Title: When/why/how did you stop liking your "favorite" company?
Post by: SilentBob on December 28, 2022, 01:04:02 PM
Looking back, I was all about Plan B. Not the original, the revival with in the mid-2000s
Lost interest after True cuz my favourites left (Wenning, Rodriguez, Gallant) along with no Ladd, Colin, D-Way part.
Although guys like Torey, Ryan and Joslin killed it.
And Now I wouldn't skate a deck unless it was free.

How about y'all?

Lmfao, Plan B revival was your choice? Holy shit.

Can't really say shit myself, though. I used to LOVE Almost but then I turned 13.

Almost was my favourite for a while in the 2000s, their videos are still the ones I remember best. Suppose I lost interest when the likes of Haslam and a few others left. Now Dilo is the only one I can name off the top of my head.

Shoe company, one of the guys who runs it is transphobic and overall seems like a dick. I didn't know this til I was pretty enamored with the gear and had a bunch. Kinda sucks, don't feel like I can rep it anymore.

it was Flip when I was an adult, but everybody quit or got too old

it’s been Creature for 12 or so years and I’m still into it

Independent moving production to china bummed me out pretty hard. Part of me gets it because obviously manufacturing anything in USA is incredibly expensive but I would have paid more knowing that they were being manufactured in the USA and the company was supporting American workers. They could have had a sick market advantage being the only American-made truck company too.

Love love loved baker 3 era Baker for the skating of course, but also very much so for the hijinks. When I grew out of the latter, I mostly moved on. Cool to see the company doing good stuff now, though.

Emerica and Baker went from a classy and relatively clean hollywood hipster punk aestetic (which I loved when I was younger) to this weird shaggy SoCal rock n roll/ stonerrock vibe.
I don't judge the direction, they just kind of lost me along the way.

Thunder and Venture are both made in USA. They just can’t advertise it because not every part is USA made. Pretty sure all the trucks are poured at Ermico though. I think even the bushings?

FA/Hockey because their shapes and graphics didn’t fit my style.

Thunder trucks was once my favorite but I’ve bounced between Aces and Thunder due to the hangar design.
I’ve been skating Ace trucks 7 years straight and haven’t changed

Both éS and Flip followed similar paths.  At their heights (menikmati and sorry years) they had amazing teams and put out videos that impacted me a lot at the time.  After they hit their peak a couple people left and their brand directions got weird. They both appeared to start going after the “kid” market instead of evolving with the original audience that they gained.  It’s also funny that in both cases French Fred was the guy behind the videos.

When companies in skateboarding reach their peak they usually fall hard afterward.  Crailtap was similar..

Flip - PJ on , Arto/Appleyard leaving (Really Sorry to Extremely Sorry era)

Liked it being this thing for non-Americans to have and PJ didn’t really add to the vibe of the place (even though I was a huge fan) other than being a good skater on arguably the best team.  Then the sorry guys started leaving and getting replaced by little kids.

I’ll agree. Seems like gonz backed off after van passed. Seems like the dudes put on had that krooked thing about them vouched got mark but now it’s dlx dumping grounds

Most the gonz art is forged (skateshop series during the pandemic) or doctored together by the dlx art team. Still a good team ran by solid people but lots it’s zest imo

Stereo comeback was cool even into the ride channel years but just got to the point of what even is this. Yoshi, Tommy Flynn, hoffart all real good skaters but not what I'm personally into and not what I think of with stereo. (Altho Dustin dollin actually went pro for stereo so maybe that's actually their thing)

Yea this is the one for me. Stay Gold pretty much defined my highschool years but now I get bummed watching those dudes skate. That first Emerica full length after Reynolds left bummed me the fuck out for weeks. The company just feels so dead these days. Even Jon Dickson cant carry the team.

Chocolate

Dropped an exciting teaser for Pretty Sweet just for the video to come out with not a single Pops trick, Calloway trick, not enough Castillo clips, Eldy re edit was a full part but hardly any of it in the video etc.

Pretty Sweet solidified the thought that my heroes were done

Big fan of their team now, but not sure how likely i am to watch that last video again

Popwar was tight!

My pick is Toy Machine. Somewhere along the line during my hiatus Ed became more hands off, and got even fatter, and the graphics look like they’re done by some design firm.

