I'm not into wall hangers but I'm thinking about picking up a pig shape to skate, like a 10x30 Skull (http://www.skullskates.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/1_40/products_id/1757/osCsid/0146ed0df827f99f82a9edcc228dc0c2) or PP reissue (barf, I know). Are these junk wood sold to old dudes like me to hang on their walls, or are they actually good? Any small brands making pigs I should check out?
If you ARE skating one, what's your set up?

I have a Cab street-mini set up. 9.6x29.75. It’s outside of the dimensions you’re looking for, but maybe I can shed a little bit of insight. It’s thicker than a standard 7 ply and the edges are more squared off. It doesn’t feel weak or flexy like some other reissues. I did have to re-drill 2 baseplate holes because a lot of re-issues are drilled for old style baseplates

I believe Fixer Skateboards make a pig shape, check their instagram, only viable in the US though

Thicker plys maybe? Good to hear it's not weak or flexy though, that was what I was worried about.

Yeah, I'm ok with that though.

i have a skull horse i use for a cruiser with ace 66 classics. it's super flat, the wheel base is long as hell @ 17", but it doesn't feel cheap. i don't do anything wild on it but it's a blast down parking garages, weird banks, and i assume ditches if i had access to them.

$lave War Pig shape is great.

I always have a 10 inch reissue board in the line up…
It used to be my main but now I like to keep a functional popsicle or mellow shape and a fun shape for when the mood strikes me or I’m skating transition only

The current Fixer “Pig Tank”, which I really like, is not a pig- more of a early 90’s shape. Definitely a modern double kick concave. I do have a Powell Ripper, but the modern concave version. Wood is pretty solid; maybe a little “dead” feeling, but that may be the long ass wheelbase, risers and 10” trucks. I’ve also skated and really like the Black Label 10” Lucero racing stripe/cross/thumbhead shape.
As far as traditional pigs go, I picked up a Vision… shite, to make a long story short, the vision og concave pigs are pretty flat, have less rounded edges and seem fairly solid. Get a Grigley.

I think you're right.

When I was 10 this is the board I would have gotten if I knew that skate shops were a thing. Instead I got a Nash After Burner form Target. Which is basically the same shape.

Still working on getting the lapper just right. I have to add another riser and I made the coppers from PVC. The wheels didn't come out till 1987 so I'm gonna need to find something else for those but these work great at my park.
The first thing I bought at a skate shop was the sticker of this graphic and I put it on my Nash

Nice. How is it? What size Aces you got on there?

I was skating a 10x30 deathbox for a while as a fun get drunk and slap curbs board. I actually had like four or five period boards but i took most of them apart because I'd rather skate as best as i can for as long as i can and I'd rather skate double kick decks
-
tried em out, mainly for transition. not really a fan of them, normal shaped boards just feel like home for me on all types of terrain. I’ll set my shaped board up once in a while though.
-
i've skated 2 powell pigs and a Schmitt Stix Ripsaw. i thought i liked them until i skated a shaped deck with modern concave and a normal wheelbase. never looked back since.
i'm not telling you to not get one. it's a fun experience for sure. loved riding bowls with them, but there are better options.
i had my pigs setup with Indy 169s and Mini Cubics, but thats not the way to go. youd need something like indy 149s maybe to prevent a crazy hotrod with the mini cubics. but only the bigger indy's usually come with oldschool mounting holes you need for the powell reissues.
the Schmitt Stix i rode with 169s and 60mm Dogtown K9's
managed to hunt down an old photo

Rides good does't seem like cheep wood but it's dipped so I can't see the grain. They're old school 66's because the wheels are so wide. If I went with STF 53mm's then I might try 77's.
I ride my trucks pretty loose so I've been getting an annoying wheel bite that I can't ride through so I have more riser pads and longer bolts on order. That will help with the lapper from scrapping as well

