I scanned and posted the article in Thrasher that covered the Fourstar tour that produced the Super Champion Funzone video. The link is posted below.

So sick, have seen the video so many times, love the story about Rickk’s lost tape in spite of Rip’s efforts, and never knew about PJ getting knocked out. I think Meza said, in his heckride maybe, that Gonz was there only one day in Japan, he’s the ultimate footage machine

Endlessly rewatchable and quotable, I was lucky to pick up an old Super Champion Funzone t-shirt on TGM a year back on deadstock.

Man went all the way to Japan just to eat McDonald’s every few days, smh
-
Such a great watch. Some legends in their prime. I could definitely do without all the clueless white guys in Japan being loud cliches. I forgot Rip was in this. That guy seriously knows everybody.

Watched the DVD countless times… all time great soundtrack. The extra features, and the extra BA part. Been wanting to go to Tokyo ever since seeing it…

Both are good videos to have on in the background while doing chores. The soundtrack is quintessential 2000s stuff so heavy dose of nostalgia for me.

Not directly related but on a trip to bcn a few years ago one of my friends met this japanese dude outside of a bar sitting on his board. We talked about linking up and going to some spots the next day but didnt expect him to come through since we were all pretty drunk. The next day he showed up and we had a big session hitting various spots by metro, we also knew his name was Rip and he seemed familiar. It wasn´t until we were back when we found out who he was. Some stuff ended up in the friends part of this old video here (2:20 mark):

I am in a place with slow internet right now. I this the Four Star tour video where Mark G has that monologue about "zootzootter" (or something like that)
"So I said hey! Zootzootter!"

zoot suiter

I always thought it was interesting that Super Champion Funzone said "Filmed on Panasonic Cameras". very cool to have a full vid that wasn't on VX around 2005.

Seeing Rip outside a Fourstar video is rad, homie video is the shit too. Characteristic 2000s video with skinny jeans + Adidas Busenitz and bank 5-0s to fakie.
-
I never realized Rip was a skater, didn’t realize he knew who Four Star etc were, but in hindsight it seems obvious that was the case

I want someone to do a follow up interview with Rip, he moved to America but what has he been up to these days.
-
I rewatched the Extras in wake of all the revelations in this thread. Love how strong this video’s B-sides are…

Does anyone know what trick(s) Guy did in the clip that was lost on the taken tape?
-
He does frontside nosegrind pop out across that turquoise? ledge in the main video… might’ve been something on that..
Guess I’ll have to watch it again
-
Rip is a friend of a friend type dude, I’ve sessioned with him a bunch, he kinda shreds bowls like good style and everything.
He’s fun to kick it with and super funny guy.
I think he’s a personal chef for that pro surfer dude Rob Machado.
Last time I saw him was randomly at the Venice park like 5 years ago he was kicking it with Eric Dressen.

Trigger warning:
I loved this tour video when it came out. Nowadays it's hard to watch for me. The behaviour of the crew is disrespectfull and japanese people are not portrayed in a nice way.

Yeah, I felt the same. But its been 17 years. Times have changed. Also, 17 years before 2005, was 1988… in Neil Blender’s raw Speed Freaks tapes, Tony Roberts the filmer mocks a Japanese toy shop owner in a similar way.
Should they’ve known better? For sure. Is it okay by today’s standards? Fuck no. But, for me at least, I won’t let it completely soil my memory or enjoyment of such outstanding content.

I think crail was doing. a bunch of work with Panasonic at the time. They had some handycams that actually held their own for a bit. I ended up buying one of the older ones (The pvgs320 I think) and it was decent. Taught me everything I know about cameras.

Spraying soap into a friends eyes is a shit thing to do, even if Rip seemed to be having fun with it.

Didnt Crail have a black eye club where they punched each other in the face? Spike, Rickk and that crew seem to perpetrate the kind of mayhem that makes for compelling content but I wouldnt personally want to be involved in, even if it seems fun to most
