i always skate stairs and stuff but never really skate rails at all. The only trick ive done on a handrail is boardslide, so today after skating this skatepark with friends i went to try and 5050 this rail right near my house. even for just a 5050 i was terrified. i tried it a bunch of times, i was getting the ollies onto it but i never landed it. its weird cause a park i go to used to have this pyrmid rail that was pretty legit height and i would skate that thing for hours withou problems. .whatever . i tried
-
This one really long gap by my house, not that tall but super long and i was scared as shit. I ollied it then wanted to film it so i tried it again and clipped and ate shit. Then did it next try.
-
the scariest thing ever is when you fall off your board and you're in mid-air and you think to yourself "this is gonna fucking hurt and there's nothing i can do about it"
-
Skating downhill with 4 other dudes on a long backroad in Athens, GA which resulted in all of us screaming at this near death experience. I'm glad nobody wobbled out of control since we were in a somewhat tight formation. I've never gone faster. Ever.
-
Always from cars
-
I usually get scared skating some gnarly bowls around where I live.
-
trying to fs boardslide a hand rail after i fell on my back real hard trying it the day before on a different rail
-
i seldomely go into cradles and when i do, i usually don't have any problem getting upside down
anyways there this cradle at the park down the street from my house and i dropped int the bowl went towards the cradle, i have no idea what happened but i got up there and fell straght down on my side, back
it was horrible
-
Oh and anything that ends up threatening my teeth.
-
went to ollie over this gap down the street from my house onto the sidewalk, stuck as soon as my wheels hit, flew forwards straight into traffic. my buddy jumped in the road to stop this car that was ten feet from running my head over. i just walked home after that
-
*anything involving moving cars
*grinding this handrail that kept breaking and had rusty jagged nails hanging out of it
*sneaking into this secret spot (the brent atchley skateboarder cover), and having to hide from the levee cops under the rubble. also, the spot was crumbling into the river, and if you fall into the water you could drown pretty easily
*anytime skating in public since I got sick. i feel like I have a ticking timebomb in my stomach that can go off at any minute.
-
It seems like every trick i did all last winter, i was shit scared prior to doing it. Glad im over that.
-
When I was 16 I tried my first handrail. It was this 5 block thing and kind of steep, about 8 or 9 normal steps. I rolled up to it for about an hour before I got the balls to jump onto it. After that I went there a few days later and did it first try with no fear at all.
Also learning kickflip backlips on a flat bar was pretty scary.
-
Flailing a 540 attempt on vert. Wasn't even close but was commended for doing the upside down style of 540 and not just spinning. I learned a couple of airs and got all cocky I guess. Shit was hilarious.

damn, i wish i could've seen that. and NOT saying that in a dick way. sanch trying 540s. who knew?
-
learning to roll-in on transition. to this day, my vision blurs real quickly before i roll in to anything bigger than 5 feet.
-
anytime you fuck up, and you think youll just not land the trick, then look down and see youre about to land on your board by accident... its always too late by that point and it fucking hurts slipping out that hard
-
That split second of upside down free fall after hanging up on a 12ft concrete wall padless.

rolling in really does scare the fuck out me as well. especially when the coping juts out excessively. shit is frigtening, but there's no better feeling than making it to the next wall after you've taken the plunge.
-
when i tried to ollie off this 13 foot high roof. broke my toe :'(
-
generally the only time i get scared skating is if some sort of steep hill is around.
-
I was on a family trip to California around '93 (I was 16 or so), skating up and down the streets around Disneyland. At one point I was waiting for the light to change to cross a street.
Three dudes come up to me and one guy says "gimme your board". I say no.
"I'm not kidding. Gimme your board or I'll jack you. I'm from LA. I've got a knife. I'll stab you right here" (first time I ever heard "jack").
I look around, notice that I'm all alone. I was across the street from the hotel strip, with nothing really on my side... vacant lot, strawberry fields, or walled-off disneyland or something. No people to help, anyway.
I just say no again, thinking that I couldn't buy another board. My board was a beat up piece - chipped Willy Santos "Kris Kross" model with lame fluorescent yellow (was in the bargain bin at the shop), flatspotted wheels, etc. But it was all I had and didn't want to lose it to some dick. Make no mistake - there was no "fuck you" or toughness of any kind in my "no"... More like a pleading "c'mon, please, man". I'm sure the fear was written all over my face.
I'm considering that I may be a huge idiot for resisting when he breaks into a grin and says he's just kidding. Claims to be an ex-skater who had once met and skated with Lance Mountain. I'm hugely relieved, but am fully aware that had I handed over my board, he would have kept it. He was only "kidding" when it came to following through with a knife.
The light changes. One of the other dudes asks if I have a dollar. I'm trying to be cool: "sure, dude." I give him a dollar.
I try to keep skating but my knees are shaking from the adrenaline dump.
I go back to the hotel and say nothing to my parents.

