Title: The Heated Wheel
Post by: Sketch Hitchcock on January 11, 2023, 05:26:17 PM
Thought it could be useful to have a dedicated zone to discuss all things THW, collect new catalogs etc.

The Polarizer thread is great, but doesn’t really pertain to all their popsicle and shaped offerings, and the brand itself has dropped so many new graphics, consistently, along with really interesting shapes… just felt like it deserved its own thread.

My only gripe is I wish they would list wheelbase for all the popsicle boards on the site.  Other vendors have a variety of WB listings for the same board, so it would be nice to see that confirmed officially.

I’m a big fan of their stuff, I currently have a polarizer, pop and shaped deck in the quiver and a few more on ice.  I’m loving the slick.

Not to hijack or change the topic of the thread, but in addition to WB I wish more manus and online shops would also list nose and tail lengths.  I find myself going to the Tactics site before buying, say, a Black Label deck.  It seems most only list wheelbase and I find that very annoying.

I'll probably get a heated wheel deck next time i buy one. The graphics are sweet, it even makes me want to get rails just to save the graphic

Yes, good point.  I get that they wanna keep the page clean and simple but maybe a little “full dimensions” link could spell out all the details in a pop-up?

They use generic BBS shapes should be easy to find the dims.

Is the 9.25 shape (Frontier, Yuma, etc) offered by any other companies?   It’s bbs wood so I guess I’m just curious whether the same shape is used by other companies or it’s unique to Heated Wheel.

Kind of in love with it, and since every drop sells out I’m also a little worried I won’t be able to find more of them.

Site says they’re a custom shape but I’d love to know too.

Also would be curious to see what the standard popsicle BBS dims THW use are if anyone has access to those!

Dimensions are listed on two shops in AU that I have seen, but if anyone wants specific info I can post it here for you for each board size or shape too.

From the Woodshop thread:

Two shops I know that also list dimensions have quite a few of their boards:

https://www.ocdskateshop.com.au/collections/the-heated-wheel-1

https://www.basementskate.com.au/brands/the-heated-wheel/

Basement skate has the dimensions in the specs tab of each listing, in case it doesn't show up easily.

Eg

Width (inches)    8.25
Length (inches)    31.75
Wheelbase (inches)    14.25

Width (inches)    8.38
Length (inches)    32
Wheelbase (inches)    14.25

Width (inches)    8.5
Length (inches)    32
Wheelbase (inches)    14.375

Width (inches)    8.75
Length (inches)    32.375
Wheelbase (inches)    14.375

They were all normal popsicles at least.

This is awesome.  One outlier I saw is the 9.0 MIG-

It specs it out at 8.75, 14.5 WB, 32.5… a typo or just the way they measure with the concave?

I like all the longer 14.5+ wheelbases so I am personally bummed less are available now, but maybe the marketplace has dictated this change

I did notice that too, so just didn't put it in.

OCD does have the basic popsicle as well, as below:

https://www.ocdskateshop.com.au/products/the-heated-wheel-grasshopper-team-9-0-skateboard-deck

WIDTH
9.0
LENGTH
32.75
WHEEL BASE
14.5

I would say that other board is the 9.0 and they just put the width in as 8.75 by mistake.

Also I think more than anything, it took a while for their stuff to get here to AU, so when I went looking before, no one really had it, but now a lot more shops have it so someone brought in a lot of it here.

Very interesting, I also noticed this team graphic in 8.75 is already available on OCD… I’ve only seen the team riding samples on ig.  Maybe it’s part of this upcoming drop?

The 8.5 x 32.4ish with 14.5 wb is pretty common, with a lot of brands using that size for their boards, even if they are not listed as more than 32 even.

That is my secondary main go to, which I always have a few setup, but I am enjoying the 8.38 x 32.25 with 14.5 wb for the most part, of which I have too many setup up but they work well with different wheels depending on what or where I am skating.

Sorry if I already asked or you said, but where are you - country or continent?

There are a few of that size in AU right now for pretty cheap, which I always keep my eye on.

FYI--The Heated Wheel trucks are back in stock and it looks like there are new Polarizer graphics on pre-drilled decks.