Tum Yeto in general has kinda taken a dive in the last decade. It’s sad to see.

Alva was my favorite company by far. Zorlac & Skull Skates might be tied for 2nd. I think I had 2 each of the Bill Danforth, Fred Smith & Chris Cook. Then I stopped skating for 31 years. Back at it for a little over a year. Still trying to find a favorite company.

I grew up so attachment to certain brands just naturally faded. Obviously, the changing of the guard at Crail was a rough transition. Crail/Sovereign Sect were my two brands/companies growing up. I stopped caring about Alien once they killed off the team, although I do love Joey O'Brien's skating. I never stopped liking Habitat, Chocolate, and Girl, but obviously, I don't hold them in the same regard as before.

The idea of taking these superstar skateboarders from other companies, again, but this time producing only horrible graphics and maybe a good individual part every five years sounds great.
I'm surprised they're still around.

I thought they were wack but now that they've become a refuge for euro pros like Youness or Max Geronzi, i find them ok.
I mean, the graphics massively suck, though...

Althoug, i like that they supported Cooper Wilt. His Transworld part was amazing...

to my fortune none of their product was available at my country so it kept me dreaming for a few years since i got that bootleg sorry vhs copy in the mail with the board i bought in late 2002
aples was my man, boulala was fun, salabanzi an inspiration, geoff was raw and arto was simply too good
but then it took too long after really sorry to release shit

boulala/shane cross closed the deal for me, he was so damn good so young.

by the time extremely sorry came out it was too damn late and the final product was too damn bad, and as much I loved appleyard I knew that footy was 5 years old  ;D
luan and the new kids tried but it wasn't the same, golden years went by

Loved Flip as a kid, Sorry/Really Sorry Era. I remember watching those videos over and over, even all the extras...influenced my music taste massively too. My first 'proper' board was a blue PJ Ladd board with an owl on it...would only wear Rowley Vans etc etc.

That era of Flip is still great to watch now but maybe 15-16 I lost interest and discovered Blueprint and began a journey of Danny Brady cosplay, replaced Motorhead with Belle and Sebastian and never jumped down anything ever again.

As a kid, emerica/baker from this is skateboarding to baker 3. Es/Flip menikmati to really sorry.

However as emerica/baker transitioned to the brand for stoner rock loving base jumpers from San Diego, I was out. I would probably still skate emericas as they seem like they keep a solid rotation of supportive cupsoles in the catalog.

I think Baker is doing cool shit now. I’m hoping emerica can revive themselves a little bit in the future. The Made days had them on the right track. Hsu and Spanly are my favorites. I would heavily back whatever company they ever do together.

Some of my favorite skaters are on Hockey but I just can’t do the giant square nose decks anymore (I understand the 8.44 is a normal shape - not enough options).  Don’t think those shapes are conducive to my skating being successful.

Started skating in the late 90’s so I grew up loving Zero but every interview/podcast about/with Jamie Thomas that I’ve come across as an adult has completely turned me off to anything he’s involved in.

Man hard to give a solid answer I guess you could say it depended way more on what recent video had been released, but I really liked zero and then strange world came out and I just…..stopped. I porbqbly just grew up but it just got boring, that paired with what the alien crew/dylan were doing I liked all that more. That being said I don’t really care for hockey/FA either.

FA forever but it just doesnt feel the same as when it first started. benny does a great job with hockey but i've moved on from liking that board shape, feels super weird to ride now. some newer companies feel more representative of what i like and im more into riding quality products from legacy brands ive always loved (DLX, baker)

i was a diehard hesh flip/emerica kid, david gonzalez was my favorite skater but cherry completely changed that for me lol. went from wanna be jaws to wanna be sean pablo in like a week

True story: I feel weird buying my favorite company’s boards because I have a years-long feud with one of their ams (he accused me of poisoning his deceased grandma) and I feel weird indirectly giving him money. I’m not shitposting by the way, genuinely one of the weirdest interactions I’ve ever had, even outside of skating

Stopped liking it by early high school. I realized quickly that pandas and sweater vests didn't exactly garner the attention of the opposite sex.

Alien went from amazing, eccentric and artistic to pumping out the very worst stuff ever made in skateboarding. Boards with Dyrdek's dog, Monster/Alien boards, etc. People give Dyrdek a lot of love for buying the brand back and giving it to the founders, but in my eyes he completely ruined that brand before he supposedly saved it.

