Are there still people like me who are still dressed in slim or straight pants ?
I can't get away from the phenomenon that there was from around 2006 to 2015 haha No more seriously .. Who like me feels so much better dressed with clothes well cut for the body ?
I am also not talking about tight clothes that stick to the body, but not very loose clothes either..
I've always hated this, I don't feel comfortable haha
If there are still survivors of pants of this kind, tell me your feelings on the current fashion for baggys or wide pants in the 90s style a little shorter at the ankles ..
Do you believe that tight, fitted pants will ever disappear from the world of skateboarding ?
There are still a few pros who maintain this (Daewon, Adam Arunski, Leo romero, Madars apse..)
-
I like a straight Levi 501 style fit - 501's, dickies 874's, etc. - if you skate a lot and your leg/quads get ripped (like AVE, Elijah, etc.) they look more on the slim side, but I can't stand (and even in the heyday of slim hated) the ankle biter look.
-
I still rock slim fit jeans and pants. Cant wear the skinny jeans like I used to cuz my knee swells up and my thighs are thicker than when I was younger. For me the dickies Slim straight pants and Volcom v-monty are my go to pants.
-
Used to rock Duffel style jeans but just prefer a slim or straight fit now. I have mix of random dockers, volcom solver and vorta pants, and a paid of polar 92 to layer under when it's cold. I'm struggling to maintain 130lb and find most regular fit pants to still be too baggy for me
-
I wear Levi’s 502
-
Whatever the 501s are with the zip fly are my go to, but for skating the Polar 93s are way more comfortable if I can find them on sale. Used to skate these levis but they're just too constricting.
-
Levi’s Slim Straight with the stretch fit we’re amazing to skate in.
Then I got old and larger. Can’t where them anymore. But hugging my leg made for better skating instead of getting lost in big baggy pants.
-
You just gotta wear what suits your body.
Danny Garcia killed it with the straight fit pants in this
https://youtu.be/UnBUZo2FEw0
-
I still have a couple pairs of Levi’s 511 I wear. I also love the Volcom Vorta and Solver fits. They’re kind of hard to wear with some of the shoes coming out though. They’re the perfect Janoski jeans though haha.

It's nice to see that some are still loyal to these pants! I really should try these Straight/Slim dickies.. I hear nothing but good things about them !
By the way, today at the skatepark I had a debate, a friend told me that you had more style in wide clothes than in tight clothes.. ::)

I feel like there is such a big difference between what we used to wear and what people wear now, but more than anything pants from brands like Krew or KR3W really were "slim straight" in the fit of them, whereas pants like Dickies 873 Slim Straight are way more loose fitting in the whole leg, being almost bigger overall than the 874 Original Fit, which is a "regular fit" so make of that what you will.
I had seen a few people send back pairs of Dickies 873 or were not happy with them as they thought they were sent baggy pants instead of actual slim fit pants, but the 872 are the slim fit that taper through the leg, way too much for a lot of people to wear comfortably.
If you are interested in the Dickies pants, I would recommend trying any of them on rather than ordering online.
Quite a few people I skate with still prefer the Krew style of pants, be it slightly better cut, more often than not stretch to some degree, but definitely not tight at all, like the super slim style that also came out from Krew and other brands.
It is just down to which brands do what sort of fit, as some that I would have thought to make good pants just felt weird, while others were surprisingly comfortable to me, when I would try on this or that, when it came in.
Now I am just happy in Dickies 874 pants, but i still have a box of Krew jeans / pants around somewhere.
As to the debate about "what looks better" I would say that it is the skater that makes the clothes look better, compared to the clothes that make the skater look better. All up it is definitely a combination of the two, but I have seen some very well dressed individuals do the worst looking things on a board, whereas some of the smoothest skaters wearing the worst clothes can still get away with almost anything if they are that good.
That's my perspective, even though I am sure it would all vary to some degree.

Something else I don't see mentioned enough is how (skate line, not regular) Dickies run small AF. Their size 34 fits like a 31 or 32. Fucking wild sizing issues over there, just like NB# shoes running small most of the time.
Bought some 874 or something similar one time from a shop's holiday sale. Had to sell or donate my pair because the shop did "final sales" on most of what I ordered. Learned a valuable lesson and went back to V-Montys and Frickin Stretch chinos from Volcom. Those pants are home. Covid sale buying without trying on those pants was not worth it. Never again.