I kind of liked drilling mine and playing with SG truck placement, but this will definitely speed up the process for those looking to just grip it and rip it.

Was it just the stock listed on the site, or somewhere else?

It think the artwork was printed upon order since you could pick the size and medium.

Imagine he just didn’t want to continue it. I believe all the originals were sold, at least the few I looked at were.

It’s definitely all his art on the skate products etc., there just used to be an ”Artwork” tab that sold his original artwork and various prints too - now that’s been removed

He's done that for years, the website used to have an artwork tab back when it was just boards every now and then and you dealt with him directly, but it was mostly just empty.  If he's got it he'll probably put it back up.

Interesting, so it seems only the 9 inch boards are 14.5 inch wheelbase?

Might sway me to Baker or Black Label when I need my next BBS 8.5… have even considered going 8.75 but that’s pretty unusual to see under a 14.375 or 14.5 in that size, no?

I keep thinking the market is dictating these changes, so hope it’s resulting in more sales for THW, but it’s disappointing given I thought the latest interation of the brand (in its website form) has been SO long wheelbase friendly.

At least the shaped boards still seem evenly split between 14.25 wb and 15+

I feel like I could be insane for being so worked up over an eighth of an inch, but I really thought THW had my back on these 14.5 wheelbases for popsicles, it makes the wheelbase non-disclosure on the webshop all the more frustrating.  Thank you for sharing this though, super useful to know.  Guess the 9” Mig 3.0 measured earlier in this thread is the only one of its kind…

More info for what it’s worth. Just got a Fight Sobriety 8.5 and the WB is 14.38. The edges are so routed down- the deck is actually more like 8.38 and pretty much 8.25 at the back trucks.

Width (inches) 8.75
Length (inches) 32.375
Wheelbase (inches) 14.375

The 8.75" grasshopper is 32.75" long with a 14.25" wb (7.25" nose & 7" tail). The thing that's odd is I've seen the length on this one listed anywhere from 32" to 32.5" but no one has accurate measurements up. The shape is not square like an FA board but is also not super pointy like a Polar (works perfectly fine for tailblocks). My only complaint is the proportions seem a bit off to me as far as the nose/tail go when compared to the 14.25" wb, but I still like how it skates... I'm just overly picky and that's why I'm working on doing my own boards lol.

Thanks for the added info!

I have only ever seen the boards online, never in person, which is why I was so curious too, especially when I see something like that with a medium to long board with a short wheelbase.

As a lot more shops are now getting them, as well as most being wider and bigger boards, they are more of interest too.

did you measure the length with the concave or straight across?

All measurements were taken with a soft vinyl tape measure laid flat on the board, so 32.75" is the length with the concave. If I use a standard tape measure and go straight across the length is 32.375"

Comparatively, I was on their 9.25" Frontier shape for a bit and that is:
Width: 9.25" (9.0625" over the front truck / 8.625" over the back truck)
Length: 32.5" w/ concave (32" straight across)
Nose: 7.25"
Tail: 6.625"
WB: 14.3125"

Thanks for the added info!

I'm stoked that I can use some of my shape development R&D madness to help some people with context. I've always been nuts with this stuff, but it's been elevated and then some during the process of developing shapes for sob story.

The thing that throws me off with this board is if you look at most 8.5" boards that have a 14.25" wheelbase the length is normally coming in around 31.8" - 32" (almost always below 32.5"), so it's very difficult for me to justify the need for a 32.75" length on the same wheelbase. The width should not dictate the length of the board/nose/tail, and it should be more scaled to the wheelbase IMO (and even if factoring in width, it's only a 6.35mm+ difference). A 7.25" nose to me feels more like a "shaped board" than what you'd expect on a popsicle when you're wheelbase is only 14.25".

Case & point since I'm so used to comparing things to DLX dimensions/proportions -

The 8.5" Anti Hero Blue Eagle is *according to the internet*:
Width: 8.5"
Length: 31.8"
Nose: 6.875"
Tail: 6.5"
WB: 14.25"

The 8.75" Anti Hero White Eagle is *according to the internet*:
Width: 8.75"
Length: 32.75"
Nose: 7.25"
Tail: 6.625"
WB: 14.62"

crazy frontside tb pic!!!!!

interested in seeing your 8.75"s when they're done.