I know this isn't really related, but since you're talking about Jamie Thomas it's at least semi-relevant. I'd always viewed him quite highly since Welcome To Hell was the first video anyone ever showed me but late in my teenage years, I started to figure out how he was a strange controlling egomaniac, telling people how to dress, how to act, and what tricks to do etc.

Anyway, smash cut to 16 years later, my friend and local hometown hero skater Jamie Collins dies in a cliff diving accident. He was getting flow from Globe and some other regional companies. He was a good man and did a lot for our community and skate scene; including hosting ramp jams at his parent's farm/campground, building a mini ramp in a large storage shed and sharing the key with all the homies, organizing skate camps/lessons for the young kids at the skatepark through the local parks and rec programs and even permanently installing the best fixed round bar at our local park that he took out from the doomed 'skate section' of my old junior high school which wasn't being used anymore. Admittedly he had a drinking problem, which probably played a role in his accident but he was always supportive and kind to every generation of skaters beneath him. We weren't super close but I grew up skating around him as a shy kid awkwardly asking to see his sleeve of printed photos from a trip to California (one of his big trips down there to try and make it but broke his ankle so badly someone sent the footage to that ancient vulture reality tv show Real TV), to a clueless man-child young adult drinking and skating with him regularly. I even worked on his family farm for a bit and have a pretty vivid memory of sleeping in the bed of his pickup truck to get away from another older weird local who was asking me to jerk off in front of him... That's probably too much drunken nostalgic setup but things keep flooding back to me lately so might as well post them here for posterity.

I'd always known that he built a concrete and brick/tile mini ramp 2 hours out on the west coast in Tofino but I was in and out of the skate scene so many times at that point I guess he and others involved figured I wasn't interested or worth taking out there to see/skate it. But after he passed I thought someone would finally take me out there and for some fucked up reason I feel personally insulted and pissed off that because of who he is, Jamie Thomas got taken out there and did some small piece about it for reasons unknown to me, despite him not knowing Collins at all. It feels like he forced the word respect in as many times as possible. I don't even know what to think anymore but this video bums me out more than it should.

Just what a grandma-poisoner looking for cover would say

Alien went from amazing, eccentric and artistic to pumping out the very worst stuff ever made in skateboarding. Boards with Dyrdek's dog, Monster/Alien boards, etc. People give Dyrdek a lot of love for buying the brand back and giving it to the founders, but in my eyes he completely ruined that brand before he supposedly saved it.

It's always weird to me when slap acts like the dyrdek/mikey taylor Era of alien was the best. Fuck all that noise. Current aws is more like 90s aws, which I prefer to 'plan b super team wannabe' aws

Everyone knows that the best companies in skating happen to be the ones who released popular videos around the time that they were most impressionable.

Been there, my man.
I rocked that painter cap all through high school....

Toy Machine feels like it’s fallen off a bit. Still like their team and edits but it doesn’t feel like they’re doing much lately. Same goes for AWS 2.0. Love their graphics but it doesn’t have that team vibe and seem to only be able to promote 2 guys at a time.

I used to love creature as a teenager. Loved the metal aesthetic, loved the combination of mostly transition skating with some big gnarly street shit thrown in. They definitely separated themselves from other brands by being THE hesh brand of the time. And to top it off the team came to a nearby city when I was like 17 and put on an all-time demo, I met Navarrette and Hitz and they were like 'sick fucken shirt dude' because I had a black flag shirt on. Getting a complement from my heroes was a big deal to a teenager like me who was the only guy into punk in my small rural hometown.

I took some time off skating and when I came back it felt like creature totally changed and lost the soul. Their video soundtracks are like 50% rap music and it's mostly street skating. If they weren't wearing the brand's clothing it would be hard to tell you're watching a creature video. The original guys aren't as prevalent in the videos anymore which is understandable, but the new crew just seems too big and forgettable. Chris Russell, Willis Kimbel and John Worthington are sick and have the original creature aesthetic. and Milton Martinez rips but is not very likeable outside of his skating. The rest of the team are whatever.

