Title: Skatefolio: An Interactive Database for Skate Videos
Post by: joshk on October 24, 2023, 07:30:59 AM
I've been working with engineers to build Skatefolio, an interactive database for skate videos. Skaters + filmmakers get more recognition on here. You can also easily watch every clip Jake Johnson’s put out.

Our welcome page (https://skatefol.io/mission) explains it all best. Shoot me a PM with your email if you’d like to try the site before we go public.

Also here's a demo.

11/15 Update: Skatefolio (https://skatefol.io) just went public.

11/28 Update: Our SOTY page (https://skatefol.io/soty) just went live. We've Clip Mapped all the footage released this year from 30 top SOTY contenders. Adding names and updating numbers as parts continue to drop.

This seems like an insanely complicated project to make happen. Can't wait to check it out.

Can’t believe Kalis has this much time on his hands to develop web databases

Cheers Luke! It's come a long way since we last spoke. Just rolled out a feature connecting people's skater and filmmaker profiles that I think you'll appreciate.

Been a year in the making with some incredible engineer friends of mine. Still have so many more features we want to add, but it's finally in a place where we're ready to show it off.

This looks dope, I hope it gains enough traction to get every major video fully mapped out

Imagine every second of every video mapped out precisely:
- name of skater
- sponsor at the moment with a zoom in on every bit of period accurate gear, bonus if it calls out that the skaters was sponsored by brand x but was riding brand y
- song title
- link to YT / Insta
- Google pin for the spot with recent photo
- name of filmer and the setup they used

Probably way more than the website can deliver, but what a dream!

To start, our major goals are having all skate videos, past and present, mapped out with skaters and every filmer sufficiently credited. We also want up-to-date sponsors on every skater.

As a result, you should be able to watch a titleless video, find someone you think is sick, and go see all their other footage/current sponsors/IG on their profile. Same goes for filmers with their library of projects. I hope this'll create a better pipeline for sponsorships, more gigs for filmers, and increased transparency for what's going on in skateboarding.

We also want to make sure this happens with a heavy international focus, hence our 'World of Skating' tool. There's so much incredible skating happening outside the typical geographic haunts (Africa, Latin America, and SE Asia for example) and we want to promote local talent beyond the globetrotting major pros.

As for spots + music, that's already being done super well. Would be cool to one day partner with SVS and a spot site, integrating everything, but that'll take some time.

How would you address the need for spot secrecy with riders / filmers?

Tagging videos by city is in the pipeline. As for individual clips, just mapping the skaters feels like the right place to start.

This is way far out and we'll need to think much more about how to approach this properly.

Initial thoughts – in the age of skate spot websites, I think a city's famous/obvious spots should be mapped out. No need to gatekeep the MACBAs and Blubbas of the world. Hidden gems should be at the discretion of the people who find them. No one should be pressured to share their spots, but for those who want to, they should have that opportunity.

Yeah. Skatefolio achieves its full potential with a lot of users adding + curating content, so we've built a system of permission levels to minimize bad content.

Average users are just viewers who can only watch. Get an account and you can build your own profile. Moderators can add, but not delete, content throughout the site. Admin have deleting power. While we refine these permissions, I'm making everyone who joins from Slap a moderator.

It would be cool if you could make the videos full screen in the website! I am aware this is an early version just thought I would chime in keep doing the lords work Josh Katz!

Cool, sounds like a nice way to approach access rights for this project. I meant is the source code made publicly available so that other developers can openly contribute?

Ah sorry for the confusion. We're keeping it proprietary for now.

A full screen player is crucial IMO. Currently in the works!

Also if anyone else has feature suggestions, site critiques, or questions, I'd love to hear them!

Appreciate everyone from the forum who reached out to help while we were still in beta.

I know you'd probably need some AI trained on tony hawks pro skater. but I've always wanted to be able to type in a trick name and get all the clips of that trick.

Haven't heard of any bugs lately, but shoot me a PM if you've found one.

Also if you're on mobile, I recommend using wifi (or having really good service). Clip Mapped videos are hard to watch with bad service since they require more rendering than normal.

Our SOTY page is up.

We've Clip Mapped all the footage released this year from 30 top SOTY contenders. This is especially helpful for skaters buried in montage appearances, like Max and Cyrus (7 montages each). Jhancarlos dropped 13:08 of montage footage this year.

We also have the exact clip count + footage duration for these skaters (which'll be updated as parts drop). Beyond the arbitrary awarding of SOTY, this is about cherishing a great year of skating.

Definitely missing some names. We'll continue adding skaters – especially if more people help with this process.

This is such a good idea as long as you keep it free for people looking to see the vids.

Incorporate the skater’s and companies Instagram and TikToks.

You could sell the high level impression analytics to agents and Corporate Marketers.

First time using it and the concept is really cool

One thing that's happening is that not all videos show me the skater in question - e.g. I'm searching for Louie Lopez in the searchbar and go to their skater profile with the "Anthology" on the right side showing every video that he's in. While most of them show me only LL clips when I click for instance Volcom's True to This or The Good Homies it shows me the full video and not just LL clips.

Maybe you guys are still working on those videos and that's why it's not mapped yet

Will continue to explore the website

Much appreciated! We haven't Clip Mapped all of Louie yet. Some shorthand for the site:

-If you see a red film icon next to the video, it's been Clip Mapped. You'll also see "Fully Clip Mapped" in the top right of the video
-If you see a red check mark next to a skater, we've mapped their entire careers (currently only Jake Johnson and Tom knox are completed, many others in the works)
-Sometimes we've only mapped one skater in a larger video. There's no icon for this, but know we've done this for every 2023 video from every skater on our SOTY page.

Skatefolio’s come a long way since launching 5 months ago, so figured we’re due for an update. Some cool things we’ve dropped:

Thanks to all the Slap users who’ve been offering helpful feedback since our beta! We’re constantly working to improve the site, so it’s made a huge difference.