Thanks!

Long story short, we did the 9.25" pre-pro samples with Pennswood first since my friend/business partner won't skate anything below a 9" and I don't mind skating shaped boards from time to time. We went to do a second pre-pro sample run, this time 8.75" popsicles that I designed more for myself, but kind of stalled out with Pennswood.

We're now working with Generator/BBS and I'm waiting on 8.75"x32.125" (14.25" wb / 7" nose / 6.625" tail) Popsicle pre-pro samples to arrive. The goal is to do a small production run of popsicles first since I'm pretty locked in on what I want this board to be, and this will let us go back to the drawing board to design a 9"+ shape. Austin has been a bit indecisive about what he wants shape-wise after being given the opportunity to start over on a fully custom shape but hopefully, we'll have that dialed in sooner than later. I should have the first pre-pro samples sometime late next month and I'll probably start a thread for sob to keep track of what's going on and not continue to hijack other threads lol.

I just bought one of the grasshopper 8.75's, love that it has a short wheelbase because of this sentence right here:

A 7.25" nose to me feels more like a "shaped board" than what you'd expect on a popsicle when you're wheelbase is only 14.25

I'm actually really looking forward to trying this shape out

I feel like I could be insane for being so worked up over an eighth of an inch, but I really thought THW had my back on these 14.5 wheelbases for popsicles, it makes the wheelbase non-disclosure on the webshop all the more frustrating.  Thank you for sharing this though, super useful to know.  Guess the 9” Mig 3.0 measured earlier in this thread is the only one of its kind…
Well shit, sorry for misinformation.
I pulled the WB from some shop online.
Measured it myself today and it’s actually 14.5”.
Super fun board.
Long tail is apparently what I needed, more pop with less effort than I’ve had in quite some time…

That's the 9.25 x 32 with 14.25 wb isn't it?

I thought I had seen another one, maybe the same shape and it had more weird dimensions, but this is the only one that comes up in searches now:

Not the same graphic though, so that might be different.

Another listing, definitely more than 32" with those nose and tail dimensions:

It is relevant enough that this thread could include anything related.

Exactly when, not sure, but I think for a lot of skaters, their steps down are no where near as celebrated or even acknowledged as their steps up, even if that is a very coarse way to say it, given he went from AH am around 2011, through a short lived Expedition stint from 2013, through pro boards on Santa Cruz from 2016 to mid 2022 Heated Wheel, probably missing some steps along the way, but that is when he referred to "with us at Heated Wheel" in an instagram post.

I have always appreciated his skating, being more transition based myself, so by no means am I meaning any disrespect, but going from Santa Cruz to a very small brand like Heated Wheel seems a big step down.  This in itself could be seen as how disposable some skateboarders are to the industry now, or at least to some brands, always putting the next dude on and bumping off the other guys from the other end of the production line.

Either way, stoked he has a board and a "family" which seems like it is more than what is going on at NHS or somewhere else like Dwindle of late.

Tom Remillard is the TM, he’s been on a while now.  Pretty sure he’s the one who’s brought in Eniz, Jake Hill and Brayan Coria via connections on other teams he’s on.

That makes sense too.

Also glad they gave him a board, Dec 2022.

I think he had some injuries over the years, but it’s moreso that he’s tight with Blender and wanted to help him build out the company.  Also it could just be me, but while Santa Cruz obviously has an amazing history and a much bigger brand awareness globally, I wouldn’t say it approaches the cool factor of THW these days… but I’m pretty biased.

Heated Wheel is the best new company since, I don’t know, Quasi?

I was not expecting such a wide range of decks. Once they have their own wheels they can sell Polarizer completes.

They are almost like Krooked. 80s artist/skater sends in art and stays out of the business portion.

Tom R’s in a better position for him than at Santa Cruz.

I’m thinking about getting the 9.25” board based on the Drehobl but I’m waiting until I get a back truck measurement cause in looks like it tapers too much.

