving, specifically DE safety razors, and collect vintage Gillettes and such. Probably the only one on here who is, but let me know if I'm wrong.
[close]

I used to work with the inventor of the shaving gel strip. It’s a hydrophilic coating that activates when you run water on it. The surfactants bloom to the surface and hold the water evenly across the surface.

That’s that glide son.

Razors are dope. Ever watch the guys That spit razors? Shit’s crazy.

I always hated the goo strip. I have extremely coarse curly hair with sensitive skin underneath so if I shave with store bought multi-blade razors I get a lot of ingrown hairs. I shave my head and face about once a week with whichever DE razor of my choosing for that day. Can't beat the classic one-blade it gets nice and close without causing razor bumps.

I luv racing.

I had a nice ej7 once.

A 280zx was the car I learned to drive in.

We had a El Camino with a 327 in it for a bit. California car.

I definitely miss having a fast car.

I know I'll never own another car in my lifetime...

I enjoy photography, but I 100% do not want to be around any photographers that are gear nuts. I'll appreciate your work, but I don't give a shit about your setup. I'm mostly a nature/wildlife photographer, so I rarely engage with other photographers anyway.

I've always loved cars, but it's an expensive hobby and clashes with my inner environmentalist. I have started getting into sim-racing this past year though... super fun (and expensive). All the gear I want for sim-racing would probably set me back at least $2k. There's a lot of judgmental dickheads that get on your case for not doing everything perfectly, but overall the community is chill.

Craft beer, like obnoxious craft beer, like wait in lines at breweries for releases craft beer. While I participate in this I will say craft beer dudes are the fucking worst, their only interest is beer and having the cans/bottles from the most hyped breweries and all they talk about in line is the last time they stood in line for a release or the next release they are hitting. I'm the dude with the airpods everyone is talking around because I don't give a shit about the standing in line or being a die hard fan of a certain brewery. I just want to chug nice beer from time to time. These guys are more insufferable than skateboarders and that takes a lot.

Older BMWs. Specifically e28s and e34s. Have owned both. Working and driving old cars is fun.

Photography, but haven’t been motivated to shoot anything in nearly a year.

I'm trying to psyche myself up to get a fun project car. It's just intimidating because I really don't know how to do anything to a car beyond the basics. I also don't have a garage lol. You do any sim-racing?

Also, do you think your lack of motivation regarding photography is related to quarantine? I've been finding myself in a bit of a funk with my photography as well, and I think it's because I'm not traveling or getting out much. I can only do so much in the area that I live...

Older cars aren't to bad. I got my first one two summers ago and until that I had never worked on one aside from changing tires. It's pretty daunting at first, and I'm not expert but in hindsight it's not as complicated as I thought. Mind you the car in question was fairly "simple". But you eventually learn that part A helps part B function, and so on. And thanks to the internet there's a lot of videos, forums and guides. Thankfully my dad grew up in the racing scene and is/was super into cars. He's so knowledgeable, and used to have some hobby cars before he had kids. So part of the reason I got one is because it would be a great way to hang out together and share a passion. I can tell how excited he gets when we work on a project, and it's really a good feeling. My BMW 533i was pretty simple engine wise, so it was a good car to learn on I'd say. Unfortunately it needed a lot of work - and money - and at once point we had more of the engine outside the car than inside. I got it in the spring and only got to drive it a couple times before the winter came so it was a bit of a bummer having a car that I couldn't drive. I like you didn't have a garage, so the car would live in my parents driveway and the work would get done outside in the elements. I have photos of us with a rigged up tarp protecting the engine while we put things back together.

I feel you on the environmental part. I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that sense, as I have this old car that's meant to be driven and I enjoy driving it, but I also try to keep my footprint as small as possible. I kind of justify it by the fact that I walk or bike for 90% of my activities/tasks/etc. I'd really only be using my car on the weekends to go do things. And those activities would be hiking, biking or seeing friends, rather than idling at the mall parking lot buying shit I don't need. I'd sometimes get the desire to go for an aimless drive, and sometimes I'd comply but most times I try to have a destination and reason for doing so.

I've never tried sim racing, but it looks super fun. If I had an xbox I'd probably be playing Forza as there's a lot of cool cars in that and the game play looks amazing.