Blitz Distribution *Birdhouse, Hook-Ups, Flip, Baker and Fury Trucks* was really untouchable in the late 90s-early2000s. From the skaters to the videos and art direction, they really had a stranglehold in that era. It's really a damn shame how much of shell of former selves other than Jeremy Klein with Hook Ups, they've all become.

eS when they made their 2014 comeback, which is ironic because I had spent the previous year hoping they would come back. Their shoe designs and seemingly shittier insoles in the rereleased shoes is what lost me, but their new baggy denim is decent.

Girl/Lakai: No idea exactly why I lost interest, but stopped skating their boards shortly after Pretty Sweet and their videos lost my attention shortly after as well

Wouldn't say I "dislike" either company now, but they've definitely lost my attention for the most part. Fourstar was cool bring that shit back for real no collab only bs

Lakai when everyone left and they started putting out dogshit quality shoes that fell apart while walking.

eS was a long time coming, but especially after the reboot. The recent re-issues (Koston, Penny, MJ, Muska) look good in product pics, but they’re all shit quality and fit funny.

Craig got weird after Pretty Sweet. Chocolate was still cool for a bit (especially with Jerry), but now they have an inescapable rapey vibe.

Flip was the quickest fall from grace. After the Boulala incident, Arto left, then the little kid takeover and Extremely Sorry. Several of my all-time favorites are still on the team, but they’ll never be cool again.

Yes. So glad 101 avoided World and bLind’s fate. It was such an amazing company; their videos (SNUFF being my favorite) were brilliant because they were all under 10 minutes. May have seemed like a bit of rip-off at first, but quality and brevity hit really hard.

Mindfield AWS was took the super team mantle from Lakai after FF, then crashed hard when they put Dyrdek's brand on everything. Even though he saved the brand from the brink of collapse they've yet to reach the same relevance of the 90s and 00s.

I liked silly Foundation when Josh Beagle frolicked with Heatch. later when it became darkhaired handrail heshers, wasn't as interesting.
Illuminati was a great name but Silverstar was not.
Underworld Element was one of the grittiest, rawest companies out there. Pulaski beatdowns, gold teeth Pepe making out, Lil Stevie playing with dice. Then it became (of the world) Element and in Zumies next to Billabong.
Totally. I was also a fan and ”silly” an apt description of Foundation during that Superconductor Supercollider-Tentacles of Destruction-Rolling Thunder era when Heath Kirchart was Josh Beagle’s (more talented) sidekick and had yet to complete puberty. Steve Olson and Frank Hirata were rad and goofy too, but never liked Steve Berra. I wasn’t interested when they transitioned into the Art Bars/That’s Life era either; although Daniel Shimizu was great. I was an Ethan Fowler during his Stereo years, but not when he got on Foundation and went full-on “Indie Rock Hipster” with fur-lined coats, striped shirts, and dyed black hair for some reason.

Another couple of great things about Underworld Element was that they initially had Julien Stranger (which was very odd in hindsight) and they put out those Hip-Hop logo rip-off boards (Cypress Hall, Pang Starr, Slick Rick Ibaseta). It really pushed the East Coast at a time when there very few East Coast brands.

The new shoes they come out with are terrible and the remakes have copycat soles from other models or are worse-looking models than the ones they emulated. Not to mention the Accel OG is a completely terribly redesigned and stripped version of the original.

Es and Emerica were 2 of my favorite brands for sure. I just started liking Lakai and iPath more towards 2004... then all 4 of those brands just got really bad by 2007. i think doug brown sucks too, i liked sole tech more before i knew who ran it.

rewind a bit further, i fucking LOVED GLOBE shoes early on, mostly because I loved Danny Gonzales. he was my favorite skater and his shoe was my 2nd pro model shoe i ever got (my first ever skate shoe was a Frank Hirata DUKES from the bargain bin that was probably 3+ yrs old. man those things were GAS!!!) I believe it was once i saw PJ Ladd WHL i made the switch over to Accel's and never went back to robot shoes ever again.

Fury Trucks was my go-to trucks for many years. I cant relaly remember why i switched to indy, was probably just because i saw so many pros riding them. i did have indy early on though in 1999. then indy became my favorite trucks for like 15 years from 2005-2020. then i found out about Ace and Thunder and I just like those companies a bit more.