Guilty. Stuck in my ways for sure, I went a long time more into music than skating and didn’t skate for a long time, so just kind of kept with the same style. I’m more ashamed about quitting skating than I am still wearing slim/skinny jeans.
I wear Levi’s 511s for the most part now, which was a big adjustment and mainly due to most skate shoes being too bulky for most of my other jeans. Basically I’m fucking stubborn and scared of change so there’s that lol
-
I prefer a slim taper style over baggy. I am too old to be rocking the baggy look.
-
I wear black 511s almost exclusively. I'm tall and in my 40s, no the fuck way am I going to start wearing baggy pants now. When I started, I just wanted to dress like DGar and Ray Loco so it was all black slim pants and white tees.
I do rock the carhartt "straight fit" (their version of a slim) at work when I am doing an install. They're actually kind of loose but also tapered.
FWIW, in the real world no one cares/thinks/talks about pants as much as slap. I've never been at the spot and had anyone care or comment negatively on my pants.

True-- and yet isn't that why we are here, at least in the pants oriented threads on shoes and gear? I'm going to start posting about pants more and more as I get downvoted. Don't care. I can talk to my normal real life friends about basically anything in the universe about what slim fit pants are comfy to skate in, how baggy is to baggy, etc.
I will say, I do talk with people in real life at the skate park about pants as well. Yes, this is not a topic of convo in most other venues. Most people also not interested in talking about shoe and wheel materials, etc.
Throwing out another potential option for older heads looking for "slimmer" but not slim fit is Polo Ralph Lauren khaki, blue or classic green pants. Feel great to skate in versus jeans and can be worn professionally as well.
I love the Levis as others have said and you can wear anywhere, but do find them harder to skate in as I get older unless pretty baggy/relaxed fit.
No, for sure. I like talking about this stuff and no one at the spot wants to hear it so this is great. I just know (speaking personally) I've gotten way too self conscious about my pants because of this place before (which is a me thing, not trying to blame the boards).
-
I wear Levi's 502 (stretch) and Levi's 541 athletic fit. The 502s are pretty snug in the thigh but I can still move well in them. The 541s are a bit more roomy but they're still a slim look on me. I'm not bodybuilder big by any stretch but I carry a bit more muscle than a typical skater I think. I'm 5'7 and 165, give or take 5lbs depending on the time of year.
I can't do the big pants. Not a good look on me and I definitely feel too old for it. My shirts, pants, jackets, etc are all on the fitted side but definitely not painted anymore. My clothes were tight-tight in the 2000s.

idk man, I was at the spot and had to chuckle to myself seeing some grown ass dude skating in 00s Zero style nut huggers this morning ;)
skate clothing trends go in waves, I already see kids in Brooklyn back on the skinny black jeans and it’ll have a snowball effect
Neither one looks better than the other IMO, I wish the world worked in such a way that people would dress in whatever they personally like and what works for them

Pretty sure this is actually because Dickies aren't vanity sized, so you're getting a true 34" waist.
-
For me 501 93's (100% cotton) are the perfect jeans.
Really good construction, tights are on the loose side but comfortable, after some good sessions they become softer and cozy
Vans Lizzie skate chinos have little taper towards the cuffs, I felt that the pants cut are perfect with a great room in the tights. They are closer to a slim straight (still straight but a tinny tighter)
I tried Dickies 874 but they were too baggy for me, the slim version doesn't fit me too well too
I've been using Zara jeans too, good pants to destroy
I really want to try the vans ranged relaxed, seems a good pant to chill
-
I was all about the Uniqlo slim fit chinos, but I feel like they've gotten slimmer over time, even as I've sized up. The ones from like 8 years ago fit better than the current ones. I had a brief mid-life crisis pre pandemic where i bought a pair of 874 dickies but I felt like I was swimming in them. I realized I felt kinda embarrassed wearing the same pants I did as a teenager in the 90s and when then got trashed during home renovation projects I didn't mind and never replaced them. I put on my 511s the other day and they felt a bit too tight for me. I like a looser straight fit, but don't know where to go for them now. Been getting the Target brand goodfellow slim straight chinos cause they're cheap but they stretch out and get trashed quick even without skating in them.