I think the photography funk is mostly due to quarantine. I used to be shooting about a roll of film every 1-2 weeks. In the last year I think I've shot maybe 3? It's kind of ironic too, because a lot of the photos (https://cargocollective.com/sometimeperhaps) I'd take would be of "small person in a big space" and look pretty isolated and deserted, or very much observational based, hoping to catch passing moment. And now when in theory it would make my "job" even easier, I can't be bothered to do it. I have been quite conscious about following local rules and stuff, so I don't take random walks like I used to and don't really leave my neighbourhood much, to which like you I've kind of exhausted everything I want to shoot. At the start of the pandemic I was feeling really fucked up mentally about it, and feeling down overall and very anxious so that didn't help. Due to that I'd avoid a lot of websites and places I used to visit - including SLAP - just because the constant news and gloom made things worse. I still haven't really gotten back to looking at a lot of the places I used to find inspiration, one of which was Instagram as it's probably the best place to see others work, which was something I'd spend a lot of time doing. Maybe I'll break out of it, we'll see. I've thought about selling off some of my gear, but some of it is hard to come by without spending an absurd about. I'm hoping to get back into it in the spring, as the winter has been historically slow for me from an output perspective. I just feel like I'm not mentally in the game anymore, as I used to always take camera with me wherever I went and be looking for images, where now I feels like that part of my brain isn't functioning anymore.

I'm also like you when I could care less about gear nuts and certain aspects of the "scene". I don't mind talking gear a little bit, and knowing what makes something so good/bad, or why a certain lens is useful and the like. I have a slightly above average knowledge level, but if you asked me what nikoncanonsony you should by, I couldn't really tell you much off the top of my head.  I have no time for pixel peeping or arguing about what brand is better, which you find a lot of unfortunately. I like talking about photographers and their work though.

Yeah my parents live 5 hours away, so I'll probably wait until I have room to work on one :) As far as cars go, keeping an old one running is about as green as you can be. Maintaining an old, potentially inefficient car is probably more environmentally friendly than having a brand new Prius.

Forza is definitely a fun starting point (that's how I got into it), but now I'm a full-on sim snob lol. Forza can be considered an arcade/simcade driving game, but Assetto Corsa/iRacing/BeamNG are where the good stuff really is. But for those you need a pc and a wheel/pedal setup for it to be worthwhile at all.

I'd definitely suggest you look to IG or some other outlet for some inspiration. Sometimes just seeing that one beautiful photo can get you juiced up to get out there or to try a new technique. Winter is a bad time for me photography-wise as well... I don't live where it snows, but it gets just cold enough for most of the critters I usually search for to go dormant or to migrate south. It's usually my time to experiment and find some sort of ~aesthetic~ shots since I don't have a lot of good subjects around.

Hopefully things look up this year with the vaccines going around, but I know that's no sure thing. I hope you get some good shots soon. Cheers m8.

That is what's up. I love cycling and biking to breweries (blessed to live in a city where there are so many in biking distance) but can't stand either from a sub-cultural standpoint. Craft beer guys take the taco, though.

As far as sub-culture, I've been involved in the noise/industrial music scene and cassette culture for while.

Between a dude that tattooed me and drank, my uncle who brewed, and going to Dead shows, there was good exposure! Seems like the whole craft beer thing has gotten a lot bigger recently. Gosh I don't actually know. I played futbol/futsal since I was a young kid. This predates skateboarding entirely for me. I had a trial for a real club many years ago. I thought I was going to do it. It didn't work out. Dodgy knee. I once contemplated getting into coaching. Playing with old guys now is really funny.

I also got into playing music at a young age. I began taking piano lessons when I was 5. Later got into drumming. I have a drummer uncle that got to tour in his youth so I was under his wing. And then skating came into the picture. Dropped the drums. I switched over to the guitar and a little bass later on. Actually if I'm honest guitarists can be insufferable so I don't actually enjoy that subculture very much. But from a far, it's not that bad.

Love good craft beer though. Luckily I have friends who work in the beer scene so often I can get some stuff without having to show up to releases, they always keep a few cans/bottles on the side for me so I can get 'em before everyone.

Almost every brewery I frequent has switched to internet presale for releases during COVID and give a few days to pick up the order. I don't know that I'll ever be able to return to waiting in lines for beer again.

I wish I had some connects at the breweries to have some stuff put aside. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to foster one of those friendships as the people working the breweries seem equally as annoyed with beer kooks.

When I was younger, i loved the soccer (futbol) subculture since I played soccer whenever I wasn't skateboarding.  Loved both but skateboarding won that battle. Now, I just play soccer with other people because I'd rather be playing it instead of talking about it the way I talk about skateboarding with friends/strangers.

Video game subculture is fascinating to me (once you get past the typical neckbeard gamer), since I'm drawn to the way people try to "break the game" or challenge themselves to beat it differently by using a game's mechanics not as intended. Some similarities to skateboarding with that "determination/creative thinking approach"

Music scenes: notably the hardcore, metalcore, "screamo", metal, etc. shows were fun ways to meet people and get into music/expression/life shit, all that. Going to shows and immersing into the discussions about the different styles of music and topics bands write about to how it makes my body move in the pit or in my room alone got me stoked. Emotionally engaging so I sought after it for years pre-Corona.

