I think many have noticed but Jamie Griffin has been completely inactive on the networks since his victory during the batb.. What is really going on ? Demotivation by being too much in the competitive spirit ? Too much waiting ? I heard that he was in a depression or something.. If anyone has any info.
Sad to see such a talented guy who seemed to be madly in love disappear like that from the skateboarding world.. I hope the negative comments haven't broken him psychologically..
-
My first instinct was to reply with a snarky, "who?" but then I realized that might not be very helpful so I decided to just stay quiet.
-
Maybe he's just taking some R&R?
-
I heard he also left hopking.... maybe to something super lunar???
-
Jamie if you see this please send us a message and let us know you’re okay.
-
Let’s just be happy he’s gone and move on with our lives
-
I read elsewhere, pretty sure here on slap, that he was slipping into a party lifestyle after BATB and wanted to go to his parents' house and realign his life.
Hopefully he's doing well.

Seeing some responses full of hate is disgusting.. how can you attack a skate because you don't like his style..
-
I don’t hate the guy, I wish him nothing but good health and success in life. I just never want to see him skateboard again.
-

The internet has a tendency to give people who, otherwise, wouldn't say shit to someone's face the agency to be a semi-anonymous asshole. Slap is no exception.

That’s like a core tenet of being a skateboarder. At least according to the old dudes on slap. Wait I’m in my thirties now, I am an old dude on slap. Fuck , I gotta go rethink my life .

Leave the homeboy in peace and let him be.

It’s the thought that counts.

He seems like a nice dude, hope he’s doing ok
-
Hope he's alright and it's just a social media break or something
-
Does anyone know why the split between Jamie and Hop King?
Hope Jamie's doing alright. He seems like a lovely fella.
I also massively respect that he doesn't conform his approach to what's core or cool, and totally does his own thing whether on carpet or concrete.
-
If I was him I'd just go film something while the board is doing what you want it too.
Take too much time off and you gotta rebuild all that. No one is immune
-
He'll return when the berrics comes back, if they come back
-
He'll return when the berrics comes back, if they come back
I need to see Berra do a backside flip. Otherwise I just don't care.
Also of the grid needs to comeback. That was the best berries show.

The thought of Jamie griffin partying out because of a batb win is pretty funny, hopefully not true

So long as you film it.
Hop king should be about puking. And screwed up tracks.

He’s locked in his shed

He would've had to have been really searching to find such negative comments in the sea of praises he gets on Instagram/YouTube.
On the other hand, if he was banking on gaining some more serious sponsors in London/LA and got told something along of the lines of his style of skating wouldn't cut it, especially if by someone he looks up to, then I could see it wounding him pretty deep.
Perhaps he really did just party too hard, in any case I'm sure he'll have a story to tell for his absence.

He wouldn't have had to search very far to find a couple comments shitty enough to make him wanna dip out, it's not like this place is skateboarding's skull and bones society....just one google search away

Winter in Ireland sucks, but it didn't really stop him this much before. He could still skate his garage or an indoor carpark.
-
Some of his clips are really out of this world like the shit he did at macba was insane. I know hardflip late flip kinda goofy trick but fine the Danny Brady set was pretty well executed. He reminds me kind of like Rodney Mullen questionable era he’s starting to really put together street with his freestyle ability. It’s very difficult to mess these two things together as both take a lifetime to master
-
how about everybody here goes to fuck themselves?
seeing this dudes skateboarding real life is mind altering. noone here can even comprehend, and dont give me the style is whack bullshit. noone cares. you dance however you like.
-
I was not a fan of Jamie b/c I figured he was a && type character with circus tricks.
But the way he played his BATB finals, the way he managed the Cariuma orcs thrown at him throughout the qualifiers and his gentleman-y demeanor overall won me over.
Hope he is doing well and I can't wait to see him three-peat!