I found a pair of 541's at the thrift shop and got em because they were a good deal, size, and color, but didn't think/know about the fit.
I tried em on and was like "WTF are these" but quickly realized they kick ass. Slim/straight around the calf and ankle but nice and medium-loose in the thigh/crotch. My favorite jeans so far.
Most days I wear 847's because my job's dress code requires slacks/pants, so the Dickies feel like a good middle ground lol
-
Dickies 874 may be straight, but I wouldn't go near them for a even vaguely slim fit. With Dickies I wear 872 for slim, but I'm 33/33, and wear 34/34, so they fit a bit looser than on most people.
Carhartt WIP Sid are an option if you want even slimmer, but too tight for me.

About 30% of the pants I own are baggy, I skate in those and wear slim straight-legs for an every-day fit
I am quite literally the exact same.
As a skinny dude, I realized movement is so much easier skating in loose pants, but for everyday wear I’m slim/regular. I’m a longtime proponent of “wear what fits your body” but the functionality of loose pants while skating can’t be denied.

I recently switched from 872 to 873 after years of slimmer pants, the only difference I notice is how wide across the leg opening
-
i rock my black skinnys to this day
tried skating them and they chafed my legs pre crotch blowout
-

Did you mean 873 may be straight (but are still loose in the leg?
874 - Original / Regular fit, sits on waist, tapered leg
873 - Slim straight, sits below waist, straight leg
872 - Slim fit, sits below waist, tapered leg
The funny thing is people are often calling the 874 relaxed or baggy now (even shops are listing it with those words), which I guess it is for me going a size up and just putting a belt in them, but the current trends in the fit of pants, along with where it has been and where it is going in terms of how tight / loose is quite interesting, from ultra loose, to ultra tight, then finding middle ground but then going this way and that again depending on who you are or what you want.
Any which way, Dickies sure have been one to bring out a number of different fitting pants more in recent years, compared to their original line (874) and even when 875 was the same style, a flat front no frills style, just bigger wider leg like the double knee without the added material and everything else. Now the 2020 era 875 has a new cut and completely different fit to what they were when they first came out back in the 00s as loose fit fashion pants.
Probably too much info, especially in a slim pants thread, but I just find it interesting anyway.
-
I wear the '92 denim for going out, and Surf Pants for errands when I want comfort. Big Boys are too baggy for me but I also do not want to go back to mid 2000-era fit of jeans. I'm not comfortable showing off my bulge. '93 denim is the perfect fit for me when I skate, and I haven't had crotch-ripping like I did when I wore Altamont/Emerica Reynolds jeans. However, I probably skate in Theories Lounge Pants the most just because I can get two pairs for the same price as one pair of Polar jeans.
It also depends on what kind of shoes you wear. If you're wearing puffy DC cupsoles, skinny jeans will probably look like shit.
-
I still use slim jeans especially on day to day life, also because most of the times only slim jeans have stretch/elastane and I can only wear pants with it.
-
Medium loose pants and I can coexist through whichever way the trend goes. I tend to stay away from slim straight pants tho cause thats what pickle ballers wear when not pickling.
-
501’s until I’m unable to speak & I’m taking my last breath & glance at those around me. Carhartt WIP Masters are also lovely. Straight fit is what an adult wears. For work, Dockers straight fit. I will say Former makes a nice straight fit. A tad on the looser side but very tailored & glaring quality.
-
I typically skate in shorts unless it's ridiculously cold and then I run athletic fit chinos from Gap. Otherwise I prefer Levis 541s; best fitting jeans I've ever had. Find them on ebay from time to time and they're better than new for me.
Once upon a time (90s/early 2000s) I would run the 874s or RedKaps to skate either cut-off or regular. I know I had a couple pairs of skinny fit jeans but never thought they looked all that good; just wore them when my wife thought they looked good on me (those days have passed).
-
I do both slim and big. Depending on my mood.
-
The Polar 89! Denim is out. Straight leg and regular fit.
-
When do the Polar ‘08 skinnies come out?
-
I wear either Levi’s 505s or Dickies 874s. I’m short and getting kinda old, so going the full loose/baggy trend just isn’t for me
-
whatever cut pants Bobby Dekyzer wears, is what I try to find. I’m not really sure specifically what pants/jeans he wears, but I do notice he skates in levi jeans sometimes. i guess it’s a dickies 874 type fit.
-
Straight for going out. slim for work. Baggy for skating, making art, and chilling around the house/ neighborhood.
I do feel like with wide/baggy becoming more mainstream I'm tempted to take the work pants up to a straight fit
-
I discovered the Target brand jeans and I absolutely love them. Really flexible and feel great. Plus theyere only $25.
-
I'll add since I've never seen mentioned on slap , LL bean has some solid pants for a reasonable price. Well made, good fit too.
https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/502921?page=mens-pants
Nice and high wasted so you never feel like you gotta hike em up to avoid stretching in the crotch when your squatting to pop. Got a pair of their classic fit cords recently that I enjoy wearing.
-
I would rock the kr3w erik Ellington Jean if I could find it
-
Slim / straight for non-skating
Shorts! But if I have too, regular / loose (with stretch) for skating
Having big quads compared to the average skater makes 'skate pant' selection difficult even more so for non-skate (everything becomes slim or tight) and very few companies offer an athletic fit.
I never did the big pants in the 90s either *shudder*
-
I do both slim and big. Depending on my mood.
This right here. Sometimes I'll rock the tight jeans and puffy shoe combo from back in the day. Then next day I'll have on baggie pants, whatever I'm feeling that day.
-
Can't imagine skating in jeans. The swampass. The chafing. The sweat stains. It's like running in jeans, or playing basketball: two minutes? Why not. Two hours? Yuck.
And yeah, some of the baggy pants are venturing into JNCO territory.
For regular wear I like 501s and such, or athletic cut.
To skate in, give me relaxed fit work pants. Cotton duck or ripstop. Carhartts. Wranglers. Lately my favorite skate pants are an old pair of bdu's.