I have on ot the original BAKU Pigs, skated it for like 1-2 short sessions on some quarterpipes and it is a hustle to just a pivot fakie. Disaster tricks are fucking hard since you do not have a nose on these things.
But I clearly can see an advantage on barriers. Since barriers are basically vertical walls that you bash into, the nose always hits it first and scrapes. Without a nose it's a bit easier to get on top of a barrier.
I use it as a wallhanger now and went back to 10' boards with actual noses

More just a question for people who have big boards, or specifically regarding a "pig" but what defines a pig besides being 10" wide?
I get that some people call any big board a pig, others have said it is a specific shape, or even any board with almost zero nose and a big square tail, or a board with no concave, etc so there are various definitions floating around.
Then to go another step, do you prefer the OG pig (no concave at all apart from a kick tail), a modern concave board in a pig shape, or not a fan and would rather ride something else entirely?
Even preference of wood can come into it too, just to really fine tune it.

IMO it's a wide board with little to no taper from the stubby nose to the wide tail.

pigs are a shape. the old school no nose, square tail boards you're thinking of. no fancy shaping going on. almost allways have oldschool concave, the only pigs with modern concave i can think of are the Creature ones.
now shape wise there might be some debate on if i would include that one old Caballero or the Skull Skates Skeletal decks who look like pigs but have some taper going towards the tail. but something like the Roskopp Target is not getting that pass cause the tail flares out like a fish.

i did mention a Ripsaw but thats only cause it had oldschool concave aswell and thats just not too functional in my opinion.

Got some old school shapes that I make on sale right now at https://www.etsy.com/shop/workinhardhardware. or got some old school uncuts as well if you just wanna diy it 8) hand glued and pressed in Tempe, AZ.

I have a Lance Mountain Future Primitive reissue. It's fun but the lack of concave makes it kinda hard to skate. It's definitely a board I'd bring to a sesh, skate for 30 minutes, then hop back on my regular board.
Those kinds of shapes with modern concave are a different story though. I have the Welcome Miller Crossbone and it's super fun, and the modern concave makes it basically feel like a normal deck with a short nose.
Just my 2c, I think if you're looking for something more functional that you can skate like a "regular" board go for a modern concave, otherwise, if you're going strictly for old-school vibes grab a reissue.
-
Dogtown has a bunch of Pigs and Fishy Pigs that are made by PS Stix. The concave isn't exactly period accurate as those decks were pretty flat but I would it's pretty comparable to what Schmitt Stix was putting out around the same time. Deeper concave at the front bolts and the tiniest bit of upturn on the nose, right before it ends. In that era, I had a Bryce Kanights SS that was the same kind of concave and my next next deck was a Dogtown Dressen that was much flatter.

I totally agree with the concave thing.
I know if or when I stand on, or have a quick skate of one of those completely flat boards, I give it back fairly soon after riding it, but anything with a slightly more normal / modern concave, even some pig shaped boards with super mellow concave as a couple I have skated, they just feel so much more comfortable and easy to skate as per usual.
That said, I guess there would be people who skate the pig exactly as it was back in the day and who wouldn't change a thing, but I still am amazed at what we all did back then, or more so what those pro dudes did back then.
The well used old reissues of the Lance, Cab and McGill decks I have from swaps and trades don't get skated at all, even though sometimes I get them down and have a stand on them, but then put them back up and grab something like the Black Label Rat Trap Mountain board as a great cruiser that can still be skated like normal if needed.
I often see people buying these old reissues to build up as per the one they had when they were a kid or the one they could never get, but I don't really see them being skated a whole lot either, with so many of those boards going up for sale the next time a big bill comes up or something changes and they need to get rid of things.
As long as people are still buying them, there will definitely be a market for them, but there sure have been some amazing bargains out there from people having to sell things quickly from time to time as well.
-
Yeah I ended up getting a reissue and it sucked without concave. Skate it once and that was enough.
I'd still be into a pig with some modern concave, but I got plenty to skate now so I'm in no rush.
