That's an awesome cover shot.

Insane photo. Wonder how they lit it.
-
This might be one of the best covers ever. Gonna be a memorable one for sure

Tosh Townend in an Emerica or Element video I believe. he drops in from the top arc. Or maybe it was Levi brown?
Cover is rad!!
-
wow. skating towards traffic as well. even if the barrier makes it a little safer, the runway, bolts sticking out of landing and overall spot don’t. great cover.
-
Epis cover. Psyched to see the raw footage of this trick. One and done?

The end bit looks like something Daewon has/would skate?
-
Super stoked for Alex Papke, it's an amazing cover
-
the angles pretty gnarly as it seems like the photog is standing in the middle of the road with his back to traffic. maybe some kind of weird tripod or something :o
-
So, just to confirm, he rode on the circular pipe and ollie over and in right?
Looks very hectic in all aspects from run up to landing, cars, bust factor. Pretty iconic photo.
-
Whoa! That's fucking gnarly.
The whole Bay Bridge is hectic, but that's right after the tunnel. It's definitely one of the most stressful parts when you are driving into SF because of the light change and cars entering into traffic from Yerba Buena Island.
Any backstory on how the whole thing went down? From a car I've glanced at the bank on the side when you exit the island. You can see it in the photo of the person hiding behind the barrier: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRSBIFvl9cV/
It never crossed my mind to go in from the top. I'm interested in how Evan and the photographer got to the spot.
My first thought would be parking a car on Yerba Buena Island and walking towards the spot. Then either:
a. Dashing through traffic across the Bay Bridge from the exit/on ramp
b. Scaling down from the top of the tunnel, not sure if possible
c. Hiking under the bridge then climbing up, not sure if possible
The only other thing I can think of is pulling off as much as possible to the left after the tunnel next to the barriers, hopping out, maybe throwing down flares / cones behind your pulled over vehicle to hopefully prevent someone from crashing into you, and just barging it. But that wouldn't explain the person hiding on the other side.
A van / car in the lane or off to the side would make sense as to protecting the photographer if they were in the road (or shooting from drivers seat, shotgun, or roof)
Update: Saw Papke's comment on the gram saying he just stood in traffic
-

Instant classic cover!!

Wtf is up with that jacket?
-
Papke shared the backstory on Instagram:
"I had an insanely busy month of May mapped out with work but when Evan hit me with this photo idea I couldn't say no. I had two days open at the beginning of the month so we drove up from LA on Cinco de Mayo and went straight to the Bay Bridge. Evan did this fairly quickly but timing the photo while standing in highway traffic wasn't easy. As soon as we got one I believed to be good enough, police pulled up, arrested both of us, and preceded to tell me they were going to take my camera bag, memory card included, into evidence until the trial was over. We spent five hours in jail, got out, and without any of my gear flew back down to LA the next day. I found a camera on craigslist, got a flash setup from @danstolling and left the next morning for three weeks of trips. Evan and I went back to SF a month later for trial, and once we showed up they let us know all charges had been dropped. We made our way to evidence at CHP and lucky enough we retrieved the bag with the photo still on the card."
Glad it ended well for everyone.

damn, what a relief that must have been
-
he had to roll straight on that cylinder and basically ollie up a five stair into that bank
-
starheadbody has a deathwish
low key, totally fucked though. story behind it makes it even more mental
-
It would be nice to just have a single thread for every new months thrasher cover.

Without laying something down as a kicker that appears frankly impossible unless he's donger on steroids. Way too far and tall based on that photo.
-
the story made it so much more gnar.
also in regards to bridge skating...that Sheckler bridge tail drop in china was pure insanity
-
That cover is a fuckin doozy.
Hopefully this means we can get some more footage. One of the best out.

pretty sure rye beres was filming from across the bridge, he posted a photo of him and cody chapman hiding behind a barrier
-
i literally went back to edit my first post before that story was posted and was going to say what if it was just them shooting it and he got his camera taken as evidence and didn’t know if he got the photo or not tell they got out but thought that would be too wild of a story. turns out it was even crazier. and the google earth photo makes the roll up so much crazier. wow.
-
Definitely up there along with the Jeremy Wray cover and the Clive Cover with the "he could have actually died" factor

That’s an iconic photo but the story behind it makes it even better.
Evan is part of skateboarding history now, that’s just one of those covers that will always resonate.

Woah amazing cover! It has been a while since I last saw a cover that really stood out in terms of being more than a really great trick on a traditional obstacle... this should be in a gallery!
Backstory makes it even crazier!

I always found it strange how mags would put out issues about two months out ahead of time. Like... it's mid July - and they've got the September issue out?? It's not even august yet LOL.
Dope cover and back-story. theyre damn lucky to have gotten out that easily, and gotten their shit back!