Check out Hoplark, they make teas blended with hops that are pretty sick. They have them at whole foods or you can get them direct from them. I drink those on nights where I want a beer but already made plans to ride or skate the next day and don't want my body to feel like shit.

I had to quit drinking 5 or 6 years ago, but I really enjoyed craft beers and hunting them down. Between a dude that tattooed me and drank, my uncle who brewed, and going to Dead shows, there was good exposure! Seems like the whole craft beer thing has gotten a lot bigger recently. Wish I could drink some of those fire looking/smelling IPAs. Drink some for me dude!!!

I‘m on the wagon as well. There are alcohol free IPA‘s out there that work pretty well as a substitue, e.g. Brewdog Punk AF.

I used to love playing beer league ice hockey, shit was so much fun. The only league in my town got really saturated with people thinking there were scouts in the stands and taking shit way too seriously; I got tired of getting wrecked because some asshole had a bad day at work. I got the black and yellow sweater on

I also really like playing 9 ball, I don't play in a league or anything but I would spend lots of time at the pool hall pre covid. My parents have a table so it gives my dad and I something to enjoy together. I have this awesome McDermott cue thats actually made from recycled skate decks, the nature of the construction insures each cue will be one of a kind too. kinda cool

Yo I've waited in some lines and they are insufferable, indeed. Beer is good though!

I love beer, but I don't dabble with much craft beer. I have the same beer taste as my old Slavic dad... traditional European lagers and ales mostly (Spaten, Duvel, Karlovacko, etc). I'm honestly not even sure what constitutes a "craft" beer. I just associate that with weird flavors and too many hops lol.

Pilsner Urquell and Weihestephaner are the shit. I also realized that the trappist breweries in Europe are definitely way better than any of that style brewed in the US. Even the carbonation lets you know right away.

Aw man, I used to really, really dig shooting pool. Since I stopped hanging out in bars, I don't really shoot anymore. Damn. I miss that. When I was a kid and would stay with my grandmother in North Carolina, her and her husband were all about pool. Playing in APA leagues and all that. They'd take me into some pretty gnarly bars when I was a kid so they could play on league nights, which was like 3 or 4 nights per week. Her husband was a beast on the table and despite being an absolute scum bag, really taught me how to shoot.

Much like the OP, big into football since I was around 4. Played my first game with a guy who went on to play for the national team. I scored 11 goals in that game but I believe it was all downhill from there haha. I quit In high school once they got the national coach for our team and practice was 3 times a week plus game day. No time for skating with that approach.

Another one is golf (if that’s a subculture). Got a weekend away lined up with some mates next month where we’ll get a few rounds in along with plenty of drinks I expect. We play for money with some big bets on random things like who’s shot will go closest to the people playing ahead. Plus we’ve got poor quality equipment for whoever is losing to use so it gets pretty damn competitive

dunno if this counts but free-diving, really obsessed with being a fish and holding my breath for longer durations each time, going deeper into the pool and faffing around at the bottom fucking with people. its really fun to amaze and teach kids/adults how to really explore the deep-deep end of the pool and do tricks like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKUAX187mXc i do a different technique that i think is superior since its handsfree, uses less air and generally looks cooler/smoother stronger rings. once you get really good you can shoot 2 rings beside each other and watch them expand upwards and combine at the end doing some crazy physics shit.

later transfered those skills to the swim teams and won some provinical relays for my school :) - covid shut that down and now i vape incessantly.

uncanny how we all have some connection to water/softy drugs/darker music.

if you gotta super deep pool and need help with some free-diving stuff, please pm me i would love to share the joy of freediving/swimming

Shit, I'm not even sure if I like skateboarding.

I'm not sure it is a subculture as it isn't really against the dominant culture, but there I would like to live my life in a cafe in europe debating politics. I got to do this briefly in Greece for a month and it was fun.

Also, classic cinema and pretentious art films are fun. The best part about LA is the Nuart theater and the best thing in Toronto is the Bell light box theater.

Backpack rap/late 80's to early 2000's hip hop- I've always been a big hip hop fan, part of what I grew up on. Don't pay attention outside some smaller acts these days when it comes to new releases. I'm also in on collecting vinyl for this era of rap. Love the mainstream mid-90's stuff, but am also a sucker for Cyne, Nujabes, Little Brother, 9th Wonder, Slum Village, etc.

