Title: Sun Ra appreciation thread
Post by: yghartsyrt on October 19, 2023, 05:38:14 AM
Found nothing on the board and I’m wondering, if there are fellow slappers also enjoying my favorite visitor from Saturn.
Besides the usual classics as space is the place or Nuclear war or the discipline recordings, I often return to this track

Any fans here?

What’s your favorite sun ra phase. I’m torn between the early big band-esque type and the late 60 to mid 70 free/spiritual phase. Not much a fan of the late fusion phase nor the bebop inspired phase

That was great. Loved the edit and the skating was on point, too. Way ahead of the hype curve with the wallies. Thanks for sharing

Top notch cover design, too - per usual.

That sounds like quite the experience. Space is the place is my go to record, when going to bed stoned. The movie is equally good, but haven’t seen it in ages.

I tried to get into Sun Ra in the mid 2010s and they never really caught hold for me. I did only listen to a few songs though. my taste in music has developed since that time, so I'm down to give them another try... if I wanted to give them another try, and I do, what would you suggest I listen to first?

That’s a tough question to ask, since his output is spread between so many different styles. What may be a good way into sun ra, is the singles compilation, which features songs from every era.

My favorite starting point would be “space is the place” though, but I’m a sucker for the combination of cosmic freak-out of the title track and the hauntingly beautiful songs such as the “images” track.

If you want a really mellow record try “live in Rome 77” if you want a real powerhouse go for “wake up angels - live at arbor jazz fest” - everything seems to be played twice as fast on this record

@mattchew : Lanquidity is also amazing.
