I'm really not trying to become the contest czar of slap but I didn't see a topic yet and I do so enjoy slaps eloquent critiques of competitions.

I feel I'm also becoming the contest dork guy so here's my input.
Hate all the courses they've made this year. Just design half a park then mirror it. Also always basically a big set of stairs.
I predict funa will get robbed in the women's again. Every sls and Olympics she does something that gets scored way lower than it probably should and someone else does some sketchy shit and gets scored really highly.
-
They score rail tricks so high that’s all anyone tries.
It was sick seeing p-rod switch tre the gap.
Wish someone like dilo could win off insane Manuel combos but once again Johnny long pinch is gunna win on the rail
-
the last couple courses I like a little better, simply because they aren't centered around the exact same big stair/rail combo they've been using for the last few years. This one does look a little small/unvaried though.
Judging yesterday was all over again yesterday though. Starting to believe in this conspiracy that cariuma skaters get a Lil score bump. AG should have definitely made the final, Carlos too. Mota really got boned by the judges with the Kickflip bsts shuv, think he paid the rookie tax on that one. Where's Joslin? did he see the course and say "nah. too small".
Sucks Duran didn't make finals, glad Samaria did though, she's killing it lately.
-
I'm just looking at a pic of the park waiting for it to start and it's basically a set of stairs with long mild kink rails with outrail thing.
There's two of the same (but mirrored) bump to rails and then in the other side just two flat ledges. If they just designed the things so they could be hit from both sides it could have more variety. Maybe a Manny pad (altho seems judges don't want tech stuff) or a wallride
Is Jacksonville where those brick quarterpipe are? Maybe build something that reps the town it's in.
I guess they want to streamline things for tv but the filming hasn't been great either. Maybe it will be better in the finals
-
seems like they always score the guys with 'uncool' sponsors really low to keep the nike/caruma(insert main sponsor here) champion narrative afloat..
-
Yo sick 5-0 over the cariuma gap
-
Promise I won't just do a running commentary but seems every single time there's been some technical issue. Seems there's no commentary coming thru, which Im actually liking.
Wish someone would teach samaria to skate a park tho. Has similar problem that Alexis used to have. Guess it barely matters now they only do one run.
-
the park looks fun after watching people skate it. def seems like if your on carcumbia you get an extra .5 or so on every run/trick
-
Samaria's Tre over the gap was sick. highlight so far. Leal killing it like always, can't imagine gapping to blunt at that age.
-
These commentators keep blowing it by not pronouncing Brazilian R's as H's.
-
Olympics are over. Fuck these flags off.

Judging today's been ok so far, no major disagreements from me, surprisingly.
Candy's, Keet and Roos are all getting better, the Dutch women are showing up strong these days. Do they have those skateboarding schools in Holland?
Yeah the SLS format really screws skaters who have that street mentality like Alexis, Samarria, Mariah. They're all prone to getting stuck committing to land a harder trick than necessary; they're not into 'strategy' but I appreciate that about them. Like Joslin in the men's comps, kind of an old school approach, just wanting to get the hammers people will remember. Wish every skate comp had a straight up best trick comp.
I'm really liking the women's comps lately, you can see the talent level rising with every event, they're catching up fast!
-
samarria was killing it!
only person I care about in the finals is Zigram. he's been on fire so i'd love to see a win

Not exactly a best trick but I think there is some bonus award for trick of the day. I guess if you knew you were losing its an incentive to still try something hard.
-
YouTube recommended the live stream of the qualifications so I watched a couple of minutes.
The format is strange they kept switching between the top 10 and top 20.
I did see Foy do a cool fakie 5-0 on that long kinked rail.
Then they told the story of some Cariuma kid and I lost attention.
-
Alex midlers looking like Milo Kerrigan
-
Love how they just cut away from everyone's favorite villain Jagger Eaton as his run is about to start, to a Mike V interview which is literally a Cariuma ad. He's talking about animal suede and the "interviewer" is asking him about the toe cap. How did this visual barf end up in the broadcast
-