I skated with Jamie a few days after his BATB win and the day before he left to go home. He definitely seemed a bit off for someone who just won a contest, although it be BATB its still a pretty notable achievement. Times I've skated with him in the past he seemed like a pretty cheerful, happy go lucky dude who just loves skating. This most recent time he didn't seem to show many emotions. I was asking him some things that I had wondered about this years BATB and none of them were good. For example, those boards being sold with the finalists faces on them, none of those skaters got a penny from that. Also, anyone who had to travel for their match had to pay for their own airline tickets and hotels where in the past I believe that stuff was taken care of. Seemed like the whole thing wasnt worth it to him and I dont blame him for feeling that way. Whatever he's going through I wish him the best.

That skate you attack because you don’t like his style? It can do a hamstand
Ed: I do hope guy is okay. Mental health ain’t no joke and he genuinely doesn’t deserve the hate lobbed his way. He’s not my favorite skater (very few are) but I will say I genuinely felt gross after watching GH review his part. It just felt like bullying.

Shocked nobody called them out on that shit. Are dudes in the industry really that afraid of Borra/Scientology ruining their rep like that? That's your fuckin name on a board. Makes sense that last year PROD made up that Covid excuse to not have to fly out from CPH

Hope everything is alright with him.
Honestly, he should retire from BATB and focus on making parts. He's a really talented skater, and I feel like the BATB bullshit gets him a lot of hate.
-
Maybe he's just looking for a chill girl.
Anyway I hope he's doing well, i love flatground skating so he's pretty up there in my book. Alas, the irish are no stranger to the grip of melancholy. That perpetual wetness leaves a stained soul.

what I'd really like to know is what is his technique with 360 flips? they flip almost completely vertically. like the impossible flip but without the impossible...

Thank you for this answer which clarifies a lot of things ! Would he have felt the fact of having done all this without really any help and support then ? Sometimes it can happen when you get too deep into the industry that you become jaded and disgusted. You lose your enjoyment of it. I think it's a combination of everything morally that he had to endure. Maybe a little “too full” of everything..

His part is just incredible.. Criticize him because the tricks are technical and go in all directions.. It reminds me of my beginnings, I was a fan of Rodney Mullen and the local skaters hated him and made fun of me because I loved it.. No matter the style, every pro skater is talented because god knows how hard skating is.. I can just as enjoy watching Jamie Griffin and other guys with weird tricks, and watching the baker guys skating.. Besides my favorite skaters remain the whole Baker / Deathwish team, and as I said, I love Jamie Griffin because this guy impresses me with his talent and his total control.. He's a bit of a Rodney Mullen of our generation !

I find them so unique.. I love their 360 flips !

Haters hate cause they’re weak ass bitches. They just haven’t realized that yet. Always been that way. Griffin is more genuine than 10 artificial socal skaters who try to repeat what’s already been done. And GH is one of them. GH stick was fun for like 3 vids. Now he’s just a miserable dude who becomes what he hates. A lame narcissistic influencer.
That said, I guess something has not been ok with griffin before he got famous. To get that consistent with these tricks you have to go harder than a normal person would. Same way Goggins has demons to go that far and never stop. It’s not healthy human behaviour. It’s something sinister that drives these kind of people. And when they get it all, they fall into an empty abyss cause they realise that it’s never enough.
Anyway, hope he’s ok or getting better if it’s true that he’s not ok right now.

I think i posted this elsewhere before but from speaking to people who know him, the London party lifestyle was just starting to fuel a bit of a mental health spiral, and he decided to head back to Ireland to chill and get his head right, which is fair enough.
The mixed attention off the back of BATB must have been a lot to deal with, and he's clearly someone who took certain comments about his skating to heart, as seen through the titles of his edits, the conscious effort to include different skating in them to appease critics. Must be a headfuck trying to make it and having to choose a direction to go in based on what everyone wants you to do, rather than what you necessarily enjoy.
As far as I know, the parting of ways with Hop King was amicable, i guess at the time it was quite a bit of pressure on top of all the BATB shite. He's getting product flowed/sponsored by an EU shop called Skatepro, so at least he's sorted for bloards.

Wonder why some people participated in the deck thing if some did not, assuming you didn’t get paid either way.
Anytime money is involved with the berrics, you assume it’s bad, yet it’s always worse than you imagined.

