Title: century xtreme revival?
Post by: tapwaterking on March 31, 2022, 10:24:11 AM
I remember reading or hearing a while ago that the xtreme would be rebooted in limited numbers similar to the mk1. Has anyone heard anything about that as of late? Or any rumors etc? Im absolutely down bad with this opteka on my hmc and need a glimmer of hope that doesnt cost 8k

If they even do re-release the xtreme a bunch of fucking dorks like vxMarket will buy all of them and re-sell them for an insane amount.

what's even more messed up is they've given those resellers a legit platform and from what i've read, the lens will be distributed through the resellers if/when launched -_-

sketchy... i signed up for all the sites and email lists and they kept pointing me to other sites and email lists to get on...

Eventually it got to the point where the person emailing me told me to just wait, as the lense was getting released through @deathlens_fisheye_sales instagram -_-, felt super fishy.

I talked to Deathlens dude on the phone the other day and he confirmed the MK1 reissue is definitely happening. He had to pay for the entire batch up front over a year ago. There's been production pictures on Instagram lately.

On the original topic, one of my friends told me a third party lens company reverse engineered the exact specs of the Xtreme and were gathering funds to make some. He didn't have the name of the company, so I'm not sure who it is. Also, not sure if this is true or not.

^^ Fingers crossed that third party manufacturer gets it right cause there's been over a year of radio silence from this project: https://www.instagram.com/centuryxtremelens/

My xtreme got stolen in 2019, and I was dumb enough to pass on the opportunity to buy a slightly scuffed one for $1500 afterwards  :-[

Since then I've just been using the opteka and stretching it in AE using the Optics Compensation effect–– hopefully some of you can find this technique useful

Still no signs of life from the @centuryxtremelens project...

Here's a better demo of what After Effects can do with HPX+Opteka footage:

I shot this in 1080/30p at 1/120s f/6.8  ––  the higher the f-stop, the sharper the image stays towards the edges.

This looks so good! Could the same work with an Opteka 72mm fisheye?

what we really need is a clone lens like the mk2 clones. or something close

Doesn’t it make sense at some point to just get a DSLR/mirrorless fisheye setup? I don’t know how much xtremes go for but I am sure you could get a Gh2 or gh3 with a canon 8-15 and speedbooster. I know it isn’t as straight forward and the look changes. Maybe the image could be changed in post to fit the hvx or hpx footage.

not doable. the look differs too much.

this. could be a clone made for tinier more recent cameras too. It would make it less expensive to produce too.

Any clue on settings like this for an HVX200? Tried matching your settings but it was a very different look. Would love to try out these after effects on some old footy but i just couldnt seem to figure it out myself.

hvx200 has a slightly less wide lens, plus he had a stepup ring which makes it further away (more vig). seems like maybe you could reduce the scale to 100 instead of 110. if thats not enough then mess with FOV.

@green - any reason you went with 62mm specifically? Is it substantially wider than the 72mm? Always wondered if the various opteka lenses are the same from 52-82, just a different opening.

they're all clones of the MK2 lens just with different thread sizes

I definitely have to zoom if further with the 52 compared with the 72…

yes because you've spaced the lens out with an adapter ring. the optics are still the same.

I am also interested in this.
So, the back element of the opteka is the same size for all fisheye thread sizes (52mm, 58mm, 67mm and 72mm)?
Would I get the same image using a 72mm to 72mm spacer + the 72mm fisheye version than with a 72mm to 52mm adapater + the 52mm fisheye version? (provided that the back element of the fisheye ends up at the same distance for both cases)

should be the case, they're all the same glass, just different housings. so only distance from the lens (using spacers/adapters), and the stock lens' focal length should matter.

they should make a tiny version of the xtreme

cheaper / lighter / for cameras less big and more modern

yes last time i checked. same sensor, but HPX can pull out wider. no A is the old model and should be avoided if possible.

I have the no A model and really, it looks exactly the same. The only thing is that is slightly less wider and it's worse at night but other than that there's really no difference. I don't know with the Xtreme tho, since I don't have one.

I was just wondering, by the time the Xtreme is re-issued (if it's ever re-issued, because at this moment in time it seems to be taking overly long to get the process moving...) are people even going to care as much? I mean, sure - if they make a run of 100 they'll sell pretty fast (and hopefully not to Deathlens Fisheye Seller or any of those dudes who hike the price up by 800%)

With the market going down the Sony FS5/FX6 route, with the Canon 8mm lenses, which, love or hate the vig is evidently becoming the standard in skateboarding videography - are people honestly going to care about the re-issue of the xtreme? Personally, I would if they where lighter on a smaller camera because overall, for the size of the HPX's etc, the image quality isn't all that and they're only made better by the Xtreme, which I understand is why people hang onto the VX series so much, purely for the joy of using the MK1.

It's clear that the HPX/Xtreme is becoming the new VX/MK1 and with good reason as they've both dominated and became the norm. If an Xtreme is re-issued for a fair market price (I think the original run on BH Video where around £2.5/3k), then it might be worth getting one just in case you end up using it again in the future.

Does anyone know what the average price for a MK1 was? I'm not talking it's original price upon release which I'm sure was thousands, but a few years later. I used to see them sell in pristine condition with no scratches for £5-800, now you can't find an unscratched one for under £2000.

Right now, you can buy Sabotage Ryans absolutely fucking battered and unusable MK1 for only $2,280.00. What a steal.

Unless a company in the cinema camera world makes a 16x9 shaped fisheye, the Xtreme will always look better. If it's image quality people are concerned about with the hpx170 then you could always get a AC160 for 1080 60p.

I don't really think the industry is moving towards the Sony FS models. Yes, there are a few companies that use that camera but really, most of the brands/filmmakers are still using the classic HPX/Xtreme, which I personally love.