I turn into the biggest sobbing fat baby when I watch the women's comps
It's truly a wonderful thing to watch
-
Roos got WAY better. Pamela killed it though.
Can’t help to admit that Midler is sending out some major prick vibes … more than Eaton.
That mike V ad was thrash. Looks like any generic skateshoe except with that horrible logo on it.
-
rayssa’s villain arc has begun.
I'd call her a hero for fucking around with that stupid Cariuma banner at the end.
-
Boycott this “presented by cariuma” bullshit.
-
Boys looking hella cute in their Cariuma shirts and Redbull hats
-
Rabelo got underscored for surrrrrre
-
SPOILER
Lucas gap out alley oop front 270 front board thing should of got scored higher. Sure jagger could of then landed his trick and the result end up the same but still

Damn it. SLS had me going for jah by the end of that just to prevent that Cariuma sweep. I don't like what I've become.

Well women's had no cariumass so there's that.
(Altho I can see Pamela Rosa swapping over if Nike doesn't do something real)

“Alex Midler feeling a bit under the weather”. What are the chances he’s rocking COVID? I only half pay attention to these events as the drone in the background, but can’t think of the announcers detailing any COVID policy in play. Also wouldn’t put it past Midler to be the type of SoCal bro who’s unvaccinated, a la catching it means he still shows heavy symptoms.

he definitely seems like the type of narcissist not get a shot and compete in contests with covid.
anyway, that disgusting interview w mike v that turned into a cariuma infomercial made me sick

Rabelo got robbed
Jagger’s run was v good tricks but I knew what he was gonna do before he started. Talented but hideous

I don't think he said it in the finals but every time Rowley said "nollie Cab" I wanted to flip the table he was sitting at
This is coming from someone who really likes Geoff's commentating

They booed Nyjah for that, but Kelvin had already did it. And Nyjah scored way higher than kelvins. 8.8 vs 9.2

rabelos last trick was certainly underscored

That moment and Midler throwing his board down on the deck and immediately burying his head in a banner on the fence in frustration were the only saving graces of an event that's become hard to watch. People really did skate more of the course years ago, but like everyone has said already it's become all about the main big rail every time. Bunch of Red Bull and Cariuma logos flying around with air pods. Doing the same tricks.
-
These are always a bummer. Dudes like Carlos Ribeiro and Vincent Milou who are actually a pleasure to watch skate in terms of style get bumped out by the Cariuma contest guys and everyone pulls out their formulaic and predictable contest winning tricks.

I was at this contest. I watched warm up and practice. For the most part, people who won, in women’s in men’s did all their tricks during warm up and had them pretty dialed.
Rosa’s gap smith and Momiji big spin front board were first try of the day.

I was there as well. I was hoping to see those guys along with P Rod in the finals. They all skated amazingly and even got great scores but the competition was fierce and they didn’t make the top 4. Jagger has pretty much all those tricks he does on lock every try. It’s impressive but obviously doesn’t have the best style. It was awesome seeing the women skate so well. Really wanted Samarria to land the Nollie heel. Surprised Rayssa didn’t land her last 2 tricks. Overall the contest was pretty amazing to watch in person. And downtown Jacksonville has so many skate spots, it was like one huge session there too with all the skaters in the area. The SLS course could’ve been a little better but I liked watching the gap outs, double kinks and the floating rail over the 1/4 was a cool touch. Only a few people skated it. And kinda random but did Anybody else see Weck and Paul Hart pull up in a big center console boat on the river? He was walking around the back after the contest.
-
Lucas was underscored like crazy. I imagine if jagger or nyjah had done that last trick that lucas did they would have been scored way higher. Jagger is hard on the eyes and the constant queuing up his song before he goes is the second most annoying thing of the day, next to pamela clapping for herself
-
Mike V's speech at the end gave me home shopping experience
-
I dunno if they showed it on stream, but Alex Midler and Jagger Eaton smacked into each other pretty hard. I didn't have the best view of it but Jagger was holding his ribs.
Midler was fucking charging, dude, especially in practice. Some dude next to me was like "Bro that guy is a time bomb" and I guess he was right. at the end of the day he was holding his ribs. He fell pretty hard a bunch of times.
When the Brazilians got a 0.0 for not rolling away clean on a trick, the whole place boo'd so loud!
I'm pretty sure they cut away from that. Announcer was like - "GUYS, I KNOW ABOUT A CONTEST MAKE BUT THIS ISN'T TAMPA, THIS IS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS" or something to that effect. I think part of the problem was that you couldn't really see people closest to the wall skating from the main seating area.
There were so many hometown heroes at the event. People fawning over Neal Mims and Cairo Foster (who lived in jax maybe a year?)
Also downtown Jax is a ghost town on the weekends and kids were skating fucking everywhere and nobody was kicking them out.
Overall I didn't hate it.
-
rayssa’s villain arc has begun.
foreal! Did y’all see her in the best trick? She like pushed that girls head down before her score was announced cuz she knew she getting bumped up to first. Lol