BBQing- Smoking food. Passion I've developed over the past 10 years. Big into slowcooking Ribs, Pulled Pork, Brisket, etc. Love to experiment with different regional styles from the states. Also a huge fan of finding cheaper lower key restaurants such as BBQ joints (but not exclusively) when I visit cities. Try to avoid chains as much as possible. I want to know where the best local burger joint, best ribs, best pizza or whatever your city claims they are great at (Nashville Hot Chicken, Chicago Italian Beef, Buffalo Wings, Montreal Smoked meat etc).

Love beer- Def not a beer expert or would claim to be one. Of the known ones I love Pilsner Urquell or Stiegl of more established brands. When in the states I try to get Sierra Nevada or Yuengling  since they aren't sold here. Recently since the pandemic and all bars are closed (and the local government owned stores are a bit of a zoo), I found local craft breweries are offering local delivery for free. The product is a bit of a premium at a per can cost, but I like to support local businesses in a time like this, so I've pretty much ordered from different local craft brewers the past 8 months trying different ones fairly often and repeating the ones I like.

Big sports fan. Cheer for my locals (Leafs, Raps and Blue Jays), plus cheer for the Browns in football (my dads team growing up and I inherited them at a terrible time but they seem to be turning around), and Manchester United (I know frontrunning, but easy team to watch in North America in the late 90's to mid-2000's before anything could be streamed).

Video games- pandemic got me back into them after not playing as much over recent years. Enjoy the games, do hate the fanboy culture and toxic culture surrounding it.

Film- Love exploring iconic directors such as Leone, Scorsese, Kurosawa, Billy Wilder, Coppola etc. But, I'm also a sucker for 80's and 90's classics and iconic franchises like James Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, etc.

Shit, I'm not even sure if I like skateboarding.

Love Bell Lightbox. Got to see the Irishman there in Theatres during limited release. Also, when they had the Irishman they did a Scorsese retrospective so I got to see my all time favorite film in 35mm in Goodfellas. Still pissed I didn't go to the Lawrence of Arabia 65mm showing they had at the very beginning of 2020. Absolutely a great thing to have here.

Awesome memories with your grandma dude, thanks for sharing those, for real. Covid has been tough for pool rooms and the ones that are open are pretty relaxed on their health policies...i had covid in january and dont want it again haha. But yeah, thats my main cue! I love that thing, I also have a jump break cue which isn't really worth looking at. It's just this heavy beast with plain black finish. I also have my first cue which is just a basic two piece Players. That thing shoots fucking great and I'll totally bust it out if I'm feeling off or having some other mental bullshit with the McDermott

[close]

[close]

Cheers m8.

The sim stuff does look cool. I've watched a few videos from that Jimmy guy on YouTube, the one who lives in the UK in a shed and has the nice Skyline. From out outsiders view, it looks almost a perfect replica to real life driving. Seeing people play truck driving sims appeal to me almost more than a racing game would for some reason.

Thanks for the kind words Pal. I have found a site recently that's filled my void for "pictures of things I like to look at", which is basically a variety of different design types. So things are on the up and up I think. I'm feeling better creativity wise and am pushing myself to just create, whatever that might be.

Nice cue. A friend moved into a house with a table, and I was playing a lot of 8 ball pre-covid. I was putting in some hours and seeing some progression. Oddly enough once I couldn't play, I got into watching snooker matches on YouTube. Never played it before, but it's pretty unreal. Would mostly watch Ronnie O'Sullivan clips and games. Once I can get back to playing I want to give 9 ball a go. I feel like the challenge will help me get better, or at least consider my shots and try and learn some control.

Snooker is on a whole other level, just the size of the table is ridiculous. also, there are no diamond markers on the rail, those guys are just ridic. There is a movie called The Rack Pack about a rivalry between these two snooker players in the 80's. I found the whole thing on youtube earlier this year but for now, heres the trailer.

Aw yeah I love Jimmy; watching him is what got me to get a pc and wheels/pedals. Even though I love the sim aspect, I do mostly just cruise around. Racing is fun sometimes, but it's hard and can be frustrating. BeamNG is a great one for fucking around in. It's basically a sandbox driving/physics simulator that you can cause total chaos in lol. You can build cars from scratch, make maps, rally race/rock crawl, and absolutely destroy every piece of the car. It's cathartic as hell.

I also really like playing 9 ball, I don't play in a league or anything but I would spend lots of time at the pool hall pre covid. My parents have a table so it gives my dad and I something to enjoy together. I have this awesome McDermott cue thats actually made from recycled skate decks, the nature of the construction insures each cue will be one of a kind too. kinda cool

It really is. To me it feels more strategy based than other table games, like when you can't make a really hard shot, you make a slightly harder shot to snooker your opponent. It just adds another level of madness to the game. And how it seems like finals matches can go on for hours. It's impressive to keep that level of metal focus for that long.
