Do you have feelings about the mixing of certain brands?
I'm not talking about a brand that is inherently abominable to you no matter what it was on.
I'm asking if there is such a thing as two legit brands that you can't mix, like "you can't have ______ trucks on _______ boards," etc.
Is that a thing to you?
Was that a thing when you were alive?
(not asking about grip tape)
-
Adidas track pants and Nike/Vans shoes is a stupid look that I see a lot.
-
Tensors or Ventures on p much anything.
Bones wheels need to go just in general.
Clashing brands in general are a personal nah. (i.e. Emerica shirt while wearing Converse, Ricta beanie with Spitfire wheels etc.)
Only thing I could get down with (maybe) is stuff from the same distribution.
-

this is about the only one I can think of, but when theyre rocking adidas pants and jacket or hat but not adidas shoes, I kinda like it. it's a middle finger type of outfit
-

Nike x Adidas in general is disgusting and deserves to be clowned tbh. We used to call that "Cross Contamination".
-
I take it to an extreme point…I could never skate an NHS deck with Ventures or any DLX deck without Spitfires.
Clashing shoe company logos are a no-no as well, even if you’re Cristiano Ronaldo playing in Nike boots with and Adidas logo on your Man U jersey (the big Chevy logo is terrible too).
-
Weirdly always had a shitty experience when riding a dlx board with thunders even tho you'd think they'd always go together well.
To me its less about brands but more the actual items not going together. Probably an age thing but jeans and runners/tech shoes don't go together for me.
-
Clashing brands with clothes and shoes is a definite no-no for myself, but as far as clashing brands on a board I can't be bothered to take it that deep.

See, this is what I'm asking about.
Are there distribution lines?
And for that matter were / are there lines drawn based on coasts?

i feel the hate for mixing nike and addias, it just looks off, but i've never really got people who're bother by mixing dickies and carhatt, unless you're sponsored i don't see why'd you'd give a fuck.
x trucks on x board or anything like that doesn't bother me, i just get whatever my local shop has in that fits what i want. stickers on the other hand i'm really anal about, i never put footwear stickers on my deck incase i change shoes while skating the deck.
-
For a lot of us who are lucky enough to have amazing friends that we support sometimes you get caught mixing brands
-
imagine wearing a ricta beanie
imagine buying wheels from NHS and you don't pick OJ or SB

@PatrickSkateman bring up and interesting one because that is literally the one thing in regards to hardgoods...like you cannot picture someone on a Creature with Ventures unless its like a little kid confused first setup.
That being said, you know that when Seek ended and Flo and Alex got on Santa Cruz, they were skating Venture Lows. I know Venture was at Streetcorner then, but still...
Also regarding NHS deck riders on non-NHS trucks.: I have had a suspicion that Santa Cruz stopped promoting Tom Remillard because he was on Ace. I realized there are MANY other factors at play, but to me it seems like he broke an unspoken taboo and got shelved for it.

depends on how much said brands are paying me

Yeah, exactly haha. Not once have I chastised myself for mixing distributions on a setup. Like, "What the hell is wrong with me, mixing NHS with DLX!?"
I'll rock a 151 board with Gullwing trucks and Dial Tone wheels, I don't give a fuck as long as it skates well haha.
-

I mix Dickies & Carhartt all the time, haha, pretty hard not to mix anything with Dickies as they take up 50% of my wardrobe. Always been a big Dickies guy, even when I didn't skate.

One big no-no combo for me personally is pairing Ricta wheels with anything at all.
-
What about Huf and Dickies?
I like both. Huf makes the nicer hoodies but Dickes makes the nicer pants.
-

they have a lot of heavy hitters on their team that could easily ride for an objectively better wheel company.
i do miss the pj ladd ricta days.