Disgraceful shit by the Berrics selling boards with people's names and faces on them and not giving any percentage!

Glad to hear it likely went amicable with Hop King, perhaps the door is open if Jamie would like to go back.
Great point about the title of his edits. Sucks to hear the criticisms may have weighed on him, he's only human, no one's skating is perfect.
I wish him all the best, hope to see him back soon.
On the off-chance he happens to read this, so many people in Ireland were hyped to see you blow-up, and win the Berrics twice. No of us would have imagined someone coming from a rural town, of an already rural County, in Ireland, could have foreseen it. Keep doing you Jamie, and don't let the critics get to you. Legend!

I should have worded that better, but I was more alluding to his trick selection rather than his style pulling them off. It is difficult to make a lot of those complicated flip tricks look good on film let alone photogenic regardless of who you are, even when top tier pros occasionally throw out some complicated flip trick they will sometimes get shit for it depending on what it was (or even who did it), for example Shane's sw double tre at the Santa Monica triple set gets a bit of criticism here.
Those complicated flip tricks however are essentially what sets Griffin apart from other skaters, he certainly isn't pushing the envelope in any other area of skating although he definitely has some potential with his ledge game that being said.
-
Hope he’s doing alright. Shame on the borracs for doing him dirty but I can’t say I’m surprised.
-
Hey there I live in Ireland and he’s doing great. He was on the Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty after he won and he did a lot of radio in the weeks after. He’s been doing the pub and club circuit doing live appearances and meet and greets at schools and Sunday markets.
There’s a Jamie Griffin film coming out next year which also features Conhuir Lynn and Dave Murphy from Cork.

Happy to read he's fine

No of us would have imagined someone coming from a rural town, of an already rural County, in Ireland, could have foreseen it. Keep doing you Jamie, and don't let the critics get to you. Legend!
What county is he from ?
Donegal
Jaysus. Probably the wettest county there is. Not much going on down there.

Potential name for an upcoming Lakai shoe
The "Bath"

Hey there I live in Ireland and he’s doing great. He was on the Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty after he won and he did a lot of radio in the weeks after. He’s been doing the pub and club circuit doing live appearances and meet and greets at schools and Sunday markets.
There’s a Jamie Griffin film coming out next year which also features Conhuir Lynn and Dave Murphy from Cork.
I love Red Bull / Blueprint > Slave era Conhuir.
Really seemed to develop his style/comfort on a board after hanging out with Arto etc.
As another irish skater - it's great to hear he's still keeping his head up.

Hey real quick does Jamie Griffin use normal deodorant or anti-perspirant deodorant with aluminum chlorohydrate?
Asking for a friend.

Colin Farrell will play Jamie and Brendan Gleeson will play his blue collar father who just wants his son to “stop playing with his toy in the garage” and come to work at the mill for an honest wage

Conhuir was such a good dude on $lave and I never realized at the time his previous contributions to skating because I was too young for the incredible era of blueprint
-
I'd like to see him comeback with wacky tricks in and out of mannys
-
Jamie is sick. Im a huge fan. I hope he’s okay and doing well.
-
I hear he’s in a deep training camp for an MMA showdown with Evan Fogerty at portabello

Berra has to be played by Barry Keoghan or Cillian Murphy

And then they all head to the local pub to sing and drink, films ends with drone shot through the pub window where we can see Colin/Jamie drinking a pint of stout in his mill workers outfit.
Drone then flies away from the pub, over a quaint Donegal village at dusk, continues to Jamies house (which the viewer will recognize from the opening scene of the movie), flies over the house and then into the garden where we can see a part of a skateboard sticking out of the dustbin. Then the credits.

