Title: Are hollow kingpins harder to remove?
Post by: fulfillthedream on December 04, 2023, 07:11:04 AM: I have some Ace AF1 baseplates, want to convert them into inverted kingpins. I recall someone on here trying to remove kingpins and having trouble. Someone pointed out how hollow kingpins on a cast plate can be harder. is this true?

You could try heating up the kingpin. Use a torch or hold it over a candle. Shoukd help them separate.

You can usually borrow a tool like that for free from a big chain auto parts store like autozone, oreillys, etc.

I ordered one off amazon and it was too short. I saw one video on youtube and the guy has a link on the ball joint separator he used.

and damn i didn't know that you could borrow tools from those stores. Ill update how that works on here.

A sacrificial kingpin nut.
A hard surface you can hammer on.

Thread the sacrificial kingpin nut nylock first onto the threads. Tighten until the nut sits 1-2mm higher than the top of the kingpin. Put the baseplate on a hard surface, kingpin facing up. Safety squints. Hold the baseplate and hit the nut firmly and hard repeatedly with the hammer. It may take a minute or two of swinging.

If you forgo the sacrificial nut, the threads will become peened, and you'll have to file them down to fully remove the kingpin. Good luck!
