Title: Petition to save Freedom Plaza/Pulaski
Post by: Sidewalk Funk. on March 10, 2022, 09:55:41 PM

https://www.change.org/p/council-of-the-district-of-columbia-help-us-save-freedom-plaza-in-washington-dc

"The Council of DC has plans of “eliminating & replacing” Freedom Plaza. Sign this petition to let them know where you stand! Freedom Plaza was renamed after the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and also holds his time capsule that isn’t to be opened until 2088. Not only is this space a National Park but a National Monument. People come from all over the world to see Freedom Plaza’s inlaid stone surface that depicts part of Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s plan for the city of Washington. Not only is it a one of a kind place on earth but it’s also a cultural melting pot and one of DC’s loudest places to make your voices heard. With protests, live music, dance, unicycle games of hockey, Go-Go’s, food trucks (bbq cook offs), also a long-standing home of DC’s skateboarding scene, and so much more. We need your help to let the Council members know that this monument needs more love, support, and care! Instead of “eliminating & replacing” such an important piece of history! Please Sign! Thank you!"

There's gonna be hella people at Indiana if pulaski gets shut down. Usually where I go if it's too packed at pulaski. Bummer, we need people that live in the DC zip code and surrounding areas to sign. I just sent this to my homies up there.

Just signed it...Pulaski is such a sick spot and definitely needs to remain the life blood of the DC skate scene.

Hard to believe they would want to destroy it. So much history there besides the legend status to skateboarders. That plaza is a true work of art and a magical place to set foot in.

Would be a shame to see it go. Pulaski and Muni have to be the last standing of the iconic plaza/ledge spots from the 90's that still stand in close to their original form in the States given what has happened to Love, Santa Monica Courthouse, EMB, and Pier 7.

The entitlement and arrogance of middle-management politician types trying to pad their resumes knows no bounds

Saw a photo today and it looked like the ledges were in the process of being skatestopped. Any DC locals on here have additional info?

Plus the fact that this is federal land named after MLK Jr tells me all I need to know about why this administration wants to tear it down.

This was done under Trump's Executive Order 14252, "Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful". Malcolm X Park fountains are also on the list for renovations to "showcase beautiful, clean, and safe public spaces, in which residents, commuters, and tourists feel safe at all hours". So that spot is probably going to skate stopped as well

A statue of Caesar Rodney, a plantation owner of nearly 200 slaves, is set to be installed in Pulaski for America’s 250th anniversary. In case you're unaware, the National Park Service under Trump has been removing all exhibits that say anything about slavery, climate change, or violence against Native Americans in an effort to rewrite American history

You can read more about it here:

As if another reason were needed, but add this to the list of pure shit this jerk off has pulled & it’s still, always & forever, fuck Donny Trump right in his disgusting lie-hole, all day long.

Gross, looks like the wall and the gap to stairs are still there, not sure if they will be skateable but they still there

Had a chance to walk around at night two or three weeks ago.

Everything is still there. And everything is refurbished. Wall, gap, etc. However, everything is skate stopped. All four white walls have stoppers that look like silver superballs on each side. All ledges and outledges around entire perimeter are skatestopped with run of the mill skinny stoppers. If you want to get buck, planters are still untouched.

There is varying degrees of optimism and pessimism in the local community.

We'll see what happens.