A few years ago I was filming a line that ended with kickflip a skinny 13, I was pretty much hoping that I wouldnt land the first tricks. Ended up doing it because my friend offered me a board for it. That and when I was skitching my friends car and got my arm and almost my head run over.
-
i was bombing a steep ass hill and theres a turn you gotta make before going straight down into a wall. i started making the turn (backside) and just didnt have it. i jumped off got a couple steps in and slammed into the side of a house. couldnt skate for a couple days because i messed my back up but it couldve been worse
-
skating home wasted bombing a hill, ollieing train tracks and fucking up
knowing there was no way i could run this fast, face grinding curb, but I'll have to say I would have been way more scared if I wasn't completely hammered
as far as actual tricks, handrails are scary, big bowls, vert, the problem is sometimes you don't know how scary some shit is until you actually try it
-
i ollied into this huge bank-thing that goes into traffic, i had my friend checkfor cars and my other homey was filming it, a bus came out of nowhere going waaay too fast, i shot across the street, i think it was 4 lanes, and i missed it by a few feet. it was seriously all instinct, i am so lucky, i would of died for sure. looking back on it now i don't think i would even try to drop in on something like that, it was rediculously sketchy.
-
everytime i skitch i thinik im just gonna end up sliding on my stomach due to another time i actually did that........oh and don ross secondarys 9 stair ... ;)
-
the first time i dropped in on vert...
-
i was skating a ledge next to a mellow bank and waxed the top of the ledge by accident.... i missed a bs 50-50 and fell flat on my chest which winded me... tried it again and i put my right arm to break my fall and my arm twisted outwards at the elbow... almost dislocated it and had to wear a brace on my arm for 2 months....
-
-hill bombs
-coping in the deep end

trying that ledge when I was young and stupid.
-
That split second of upside down free fall after hanging up on a 12ft concrete wall padless.
i had never even skated a skatepark bowl before i skated my first pool(it was the one that zered frontside pivot fakies in the dvs video)
i went up the wall and somehow got pitched 12 feet down to flat completely missing the transition. i had a broken wrist for months after that

i remember that. i still feel partly to blame for it.... sorrryyy
-
my worst moment was when my friend was trying a 16 set with a big crack about a wheel wide at the bottom, a foot away from the last step
i freaked the shit out, and there was a huuge crowd around, like 100 people or something curious as to what was happening (it was on a fucking busy street). 4 tries later (! this impressed me to no end), cops showed up and we had to scramble. even more adrenaline. i hid under a bench. they found me. i ran.

First kickflip attempt after torn ligaments.
Thinking some dude with a gun was following me and my friend.
-
Walking around Liverpool with a skateboard can be the scariest. "Ey you skater goth" that has been said to me countless amount of times. I remember once someone through a traffic cone and a brick at my friend cause we were skateboarding.
-
Bombing hills. The first time I ever tried to bomb one I died and had 3rd degree road burns on my hand and 9 stitches on my chin.
Now every time we skate them there is ALWAYS a car backing out of a house, turning into the street etc. That always gets my adrenaline pumping and my heart beating fast.
-
everytime ive tried to do a legit rock to fakie.. stilll cant do them
-
when i was filming a line at a 12 then a 15...a bunch of my friends were like, "its a perfect day to do that line"....and i was like yeah sure, if you say so...and they drove me there and i did the line but i also shit my pants

i don't skate handrails because they're scary as fuck.<br>oh and its pretty scary when you have cops chasing you.
-
One time I landed in wet cement (we were walking around in it and it looked and felt completely dry) at a very busy shopping center, and the owner kept screaming that I would go to jail and shit. I was young and not used to street skating. Should've ran.
Running from the police is always pretty scary.
When I was 10 I dropped in on a vert quarterpipe and fell down and got winded pretty badly. Skatepark locals made me do it again. It felt like I was free falling to my death, but it felt so good riding away.
My first time really getting outside the skatepark, also when I was 10, one of the older kids took me to a loading dock. This thing was taller than me, and an older kid I was with made me try it. I actually think this might have been my first time actually street skating. Got that third try. Rolling away was probably one of the best feelings I've ever had. That night really changed my life.
-
being 9 and learning rock fakies
-
Dropping in for the first time : )
But really, dropping in on some 12 foot steep quarter pipe designed for BMXers a la X-games with coping sticking way out. You placed your board and your wheels were just hanging in the air. I fucking hate quarter pipes like that.
Oh, when you bomb hills and reache the speed of no return. Any attempt to put a foot down of slow down will result in injury.
-
Tie between dropping in on vert (still get scared) or one time I was bombing a hill in SF, it was sort of mellow but long so I was pushing to get some extra speed, my foot hit one of those reflectors that stick out of the road causing me to almost lose my balance, I am going down the hill rather fast from pushing trying to keep my balance with my front foot with my back foot trying to get back on the board, somehow I regained my balance and didn't fall but had to stop for about 5 mins to calm down from being so scared.