Not sure about pants, but Levis 551 is a prime fit for thick quads, if you're looking for jeans. They taper fairly straight at the ankle, but nice and loose around knee to upper leg.
550s are my new favorite, but those are definitely relaxed/baggier

anyone got a picture of someone in the polar 89’s? been looking but cant find what they’d fit like
-
Slim, yes. Skinny, no. I feel like slim is just the middle between baggy and skinny so in a way it will never go out of style since the current trend will forever be ping-ponging between the extremes. I'm also old, so I don't feel any need to have the best drip at the skate park whatsoever. I started wearing my golf polos to skate because they wick away sweat better than my cotton skate T's. So, I suppose take my style advice with a grain of salt.
These are my go-to skate pant: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Slim-Fit-Casual-Stretch/dp/B07BJKXRHN/
They're slightly slimmer than Dickies, and they're pretty cheap so if I tear the knees, I feel no need to hold on to them.
One rule to live by is that pants have to have stretch in them. "Elastane", "spandex", something in combination with cotton to make normal looking pants more athletic feeling.
-
I came to vouch for a slightly different pair of Amazon brand chinos. These ones claim 'flat front', but two of the pairs i've gotten have the crease like Dickies.
https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Slim-Fit-Wrinkle-Resistant-Flat-Front/dp/B07757LYY8/ref=sr_1_6?crid=24XIZGVOS4NJF&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Xa6jNBtD1WzVc6UTgxQ7C6OP_y_gnS3daEBjKAvTaB2MUD--toVnRqj60SC0xZ8TrAqqc-ADNljTJG9U6hdvR96kKOwF_DygClqFEteZNfws9RtaKTkRRxyk1gpMq97y-9QAeWHV33aWZt24I-Dbd18NPz6bMQIRn_7bYH3PnEhbzcFDimhDxGBNmA0IRYKuIIWUJpNQJTgS5AgeVFZ261Oit6wJmym5uixr4SeB_JPHBGAshpQ-s3AWTZVOIxkR7ocAFjPrHteRF1Flhn6rz22-3dEjuAwuia6chJuQdOA.dSCZYSK4lSJO8Ax7TiuKb-pABIuNbmmV6-NNkmIa794&dib_tag=se&keywords=slim%2Bfit%2Bchino%2Bmen%27s&qid=1710260876&sprefix=slim%2Bfit%2Bchino%2Bmen%27%2Caps%2C141&sr=8-6&th=1
These are on the looser side of slim/straight, if you ask me.