Toy Machine I liked less the more i kinda learned about ed he just seems a bit creepy to me and not cool. also i dont like how you dont know where the board was made, this bugs me about a lot of brands, they are made in all different woodshops. it was always one of my favorite companies growing up and boards were always solid until some point in 2010s maybe.

Y’all remember when Shorty’s and Osiris just ruled the skate world? That was a wild ride. I was die hard Shorty’s from the jump. Can’t think of another company that had such an impact from the very inception. Once they put out Guilty I was like, ya I’m out.

Osiris’ fall from grace was more subtle tho. I blame them on issuing out only bulky potatoes after The Storm. Chad’s Scheme shoe was pretty cool tho. Where the fuck are they at these days tho? They got their insta hacked and just called it a day?

As everyone else said, Flip was my jam until they phoned in Really Sorry and I started to slowly realize Penny was over it. Fuck them for not putting any Rune in that video. Strange time.

Mindfield AWS was took the super team mantle from Lakai after FF, then crashed hard when they put Dyrdek's brand on everything. Even though he saved the brand from the brink of collapse they've yet to reach the same relevance of the 90s and 00s.

Mid 2000s era Zoo was a husk of itself, at least the team was getting paid with that Ecko money.

Agree.

American Dream Inc. leaving Deluxe and changing its name to AD Unit made me lose interest.

They were untouchable on Deluxe with Harold, Jimmy Chung, Mike Hernandez, and Jahmal.

Yeah, American Dream Incorporated was an interesting company and really contributed to one of the best eras of Deluxe. I had their ads on my wall in high school for sure, although I never had a chance to get one of their boards.

I had a chance to get Harold’s ODB deck and I didn’t, which I highly regret.

The American Dream Inc. had such a sick design aesthetic. Same with Metropolitan.

I wouldn't say there was any specific turning point but growing up just made me realize that skateboarders are not people to be looked up to, and that's fine.

In particular, I guess I would say that an idealized version of Anti Hero was my favorite company. Love the skating, the travel videos (Destination Unknown was on repeat...), general vibe etc.

I still do, but it's harder to ignore the underlying current of cretinous energy. I used to think it was a bit, and I'm sure it is for most of them, but some stories about certain team members make them seem outright stupid and meanspirited. Bad combo.

Anyway I don't really care what they do, but their little hesh imitators acting stupid at the bowl are irritating.

Emerica was my favorite company for most of my life. Even after Made 2 I was a total fanboy, then one day I blinked and most of my favorite riders were off. I still hung on for awhile when I realized my shoes were getting ruined much faster than before, and in ways I've never seen a skate shoe wear down before. At that point I kinda realized that I was in denial about the quality, because as soon as I tried other brands it was a night and day difference. There's been a few times I've been tempted to give them another shot, but with how my last few pairs went I just can't justify the purchase.

I’d say Crail and Flip are dominating this thread.

It’s also pretty strange that 2020s Baker is nearly as exciting as the early 2000s and > the 2010s.

I felt this way , my last real pairs were the Romero laced in like 2014. I was actually really hyped on all the G6s except for those hideous Reynolds. But that came and went so quick and I was finding dead stock 2007 blazers that held up better than any core brand did.

This year  I’ve bought a couple pairs of the g6 slip  cups and and the g6 gammas and really love em. I got regular winos too but those are just chillers all in holding up well. Maybe not big 3 levels but as good as the ones of my childhood if not better.

For me the final straw was when Jerry Hsu got the axe. I'm always hoping they'll bring back the magic though. Their last video was pretty good.

The Wino G6 slip on was the last Emerica shoe I bought and it was, by miles, the worst shoe I have ever skated. The elastic band on the side busted after maybe a week and so I retired them to just wear at my desk job. After a couple months of JUST wearing them to the office, all of the inside material cracked and chipped away. I've never experienced a pair of shoes literally disintegrate like that ever.

He had an interview where he said they broke their contract to kick him off because some financial consultant told them to, and it was like maybe a year after having arguably the best part in their video. That was the moment the whole "skater owned" thing stopped meaning anything to me.

Kinda of a social/cultural shift because I don't think the brand really devolved.  I only rode $lave boards for a long time because of Horton's graphics, the team, good bbs wood/shapes etc. But then within a week (around 2018?), people on here started commenting on the name, and them my wife did as well. I got it in my head that maybe a 30 something white male should not be holding a board with the word slave on it in really large font. Anyway, I still ride a $lave board here and there, but not every deck anymore.

