Skateboarding => USELESS WOODEN TOY BANTER => Topic started by: UndesiredUsername on May 20, 2021, 05:18:07 AM

After mentioning on his short lived Ghetto Bird Podcast that he was having problems sourcing wood for a “project” of his, he has now posted on Instagram that he has been planning a comeback for years and to watch out. Seems like Nick Tucker(I know, he is insufferable) will likely land on the team since he has no board sponsor and has been pushing Axion hard.
What do y’all think of the potential come back?
I’d do regrettable things to see some new Kareem footage tbh

You beat me to it! lol Like we haven't seen those shitty decks floating around for years. He blew it not having new decks ready last year when THPS dropped again.

That said, I hope it works out, I love Kareem.

I don't think any skate board brand has really successfully re-launched. The closest is Alien and Plan B.
I think there would be a viable market for re-issuing classics from brands like 101, Mad Circle, and New Deal with high-quality silkscreen simply for people who wanted wall hangers. But, re-launching brands from the dead with a new team rarely works out. Most of these brands died or lost relevancy for a reason.

He should just call it something else. Let city stars stay dead start a new company. Rerelease graphics if needed. I doubt younger kids give a shit about a city stars relaunch and as an older person I don’t either.
-
This is sure to shake up the industry
-
I only saw 1 City Stars deck ever in real life. My boy bought a Caine Gayle deck and put Orion trucks on it "to be like Kareem". Both trucks kingpins snapped within 2 days... never seen that ever. Board was ok, but I mean... boards only lasted us like 12 days back then because we were skating a lot.

Orion trucks were the worst. Axle slipped all day long. But they sure did have stacked team.

easy for me to say this in retrospect but he probably did not have any sort of manager or anything like that back in the day im assuming
the main problem i think seems that dwindle launched too many brands they should have stuck to just world + blind and focused on keeping those 2 cool + keeping all the guys on there happy would have been huge. imagine they had deca, city stars, and ateam roster all spread out on those 2 teams and they didnt do corny shit like flameboy and chand fernandez. keep the older guys who are retiring on to help mentor the new guys that would have been a great role for kareem i feel like sometimes when those guys in soccer who are older but legend af like ronaldo or messi or whoever comes on the field, as some 22 yr old yung buck you dont want to look wack when you are makin ur debut on the field with him if you know what i mean? i think that goes a long way and also those guys names sell jerseys > also sell boards + shoes etc. they just needed to keep him on relevant brands.

Kareem already tarnished his rep by filling this Axion relaunch with horrible team picks. It's a shame. If he hadn't done it I'd still be thinking of Trilogy era when I think Kareem. Now when I hear his name I think stupid looking tight jeans with loads of weird patches/distressing, and Micky Papa. Ruined. Relaunching City Stars with a similar cast can only hurt his rep more.

Do a limited release of boards like Muska did with Shortys late last year. Charge a premium since the people who grew up watching Kareen are older with expandable income. That way you don't have to worry about finding a consistent woodshop or one's with high MOQs.
Problem is Kareem doesn't have a graphic as iconic as Muska's rising sun

Little did he know the star light that we see is one of the star which died

Damn never thought about that; I remember liking the “brand” but never wanting an specific board of them

I'm pretty sure he came on a few weeks after the initial launch. Someone help me out on that. And I don't even think they have a team right now. That didn't last long. At all. He should be like AO and )focus on City Stars) as a one man band. We don't want a team. We want Kareem. Same with Muska and others. At least for me.

I’m not sure what the deal with the team is rn, but they are definitely still making shoes. They’re releasing the Nutek in the coming weeks. From my understanding, Kareem was given equity and brought on as “Creative Director”
I bought the Genesis they released last year and they are pretty nice quality. Real suede, Comfy, lasted me a few months of daily skating.

imagine if he'd pick up Diego najera

was only a matter of time before bounced checks came back into style

I can finally rock my cubic zirconium city stars chain that I bought from Steven Cales

Creature. They died off in 1999 and came back in 2004ish.

Fair point. I know Creature is extremely well selling now, I just forget about them because I've never really been their target audience. Whereas I grew up an Alien/Habitat and Crailtap stan.
-
Honestly, I’d buy one just to keep, even if he made x amount of decks and sold em at $100 a pop. Would be a cool little collection piece.

Vert 'Reem would have been so dope. Call me an ingrate, but I like his flip tricks on ramps more than Penny's.

They did a soft reboot 3 years ago
The hard boards out in texas and in some online shops. the boards were made by unified dost. IDK if they have a woodshop or not, but the wood felt heavy.
despite that, would definitely buy again, just to have another city stars board.
-
I wish Kareem could just figure out a way to get the old Menace logo on some boards, some tees, buckets and snap backs, etc. and sell those which I'd welcome with open arms. But I'm not too picky as to whatever way I get Kareem clips these days. I hope he puts his skating out there again.
-
Because of the pandemic & other missteps I think it can make a solid impression this time around, they already have been one of the best teams in skateboarding
-
Would rather see Kareem on Palace, dripped in their clothes, filming low impact lines and flips on transition

He actually gets flowed Supreme from what I can tell.

New Deal does reissues with silk screened graphics ($10 more than heat transfer) and the boards are made at PS Stix. I have an Andrew Morrison reissue and the concave is a little steeper than I like, but overall it's a really great board.

same here, that or just re-boot menace without a team and re-issue old stuff.

There was something about a menace reboot last year, probably got killed off by corona

Kareem did not pick the initial team nor did he initiate this relaunch in any way. Kareem was brought on way after the wheels had been set in motion to relaunch Axion. Skaters were already being contacted/selected to represent the brand before Kareem was even officially involved with the brand again.

I was thinking the same. I unfortunately missed the Menace era so I’d love to be around for a revival

Kareem rocking the Shirt and Chain.

Man, looks like he is living well down in Texas. That is a nice house
-
Nick Tucker. Motherfucker.
Kareem should have bought the Menace name when it got sold to whoever when Smolik quit SM to ride for it.
I can only presume whoever bought it had more liquid cash than Kareem.
What a pity.

Yessir
I'll buy some reissues though

It'd be funny if he had to change the name again.

What would be the next logical evolution of the name?
It went Menace, All City, All City Stars, City Stars.
Can someone buy the rights to the City Stars name to see what he comes up with?

Wait, Kareem Campbell already quit the podcast game? ??? There was a lot of potential there if he'd just get rid of that other dude and get an energetic Kelly Hart-ish sidekick instead.

I hope he gets more of his friends who don’t know anything about skateboarding to rap about him skateboarding.
“Gettin’ a ollie…. DOWN A WHOLE FLIGHT A STAIRS” was a choice line that my friends and I religiously quoted after THPS2 came out. Way better than Tragedy Khadafi rapping about kick flip tail slide hang glides in Supa’s Mixtape 2 part.
Remember Wu Tang skateboards? Did any of you guys own one of those? My friend had a Maurice Key deck that I was always jealous of. I know Wu Wear was pretty bullshit, but some of those decks had awesome graphics…
Anyway, the whole issue with Menace and All City was the brand name. There should be nothing holding him back from reissuing Menace graphics as long as the company stays with the City Stars name. I agree with whoever said Palace should scoop him, and if add Tom Penny to that list as well.
To those who mentioned it, I remember the Menace relaunch being some fugazy scam shit that Kareem publicly denounced. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s what I recall.
At least Axion is doing the right thing with their shoe re-releases, Es should take a page out of their book. There’s so many guys that could have been picked for that team besides Mickey Papa though, their squad makes me not wanna buy in…
-
woah, wu wood. i forgot all about them. they had a little team too
