Title: Mini ramp appreciation!
Post by: heckler on August 06, 2007, 08:58:11 AM
Best things to skate, in my opinion. It sucks that the closest skateable one is about 30 minutes away from my house, but that makes you appreciate a good session much more. Post pics of mini ramps and good footage.

No footy but the one in the back of the pic is the one I skate at least once a week.

I have a micro one at my house under my carport, I skate it daily.
We have 2 or 3 good ones within a few miles.
Personally I'd rather skate a mini than get kicked out of spots all day.

mini's are fun but I actually prefer skating quarters. more cruising time and you can mix in some flat land or someshit

but when I do skate mini, it's usually this one at EZ7 that Guy's skating

or the new southside mini that Tim Oconner had some recent footage on that I couldn't find

Mini ramps are what I prefer to skate.
I drove an hour and 20mins yesterday to skate one.

Heres some footage of my friends ramp thats in his garage. (nothing extravagant in the videos, just tiredness)

we usually skate this mini ramp with a few of the older guys (us being around 19 years old and the older ones about 28), which makes an interesting mix of tricks. pivot fakies next to lay back 5-0s and such.

i like them because they are like the rails of tranny. if it wasn't for them, i'd probably never rack. plus grinds and slides feel better on spines for some reason

mini ramps are great, esp. ones with character. too bad you can't go fast down the street, leaping over shit, go from spot to spot and pop tricks down the gaps on them though.

ah, i skated the nicest ramp i've ridden a few days ago, the thing was so much fun. 4 feet high, maybe 18 across, 30 long, with 5 feet of 6 ft extensions. Stairs off the side, manual pad off the side.. so sick.

It's def. worth the half hour drive.

i've been wanting to try tricks off the spin at ez7 for a while but haven't tried it yet. i've messed around with the same idea on some of the quarters up there and it's fun but the spines i bit gnarlier. seems like it would be a tight way to skate a spine though, finish a line with a backlip to flat or frontboard to flat or someshit

if your ever in Houston, Southsides new one is sick. It's got an 8 foot wide extension that's probably 5' high and the rest is 4' and I'd say at least 20' wide. you can start high and lock in the longest grinds. I can't even take a five 0 all the way, it's just too long. And the coping is really fat and super fast. I'll try and find a clip of it.

This is the mini in JoshewUhs second photo (with both of us and a bunch more cats):

Edited to add: diabolik is usually at these sessions when we all get together...

This has a lot of mini footage from a park that's just across the bridge from New Orleans (sick fucking ramp):

Me at my friend's micro mini here in Hammond, looking like shit because of the pumping required to move:

Some of us use two parts of our concrete bowl as a mini when we're not carving around... we have an indoor bowl that pretty much has a 5 and 8 foot mini in it.

Oh yeah, and though I despise ARC ramps like nobody else in the world, I have to give the spine at EZ-7 (as well as the six footer behind it) that Sleazy posted some props. That fucker is fun.

Another ARC setup (that I feel guilty for liking) is this:
The mini alone is pretty lame, but the hips on both sides are a blast. The transitions are mellow, so you can fucking jump up as high as you want frontside or backside when transferring, and you don't really have to worry about hanging up or having to be leaning too much upon entry into the transition. One other thing is that the surface is grippy, so you can land kind of fucked up and not have to worry about slipping out (though reverts are pretty hard to do, which kind of sucks for me because I like reverting every which way I can).

Kids seem to avoid mini ramps (for the most part) at most parks I visit. I usually see them skating boxes or rails... they also claim to "not skate vert" in reference to four foot trannies.

Off topic: I colored Wayne Patricks's Aminal graphics (Champagne bottle), drawn by Wil Taylor. Small world.

This park in cosprings has a 7 foot tranny that kids call 'vert' all the time. Apparently I can skate vert and didn't know it.

Taylor then proceeded to tail drop from the banister into the mini.

He must have been talking about one of the older ramps because he went to prision before the new one I was talking about was done. But damn, every mini is probably childs play from Will's prespective, guy kills tranny. Also, there's a 3' there that is definitely about as small as they get, maybe he was talking about that one.

Will's skating was sick, it's a shame he's not around anymore.

Hey, was that at Sun City? I fucking loved that place, man. Me and Kerry and another dude drove to Houston for the weekend, where we hit Vans and Southside... but we wound up going to Sun City twice because we enjoyed it so much. Birch is the best surface ever. I heard that place got burned down.

It was relatively close to me when I lived there and the day I finally went to skate it i found out it got torched.

sun city was rad but it the todd falcon session for me were mostly at the first dex out in stafford back in 2000.

but yeah, it burnt down under suspicious circumstances and the ramps got sold to random people. Derek Simon, the guy in my avatar, actually got some of the ramps for his little TF that runs along the side of his house in neederland, TX.

Mini ramps are fun for ridculous footplant variations. Right now I'm trying one I call Moscow on the Rio Grande. It's a Texas Plant russian boneless. I'll never pull it, but at least the attempts make people laugh.

they also claim to "not skate vert" in reference to four foot trannies.

Hearing a kid say that always makes me laugh.

seeing a nineteen yearold dude attempt to hit our jersey barrier then proceed to tell us that he doesn't skate vert is the best

fuck that thing looks sick and seeing how Nick's so high, i'd assume it's built good. some backyard ramps are so slow.

might be in Austin for Devendra, are the sessions pretty easy to get in on there? or is it more of a locals only vibe?

A little of both from my experience.

it is not too easy to get a session there if you do not know Turtle. I can go when I want since I built it. Sleazy- you can PM me on the duos forum. I will give you my contact info if you find yourself in Austin. I am pretty good at showing people around.

Back to mini ramp appreesh. Here are some links to some backyard ramp series contest that some friends threw earlier in the summer.

Yeah! Mini ramps are the best. So fun to skate and session with your friends. I think my favorite trick is frontside tailslides or blunt to fakie