And yes, I understand it is an economic/capitalist $lave (That's why I liked it in the first place).

Par for the course for TnT but bummed reading about Gerwer acting like a shithead. We've all done shitty things while drunk, but setting a park on fire is criminal.

I always wondered if Cardiel's injury during the Australia trip was avoidable. Given the reputation the AH crew had with alcohol and drug use it wouldn't surprise me they were intoxicated during the accident.

I can't believe I read that entire shitty interview. What an insufferable clown of a kook.

Brixlegg is a big park as well though, that must have been fun…..

Err… well we fucking had a lot of Jim Beam! We brought like 4 or 5 bottles started drinking at 6, hung out at the park, watched some skating, hung out with the locals and we were just all fired up knocking all the tables over, harassing the beer tent, playing dice, losing hundreds of dollars! It’s getting fucking weird. People are scared of us. They wouldn’t even fucking approach us (laughs) because we would yell at every person that would walk by. So we’re like drinking and doing whatever and then we had a fire. We were like let’s start a fire so we go to the street course section and we take all of the banners even though they were on the bracket system it’s on a huge poster and we took it down and we started to burn all this plastic and then we were like, oh it’s the fucking fun box over there, no one was even skating….I didn’t see anyone skate it, so there was a little grind box and I pulled it over the fire and we started to light the wooden skate park on fire which is funny because we were reading a book called Lords of Chaos and it’s all about black metal and shit and they fucking burn churches (laughs) but this is was our version…..we burned wooden skate parks!

So people got all pissed at us because we were burning their shit and they came over with the fire hoses and sprayed it out and we were like oh fuck the party here is over. So we went back to the hotel and it was like 9’o clock and we were like fucking hammered. Some people were blacked out, everyone at the hotel was outside eating dinner it was like 20 tables set up there was a full crowd people were kind of relaxing having a nice dinner and we all went on fire and sat down where ever the fuck there was as open chair, yakking at each other. I don’t know what the hell we were talking about but one of their dudes came up and he was like I’m sick of this shit, got up out of his chair he was sitting about 10 tables away.

It got all quiet, he came over, got in my face, he was like “you disrespect us, you don’t respect what we do here” and I’m like, what the fuck are you talking about man? He was like “you fucking Americans just come over here you scare people you were scaring people all weekend people were timid around you.” We were like fuck man that’s just how we ride man, and he was like, “you don’t respect what we do”. I’m like fuck what you do here, we built this shit, this is Dreamland man, this is American built, this skate park in your shitty arsed town, you should be a lucky man you should feel lucky that shit is there! Don’t fucking talk shit to me about how you think I feel about Austrians or whatever….it was like a real bummer. Then Frank Gewer spoke to some other kids earlier and those guys were pissed about that too. Frank was like “you can suck my mother fucking dick” when everyone was eating and it was quiet. No one said a thing before he said it and he yelled it out and the dude just ran over and choke-held Frankie, dragged him off his table like pulled him away out to the street!

We don’t want to have a fucking fight man, these people are tired, we got nothing to fight for like. I’m not trying to fight but they were getting in our faces and then Omar’s whole team got into it, we were hammered on the Beam we were just hammered you know, what the fuck. It was still light out almost all of them had weed and couldn’t handle it and they were trying to step up but we got our asses kicked!

We left at 7 in the morning to get on the train and we were outside of the hotel and Omar hears us outside and he came out of the hotel to the front of the hotel and getting in my face what you still want some? You think T.A (Tony Alva) knocked your teeth out I’ll knock your fucking teeth back! Do you remember Marseille a few years back?

Yeah…

You remember the Austrian kid fucking cradle fag? I was getting a burger over there and I seen him he was like “what’s up you fucking cradle boy” and he was like “you fucking burned my fun box!” I was like yeah, I did! I thought he was joking like it was alright. He was like “yeah you fucking try that again come down by yourself next time!” I was like what the fuck you got a problem with that? He was like “your fucking team, they don’t skate, they just drink booze and don’t skate so what the fuck”! I’m like, that’s how it is man, don’t think that you know us, what are you judging us on? You don’t really fucking know us…that’s our life! So don’t even bother trying to defend your shit, we are just being ourselves….You know what though, shit happens but we all make up. One night, I had a room with Jake Phelps and in the middle of the night Jake was sleeping on this futon couch thing, then he fucking tips the thing over and falls and hits his head on the light stand and he has a big scar there now!

