Darkroom is calling it quits this summer. Company had a suprisingly short run. Can't possibly imagine where any of their riders could end up.

Damn, this one hurts. I have bought several boards, wheels, and shirts from them. Loved Don's graphics on skate gear again, and that he was doing his own thing. I guess the raddest shit is the shit that gets flushed first.

I like Don's art and the videos, but the appeal of Midwest crust is limited and you can't have a specific set be the main image of the brand. At Alien and Habitat the art and video branding was very intertwined and coherent whereas this feels often just like art Don wants to do.

I never felt like this was one company having trouble selling.
Maybe it’s not fun to run a successful company. I tried running a skate shop and I lasted as long as it took for a couple of guys to come into town to take over for me to hang it up.
Whatever the reason, I am glad they made a lot of people happy when they were around. Thanks Darkroom.
PS- I feel like you could sell endless T-shirts to shutterbugs with a name like darkroom. I wish there was a photographer on their team in terms of full on art world type. Maybe would have made a difference. Too bad.

I think the writing was on the wall post pandemic when boards stopped selling. Darkroom won’t be the last to die this year. 2023 is going to flush a lot of deck companies down the toilet.

Honestly, I wasn't completely sold on the idea of the Don P. era aws reboot until I saw the first video. I really liked the Midwest spotlight and thought the skating was really solid. I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

Man I’m surprised to see so much love for pendletons graphics. I thought they all looked the same 10 years ago when AWS and Habitat were getting long in the tooth. And I say this as someone who was super hyped on AWS as a kid. The look just hasn’t evolved much.

Same. I also wasn’t aware Darkroom was considered any bigger than a local company and I follow Pendleton’s work pretty closely and have some of his prints and a painting at my parents’ place.

No disrespect to Don, and the works he has contributed to skateboarding in the past, and guess in the present with DRKRM.... but...
The harsh reality is that it's a brand like many others that rose in the peak of Covid, due to the main fact of having boards ready to go when other companies couldnt because they were moving units pre-covid... supply and demand generated some hype, and obviously there's old head sweaters out there caught up on the AWS and Habitat era Don stuff... (no one seems to be mentioning any Element Don?!)
there's been a few right place, right time brands around world that have already, if not soon will just fade away into nothing leaving good riders with no home, Clemmons on Quasi would be dope though.

Google these things. There are of course guest boards but around that golden era they were seldom so if somebody had a board then they were likely on the team. AWS welcomed him with open arms despite it seeming like a weird fit in retrospect but the image of the brand was a lot more inclusive versus it evolving into the "down river" image dominated by Dill AVE and Dylan.

Quick google said he was put on the team in fall of '98. Was news to me.
It didn't say any of these other minor details that people have shared, which was a more interesting take than reading AWS wiki and searching for D Way. "skateboard social security"

Never liked Darkrooms graphics and it never felt like a real brand. Oh well. I do like some of his other art graphics but the darkroom stuff just seemed like something you would see on a generic target shirt. (Maybe I should’ve put this in the hot takes) :)

i’m a huge blender fan in every way possible, i am also a fan of heated wheel as well. jake hill & enziz are great adds, but jake bruin?? like yeah he’s talented & what not.. i just didn’t think neil would be picking guys like that. the team just doesn’t necessarily have the identity i would expect from a board brand created by one of the most influential/stylish skateboarders of all time.

Picked up a few of their twin nose decks, been riding twins exclusively for a year and I'm glad to add this to the rotation of Habitat / AWS twins.