That split second of upside down free fall after hanging up on a 12ft concrete wall padless.
For me, it wasn't 12 feet or concrete, but earlier this year I was faded and dropped in on top of the deathbox at our indoor bowl (about 8 or 9 feet or soemthing like that). We had been skating the over the deathbox the whole night, but some of us had stepped out, got a little blunted, and came back in for more skating... I immediately walked to the deep end, set my board up right over the box, and tried to drop in... of note, I was dropping in compressed so I could really haul ass off the wall... the most speed inducing drop-in I could muster... as soon as I made the tip over, the whole back half of my board got shuved into the death box and I was jumping straight down, sideways but more head-first. the thud I took at the bottom kept me off my board for a while off and on, but it was the fucking moment of helpless free fall... my mind knew I was fucked, but my body was still locked into "drop in" mode... I never even stuck out a hand to block myself. *thud*

its ok dude, no hard feelings at all....
another scary incident was when my friends and i were bombing a hill next to my house... it takes like 3 minutes to reach the bottom of the hill, the road is asphalt with lots of speed bumps.... that was probably the first time i prayed while skating.....

Was skating the 6ft spine in IA city in the middle of winter. We shoveled out the snow, and let it dry for a day. Came back and skated it when it was like 20 degrees out. First run I dropped in, bailed off the top of the spine and stepped on my board halfway down the transition--it was the moment I saw my foot going right for the board. I broke my arm and cracked a rib--I had the wind knocked out of me so I couldn't talk to my friends. I just picked up my board and limped to the car and drove home. My wife came home a while later and took me to the ER.
-
I was driving a car with my 2 of my friends skitching, I heard a and felt a bump. I stop and look back and his shoe was missing and he was just sitting there trying to figure out what had happened.
He had tried to grab on when I first started driving and missed. He then tried to push to catch up and got his push leg caught under the tire.
-
There's this downhill sidewalk bump spot, right around the corner from my apartment. I've always been intimidated by it, for months I never touched it but last night after a couple beers I just said fuck it and went for the ollie. Bailed, slammed, pulled it and powerslid into the street. I'm going back for the 180 and the half-Cab as soon as it stops raining. It's all a head trip.

trying to skate this big 4 at gordo at night drunk in the rain hyped i didn't get hurt

ONE TIME I TRIED TO MAKE A FREE POST, OH WAIT, THAT'S GUINNESS

bombing the biggest hill i've ever bombed and right before i was about to hit the flat, i see a car just stop and idle right at the flat bottom. there was no way i could swere around it so i tried to run it out and fell and slid on my chest right in front of the dude's front left tire with my head under his car.

Speed wobbles
-
i had on incident a few years ago that pretty much shook me for good. i was trying to jump down some steps and i had to go way to fast at the steps,,, making even an" in control bail" even harder because of the speed you had to travel at. anyways, i caught my board on one and went for it,, my nose clipped the last stair, i slid out backwards and the right side of my face and the upper part of my neck and ear just barley tapped the end stair when i was falling backward, on film it really didnt look all that bad but the feeling seriously made my heart skip a beat, if i would have landed a little closer my face would of been in 2 pieces. im been pretty shook up about trying big shit and more laxed and into skating smaller stuff now.

One night there was a power outage that stretched for blocks, including the skatepark(no lights so we left), and my friends and I went to bomb a hill down the street. It's probably 2 blocks long and pretty smooth, but half way down people started running extension cords across the street to get power. I didn't even notice them until I was about 5 feet away, that's probably the scarriest cuz I knew I was about to eat shit. Either that or the time I smacked my head and started bleeding, and my friend told me he could see my brain. But technically I got scared after I already fell.

did you jump off before you hit the extension cords or hit them?

I sort of jumped off as I hit them and got like 2 steps in then hit the ground. I would have gladly ollied over it but there was no time. I didn't see it until it was seriously right in front of me; I just wasnt expecting it, it was one of those moments where you're helpless.

Speed wobbles while bombing hills more than anything else. I had a bad fall that could have really fucked my brain up if I wasn't lucky, and that's tough to get out of your head (no pun intended.)
Anytime i'm coming back from an injury is scary too.