As far as cardiel accident being avoidable yes but I don't think it had anything(or very very little) to do with drugs or alcohol and more just making a terrible mistake. Pretty sure he got pinched between the back of a bus and a trailer while they were trying to either park or pull out

Pretty sure he got pinched between the back of a bus and a trailer while they were trying to either park or pull out

drunken skitching between 2 vehicles to get a cig or light, i believe. long time ago, the story was in print. i didn't even think Cards smoked but that's how i recall reading it. maybe he was getting a light for someone else? maybe i'm making stuff up?

Can't forget that TNT sued Snugglebandit over a Slap post. When you look like a kook next to Andy Roy, it's time to take a step back and examine your life.

Cross post from "HAVE PROS EVER RUINED YOUR LOCAL SPOT ?"

Here's the story isolated so Easy Slider or any other curious party don't have to subject themselves to any more of this fried bozo's words.

1:07:02, they don't go into too much detail, presumptuous of me to assume alcohol / drugs were involved, but it sounds like the accident could have been prevented. Ultimately it was exactly that, an accident.

Going backwards:

-Alien Workshop. I can't really say I stopped liking them for sure, something about them just "feels" different since they re-opened to me. And as usual, i'd say its because I get attached to eras. So I mean, I've liked them from say 1992 or 1993 through... when they closed that one time. But I still check out their stuff so again I don't really dislike them. Huge fan of AWS, especially the Timecode era. Eh, 1992/93-2010 was my fave stuff! Alien is still sick just different?

-the original Plan B (1991-1997?) was awesome, I thought. I was pretty excited initially when they started the reboot (throw in Wenning, PJ etc.) but the overall lack of direction really put me off and I thought it got corny real fast. So I guess when the reboot happened, I stopped liking it. Or possibly once I realized that it seemed like there was no direction.

-Before Plan B, H-Street was my jam. I was still into them... through "Lick" video. Then I guess that was it for me? Is this when H-Street became Evol? I kind of don't remember, but I know I liked Jason Rogers so I liked them through this spot. Most of my pals abandoned H-Street once Plan B started, but I couldn't let go completely.

-Before (also kinda during) H-Street, World Industries was my shit because of Klein, Chatman and Mullen. I think I only "stopped liking" them because I was so into H-Street and at the time was really working on my "brand loyalty" to them or whatever. I just went full force H-Street hats, shirts, hoodies, etc. I was obsessed with the logo.

My first years of skating (86-88) I just rotated between Powell-Peralta, Santa Cruz, Vision and Alva. World was the first one I felt "loyal" to, and all my bros were pro-Blind once that started. H-Street I was insane for... and when Questionable came out, all I cared about was Plan B, and then Alien Workshop. I dabble in being into Real and Anti Hero but original World team, H-Street, original Plan B and Alien Workshop have historically been my faves. I haven't really felt the same about a board company since those strong feelings for AWS. I should mention that I am including Habitat in my AWS, because I would rotate AWS and Habitat bloards for a good 5 years straight. Also funny that I have used a lot of Anti Hero boards but based more on the size/shape of the boards, rather than hellride.

Huge fan of their videos, graphics and team, but that name is the reason I've never purchased a product.

I sorta wished they took the opportunity to rename themselves after the Black Box departure.

About 3 weeks ago I started to get the sensation that someone at Frog was putting some kind of thought...any kind of thought...into their graphics. It was in the way the little star in the logo (the one where the "o" would be, not the one at the tail end of the "g") had a half-smile, like it was trying to convey something...anything...I knew then that my love affair with Frog was over. The halcyon days of just drawing anything and printing it were over. Someone was...trying. Ugh

when i started skating as a little grom that liked rap, zoo york quickly became one of my favorite companies. a few years later my tastes changed and i've gotten more into punk and hardcore, still liked rap a lot and did shitty graffiti. but zoo was kind of not cool anymore. when baker and bootleg started i was really into that stuff because of course it coincided with me starting to drink and smoke weed at around 15-16 and it was like a hybrid. i was also trying to be hesh and fresh at the same time.