I know. I ripped my drawers at the park the other day and my friend ran to his car and hooked it up with to his car and hooked it with some slighty used POLO tightr whities. The homie.
-
i have this thing where if i ever wear a printed t-shirt it's a board company (don't care if it matches my deck)/shop shirt, i could do spitfire or ace (though i don't like their clothes) because that's the stuff i skate. even pros used to wear different board companies shirts while being pro for one of them. it's weird because i really want a venture awake tee but i can't get myself to buy one because i skate ace trucks lol. i would also never wear a shoe company t-shirt or anything with a logo or a spellout print of any clothing company (lil tags like carhartt, dickies or levis are ok but never a print). if you have board company wheels at least make it the same company as your deck but i don't see people skating those too often. minilogo is an exception because i don't treat it as a real "board brand", i look at it as a "affordable skateboard hardware that isn't complete shit" brand
-
I noticed a few weeks ago I was wearing vans socks and dunks (calf high and shorts), I was in work and a bit hungover. I went straight home after work haha.
I can't put other deck brand stickers on a different brand deck. Like a real sticker on a polar deck. I always do a grip-less strip on the topside and stickers under the gap
-
its kinda shilly to care too much about brands and branding idk

Not sure how that relates to Ventures on a Creature or even is a clash of brands since one of Zero's flagship riders did it at their peak popularity. It is gross, though, so I will give you that.

Creature hesh venture fresh. Zero hesh tensor fresh. At the time It felt like a clear divide between the two.

At this point I just wear whatever because it's just going to get dirty and rip. Just as long as the colors aren't conflicting. That's just me.

Unfortunately Ventures are probably the perfect truck on those short wheelbase Creature Stumps
-
I could never clash anything. It’s always bothered me. I can’t even get myself to try new trucks I want to try (the new royals for example) because I have a handful of thunder shirts and a thunder hat that I don’t want to stop wearing. Yes. I can’t consciously wear a thunder shirt while skating another brand trucks.
-
i usually remove any non embroided logos on pants unless i got a set fit for em, cant mix adidas n nike logos, but aside from adida track pant, anything beside nike works, adidas track pant with adida shoes is just too much too, too uniform that it clashes. idc wat shoes beside nike, they work wit adida pants
-
I used to be pretty disrespectful about this. I've skated a curb in adidas track pants and new balance shoes. Went skating in a vans anti hero shirt while wearing new balance shoes.
-
Back in the day You’d never mix Powell wheels with a Santa Cruz board, or vice versa. So I understand why people feel this way about clothes too.
But ultimately, we are all acting like the pawns capitalism raised us to be, acting like sporting clothing with one logo means you can’t wear another. It’s a fucked up kind of Stockholm syndrome.
-
It’s not that I dislike mixing certain brands on my setup, but I really DO like pairing certain brands together that you’d typically think of going together.
At the moment I’m thinking about wheels, I’m currently skating a Toy Machine and I really want some fuckin Pig wheels. Already thinking ahead to the Creature I’ll be skating next and I can’t shake the urge to get some OJ’s because I’m curious about a certain wheel I’ve never tried and I’ll probably justify buying some I don’t need because of it…
Clothing wise I feel very awkward wearing a brand that’s not currently on my setup, but I’ll do it because I skate different shit all the time.

I noticed that Tom Asta only has like one pro model every other quarter. He should have like 3 every drop.
The weirdest brand no-no was Mike York on Dekline and Pig while riding for Chocolate.
But who am I to judge? I’ve worn Polar socks with a Brooks Brothers suit before.

thats why you just dont wear shit with big logos and you can get away with it. its just certain brands like Nike and Adidas are all about massive massive logoing for the most part so there is no way to unsee that and its just awful. so yeah when you have cross contamination going on its gross you are just hit with too much clashing imagery. trying to do too much

A few years ago I got a black Nike SB hoodie thinking that dunks would be easy to come by, like the plain ass ones. Then Travis Scott brought the hypebeasts, dunks became scarce and the ones I had died, and I wore mostly adidas while that hoodie collects dust.

Manitoba so always flown over. I haven't been to Toronto in years, but Montreal women are pretty incredible, another aspect the prairies lack.