Skating in tight, tight, denim 100%-cotton jeans (like Levi's '501 Women's Super Skinny Sky High Waisted Jeans') makes you feel like an armored creature. The way they feel on your legs also makes you adopt a crablike skate style, overly engaging the glutes. It is like a wearable sauna to feel them slowly dry in your AC-less car on the drive home, especially after a session under the hot Texas sun.
Depending on how restrictive they are, they may add stability around your ankles by reducing ankle mobility. They are also more fun to take off when they’re soaking wet with sweat. Sometimes I opt to shower in post-session skinny jeans, so I'll lather up soap on them. Then, I'll grab the belt buckles and pull up while jumping up and down to simultaneously exfoliate my legs and clean the jeans.
When your jeans are skinny as hell, they double as resistance training like those plastic exercise bands. It’s always leg day when you wear skinny jeans out skating.
-
bought some of those brixton pants with the little cinch waist closing thing. they were straight legged but looked like a box at the bottom. Took a couple inches off and made a nice taper for myself
feel like as long as they taper down at the bottom I dont mind too much
also
since trends are cyclical I say in maybe another five years or so skinnys will be back

You just gotta wear what suits your body.
Danny Garcia killed it with the straight fit pants in this
https://youtu.be/UnBUZo2FEw0
I think about this clip a lot when I wear 501’s. Mine are a tad slimmer than DGar’s but I got TTS & let them loosen over time. Slim strain/straight forever. Levi 501’s & Carhartt WIP Masters for the win on this. I have some former trousers too but sometimes they feel a tad loose. I do like the j crew factory straight pant but those are my work trousers.
-
When I first started skating I wore dickies and old dress pants and stuff. During the baker 3 era I wore a lot of 501s/505s, then I got some rvca spanky's and some k-slims, both of which stretched a lot more than the Levi's, but the Levi's were from the thrift store and the skate jeans were expensive. The rvcas were thin and i patched the butt up a bunch, the kr3ws were real thick and had so much spandex the ass would diaper out after a day of skating. then i just started rocking dickies and old dress pants again. Got a couple pairs of Ben Davis and Carhartts in rotation. Some of them like the Ben Davis and Dickies fit real straight, whereas the Carhartts are looser. I just can't hang with the lower rise a lot of the tailored looking pants have, and I destroy pants so much I don't want to get hooked on a style that won't be cheaply and easily available. My 2c
That being said you can get well fitting and good looking pants and jeans on Uniqlo for a really good price most of the time, and they'll hem them to whatever length you want.

the superior pant. oh the depths of depravity we have found ourselves in.

My 2c

+1 to Uniqlo I love skating in the slim selvedge stretch jawns. They aren't the best quality but I usually get a year or so out of them both skating and casual wear. I have big ass thighs so the only reason I have to retire them is cus of crotch blowouts. Tried skating Dickies 873/874 for a bit but would always get holes/rips pretty quickly.

Uniqlo is solid for sure, but not the highest quality. But at 20-40 for pants what do we expect
Dickies are hit or miss. The sizing and quality can be wildly off. I've had a few really good ones though, or I've had ones that fit good but fall apart. I've tried on some that were baggy on me in the same size be way up my butt, it's wild. My solution ordering online is to just get the longest inseam possible in my usual sizes, so the chances of a more comfortable top block are increased. Nowadays I just get them at thrift stores and wear a belt. I have big thighs and calves for my size from backpacking and cycling and if I get Dickies tts they fit high and slim. So do the wrangler 936 jeans and wranchers.
I think for the slim/tapered/straight pants, like when the rest of your wardrobe fits the way your tailored suit fits, the rises almost always seem too low. I even think the 501/505 waist is too low. Just me though, I don't wear them up on my waist all the time but if I'm working outside or need to do some karate ass shit I can just tighten the belt up.
It'd be cool if Levi's did their cowboy 517 jeans in a straight leg and not boot cut. There's a little mechanical stretch from the polyester content. I have no idea how I skated in 100% cotton 501's for as long as I did.
Idk my money's still on Uniqlo for having sharp-looking slim and tapered cuts that are comfortable and affordable for skating