never was really disappointed with baker and i love how they are still around as a household name and even distro now.
the biggest disappointment overall was probably crailtap as a whole. i was a never a diehard craig fan, but i loved their stuff as much as the next skater. i think i haven't been interested in anything they do in a about a decade. and also i think brands like workshop just should have stayed dead. nothing against those guys on the team, good for them, but there are some brands around, legacy or not, that should just have their lifesupport cut because what the fuck are you actually doing. see enjoi. any skatecompany keeping the lights on for over ten years and actually be able to pay out their riders so they don't waste their time to skate themselves into bankruptcy or unemployability is a huge win for everyone involved imo. better to end it when it doesn't make sense than wasting everyone's time and money for up to years.

Habitat / AWS , probably stopped caring a lot about them in between Mindfield, Cross Continental ? Why? Probably because the direction they were going in didn't fit why I started loving the brands in the first place.

I was literally obsessed with AWS/habitat and didn't skate anything else for literally 17 years. People thought I was getting flowed by them and dc at one point, because I was only decked out in aws/habitat shirts, dc shoes and droors clothing.

Anyway ... I absolutely loved the aesthetic and the imagery. They mystique that was surrounding the brandname, the cool messages they had in graphics, the amazing team etc. When they were going more and more "commercial" I starting disliking the direction they were going in, and unfortunately it was kind of the same with habitat.

I truly get it when companies need to make cash, but it seemed they sold their soul to the devil. It was nothing compared to what they once were.

But for me it really went downhill when they fired Don Pendleton. I know there was a huge era where Hill and Blender did cool graphics, but Pendleton fit their style so well it seemed they were a symbiosis. That was a bigger hit for them than they'll ever admit.

I hated the new graphic direction they were going in after Don, and I couldn't take them seriously anymore.

At one point it bothered me so much I even tried sending in some "alien" graphics to get them back to their roots. They got back and I was asked to make a series. That series was even approved by most of the riders because they hated the direction as well, but they never even made it into production ... It got good feedback from whoever was answering emails (which was a regular gmail account by the way). I even said they could use all graphics for free. I didn't want anything in return, I wanted Alien to return to their roots.

But Hill never bothered to respond. That was in 2013. After that I don't think I ever bought another AWS deck again? Not that I was salty, not at all. They graphics just kept getting worse and worse ...

I do ride habitat and Darkroom right now ...

AWS is slowly redeeming itself it seems but the graphics still need a ton of work. I might pick up a deck when they make 7.75's again.

PS: I still have about 30-40 old unskated AWS decks I have collected over the years. Those will never leave my house.

Would have more , but I guess I stopped getting tattoos once my son was around (as to spend money more wisely or whatever)

Any pictures of your graphics?

If they are pre-Mindfield I'm sure they are worth a pretty penny to collectors. I'd definitely fork out money for a Kirchart deck.

Sick alien collection above.  Would encourage folks to check out what they have currently.  Also they have number 7.75-8 decks again.  I mostly ride large but I have a 7.75 logo deck that is so fine (I think slightly bigger nose then spectrum).  On the wider side, Sammy Montano new shaped deck based on 93/4 shape is a pretty cool direction--  I just ordered and waiting to receive.

@DISTANT RUMOURS  that stuff is sick! Abduction series especially. Seriously awesome work.

also sweet collection, I saw that Ride Everything 3 in there at the bottom and reminded me that I skated every single deck from Ride Everything 1 AND 2. I skated so much back then though that boards lasted me like 10 days. sick

Thanks @Frank!

Not sure why they stopped responding one of a sudden.

I was never pushing them either (far from it actually) and even sent them the artfiles. Completely for free too. I never asked a dime.

I guess Hill really thought my designs sucked, or they already were in rocky waters back then ...

Probably the latter when they were getting tossed around by Burton and the VCs, you should email them back with the old email and see if they're interested now.

"Hey I wanted to follow up from our last email 10 years ago...."

@DISTANT RUMOURS your AWS submissions look really cool - like a touch of Charles Burns on the Workshop aesthetic
I always loved that Pappalardo frog board by Pendleton and the AVE Mindfield board by Hill