I have a dark green shirt that say adidas basketball really big that I have always loved skating in because of the color regardless of whatever shoes I'm wearing.
I'm glad I'm not that hung up over branding.
It reminds me of my mother in law that can't buy non-big brand food. I buy it to eat not complicate my shopping experience. It's clothes. I bought it to wear not to agonize over.
-
I´m not going to lie, I have thought about this in the past but I honestly felt like an idiot for considering it. When you´re not paid to wear/skate certain brands it´s absolute brainwash in my opinion.
-
I’m glad I don’t suffer from this fashion related malady, but on the other side of the clashing scale is coordinating, and one thing I actively avoid is doubling down on branding/logos. Example: I won’t be caught wearing a Spitfire cap along with a Spitfire frock.
There are only a couple/few brands I am even capable of making this mis-step with thanks to a varied wardrobe, but I avoid doing so like it’s COVID. Not tryna be somebody’s promo-bot any more than I already am.
-
i used to think that when i was a teenager, but now i think it's stupid to stress out about this. it has more to do with coolness norms than any reason. for sure some people just don't have consistent taste and make combos look weird or it makes them look like they don't know what they are into. but for someone who's only about function and found something that works for them that's irrelevant. so this is strictly an aesthetics/culture/what'scool type question. there is no real reason to not mix tensors with spits and a f.a. deck and dvs shoes if those work best for you, even if everyone wants you to skate ace and nike blazers instead so you look in tune.
if you put too much care into aesthetics or scene points you ultimately lock yourself out of choices. i'm not saying these are unimportant, i love fashion and i want my skateboards to fit my personal aesthetic as well, but i can't possibly know if that dumbass grindking truck wouldn't actually work better for me without trying.
your setup or kit should just be consistent for you, i think it's irrelevant if it clashes for everyone else. sometimes that is also really interesting. like when you see someone rep an unlikely company. like an actual cool skater on osiris or something.
-
The not wearing Nike + Adidas at the same time is equivalent to annoying ass lil kids who only eat Tyson nuggets and default to hating foods they've never even tried it. Unless both pieces have large, excessive text I don't see the point in being all superstitious.
Like bro you going to let a check mark and stripes (probably the most basic geometry logos) hold you back?
They're basically the same thing in terms of quality and product offerings.
Aesthetic choices should be rooted in color harmony and silhouettes/proportion as opposed to projection
-
cant have two brands that make the same product together
-
Brand loyalty is beyond stupid and know I think less of any of you who display it.

At some point, I mixed truck parts out of necessity (e.g., Indy baseplate with venture hanger). The strangest one was Tracker hanger with Indy baseplate. Wouldn't recommend it.
-

It is relatively easy to avoid the logo clashing while meeting those standards. I would argue that the logos distract from those other aspects due to the association people have with the brands. In a vacuum, I would agree with your statement.

I still can’t get myself to put an Anti Hero on Ventures,
even though I know it’s fine.
I think of it like an outfit mullet, like I didn’t pay attention to detail planning my outfit.
Like wearing a Cannibal Corpse shirt with Flu Game Jordans.
-
i don't *actually* care, obviously, but matching looks dummer than clashing
e.g. if i was to notice and think negatively of someone's outfit at all, i'd be more likely to think 'dude, chill they're not paying you' about someone wearing all adidas than look at someone wearing a mix of brands and think it was weird.
-

Was about to say that, I wear a jacket and shirt from the same brand and feel ridiculous, even with tiny logos
-
"And if you wear motherfucking fatigues and sneakers pussy, I’m bringing it to you."
-

No that would be a dope fit
-
Most skate brands just print their logo really big on a AAA tee, I'm not paying just to be a billboard. I have a few Polar hats and pants that I'll wear while skating a quasi board, the graphic is scratched off so noone can tell, even if they care. Can't wear polar jacket with the polar cap but it's fine with the pants because the pants logo isn't on display, you don't see it.
I wear a bit of Butter goods but they don't make shoes or boards so they're neutral, and make tees with dope music-based prints, and minimal branding. Everything else is carhartt, thrift shop stuff or music merch.
The only one i really consciously avoid is mismatched socks and shoes. No adidas socks with new balance etc.
-
Red Bull hat, Monster shirt, Dew stickers on a Darkstar complete, beleedat.

I love wearing Gilbert crocketts cuz usually am skating an alien workshop board and it feels so scandalous

Adidas track pants and Nike/Vans shoes is a stupid look that I see a lot.
Everyone knows that in the sweatshop those kids do the 3 stripe Adidas work on Tuesdays, and nike swoosh on Fridays... And these idiots dare to mix up those two brands
