Any (ex) pro skaters that are really smart, erudite, well spoken, kinda the way Ted Barrow is or just scientifically certified geniuses? I know Rodney Mullen will probably come up and somebody's gonna shitpost Mickey Papa's TED talk. I'd say Grosso in his own way seemed a lot smarter and considerate even than what he let on.

sorry, although the fourth post in that thread is an ABP as well. maybe rehashing subjects every now and again ain't that bad. Also college degrees don't really make you very smart automatically, with all due respect. Ocean Howell was a good mention in the other thread tho. Still have to read his book.

The link to the ABD is dead. Yes I know you don't need a high IQ to get a degree, especially if you come from money/power.

Mark suciu wishes he was smart
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Mark's skating. The style is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the tricks will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Mark's aesthetic outlook, which is deftly woven into his skating - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of his parts, to realize that they're not just boring- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Mark truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Mark's existencial catchphrase "It lacks tastefulness" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as his genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a habitat tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
-
if a pro can speak at least 3 different languages, like tom penny speaking Spanish, English, and French, id say they have some level of IQ.
just cause a pro graduated college doesnt mean theyre smart. im sure they are smart, but there are different levels to intelligence. some people excel in school and then flounder in the real world

Rodney Mullen is a genius.
John Rattray seems like a smart dude.
Not sure it that makes him high IQ but GH is quick AF with the smart hating...
-
Are you asking naturally smart as in IQ? Or smart as in educated?
There are a good amount of people with college degrees in the skating community.
Like someone said, Suicu likes to think he's Will Hunting when really, he's the dude will schooled at the Harvard bar.
-
There was a pro vert skater in the 90's named Darren Menditto who is a physician. He was never on my radar but for some reason I always remember this short article about him holding down pro status and doing med school/residency at the same time.
-
Suciu is my favorite skater and I think all the hate is unwarranted. I've read and watched as many of his interviews as I can, I dont think he comes across as someone who is trying to sound smart when he talks about his interests outside of skating. He just sound like someone who has interests outside of skating.

Darren Menditto is a local legend in the Philly area vert scene. He's pushing 50 and still ripping. I believe he also manages the department of the hospital he works at, so he's like the head doctor there.

Skateboarding has a problem with educated people.
Some will call you genius because you went to school after HS or call you pretentious if you use 3 syllable words. how lost can you be ?
it certainly has something to do with this:
Isn’t this question an oxymoron as the intelligent choice is to not be a pro skateboarder
and a bit of inferiority complex
-
The way Shane O'Neill handled his career seems very smart. Made the right moves every step of the way without falling into any of the vices associated with the pro lifestyle.
-
I kinda feel bad for Suciu getting flack because almost every time he talks about anything academic, it's because an interviewer asked him a very stupid question about it.
-
Dr. Darren Menditto
His IG is drmoose1. He is an ER doctor and a vert pro with a board on toxic.

Seems to me the Muska is pretty intelligent. We talked for about an hour. He refused to go bombing with us. Cuz all us kids just wanted to go bombing with him rather than skate!! Lololol. I'm dying rn.
Also He was right. I should have repeat escaped to LA before I violated probation again. Lol.
Always listen to the Muska kids.

This is kinda how I feel. There's no way that someone who's worked that much with the berries isn't full of regrets too. I feel like Shane's more case of luck. Look at little Will.. In my opinion he blows doors on Shane but he's all but invisible.
He didn't get all twisted up in the berries. He ignore them s**** even though he's coming from a gos background unlike like Shane. He's completely the route of gos
The berries hurt everyone except for tpud.

Yeah, I'm not sure about this one. Didn't he nearly get sued by Nike for breach of contract to DC, but stayed on? Then he got the opportunity for a pro Nike shoe and just opted to slap his name on a worse version of the Janoski. Then left Primitive to start a board company with the Girl Scouts of America logo. He's said no to drugs, but he's certainly made a few missteps.
-
The way Jerry Hsu articulates himself is quite eloquent; it gives me the impression that is he may have a relatively high IQ
-
Nik Stain is news to me, is there anything out there about it? Like an article or a thesis?
Didn't know Alexis's degree is from MIT either, pretty rad. I always smile about how much GH loves her.
With Suciu it feels like I'd really like to read something he's written and is convinced about enough to put out there. I remember vaguely that a "leaked" text of his circulated on here a while ago. If that was genuine, it's worse than Kyle Beachy.

I disagree with this. What a fun way to travel the world in your early 20s. A truly rational person would realize that is a once in a lifetime opportunity. But you have to have an early exit and a back up plan…

I thought he was an orthopedic specialist a while back but his CV says DO.
A guy at FDR dislocated his arm once and Menditto… we’ll say, offered good advice.
A few years ago he was still skating Cab 6s or 7s which I thought was cool - he said he still had a closet full from when he was getting flow.

Jack Sabback went to Temple before it was cool.
Ocean Howell wrote a book and has been a professor.

I'm not familiar with a lot of the new skaters but I'd say a lot of the 80s guys like Gonz, Lucero, Lance, etc., seem intelligent to me. People that are creating new things or doing their own thing are usually more intelligent than the average person.
I don't think degrees are indicative of IQ at all anymore. Aside from STEM or accounting degrees, I think getting an undergrad degree today only shows that you wasted your time and money (taxpayer money too?) and that you can probably read and write on a 10th grade level. Higher education is supposed to teach you how to think efficiently and critically, not what to think. There is certainly no shortage of dummies graduating from college nowadays. Largely because the professors are dummies, college has become a money-making racket, and the primary/secondary education in the USA has turned into shit.

Bobby Puleo seems very intelligent. Talking to him about skatebloarding and skate adjacent topics it's like talking to my dad about the civil war.
My father was the authority on that shit. Dropped out of school in the 5th grade but was doing lectures at colleges around the time he was in Gettysburg or Glory or whatever movie. Public interest had peaked in civil war stuff.
I hated that shit. To me it did not matter what colour uniform you had. All was racist bastards. And in the reenactment circles it was the northern guys from around the Chesapeake who was the most racist. I never fucked with camp at those things.
Fuckin drop the bomb right here on this field slightly to the left of the actual Antietam. I'll take cover with my brother at the sunken road while we erase all these bastards from the planet.
Kill racist today. No one will miss um

Yea he’s the type of guy that used all of his brain data capacity on funny unnecessary stuff and the drinking doesn’t help him at all but I also wouldn’t say he’s stupid.
There is a certain IQ necessary to make jokes like he does.