Maybe if we burried a potato in not the usual place?
We could try the usual place but we might get dr. tech
-
I'm just thinking what do we gotta bury to get ah Tom to get back to skatebloarding Diagon Alley and leave these exposed spots again?
I almost thought fuck. How did that obviously East AF kid re spawn on the west coast fucking Wales?
I gotta learn that trick.
I wanna go to fuckin Italy. Go to the neo street capital of Europe and fight The Brothers of Italy.
No joke we gotta get rid of those fuckin Fascist fucks before it's too late.
We gotta get all those rippers on blands and help them escape.
Baker Violet could buy me a ticket to go scout the continent for a second Vince and Nils.
Those kids are 1000% the future

He didn’t have much footage in it but his clips in Lost and Found [whch were hidden in the DVD menu] I always enjoyed. That whole video is already 55mins long (and is mostly excellent though) and I don’t think he was officially on very long before its release - which might explain the small amount of footage.
There was a Redbull dvd he was in around that time too- Under Wraps I think.
Also- great to see more Irish pals here too :)

Does anyone have any recent updates on Jamie's situation ?
Unbelievable to see that it's already been November since he completely disappeared.. A guy who was so passionate about skating, sad.
I hope he still skates despite his non-presence on the social networks

Unfortunately not.
I reckon he's still skating regardless of Insta. His solo garage and driveway sessions suggest he might be the type who doesn't necessarily always need to skate with others or post online to feel stoked on skating itself.
Hope he's doing well either way.

jamie, bro, give a fucking signal.

He fanny broke.
He’s probably in the garage feverishly working on Craic Skateboards.

craic skateboards ;D

Skateboarding is not a lucrative career. Unless you're lucky enough to be at the level of Nyjah or Shane O'Neill you're gonna be couch surfing making less than minimum wage. Mr. Griffin pursued his dream of being a flatground tryhard but at what cost?
-
There still no update on this guy? Is he in the south of France or something?
-
His part is just incredible.. He's a bit of a Rodney Mullen of our generation !
more flips equals more better and more harder
maybe a guy that quadruple flips on flat should win trick of the year this time
-
Maybe the GH hate got to him, the review on his 'slainte' part sitting at 206k views where the actual part is on 187k lol

The poor lad is very unwell, do not expect a comeback.

That's to say .. ? If possible, have a little explanation on this.. :(

don't mean to state the obvious but if buddy has gone dark on insta and isn't taking interviews about his 'struggles'... it means he wants to be left the fuck alone. if you're a fan or care about him in some way just respect that.
although I know that is a lot to ask of slap. most of you are drama hounds and can't help yourself when you catch a whiff of ill will or struggle.
let Jamie be guys. threads like this are damn near an invasion of privacy

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but I bumped the thread because I’m a fan of the guy and was hoping someone knew something. Not ment to be negative attention on my part.
-
If he's unwell it's none of our business how or why. Dude telling us shouldn't have told us unless Jamie was cool with it. None of us are entitled to what anyone is doing at any moment in time, unless they're one of those insufferable snapchat celebrities who sign their lives away.

So should I stop honking my horn outside his house?

the only time this is acceptable is if you have one of those horns from the early 1900's that go "UH-WOOOOO-GAH!"

Poor guy hope he gets better

I feel like maybe if he wanted to live the hermit life he shouldn't have entered the public eye by winning the biggest flatground contest 2 years in a row. I think the people deserve an update from our flatground champ. It's like if Cody Rhodes disappeared after finishing the story
-
maybe he went back to his shed, somehow installed a big downrail there and will have his epic comeback as a well rounded skater
-

The more like when cody left after the stardust era. When he went his own way and reinveted himself. I don't think Jamie gonna be the face of this industry any time soon tho. But the stardust character probably more close to what Jamie is when it comes to the respect of his peers and the fans and his expectations of notirerty vs the reality of how people preceive his "gimmick"

I was going to make a joke about Jamie going away for a bit, then reemerging, showing up in some independent shit, doing some high profile shit in Japan, dyeing his hair blonde, starting his own thing, then returning to the largest stage possible but that actually sounds like a solid skateboarding business plan so I'm going to say do that.
-
He's in his shed pondering tail stall-trick out combinations unfathomable to mere mortals like ourselves. Let him rest.
-
maybe he's going down the Tom Penny path when he disappeared at his peak...

I don't think anyone deserves anything from him. Hate when people say "the people deserve more an explanation" when talking about athletes, celebrities, etc... they don't owe anyone anything. The people are the ones who need to stop caring so much about what these public figures are doing.
