Sup guys?
I made a video for those that want to grip their own board and are not sure how to do it. Let's be real, we like to set our boards up entirely ourselves and needing the skate shop to grip your board for you feels like a beginner type move. Totally fine if that's your thing, but for those that wanna know how to do it themselves.. this is the tutorial:

Lmk what you think

Asking the store guy to grip your board is the equivalent of asking the mechanic to change your wiper blades
-
Normalize asking the guy at the shoe store to
tie velcro your shoes for you

Posting something like this is sure to invite ridicule, but since you're soliciting our opinion, I'll respond.
You don't seem very experienced at applying grip. The finished job is good enough to ride but shows that you're not qualified to post a tutorial. Even though I don't do this in the real world, I'd probably use a smooth cut file, punch awl, and cut away from myself if I were to demonstrate proper procedures to beginners. Even when you're cutting away from your body, your arm is right in front of the blade for some reason.
Regarding "XS Progression", the name itself and combined "extreme sports" themed channel is at least 25 years too late (and wouldn't have worked then either).

while your intention of flooding the internet with yet another great how-to-video is admirable, this one is useless, since it has been done to perfection by damian bravo a long time ago

the way you cut your grip is insane, youre gonna slit your wrists if you slip. cut away from yoself fool!
-
Wow you cut the grip crazy and you use the backing paper to press the grip onto the board lol
All kinds of wrong lol.
You gotta hold the razor with one hand (my right) and hold the cut strip of grip with the other (my left) to keep tension on it to get a clean cut. You should cut towards yourself, it's just easier. Cutting grip "the safe way" (aka cutting away from yourself) seems like it'd be kinda awkward and hard to get a nice cut. I've never tried to cut grip that way, seems unnecessary and there is like zero chance you'd cut yourself (if you know what you're doing obv).
If you're a little kid or a parent that doesn't know shit, go ahead and ask the person at the shop to grip your board. There's no shame in it and that's literally their job. Now if you've been skating for a few years and know how to do it, then yeah that's dumb lol.

Should I also stop asking my barista to steam the milk because I can walk back there and do it my damn self? Or the bartender to not fill my pint because any idiot knows how to pull down on the tap?

Thanks I hadn't watched that video in years, Darrell Stanton introducing the world to the Dolphin Flip

If the shop is busy and you look competent enough to do it yourself, you should probably just do it. If it isn't busy then the clerk will normally offer as it allows you to browse their other stuff for sale while they grip away.

What if i'm into watching other men grip my board

Ingredients
1 cup (120g) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
3/4 cup (64g) unsweetened cocoa, Dutch-process or natural
1 3/4 cups (347g) granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon espresso powder, optional; for enhanced chocolate flavor
3 large eggs
8 tablespoons (113g) unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup (50g) vegetable oil
2 teaspoons King Arthur Pure Vanilla Extract
1 cup (170g) semisweet chocolate chips, optional
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9" x 13" pan.
Put all of the ingredients into a large bowl in the order in which they're written. Stir, then beat the mixture until it's smooth.
Spoon the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake the brownies for about 25 minutes, or until they're just barely beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan. A toothpick inserted into the center will come out clean or with a few moist crumbs clinging to it; you shouldn't see any wet batter.
Remove the brownies from the oven; let them cool completely before cutting.
Store any leftover brownies, well-wrapped, at room temperature for 5 to 6 days. Freeze for longer storage.

Grip cuckolding. Finally, a new category!
-
you don't have the proper technique
hence the shitty results

Same. I'm pretty busy with work, wife, kids, school... my time is limited and I'd rather spend the 20 mins skating instead of laying out everything, gripping the board, cleaning up my mess.
But if the shop's busy, I'm not going to hinder a possible sale by taking up the clerk's time doing something I can do.

Facts. I also have them velcro my shoes for me. At least I grip my own board though

some of you including OP could learn how to embed youtube videos correctly

I offer a free username: Jack The Gripper.

many years ago was feeling lazy and asked the shop if they can grip for me, they wanted to charge me. from there on i just did it myself and never again bother to ask.
-
I work at a shop and when I first started it puzzled me why a customer would want me to grip their board. Don't they wanna do it themselves? That is what I always did when I got a board.
Then I saw some other customers grip their own boards and it was hard to watch. Bad cuts, taking chunks out of the wood. Some people cannot grip a board if their life depended on it.
-
How the heck am I supposed to get the grizzly bear in the right spot by myself? Don’t show that in your fancy internet video.
-
I like to do my own grip job in the shop, in front of the dude, so he learns how do it correctly through observation.
-
Thanks for your help. Another mystery solved.
-
I've done it before. Orchard has good grippers.
I had limited time in the bowl they saw me panicking because I definitely didn't wanna carry all that shit on the bus. They offered I excepted.
Usually I have to full mojo it myself. I never take a razor to my board. I feel it's better luck to use a truck or the side of a screwdriver.
I don't even carry sharp objects anymore. I don't need that karma anymore. No one's plottingon a fool post Graff. I actually like most other writers these day. Just not the new ones. Lolol.
I have a blessed file rn. I've used it to clean up rails when I was a kid so it has mad spirit within it's bones.
I gotta call on the spirits so my board will be less likely to bite my ass in the future.
The Ben board got the whole shabang. It's too fuckin heavy to piss of day one. I can barely flip this thing. Switch flip is never happening on it unless I shrink my wheels.
State ain't paving roads anytime soon.
For street cats who don't plaza all day I think small wheel is over.

So you just grind the whole thing off? You'd need to scrape it for an hour without a file.

You don’t enjoy doing it? I like the whole ritual of it- and it’s always satisfying to crank out a perfect grip job.
Gotta enjoy the little things in life y’know?
-
I don’t mean to pile on because they’re already in here making gifs of you but the “XS” make me think of “extra small” and the name reads “extra small progression” which I’m sure is the opposite of your intent with the videos.

for certain.
there are many things i can do, that i don’t always want to do.
if the shop offers, i say yes. they’ll do a better job. i don’t do polar grip.
i’m good with either way.

Wanna just get in a pointless argument about it anyways because this is the internet?

In my 19 years of skating, I have never applied grip well and at this point it’s a running joke with my friends but I refuse to ask anyone to do it because why, as a man, are you asking another grown man to grip your board.

Yeah. I been doing it so long I got it in 3 passes. It's a thing now tho.
File is definitely the move tho
