Joe rips and has for a long time. Happy to see him get some shine and a well deserved guest board.

Hell yeah! Joe Buffalo is a Canadian legend.

First AH guest board and they picked the right dude…..not really the AH way but hopefully they tell a bit of his story or use this as an opportunity to pass on a bit of history…..

I think just to have a guest board means a lot more people, myself included, looked him up and read a bit about him, as well as what he is doing / stands for.
That in itself is helping the cause a lot more than many other avenues of promotion and might hit a lot more people too.

Holy shit that was great, legit teared up. Thank you for posting!

That's a perfect fit.

He lived in Toronto for years and I never saw anyone who skated like him. He skates with so much power and confidence. He’ll just charge at a ledge full speed and make simple tricks look more exciting.
-
epic that a bunch of white guys would put out a board graphic which has a bunch of white guys getting killed on it. thanks anti hero that's so cooool
-
Joe I'm sure at some point you will read this thread but keep killing it. Fuck the mounties and everything the fucking happened when the European colonization happened..

The Catholic Church/cult can get fucked, and the Canadian govt can do the same for allowing it/financing it to happen. So sorry Joe and his family had to go through that. Good to see it actually being acknowledged and good to see some positive influence on the newer generations.
-
Badass! Would cop in a heartbeat if there were an 8.25.
It’s great seeing how much this has piqued interest in Joe’s story.

A friend and I were just talking about him the other day and I said the first trick of his that ever pops into my mind is that suppperrrrr long bs 5-0 on that nice granite ledge in a pair of I-path Grasshoppers.
-
Massive respect for Joe Buffalo, everyone should watch that document posted.
Really awesome thing from Antihero. Great graphic too from Todd F., hope I can cop one here.

Check out https://www.colonialism.ca/ too if any of you would like to support Joe Buffalo and other indigenous skaters in another way.

Is it?

It's not about them being white (not all mounties are even white to begin with), it's about their inhumane treatment of the natives throughout their history. Highly recommend you do some research about the conflicts between the RCMP (mounties) and Indigenous Canadians if you haven't

right? the indigenous people should have been high fiving the white guys, then you wouldnt have to feel guilty :(
-
Brought to you buy the same white guys that ran a graphic of a white guy hanging…….pretty coooool…..
-
Mine just arrived in the mail What a beaut. One of my favorite AH graphics to date. The 8.75" looks like such a nice shape to ride also. Prob should have got two.

great and deserved deck, too bad it did not came out in my size...But the one I need remains this awesome "crabman" Chief Pierre's guest board.
-
To see anti hero rockin with a residential school survivor? My ancestors would be fuckin stoked!!!

For those of you not from western Canada, the graphic is a riff on a place in Alberta called ‘Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump’ where the Blackfoot would drive a herd of buffalo off the cliff.
Joe seems to be from a completely different tribe (Cree) who were traditionally enemies of the Blackfoot, so I’m not sure how well it translates to actual First Nations skaters in Canada. I’d assume it would probably be a bit like making a Japanese graphic for a Korean skater.
Nonetheless, the heart seems to be in the right place, with the RCMP being driven off the cliff.
And oh yeah, for those of you interested in First Nations history, here is Canada’s first music video, and probably the best fucking song ever to come out of the country.

congrats to joe. takes a lot of courage to be open enough to tell that story. stoked the skateboarding community has gotten behind him. i work at vimeo and know the person who selected it as a staff pick which also makes me stoked.
grabbed one that will not be skated, but hung on the wall.

hey thanks for posting this.

dawg, your heart is in the right place with this call out/call in, but i think you may be incorrect on this as the buffalo jump was a fairly common tactic across tribes of buffalo hunting peoples prior to the introduction of horses by the Spaniards.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_jump (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_jump)
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/madison-buffalo-jump-state-park (https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/madison-buffalo-jump-state-park)
"The Madison buffalo jump was utilized by tribes from across the plains. The Hidatsa, Shoshone, Lakota, Dakota, Nez Perce, Bannock, Arapaho, Salish, Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Crow, Gros Ventres, Cree and Assiniboine all used this cliff to hunt bison, sometimes simultaneously, which required cooperation between peoples despite their cultural differences."
Thank you!
I never knew of any other buffalo jumps!
And it wasn’t intended as a call out really. I just checked where Joe was from and who used Head Smashed In, and wanted to see if there was a connection.
I just checked, and the Cree used Buffalo jumps too, so all my pontificating was just that. I was wrong. Another guy who thinks he knows something, shows off, and ends up getting proved wrong, haha.
Gnarred for humbling me.
The graphic is solid.
But do listen to the song.

Real cool thrasher interview. Kinda blows my mind the level he is skating at being a 47 year old addict in recovery. Fuck ya

Hat’s off to Joe Buffalo and AH
Real recognize Real.
Meet Joe in Vancouver at a spot 20 years ago.
He had a special appearance on and off the board.
Woud buy a JB / AH anytime!

Joe Buffalo fuckin rips
-
Last year I was skating this public minicamp and it was a pretty fun session with a bunch of older guys. Joe shows up and everyone is stoked because he's a Canadian skate folk hero. Someone does a fake nosepick and in a room full of middle aged skaters....someone is going to inevitably say: 'we used to call that a chink chink back in the day!' and you bet someone said it.
I'm pretty asian, and I think I'm funny, so I have a whole bag of material based on this trick but before I could get started.... Joe turns to the guy and half deadpan, half stoic just says....'We don't say that anymore....'
Thanks Joe! That's probably the right move....
-
Didn't Farrel die there also?
Fubar for those who don't know...also ordered one
-
I'm pretty sure Joe Buffalo has met, befriended and remembered the name of every skater in Canada. Even in his partying days.
-
Antihero is sick for this

Back in the days I never realized that it was connected a ethnic slur. I connect it with „Cheers„ or the Italien „cin cin“ version - because of the sound of the truck on cooping. Didn’t grow up English spoken - manny years later I head the term Chink as a slur for an Asian person - und understood that I may misunderstood something - since then this trick is a cin cin to me.
-
For sure, it’s based on the noise f your truck but it’s also a racial slur. As mentioned, as long as someone wasn’t saying the word at me I was ok with it, that said….it’s ok to just leave it alone….fakie ollie nose pick works just fine.
Just because things were done or said in the past doesn’t mean it’s the best way to go going forward……
-
Same with the crack nollie. There was a Zach Lyons trick tip for the (at the time) Chinese Ollie, featuring a presumably pre-psychedelics, The Hundreds wearing Vert God.
I like the GH term crypto-bonk nowadays.
-
This is a sidebar but I’m pretty sure Joe skates for Menu in Vancouver and I just wanted to say they were about the friendliest skate shop I’ve ever been in…I was in Vancouver back in the spring and stopped by to get new bearings.
Super nice guys. Downtown skate plaza was one of the best spots too…