Anyone know the rest of the dimensions on that Tom Remillard 9”?
[close]

I thought I had seen another one, maybe the same shape and it had more weird dimensions, but this is the only one that comes up in searches now:

https://www.shrunkenheadskateboards.com/products/the-heated-wheel-remillard-deck-9-0

The Heated Wheel Tom Remillard Deck 9.0 x 32.75, wb14.5

Not the same graphic though, so that might be different.

Another listing, definitely more than 32" with those nose and tail dimensions:

https://www.warehouseskateboards.com/the-heated-wheel-skateboards-tom-remillard-pro-skateboard-deck-9x32

Deck Size: 9" width x 32" length
Wheelbase: 14.5"
Nose: 7.25"
Tail: 7"

Confirmed

I don't feel any love, or even have much interest in brands like Santa Cruz, so I would definitely back Tom on Heated Wheel in that regard.

As to that board, is it the same as the other 9.25 x 32 with 14.25 wheelbase or are they different shapes?

I seem to recall someone having one of the earlier graphics of a very similar shape and saying it was about 9.2 over the front truck and 8.75 at the back truck, but I could be wrong.  They had 159s on it which worked, but I think even 9" even trucks would still work well enough.

Some places have it with better pics, but no one seems to have it that lists over the truck measurements, the closest being the Conflict Skates site, with a couple of other boards that could almost be similar in taper.

https://www.conflictskates.co.uk/the-heated-wheel--sportsman-skateboard-deck-90-x-32-sky-blue--pool-old-skool-neil-blender-37374-p.asp

"Sportsman"
Team Deck

9.0" x 32"

6.25" nose

7.0" tail

15.0" WB

Medium Concave

Width over front truck: 8.75"

Width over rear truck: 8.5"

SW has decent pics without having the top overlapping and on an angle, so maybe this is worth having a look at too, same as the one above and then the one I think it is closest to in shape - Frontier deck:

https://www.skatewarehouse.com/The_Heated_Wheel_Sportsman_Deck/descpage-HWSMDK.html

https://www.skatewarehouse.com/The_Heated_Wheel_Frontier_Green_Red_Deck/descpage-HWFGRDK.html

That shape looks a bit weird though.

The 9:25 shape is my favorite shape, I’ve been through several.   Board dimensions are all the same regardless of the graphic.

Nose: 7 1/4”
Tail: 6 1/2”
Width over front truck: 9 1/8”
Width over rear truck: 8 5/8”

159s work perfect for me.

Yeah having the dimensions listed makes it a whole lot easier for everyone.

I wonder if they got sick of people asking them about it, or just thought it might be a good idea.

The funny thing with the popsicles is the size of the 8, 8.25, 8.38 and 8.5 all seem to be fairly normal, then the 8.75 and 9.0 seem to be a bit different to other specs of that size board - super long compared to the proportionate wheelbase.  I know a couple of people have had those boards before, but at least now they show the dimensions, it is easier to compare.

Deck Size - 8.0 x 31.85 - 14.25 WB

Deck Size - 8.25 x 31.9 - 14.25 WB

Deck Size - 8.38 x 32.1 - 14.4 WB

Deck Size - 8.5 x 32.35 - 14.5 WB

Deck Size - 8.75 x 32.5 - 14.25 WB

Deck Size - 9.0 x 32.75 - 14.5 WB

The JBL deck has a more rounded tail and looks to be wider up by the front trucks with the taper starting higher up. Sort of a combo between a 90/91 style and the football shape that followed in 92/93.

Received my order today, and they threw in a free set of wheels to make up for the delay. The shape on this thing is wild, much pointier than the Heroin egg shapes.  Will post in the setup thread in the coming days.

Skated the 8.75 team deck for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. I don’t skate much transition, but I like wider boards with relatively shorter lengths and wheelbases. All my flip tricks worked how I hoped, and the wood feels really nice. I do wish the kicks were a bit less square, but I can’t really complain. Definitely will be buying at least one more.

Anyone see this kid Gerry Sherman on The Heated Wheel’s ig?   @geraldwsherman  -  his style is freaking great.  Excellent seeing a bigger guy rip transition like that.  He reminds me a bit of Robbie McKinley.  Very fun approach that makes me want to go skate.