Yeah that's why I usually prefer watching qualifying over finals. There's always better vibes, more comradery. way more variety too. Rosa's not my fav but she's hella solid, she's def got her grinds on lock, wish she and Roos would start working more flip tricks into their bag but they're still young and improving. Carlos and Vincent are a lot of fun to watch in competitions, definitely some improv going on.
I hate to say it but Roos and Lucas are two Cariuma riders I can't help but like; Roos has some real power in her skating and Lucas skates recklessly fast. They were both shoe sponsorless at the Olympics so I bet Cariuma made some really hard to turn down offers since they're up and comers.
It was funny to see Jah land the trick Midler was trying first try while Midler was destroying himself for it. The one and only thing I like about seeing folks try similar tricks is seeing the contrast in styles, like jah always appears practically weightless while Midler looks like a bag of bricks throwing itself around out there.
From what I gather Samarria didn't land that Tre to flat until the finals, just the kickflip in practice, had to feel dope.
Pretty sure I saw Cairo Foster clap for everyone but Jagger throughout the event, I found a little joy in that.

shane trying that switch big back tail 3 fucking times is the dumbest shit I've ever seen. MOVE ON

he got it 2nd try the day before. i think wasnt it just regular bigspin back tail? cant remember. i think that trick is fairly go-to for him though and was kind of the points he was going to need to place 1st, and i dont think he cared about finishing 2nd or 3rd too much. i think he was like dead set on doing those 2 tricks after he completed the 9.5 run. really was a shame he couldnt put that together was sick seeing him win tampa.

he's sponsored by GUCCI. they already know he sick

I guess it's done for the year so it doesn't matter but I forgot to mention when I was complaining about the courses they need to stop doing these optical illusion rails.
By pushing the rails back so they start well before the top step or making them a gap out it kind of hides that they are only shin high.
Which of course for a regular person would make it easier but it seems like they often pop too big/come down too hard. Probably from being used to skating actual decent sized rails
-
i thought it was kind of wild Pamela Rosa waxed the rail ! seems like last thing id want to do lol

I think it was ok because there was a bigger and smaller side, which is why jah got scored higher for the (kf back lip??? Hard to remember)

IDK it is Florida so it's like the most open place on the planet but I feel like Covid is maybe the one thing they would've tested him for.
Maybe an event planner in Florida can comment on the rules of such events like this
-
on the real tho Aurelien in qualifiers skated the best of anyone the entire weekend and didn't end up in the finals.
its nearly impossible to get into the finals if you're in heat 1. that seems like a huge issue with the contest format over pretty much everything.

Lucas got robbed.
Nyjah did a dick move.
Carlos ribiero had the best run.
Jagger is corny.
anyway, it was funny seeing shane being a bit cynical about it

Makes me wonder why Shane even bothers anymore. I guess potential prize money is still money even if its way down from years ago.
Feel bad for Andrew cannon tho I think he got a few of these not just "yes anding" interviews plus the Mike v infomercial then asking Pam Rosa a bunch of stuff only for her to not speak English

there seemed to be a noticeable decrease in shirt lifting this go round. not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but jagger absolutely lionized that course

I'd heard travel restrictions kept him out of the previous events so maybe he didn't qualify for the super crown based on SLS goofy points system? Where was Joslin though, dude was in 6th going into the weekend. Did he ever say anything about it via social media?
I think I've found something to like about Yager after all; the constant flashing of his supreme undies. Hear me out here. By trying to associate himself with Supreme he has to be doing irreversible damage to the brands perceived cool-factor which could possibly be signaling the brands impending downfall.
