If you had access to fat stacks of decks in the warehouse, what top color stain would you pick?
-
Anything but blue or red.
Green is always tight, but preferably pink.
-
i put griptape over it and skate it. never understood why it mattered.
-
I'm colorblind
-
I enjoy a good purple.
-
Illegitimate poll. You forgot Fred Gall.
-
I get the taboo or whatever but i fuck with a red ply
-
Orange has magical properties. By far, no 1.
Then,
Green, yellow, blue, pink, purple, brown, natural, red. No Dip ever.
-
If the shop has two of the same board I'll pick a bright top ply over a dark one. Prob don't really need coloured top plus at all. Def don't need top graphics.
-
I like the ones from Palace. Very random shit.
-
I chose blue but really what I want is teal
-
Green, Teal, Blue, Yellow, Orange and Purple

When the grip tape wears away at the edges, and the color shows through there.
-

Fred Gall transcends the visible spectrum of color. Therefore he cannot be a choice, and no deck could withstand the frequency at which his particles vibrate.
-
@logjammin @fs1/2cab @Pastasash
Teal added.
-
Purple or pink is my preference, not always what I get though…
-
Blue or pink. Purples.
I skated a couple of Prime boards recently, they had a really nice deep blue stain.
-
Whatever Limo does with their dyed middle veneers looks great.
-
Hands down the worst is natural for top and bottom ply.
-
Pros
- Teal, green
- brown, black, orange, red
- pink, purple
Cons
- Blue
- yellow
- dipped whatever
-

Natty tops are sick, ask Ross Norman
-
Nice topic,
Teal makes me feel happy, but i love a nice Green or Dark Purple, both great.
Anything but Yellow or Red, no superstition but they just bum me out
-
purple/black/red stains (superstitious plebs, go pray into your hats/tap your board 3x while you're at it)
Secondary: Pink/Orange/Blue (I've lost interest in yellow and teal and not a fan of green)
I always ask for a preferred color with online ordering. Most are able to do it if they have it (Cowtown is especially accomodating as they will check each store/ship from there if they have it).
I feel teal is probably the average color provided when not specified.
-
Pink is the best stain in any situation
in general, life needs more multi stains
-
Pink or teal are my favorite and if I get those I always leave a line down the left side so I can see the ply. Red is my least favorite
-
I will not tolerate yellow top slander. You got that black and yellow combo and feel the Wu power. Unless for some reason you don't use black grip then I won't say anything.

A NICE yellow, fine, Polar mustarsbabyshityellow can fuckoff.
-
I retract blue and vote teal now, but I don't think you can.
Yellow top plies only suck because they fuck with my OCD and show even the slightest imperfections from slicing/sanding. And as the board gets abused it looks sloppier vs having a darker colored ply like blues/teals/purple/black/brown. Kinda the same with orange top, too. But it's not as bad as the yellow. Pink used to threaten my manhood now I don't mind it at all. A rich vibrant pink, that is. Not a fluffy light shade.

Yellow tops do make the board look trash af really fast.
Yeah, has to be that deep saturated almost hot pink, not the pale shit Quasi uses.
-
Always ask for anything other than yellow. Had to settle for yellow, because it was the last one and it's been bumming me out.
Blue, teal, green, purple and orange are the best, red is a bit questionable, natty wood poor, but dark brown ok, black was surprisingly good on my last board. Dipped boards nah.
-
damn this yellow top hate is wild to me. dlx yellow tops are my favorite.
-
Honestly anything that isn’t natural is fine with me. I love red tops I never understood why people consider them bad luck.
If I had one wish it would be that baker would make sure their bottom plys were stained. Last two baker boards I had were over 70 bucks and when I got some slides in and saw natural bottom ply it kinda broke my heart
-
Yellow is the best, I even like natty tops, definitely not skating a full dip ever, and this is purely aesthetic choices, being superstitious over top ply colors is kinda fried
-
Natural and yellow are gross enough to make me not wanna buy Bakers decks.
-
why do ppl not like full dip? never had one but would try one out
-
Orange top makes you skate better
-

Full dip is like a scratch off: you never know what color you’re going to win.
Super fun. And even better if you win your favorite color.
-
Yeah, I’m hopping on the yellow top hate band wagon.
Yellow would have been great as a bottom ply, because then slide marks would glow up on full graphics.
Been unlucky enough to wind up with two yelllow tops in a row.
Is it weird that I like it when the stuff that goes on my board is colour coordinated?
Like this:
Also had the yellow Indy bushings in there.

Every full dip I’ve had has been natty underneath never color, I’d be kinda hyped on colors underneath a full dip

Never had a bad orange deck. Completely agree.
-
I voted Pink so I could see the poll
I reckon dsm and ps have the nicest looking stains
After skating mini logo decks I think stopped caring as much
There are many replies in this thread that made me nod my head in agreement
Red stains are cool, I dont need other people's superstitions I have plenty of my own

Saluted, sir.

I've been matchy matchy on purpose a few times, it can be fun and make that board 'special' like doing a grip job; it's personalized.
-
it does not matter for me, i prefer variety.
no dipped boards, not never, and no egg roll
-
Quasi was running a black stain for their top plies that was quite nice. It’s been a few years since I skated Quasi tho, not sure if they still do that.
-
I like the contrast of a yellow top ply. A yellow bottom ply under a darker graphic is also ideal. I don’t really like brown or natural top plies/bottom plies.
The only dipped boards I like are black.
-
Yellow is definitely my first pick. Pink is nice though and purple. Pastel/brighter colors are best generally.
-
Anything that’s not red or natural does but prefer green or purple

The white dipped cathedral series from Real has normal color stains underneath (two top, one bottom)

All of this!
-
Kinda surprised pink is top dog
I would have thought more on the blue/teal/green side would be more popular
Edit: obviously i didn't look that close cause blue and green were in the top 5
-
Teal and Orange are god tier tops that always look sharp.
If it’s green, gotta be lime flavor. Brighter the better.
Natural decks are gross to look at. I’ve never enjoyed a single one.
-
.
Things have changed over the years.
Once it was orange or yellow as that was what all the best boards had at the time - DLX 8.18 mainly back in the mid 00s, for whatever reason, but now I am really liking teal, just because it is an in between colour, but also it seems that the teal tops on DLX boards often were more mellow than others.
Pure speculation, but it seemed to be the case with a number of boards I have had, so any teal tops, I always squirrel away and the ones I have skated always seem just right for me.
Funny how that goes though.
* Happy to see teal added, so that gets my vote, even if I am a little late to this party.
-
I voted blue but I meant teal. Orange is a nice surprise

i had a pop board, black dip, black bottom and top ply, it looked kinda sick ngl

Orange or green pop really nicely when used on occasion

I’m not usually a fan of yellow veneers, but this one is an exception with that top graphic. Black Label Jason Adams curb shark, 9” x 14.5” wb.
-
Brown or natty has to be my favorite, honorable mention goes to blue and oragne
-
Such a big disparity between pink and red, for what is essentially the same colour.
Same with coloured wheels. Pink pretty cool, red is star wars Kmart complete.

It is allowed.
